Tears at Computer Village: A Mother’s Desperate Choice

A deeply emotional video has surfaced online showing a young Nigerian single mother breaking down in tears after selling her phone just to feed her daughter.

The viral clip, reportedly captured at Computer Village, Ikeja (Lagos), shows the woman sobbing uncontrollably as she explains that she had no other choice but to part with her only phone to buy food. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Visibly heartbroken, the woman lamented her situation, saying she had hoped to get a reasonable price for her phone — enough to feed her child for a few days.

The raw, unfiltered emotion in her voice struck a chord with thousands of Nigerians, exposing the harsh economic struggles faced by many single parents trying to survive in today’s Nigeria.

“No Mother Should Ever Have to Choose Between Her Phone and Food” — Nigerians React

Since the video hit social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram, Nigerians have been pouring out sympathy for the distressed mother.

One commenter wrote:

“No mother should ever have to choose between her phone and feeding her child. Life is really hard out there. May God send her help.”

Another added:

“This broke me. Phones are a lifeline now — she probably used it to find work or stay in touch with people. Selling it shows how desperate things have become.”

The woman’s story has quickly turned into a symbol of the economic hardship ravaging many Nigerian families — especially women left to raise children alone.
Economic Reality: When Survival Comes Before Connection

The viral moment has also reopened discussions about how economic pressure is pushing Nigerians to extreme measures.
With food inflation, rent hikes, and unemployment rising, many families are being forced to make impossible choices.

For single mothers, the situation is even tougher — balancing childcare with the constant hustle for daily survival.
Social media users are now calling for NGOs, churches, and kindhearted Nigerians to locate and support the woman.

Some users even suggested launching a crowdfunding campaign to help her start a small business or buy a new phone, describing her as “a symbol of silent suffering in today’s Nigeria.”
Debate: Single Motherhood and Shared Responsibility

However, as with most viral Nigerian stories, not everyone agreed on the message.
While many empathized with her plight, a few critics questioned the circumstances that led to her being a single mother in the first place.

One controversial comment read:

“I feel bad, but we can’t ignore that some of these women put themselves in such positions by ignoring red flags.”

Others quickly countered, arguing that fathers must also be held accountable and that the focus should remain on child welfare, not blame.

Social commentators have since used the story to reflect on the breakdown of family values, poor male responsibility, and the lack of social safety nets for struggling parents.

Bigger Picture: When a Phone Sale Exposes a Nation’s Pain

What began as a short clip from Ikeja has become a mirror of the everyday struggles millions of Nigerians face — from job loss to single parenting, hunger, and economic despair.

As the video continues to trend, many are calling for compassion, community support, and empowerment initiatives to help single mothers build self-reliance instead of depending on temporary sympathy.

The woman’s tears may have been shed at Computer Village, but they echo across a nation where survival has become a daily prayer.

💔 What Do You Think?
Should Nigerians focus more on helping single mothers or on addressing the root causes of poverty and neglect?

Don't cry for her for selling her phone, she will get another one anytime fortunes smile on her, again. You rather cry for your people who sold human beings to feed or the carnivores in your region. They deserve your tears more.

Fortunately, a child is made by both a man and a woman. When she is done crying, she should go find the father of the child, either put him on child support immediately, or give the child over to him to raise, and have the authorities aware of this, so anything that happens to that child will not go uninvestigated. undecided

Exactly! Women need to normalize sharing custody of the child with the father of the child. If that man had to care for his own child at least 2 weeks out of every month, with court monitoring added, most men would not go around having kids all over the place. undecided

This is a simplistic take. Some men you can leave your child with or get help from. Some you can't.

➜This is a simplistic take.
Let me guess, a more complicated take is telling us that a father has a reason why he should not be expected to directly fund the well-being of his DNA? Na this same mentality make government for developed countries dey encourage single mothers to ensure that they put their baby daddies on child support so the government can go after them and make sure they pay up. huh

Hopefully, in years to come, the system will become more advanced so that the moment a child is born into the system, their DNA is recorded and automagically, the baby mama & daddy are both put on a leash for at least the next 18 years of the child's life. undecided
