Hello everyone I left University of Benin in 1984 as an Optometrist
( hitherto loosely known as an Optician)
And I have been involved in additional endeavors.
In short with an MBA 1991 at the University of Lagos and more.
So lets leave it there.

So I want to help with advice and possible diagnosis about your eyes problems pathology, contact and prescription lenses.
*** A caveat: this will not be a substitute to seeing your eye doctor and I will not refer you to any.
Good eye clinics are around, just look for them.
I will be here to answer your few questions.including your elderly ones

Hi Doc, my hubby has redness in one of this eyes, the redness doesnt cover the whole eyes, just a part of it. He was given some eyedrops in the hospital, after using them, it will disppear and appear again after sometime. what is the final solution to this? He did an eye test about 2years ago and a glass was recommended, he uses it when reading.
Re: Ask Me About Your Glasses Eye Problems by mgolo(m): 3:21pm On Mar 02, 2012
For owolabi:

Sorry I am getting back here later, partly I am getting used to navigate through here and work too.
As an albino, most are naturally shortsighted and will be using minus lenses as prescription.
Oh yes, contact lenses will be good. any special contact lenses? not really but if you are successful with them in terms
of adaption, soft contact lenses would reduce your nystagmus (ie the natural side to side movement of your eyeballs)
expected to make your vision clearer than glasses.
But it will be nice to see your eye doctor to get both glasses and contact lenses since you will need either depending on your situation.

Udoka:
your hubyy with recurrent one eye redness.
let him confirm by checking if one eye sees better the other.
I am not suspecting inflammation of the white part -best I can put (uveitis) so he needs to check the internal aspect of that prblematic eye.
it could also be a situation of stress.
But rememeber if he wears his current power of glasses the betttr.
but the redness might not be as a result of need for glassses.
thanks

Hi Doctor
More grease to your power
Mine is a different issue, i am not suffering from either long or shortsightness perhaps i would call it an eye infection. I always expierence excess tears whenever i yawn or reading books. It runs down my cheeks and wet my t-shirts, its kind of embarrassing when people look at you and ask whats making you cry like a baby. Just few mins of reading a book, the next thing is tears. Rolling down my face and wetting my book. Plz wat do i do to correct this abnormaly.
Thanks as i await your response
God Bless

Heavy tearing when reading-and you may be wrong-means your eyes are strained.
Do a proper eye test, most likely positive power of lenses will be given to you.
I wish I knew your age.
Tearing excessively when yawning, may need an examination of the tiny drainage hole of your lower lid ,it is located towards the nose.
But remember, most people tear normally, when they yawn and i hope you are not exagerrating this.
See your eye doctor to check that the hole is not blocked.
I am trying not to use medical jargons o,o

Thanks Doc, i am not exxagerating, i know and see how other people tear when they yawn, theirs is not like mine, so i definitely know sth is not normal with my eyes besides i think the thing started after my secondary coz i was a border and then we used to study every night at close range with a kerosene latern. Since then i started observing this,
As per my age, am in my late 20's
Must i use glasses? Isn't there any correction fluid?i mean, like an eye drop
Thanks doc

Olibyno:
to the best of my knowledge, there is no known eye drop or liquid that eliminate a refractive error if thats what you have, when you your eye test.

The analogy that comes to mind is this: if you were bound to be short person, you could increase your height only when you wear shoes with high heel.
(though we know there is a risky surgery to give you some inches)
So when your eyes trully demand lenses, you would see better when you wear the correct power as glasses or contact lenses.
Please relax your mind,go for a proper eye exam. Let them check your lower lids as regards your excessive lacrimation.
Lastly, the years of reading under subdued illumination has taken it toil, glasses may be calling to assist and not to "correct"
Enjoy!

HI Doc. i had cataract removed from my left eye some years back . I cant see properly with the eye, the vision is blur and if i attempt using it i will have two vision(one clear and One blur) i went back to the private hospital that did the surgery and was told there is nothing they can do except i see an experience surgeon. my fear is can the eye sight be restored and which affordable clinic can help me with it. because i fear it might pose a problem in the nearest future.presently i noticed the eye is falling out(half past six position)
Re: Ask Me About Your Glasses Eye Problems by mgolo(m): 8:29pm On Mar 09, 2012
Mrskem09.
Let me start this way. It is very curious that the hospital if it is a specialised eye practice had cataract removal which could have only been done by an eye surgeon,in the first instance.
And now such practice could not manage your post operative situation. Rather you are being asked to get further attention elsewhere.
I hope the practice was competent in the first instance.
Now assuming you know what cataract is, so if the opaque natural lens was removed, this modern time an intra ocular lens(IOL) of a power of about +10 is inserted as the bad natural one is removed,
If there are no complications inside the eye etc then this is done.
The eventual vision should be close to normal and the 2 eyes should work together to see singly and not double.
But if the eye did not have an IOL, or you were not giving a reasonable high +lens for that eye(a 2nd option) double vision will take place.
A plus power contact lens only for that eye is another option if the eye can feel not too irritated by it.
The major challenge of monocular cataract removal is balancing the optics with the better eye to avoid diplopia(double vision)
now you cant see well with it:
the outside, black part (cornea)and the back of inside the eye (the light receiving section) the retina must be okay.
Otherwise, the eye may not see better with glasses etc.
So the eye doctor you'll see must check all these.
If the eye appears to be coming out. Investigation for complication because of surgery or a situation is responsible.
From what I can garner,a renewed examination is needed but I cannot say here what is the best that one could get from the eye.
So get a good glasses not necessarily with power if you dont need it for the better eye.
This is to have it as a barrier for the good one.
No chances.
They may block glasses lens of the operated eye to maintain single vision.
Affordable clinic? Government hospitals but the long wait, 2 or 3months or so
but visit them.
I cant recommend private, expensive but good ones around.
Say to them i want to see an ophtalmologists or a good optometrist to exam and refer you.
Oops

Hello Doctor,

Please how can one treat TALC RETINOPATHY ?

A close relation of mine had siezure and was taken to the hospital, regain consciousness and worst enough the doctor treated him for malaria during which according to him a nurse gave him Quinine intravenously, this immediately gave him some hearing trouble which later faded away and a disc/C shape like object form immediately in his left eye, since then the eye has not been seeing well and giving him double vision cos of the object.

He was refered to UBTH Benin and they seems not to be able to help, they only told him their is a C shape object formed in his eye and prescribed a drug for him which did not help.

Through much personal research, i beleive he has Talc Retinopathy.

Is there any good drug that can clear his eye ? Thank you.

Dear bethor:
sorry am getting here late.
You see by mere description from your own observartion for a very challenging problem like this, needs a very thorough clinical approach.
I mean a proper differential daignosis. You have talked about a C type object in the eye.
Which part of the eye, inside or outside?
I believe the Ubth people had a better presentation than I am.
If there was no solution from Ubth, what I will want you to do are 2 things.
Dont be shy=as most patients are in Nigeria- ask the Ubth people: what is the diagnosis, what is the prognosis and why no relief?
If you are not satisfied as you are here, seek another Ophtalmologist for a second opinion.
Now let me tell you that the issue of double vision can be reversible but for the C object which I dont understand, this could be permanent.
And again,if it is a problem with the retina,it is always a challenging affair especially if the macula the point for critical vision has been affected.
My advice: a second opinion.
Thanks
M
Re: Ask Me About Your Glasses Eye Problems by Nobody: 8:31pm On Mar 26, 2012
Thank you Doctor for your response, he said the UBTH people were talking about occular pressure/risk of glaucoma and not very sure of what it is and they ended up prescribing TAMOLOL for him to use which is not working.

By what causes it and what happened, i suggest if you can give any advice as to the treatment of "TALC RETINOPATHY".

By my understanding, Talc Retinopathy been the deposit of Talc or other cutting agent on the retina as a result of the intravenouse administration of some drugs which are suppose to be administered via a different mode, in his case QUININE was shot directly through his vein and this resulted into the problem.

My question is how can one treat this condition and get the deposit on the retina to fade away.

The C or arc shape object is inside the left eye and not visible except with the aid of the Opthamologist instrumemt used in looking into the eye.

Please note also that the object is cloudy in nature.

Await your further advice on TALC RETINOPATHY.
Thank you.
Re: Ask Me About Your Glasses Eye Problems by mgolo(m): 3:07pm On Mar 31, 2012
Bethor:
i feel your concern,I strongly suggest that you seek a second opinion in a good eye clinic,be it private or clinic.
Let another diagnosis take place:retinopathy or otherwise
(I can't confirm the situation and the prognosis going only by what you say and describe)

If glaucoma has been concluded upon, you can not easily say that the Timalol is not working..
Why do I say so?
The intraocular pressure(IOP) must be known before the drop regimen and after.
The readings made after will indicate if IOP has reduced or not.
Of course,we assume the drop is not fake.
So bethor, walk up to another good clinic for 2nd opinion.
By the way,has seeing double gone?
Warmest
'M

No the seeing double is not gone.
