Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has described her nomination by African leaders for the top job of the World Bank as ”an unforgettable honour.”

She also insisted that the opposition of the American government to her nomination would not dampen her spirit.

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who was spoke at the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Eagle Square, Abuja, weekend, thanked African leaders for their backing.

She said: “Sincerely, I feel honoured by the decision of African leaders to back me for the job and I believe that the final decision on who occupies the office would be beneficial to the global community.

“It is elating that across the continent, the leaders spoke with one voice, and their gesture is directed at me; I am eternally grateful to them all for their support.”

Asked if she felt her chances of getting the job were being threatened by the U.S- nominee for the job, the minister said the U.S. government’s stance merely confirmed her recognition as the right candidate for the office.

She said: “I am aware of the opposition by the American government, and I can tell you that rather than dampen my spirit, it further strengthens my belief in the fact that my candidature caught the attention of very influential nations, especially the United States of America.

“The most important thing to me here is the recognition by political and renowned academic leaders across the continent for the job, which would further give the continent a better position in global economic matters.“Even if eventually I don’t get the job, I still will feel honoured for being the target of a continental acceptance on a global matter that affects global economic growth.”

I love this lady very much and without any doubt on mind she would fly high and make us proud. But I also doubt it if she would be elected as the final candidate, simply because of her Nigerian label.

The poor leadership structure, high level of corruption and the unbelivable/ unnecessary low standard of living in the country have changed the green white and green to black, black and black.
And this image remains the same until Nigerians are sensible enough to rescue this nation from the hands of greedy vultures, that call themselves leaders.

Unfortunately, this despicable image would be the main reason why Mrs Iweala would be rejected at the final minutes.

Even to get a $10 per hour job as a NIGERIAN in USA becomes a dream, all because of poor leadership and ridiculous images we have given ourselves all around the world.
So, it is not a terrible thing for Mrs Iweala to continue to dream.

It is up to all of us.

It would amount to self deceit if anyone sincerely thinks madam will get the job against the US nominee. Nothing to be honored about ma.. You created the nomination for yourself by making sure to implement world bank beneficial policies in Nigeria

Is she eminently qualified for the job? Yes, will she win? Hard to say but at least getting the recognition of top academics nd financial gurus is enough testament to her worth. Go ahead nne you have nothing to lose.

It's not hard to say if she'll win or not. It's a question of if the American Government wants her in the position (and they don't they want their own guy and always have had an American running the Bank).

Yes it's the World Bank (an International organisation), but America invests the most money therefore America has the most votes. It's very much American controlled.

IMF is a world organisation that very much European controlled....

To cut things short, Western countries like to be in control of the World market so I don't see them giving up any kind of power too soon.

like her oga jonathan fail woefully at the ecowas election, i wish her the same. i used to respect this woman until she join these criminals called pdp for the second time. the last straw that broke the camel's back was her involvement in the removal of fuel subsidy leaving behind her corrupt colleagues in govt.
she will not, shall not and must not win. charity they say, begins at home. what has she done to help the poor masses of her country? how many corrupt officials has she exposed here in nigeria?
world bank please look elsewhere for that position before this woman introduce her experience from pdp to destroy all you have laboured for. i don't trust any nigerian with that sensitive position and not the one that is serving under this very corrupt govt of pdp and jonathan.
how can the world leaders be mad enough to choose someone from a dark country above other countries of the world?
they have destroyed nigeria and will do same if they have their ways in the world bank.

This is the most important part to me. She has just confirmed to me her reasoning if African political leaders whom are characterised with heavy corruption and who's economies are not doing so well are her renowned leaders then she is set to rule World bank the way she's done to Nigeria by throwing us into deeper state of poverty and yet expects to be acclaimed the economic messiah.

What recognition are we talking about here. She was recognised by corrupt African leaders wherf she had gone to play the script of her master(world bank) to fund ailing europe at the expence of afri2n countries. The latest being her own country, nigeria during the fuel subsidy removal. I was surprised to see that she cannot reconcile simple figures during the fuel subsidy removal rage. Does world bank reward mediocrity.

I understand the EM countries wanting to participate, and they should. However…it is very clear when you look at World Bank donors, where the money is coming from. So it seems natural to me that the US would lead the institution. By far, the top 10 donors provide the bulk of the funding and even within the top 10, the US provides 10X the amount that Australia donates (2010 data).

Will emerging countries “lose interest”? I am skeptical…

Although Okonjo-Iweala is not the ideal candidate for the job, I do believe America must learn that American hegemony cannot last forever. We still have the largest voting bloc in the World Bank, but that does not mean we also have the power to deceide who each president of the World Bank is going to be. While the third world was racing to become the first world, we were more a dictatorship in that regard. However, it is time for America to learn the very painful lesson that we are not the only world power and we must take a seat with about 10 other major players and dozens of new players and allow some of the newly arrive countires meeting first world standards an opportunity to lead. A classy act by the USA would be to allow a newly emerged but peaceful nation to have an opportunity to become the new President of the World Bank. We need to start demonstrating/practicing what we preach.

very good she preferred to dump the so called serving my beloved country to world bank job as if she is gonna make any decision besides what they ask her to say. This is how she love her country, definitely, she is a betrayal just like her father. i doubt if a northerner is in that position serving his country will want to leave for something else.

They will continue to betray this country. co-ck s-ucker!
