The Police Re-organisation Committee says it will recommend an upward review of the salary structure of the Nigeria Police Force in addition to the need for its total overhaul.

Mr Parry Osayande, Chairman of the committee, said in Abuja on Monday that policemen in Nigeria were the worst paid in the whole of the West African sub-region.

“So, we are going to do a major overhaul; if we may use medical parlance, a complete dialysis of the force. Then, we will now take their welfare into consideration. They are underpaid, the worst paid in West Africa, then we shall lay emphasis on their training and retraining.

“That means, all the police institutions will be refurbished, if need be, we build more in all the geo-political zones,” Osayande said.

He said the committee would recommend modern communication equipment for the force.

“Policing involves communication because if you put three million policemen here, in different place and you cannot communicate they are on their own island.

“So, emphasis will have to be on modernization of our communication equipment throughout the length and breadth of this country and of course transportation.

“We are going to try and back police operations with science and technology, that means there will be forensic science laboratory and the rest of them.”

According to him, the Police will continue to embrace professionalism to enable it enforce the laws of the land, protect lives and properties of the citizens as well as to prevent and detect crimes.

“Everybody will be a professional, professional detective, professional intelligent gatherer and so on.” (NAN)

, and they work in one of the worst environments in the world. Really, they deserve our collective sympathy and support for better welfare, and to root out the bad ones among them!.

First aid for the NIGERIAN POLICE;

Teach them the laws of NIGeria,

Train them and equip them

Healthy Salary and insurance and Pension.

Commuinication. (functioning Walkie talkies for all police officers and a shortcode like 911)

I'm sure the committee will come up with very good recommendations. Its the implementation of these recommendations that concerns me.

Last i checked, they, we paid more than soldiers who are doing their job for them, That Osayande should have his head examined. Have you ever heard of anti-bomb squad from the military being blown up? Instead its an anti-bomb policeman, wearing only a bullet proof vest, that dies, He thought it was money,

Exactly! implementation has always been the problem of Nigeria and not recommendations. As a matter of fact i think we have too many recommendations left unattended to. Its just a matter of time and people will forget such recommendation was even given in the first place

the government have been saying this since 1999, surely they get a budget every year, why cant they have a lab, what the point of the lab anyway when they are not even recruiting decent policemen

And whats the correlation between their wages and the service they provide; in 2006/2007 i think, their salaries were increased, i doubt there was any notable improvement

more jobs for the boys, contract for cars, communication gadgets and more HQ buildings with no database

. . .and they are busy giving protection to overfed, pot-bellied men at Abuja.

How can masses fight for them when they are often used as a willing tool to suppress popular will?

Increase in salary, increase in staff strength, more vehicle and communication equipment etc. THE SAME OLD STORIES.

Problems of the Nigeria police as i see them;

1.Employing of illiterate (poor communicating skill= poor understanding= poor implementation of directives)
2. indiscipline (the police is made up of  persons that have questionable character and have very little respect for the rule of law)
3. No clear guideline (when arresting or releasing a person)
4. Poor handing of equipment and guns (have a close look at the vehicles allocated to the police and compare them with Army, custom civil defence etc)
5. poor welfare (not salary increase)

likely solution (just a few)
1. Training to be handled by expatriates (General training on handing of guns and rule of engagement, character, dressing, presentation etc)
2. weeding out (those that fail to meet up with the standard required of the job be move to other less demanding job such as prison service, fire service or show the way out)

i don't need to read the post to agree with that.
here in UAE, most policeman i knew, their private cars are landcruiser 2010 model, nissan patrol 2010 model, porcshe all kinds.
police men here use latest car, latest technology.
here in UAE, when a police man enters your car registration number on his computer, he will have all your data with him, in fact he will give you a call

Is that an excuse for resorting to the killing of innocent Nigerians? They should unleash their anger on the corrupt leaders who are responsible for their plights not the citizens.
Re: Nigeria Police Are The Worst Paid In The World – Osayande by Nobody: 8:17am On Feb 22, 2012
Complete overhaul of the police is long overdue.
1. Sack all policemen without O'Level.
2. Turn all policemen with O'Level to traffic warders and security men.
3. Employ Graduates and ND holders to be the real policemen.
4. Make them the highest paid with good insurance package
5. Any policeman involved in corruption, injustice, bribery etc should be jailed and everything he has should be confisticated by the govt.
That way they wont think of extorting innocent citizens.

The problem of the NPF is more than lack of funds and equipment. Improved welfare packages will motivate the officers but will not improve their performance. The institution is cursed. Corruption, nepotism, mediocrity, religious fanatism etc. has resulted in a systemic collapse. The emergence of the terrorist group, Boko Haram has further exposed the rust in the NPF. There is an urgent need for the reformation of the Police.

Well said. No amount will change the mentality of the men of the force. The problem lies with the leadership of NPF. YOU CANNOT FIND AN ORDERLY SYSTEM WITHOUT AN ORDERLY LEADER

It makes a lot of sense to say they are the worst in the world because they are paid the lowest in the world.
