[Quote] It was a bloody night on Tuesday October 2nd, 2007 as an unspecified number of people were roasted to death after a petrol tanker ascending the overhead bridge on Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere, opposite the National Stadium, fell, exploded and caught fire. The petrol spilled by the tanker spread on the road and the fire it sparked off burnt other vehicles trapped in the rush hour traffic. Many of the victims who were roasted to death were commuters in buses and other motorists trapped in the vehicles that were close to the burning tanker.

Though the number of those burnt to death could not be ascertained at press time, at least 10 bodies were on the ground while about nine vehicles were also burnt.

One hour after the incident occurred, neither the police nor men of the fire service came to the scene even though their offices are located about 200 metres away.

When journalists accosted the DPO of the Police Station, he was enraged asking what he was expected to do. Also, at the Federal Fire Service close to the police station, the officers on night duty were seen sitting idly in front of the office, and obviously not showing any concern about the carnage very close to them.

When they were challenged, one of them explained that they did not have any truck, let alone water to combat the inferno. He said when the police barracks which was beside them was burning as a result of the soldiers’ attack sometime ago, they could not do anything, let alone move 200 metres away to combat the tanker inferno. This is just an example of cases of ineptitude in government parastatals. This is a country that God has blessed with everthing needed to make life comfortable for the citizens. Go to government schools, hospitals, Police, Civil Service, Military, Fireservice, et al, the story is the same. Who do we really blame for this? Government or the workers?
