FXKing2012:

But a religious organisation is not a business. Do NGOs pay tax? The money raised by religious organisations are by way of gifts, do u then say all gifts collected should be taxed?

I say any religious organisation that owns a business should have the business taxed, but not the religious organization itself cos any money the organisation receives is only by way of gifts and u cant tax gifts.

You are absolutely spot on. A church/mosque is a religious organisation and we shall give them the benefit of doubt that the money they get is used for charitable purposes, however, if they own a business the business should be taxed

e.g. A church collects donations fron their congregation to build a school. The school fees are so expensive the congregation members cannot afford it and the church explains the fees are high due to the very high standard of the school (teachers, computers, etc). Summary is that the school is being run at a profit so the entity (school) should pay taxes. And if I were to take it a step further the congregation members should be sharehoders in the school board since they have invested in the school project.

Religious Organizations are seen as charities and are therefore not taxed on receipts but income generating arms of religious organizations and their income earning employees are taxed, you can ask LIRS (Lagos Internal Revenue Service)

Jesus ordered peter to pay the tax of not only peter but for all of them Jesus inclusive
.
FXKing2012:

How did Jesus pay tax? He sent Peter, who happened to be a fisherman by profession, to go to the river, cast his net and open the mouth of the first fish that is caught. Now this tells me that the business was taxed, not the ministry.
Remember the ministry had money of it's own which was under the care of Judas Iscariot (which the Bible records that Judas usually steals from), yet Jesus did not dip His hand into it to pay the tax, instead He sent Peter who was a professional fisherman to use his fishing boat and fishing tools to fish and get the money for the tax.

So churches should not be taxed, only their businesses should be taxed.

The government is free to come and tax mosques, let us see the amount of revenue they will raise from there. tongue

The fact that this kind of thread is raised and it is generating so much venom towards churches betrays the fact the church is not being seen to fulfil it's role as a charitable organisation(the bases of which it is tax exempt in the first instance) rather people see preachers profiting from the church and living in extreme opulence. If most churches were seen to be engaging in charitable activities and impacting positively on the welfare of the less priviledge as they ought to be doing, this issue of church paying taxes would not even arise.

The church should be taxed since they have deviated from that charitable aspect and turned into full-scale business venture. How many politicians or bank md's own private jet ? Yet,some pastors have up to four jets and they dont pay tax ? Where and who dictates how the tax is spent if not these same thievies ? It should be made into law that religion/business centres should pay tax.Tax those fu-cking tithe robbers !

Omo, this thread go tough oh, strong words are already being traded. grin
short answer to the post, YES! (religious org should pay tax!)

i will never understand why pastors who claim to walk the walk and talk the talk of Jesus (their master/icon/inspiration etc.) are so not willing to live by he's standards, jesus wasn't reach, infact (it could be argued ) he detested reach dudes. But yet churches and pastors are some of the richest and strongest men in the world. (just funny how religion can be used to favour anyone who uses its opinion.)

Churches still perform so many charitable works. I can tell u that HICC, Synagogue and many other churches feed the poor every week in Lagos. People are ignorant of these facts so they spew so much hate at churches and MOG.
And many of these haters are only being used by the devil to give the church a bad name cos that is what the devil really wanna achieve.

Since they have started profit oriented ventures, there is nothing stopping them from tax payment

[li]It beats me why so much noise is always made about churches and no mention of mosques. Mosques and Imams get millions of dollars from their sponsors in Saudi Arabia and Iran, not to talk of huge donations by rich Muslims, yet everybody just wanna scrutinize and criticize only churches and pastors.[/li]

IT's Not Even About How Jesus Payed Taxes. What Jesus Did And How We Are running Thing's now is not the same.

It's About How We Are Funding The Churches And They Still Don't Get Taxed But You See Priest With Nice Cars Smelling like little Kids Booty Holes. angry
They Should Tax The Church It's Not like They Are Paying The Taxes. It's Like a Whole Community Tax That We All Funded
and raised To pay for our Education System That We Desperately Need. TO Even out The Amount Spent on Fucken Prisons For god Sakes, U.S Spends More on Jail's than Our Children Education. We Lack Police Officers In Needed Areas But Yet We Have cops Wasting There time Picking On Something TO find. Wait for A Fucken Call And Stop Wasting Our Fucken Money on Gas Just Because You got an unlimited Refill Card Does Not mean You Should BE wasting it like nobody's business. The Church Should Be Taxed Just Like Everybody else But The Tax Should Go into What Our Community needs. It would Even out Our Budget Problem and Save us From The Usual, Well There's No Money !

^^^ Churches should not be taxed just because of the lifestyle of pastors; their lifestyle is their personal decision.

And what about NGOs, temples and mosques, shouldnt they be taxed as well?
