dappssee:

If there is a strike today the people that will suffer the most are the same people NLC is seemingly fighting for - the market women, artisans etc

The transportation industry will lso suffer but it wont affect the oil and gas industries that much because you can't shut down an oil well. It will cost millions of dollars to restart it so Nigeria will continue to produce and sell oil. It will however have a positive effect on the exchange rate as we will be exporting (oil forms the biggest part of our exports) and not importing (as the sea and airports will not function)

True talk, subsitute 9ja for Yankee in this sobering article concerning lack of transport. And let me add one of my own.

Because of lack of jet fuel at the airports, Treasury Looters and their connected accomplices will not be able to fly to Dubai to enjoy their other lifestyle.

When Trucks Stop America(Nigeria) Stops

The first 24 hours
• Delivery of medical supplies to the affected area will cease.
• Hospitals will run out of basic supplies such as syringes and catheters
within hours. Radiopharmaceuticals will deteriorate and become
unusable.
• Service stations will begin to run out of fuel.
• Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will develop component
shortages.
• U.S. mail and other package delivery will cease.

Within one day
• Food shortages will begin to develop.
• Automobile fuel availability and delivery will dwindle, leading to skyrocketing
prices and long lines at the gas pumps.
• Without manufacturing components and trucks for product delivery,
assembly lines will shut down, putting thousands out of work.

Within two to three days
• Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of hoarding and
consumer panic.
• Supplies of essentials—such as bottled water, powdered milk, and
canned meat—at major retailers will disappear.
• ATMs will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process
transactions.
• Service stations will completely run out of fuel for autos and trucks.
• Garbage will start piling up in urban and suburban areas.
• Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted,
eventually coming to a standstill.

Within a week
• Automobile travel will cease due to the lack of fuel. Without autos and
busses, many people will not be able to get to work, shop for groceries,
or access medical care.
• Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies.

Within two weeks
• The nation’s clean water supply will begin to run dry.

Within four weeks
• The nation will exhaust its clean water supply and water will be safe for
drinking only after boiling. As a result gastrointestinal illnesses will
increase, further taxing an already weakened health care system.

GEJ didn't wait for the senate and house of reps before he removed subsidy but u want us to follow due process before protests is carried out?

A govt that is not interested in addressing the cost of governance that is crippling this country has no moral right to remove the subsidy that directly impacts in the lives of the poor masses.
No amount of power point slides by Sanusi and Iweala can win the argument.
If there is a cabal feeding fat on the subsidy, go after them.
you spend millions and billions buying food in the presidency and stationery in Sambo's office and you try to justify increasing fuel price by over 100 percent? It is immoral and no amount of petro-economic lecture can justify it.
As long as the masses see a 'come and chop' govt in action, the subsidy debate would always be lost by the govt.
If they claim that fuel subsidy is what will crash the economy, let it be. the salaries of all the SSA, SA and PAs in Aso rock and the clowns in NASS will not crash the economy, abi?
these liars have no conscience, #stolen Comment#

@OmoTier: Well done, I posted same in some other thread.

What do you make of a Presidency that budgets N1.2bn for Feeding?, When newspapers are going electronic, and with all their ipads, Samsung galaxy,  why on earth is the Presidency spending millions on newspaper when the average Nigerian can not feed three times daily

Last year, a Near Gulf Stream 5 worth N7.5bn was bought for the exclusive use of the wife of the President!, GEJ can show He means well for Nigerians by selling of that jet and using the money to construct 3 World class Hospital in Nigeria!

Ok agreed oil subsidy is the best of plot (assuming we've all accepted having non-functioning refineries are a given).

But those reasons above are exactly why I would NEVER EVER trust this government,  a slowpoke that spends 3-4million Naira on feeding per day! How much we dey spend for take arrange feeding for society wedding? How wan family go take 3-4million naira chop per day.

Most couples (both uni or poly graduates) don't even earn that in 2 years!!! haba!

Trust ko trust ni, not even with 1.3 trillion kobo, barawo, better to give the money to the cartels at least we will still buy fuel for 65 and those of us wey get friends and families among them can benefit from them, how we wan benefit for money wey Jona and co wan pake for dem pocket?

Even self if we be maga( as we be), try wet ground now before we drop. Do something solid, constructive to earn that trust.

Dem no dey buy fuel o, they can't sacrifice from the insane wealth they've got, but they want us to sacrifice from N18,000/month

@Beaf, telling someone in the uk 2start a protest cos 60% of their tax is in d pump price is not in anyway thesame 2wat we r currently xperiencing. The uk have got d following dat helps cushion d effect of a high pump price: 1:they have consistent power,(meaning small biz can grow,no overwhelming dependency on pms etc). 2:they av got good roads, social and health facilities. 3:the local refineries r working. 4:they av a better security system than ours. I cld go on and on,if Naija had all dis in place, trust Nigerians,we might give GEJ benefit of a doubt.

The lower and middle class will be affected. The upper class will take a stroll to Dubai, London etc. The politicians will not even feel the heat. All their allowances will be paid and in fact, they will even be paid more to compensate for the "inconvenience" of the strike action. The biggest losers will be private business owners who cannot operate.

The NLC protest will surely hurt the poor masses more than it will hurt the government. As usual market women, artisans, traders, private business owners will be the first to feel the pinch. Compare to poor masses who can bare stockpile enough food to last 2 days, Government has enough money and food to last them 6 months!

NLC protest will only increase the inflationary pressure. It is ill conceived. NLC does not represent the people at this time. It is too early in the year to carry out any sustained strike.

Do you know that the price of goods and services in Nigeria has increased by an average of over 110%?

Biscuit from N5 to N15
Pure water N5 to N10 and some part N15
. . . Etc . . .

So what inflation are you talking about? The one that has already occurred (artificially created) or the one that will still occur?

by the way long before the subsidy removal pure water sells for 10 naira in SE and nobody has made an issue out of it!

Ironically . . . Those areas might start buying pure water at N20 - 25 naira currently . . . the inflation is usually evident everywhere .  . .there is no selective balancing of prizing in any of the  geopolitical zones . . .

But to say the truth . .i don't see the masses obeying this for long . . .this would heap more pain on them than imagined . .

All those labour union men wey get enough food for house wan punish us  angry . .make we dey protest dey go . . . at least . .there is flexibility of movements to earn some money .

In any case pure water is more or less a luxury item and is in no way an essential commodity. Many will resist paying a fortune for it.

that said I agree with you that sooner or later the masses are bound to tire. Poor People have to go out in other to survive, i don't see labour keeping them at home for too long! Watch out for the grocery stores and markets. Labour has messed up big time.

Pure water is sold for 10 naira only in Imo state cos it was banned by ohakim, but still 5 naira in other eastern states. SS zone sells for 10 naira cos things are generally expensive there, subsidy or no subsidy. So you need to get your facts right. Also your argument is wack. Pls go to bed.
Re: Nlc To Shut Down Airports, Banks, Etc - Advises Masses To Stockpile. Who Loses? by Excellent7(m): 1:51am On Jan 06, 2012
The NLC guys are something else.
There are a lot of other things that need serious protest, that the NLC should protest about, like the way cost of governance is eating up a bigger chunk of revenue. If we are serious about moving forward, the 1st thing might be to compel all political office holders to take at least an "80%" pay cut, and direct the savings to infrastructure and masses oriented projects. Labour should campaign that the take home pay of all political office holders should be denominated in multiples of the existent minimum wage with nobody "taking home no more than 20 times the minimum wage. The money this guys are scooping from the national wealth is spupendouis multiples of that of their mates in the advanced economies yet we are third world!!!
Secondly, labour should rather ensure the get the government deploys whatever the claim to save to people oriented and infrastructural projects in transportation, education and health, and not just share the money among the 3 tiers and then siphon it with appointme nt of more special advisers and akllowances.

I tire for ma country people oh! When NLC did nt strike on time they rained abuses on them, now that they are ready to do so still issues arises. It's obvious that most peeps that might not want the strike could afford to buy fuel even @ 500 naira per litre. The strike will effect everyone even Jonathan cuz dat means no more luxurious spending. If u want progress then u must fight for it. Do u think other countries were where they are today because the masses folded their hands and accept everything that the government doled out? Will u wait till u have no roof over ur heads and no food to eat before u stand for your right? I use to buy 20 litres of fuel for 1300 now i am buying for 2900-3000. Are saying this is fair? If minimum wage is 18,000 naira and u are working in ikeja but living in ikorodu using about 600 naira daily on transportation only, how will u feed or pay house rent? We are suffering already so wat will a few days of strike cost us? Haven't u noticed the government hate strike? They always try to avoid it so there must sumtin dat affects them when there are strike actions.

Nobody is saying you should not embark on strike. What we are saying is to protest for reasonable things and issues. Nigerians are been massacred in the north by the day no one is protesting!

does it occur to you that if and when retaliatory attacks starts in the south and the nation's unity is called to question by another civil war, the stupidity of of protesting for free fuel will be very glaring?

and some wonder why their is apathy for fuel subsidy protest in the south east and south south!

In my opinion protesting for subsidy sustenance is silly and lazy!
Re: Nlc To Shut Down Airports, Banks, Etc - Advises Masses To Stockpile. Who Loses? by obowunmi(m): 8:20am On Jan 06, 2012
Point B, don't be silly. Fuel subsidy is the tipping point. Its not the reason why people are protesting.

1 died in Ilorin, 2 down in kano, more counting!!!!. Esele, Owei Lakemfa etc MUST account for the blood of all these illiterate Nigerians. After collecting about 1billion naira from the Major marketers like Oando, ARS and co, they pocketed the money, sent their families abroad and sacrifice uninformed Nigerians.
All these wicked labour leaders know the truth- the gains of subsidy removal, but want to hide the truth from Nigerians.
since the SELFISH Nigerians are against subsidy removal, let Jonathan declare resource control. I can't see why the Niger Deltans will be suffering from Oil pollution, while the Northerners and the few Yorubas will be enjoying the oil proceeds alone. see CAMEROON have started feeling the impact of subsidy removal.
These anti- Niger Deltans really want to destablize this Jona's administration.
When Fashola and Oshiomole introduced taxation, people kicked against it initially, are they still complaining?
why are there so much bad bele for the Niger Deltan who has vowed to restore this country that has been crippled by the Yorubas and Hausas? Enough of these,

NLC ,TUC and other civil rights group should go and fight the gross casualization of the nigerian workers .

They should engage the government to create enabling laws to protect nigerian workers .

Virtually all the companies in nigeria operate with casual workers ,nigerians work for years and go home without any benefits ,
people work in inhuman conditions in most chinese and indian companies .People are sacked without any good reason .

What NLC is after is their own purse ,they are professional actvists ,driving big cars and jumping from one hotel to another in the name of holding meetings and congresses with workers dues and yet nigerian workers are suffering .

There is deep corruption within the labour unions ,Let the various labour groups present to us the account details of the dues being paid by unionised nigerian workers .

They collect money from the oil cabals to organise protests and as well turn around to seek favour from government .
Nigerians should be wise enough to ignore thier call for mass action .Let us rry to educate the uninformed populace that would be cajoled to come to the streets and waste their lives. Most of the executives of the labour unions have their families abroad and yet you profess to be a tru e nigerian .

Nigerians be wise please .

The entire Nigerian system is in a state of decay,we all have to start the fight from somewhere.Where there are laws they don't prosecute the defaulters and where there is non they don't make, because they are not bothered.minor issues like the abuse of the first lady is treated with swift action by our law maker while the suffering of the common man is not noticed, the revolution for a greater Nigeria must start now and faith has only made the fuel increase/subsidy removal a catalyst for that.
