[quote author=JW214]Ibadan coined from "Eba Odan" meaning a place near(Eba) or at the entry of the savanah and forest(Odan), now called "Ibadan"

Ogbomoso was named after an activity of a Warrior "Soun" who killed "Elemosho", a terrorist terrorissing the Oyo people in those days, thus the name of the King and the town goes thus: Soun(d name of d warrior) of Ogbo ri Elemosho(who beheaded and killed Elemosho) which is now called "Ogbomosho" today

Ilorin: it was coined from Ilu(town) Erin(elephant)
Illorin was coined from 'Ilo' 'Irin' which tranlates as 'Iron grinder.Legend as it that there was a stone there that hunters used to sharpen their matchets.

By some accounts abuja was named after the first king Abubakar thus:

The land now called Abuja was originally the south-western part of the ancient Habe (Hausa) kingdom of Zazzau (Zaria). It was populated for centuries by several semi-independent tribes. The largest of the tribes was Gbagyi (Gwari), followed by the Koro and a few other smaller tribes. In early 1800s when Zaria fell to Fulani invaders, Muhammed Makau, fled south with some followers and his brothers- Abu Ja and Kwaka. Abu Ja succeeded Makau in 1825.

The full name of the king was Abubakar; Abu was his nickname. By some accounts his fair complexion earned him the nickname “Ja” which means “red” or “fair-skinned” in Hausa. He became known as “Abu-Ja” meaning Abu the red” or “Abubakar the fair one “other sources say that the “Ja” is a shortened form of Ishaku Jatau, his father’s name. King Abubakar founded the kingdom of Abuja

As for Suleja

"The Emirate (of Abuja) was then asked to give up Abuja for the Federal Capital Territory. Again the council was divided. In the end, they agreed believing that the name of the emirate would become famous throughout the world. The previous town of Abuja was renamed Suleja after the then Emir Suleiman Barau and “Ja” the last syllable of the first emir’s name.

Surprised to hear that Abuja was part of the ancient Zazzau emirate. Who succeeded him(Abubakar)? Does it mean that Gbagyi ppl didn't have kings before the nineteenth century? Was the present Abuja a kingdom those days? Who says they were semi-independent? Politics at work. shocked

mr_man: There is a SABO in almost every state in Nigeria, what does SABO mean?
Sabo is the short form of an hausa word sabongeri (I'm not sure of the hausa spelling) meaning 'foreigner's quaters'. That is why almost every 'Sabo' is highly populated by Northerners.
