World Bank: NY Times picks Okonjo-Iweala over Obama’s choice

THE influential New York Times, perhaps, has picked Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala over US President Barack Obama’s nominee for the World Bank presidency, Jim Yong Kim.

Comentators on the paper said: “Whereas Okonjo-Iweala has already attracted strong endorsements from publications at the cutting edge of global financial journalism like The Economist, and The Financial Times, this new endorsement enhances the profile of Okonjo Iweala.

Conventional qualities

The New York Times is unequivocal in its support saying as an “economist, diplomat and former World Bank managing director, she offers many conventional qualities of bank presidents” adding, “she breaks the mould as a woman from an African country where she fought to reduce the country’s debt, gain greater access to international credit markets and battle corruption.”

Advancing merit over politics, and given the current global economic and social challenges, Okonjo-Iweala, is the best fit for the presidency of the World Bank, the paper said, even as the influential newspaper praised Obama’s choice as an “inspired choice.”

More importantly also, argues the paper, the tradition that allows all presidents of the World Bank to be American, just as the headship of the International Monetary Fund traditionally goes to Europeans is antiquated and needs be replaced by a merit-centred consideration.

The New York Times noted, however, that what the bank needed was “a president with experience beyond Washington’s narrow political and economic circles.” It posited that although “Dr. Kim has worked on development in the poorest countries, one major success: leading a World Health Organization initiative that provided access to H.I.V. treatment to millions of people, the new president must also tackle broader issues of economics and growth, and manage the prickly political leaders who are the bank’s overseers. That is why the bank board must take a serious look at Dr. Kim’s strongest challenger, Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s finance minister.”

The paper argued that nevertheless, a merit-based consideration should not exclude qualified Americans, the paper said, but even as much, “neither should it guarantee them a job” in a world where emerging economies contribute a significant share to global growth, and are “rightly demanding a greater say in decision-making.”

Global health expert

Yong Kim is a South Korean-born medical doctor and president of Ivy League Dartmouth College of whom the paper admits,“ has a stellar reputation as a global health expert.”

Of the third candidate, José Antonio Ocampo, a Professor at Columbia University in New York, and who is the former Colombian finance minister and high-ranking United Nations official, the paper said “he, too, is a credible contender with long experience in development and international policy.” However, with regards to Dr. Kim, the paper said: “The bank will almost certainly do well under his leadership. But it would do even better if the process for choosing the next president were truly competitive and fully transparent.”

Why do I have this nagging feeling that this woman may snag this job?
Well, I am already very proud of her. Win or lose, she has made Nigeria proud. cool

If she gets it, then my theory would be complete. smiley

I actually have the feeling that Obama wants her to be the President of the World Bank, hence his nomination of an unsuitable candidate.

The World Bank was part of the Marshall Plan created by the US to help reconstruct Europe in the aftermath of the World War II. It is the brain child of the US and other countries were only invited as stakeholders. I think it is more like biting the fingers that feeds one by the audacity of Nigeria to challenging and questioning the authority of the US or its right to nominate the president of the Bank. If Nigeria for that matter feel strongly about showcasing the talent of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, I think it already had the opportunity to do so with the ministerial portfolio given to her which has not really proven her prowess in helping the poor and those at the lowest rung of the economic ladder but has failed woefully. Also, it will be wise to start their own program at home to help the multitude of the poverty-stricken masses who can barely rake in $3 a day for food.
Charity they say begins at home. Jonathan and his candidate have not convinced me they deserve the attention and accolade they are seeking at the highest level of the World Bank.

World Bank: Japan Backs US Nominee

01 Apr 2012

Jim Yong Kim, the U.S. nominee for the next World Bank president, leaves the Finance Ministry after a meeting with Japan’s Finance Minister Jun Azumi in Tokyo, Sunday.

By Tunde Sulaiman, with agency reports

Japan will support Jim Yong Kim, the U.S. nominee for the next World Bank president, Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi said on Sunday after meeting the candidate.

According to Reuters, Kim is visiting Tokyo as part of his world tour to seek support for his candidacy.

The American is contesting for the top job with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mr. Jose Antonio Ocampo of Colombia.

While the Nigerian is yet to embark on her own world tour, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has already received the endorsements of respected London-based publications such as The Economist and the Financial Times.

She also has the banking of Africa, with the continent’s economic powerhouse, South Africa, whose President, Jacob Zuma of South Africa along with President Allassaine Quattara of Cote d’Ivoire, had played a key part in getting their Nigerian counterpart, President Goodluck Jonathan to allow the continent field Okonjo-Iweala for the job.

Okonjo-Iweala, who opened up exclusively to THISDAY over the weekend, on her historic entry into the race to become the next president of the World Bank, said she was overwhelmed by the support she had reveived for her quest.

“Without the efforts of key African leaders and the gracious acceptance of my nomination by the president, none of this would have been possible. I am really grateful and highly honoured that Africa has united behind my nomination.”

As expected most Nigerians are enthusiastic about her quest and solidly behind her with the Peoples Democratic Party and the House of Representatives also throwing their weight behind her.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, said the Nigerian delegation to the 126th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting would use the opportunity of the forum to rally support for Okonjo-Iweala, in her bid to clinch the presidency of the World Bank.

But, a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell, had dammed expectations warning that notwithstanding the growing support for Okonjo-Iweala, she might not win the presidency of the World Bank.

According to him, her victory is unrealistic because she does not have the support of America, European countries and Japan, who have 54 per cent of the voting power.

Campbell, in a memo, also said South Africa has a hidden agenda for promoting Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy.

The World Bank board of directors will choose through a system of weighted voting in which the US has 16 per cent, the EU states altogether 29 per cent, and Japan nine per cent.

As the US supported Christine Lagarde of France for the International Monetary Fund top spot, the Europeans are highly likely to favour Kim. That means Kim could anticipate 54 per cent of the vote.

Campbell said based on Nigerian journalists’ calculation, South Africa’s support for Okonjo-Iweala might generate African sympathy for its candidate for the position of chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosanza Dlamini-Zuma, and soften Nigeria’s opposition to the candidacy of the former wife of South African President, Jacob Zuma.

Nigeria has opposed her and supported the incumbent, Gabon’s Jean Ping.

Kim has embarked on world tour visiting countries that matter while you continue to celebrate endorsements from NYT, Economist and FT that do not have a single vote. Her ambition is dead on arrival.
