My house? Never. .
But one period in the 90's, there were gun battles EVERYNIGHT in my estate. The wild 90's! They would beat up or even kill guards who shouted out or tried to fight. Some of the mallams became legends from their ability to repel attacks.
I remember one incident one sunday evening involving the house behind ours.
. All we heard were gunshots which put the neighbourhood on alert. Followed later by the sound of screeching cars, a gate being rammed down and then silence.
Then we heard sound of people running frantically, and whimpering. A man shouted, get the car keys, followed two minutes later by another shout, "He's dead".
What followed is a scream of ANGUISH I'm getting goosebumps from recalling. . cry a lady is RAW MENTAL PAIN screamed from the very depth of her soul.
Apparently, robbers went to their house and were operating, unbeknown to their sleeping brother who awoke and challenged/engaged them in a struggle and they pumped hot lead into him. . sad He was about 26yrs old or so. R.I.P man, I still rememeber the dude and when he was trying to toast my sister. . embarassed

Another tale involving my uncle this time (who is a major power-broker) happened in the 90's too.
Robbers came to his house and this dude is a real strong man, not all them pussy niggers that carry mopol everywhere. Having gained entrance into his compound, the first shot the trained alsatian dog (the other one quickly saw what they did to his dead colleague and bailed the fuc.k out fast! grin dog quickly ran to Chisco park looking for bus to convey it to its village! tongue
My uncle na, ever-agile just packed his young family inside master bedroom where the household started praying, the guy wasn't sure if they were assassins or just robbers cos they were plenty and the guy is a businessman/politician. . So he gives his younger bro ammo to be reloading for him (that one claimed he got gun and was providing covering fire sha, we never confirm) and my uncle started returning blasting away these beasts like he was Duke Nukem! angry
Trust me, this is the most epic battle u've heard of in lagos, but the story long small. If u want me to continue, u have to indicate wink but if I'll just waste my time typing, lemme jejely do these financials & forget nairaland. . lipsrsealed

yeah!
Once in 2005.
They were already in the compound and our neighbour had alerted my dad so he came and took everyone of us out of our rooms to a passage.
We saw a sihlouette of one of the robbers and screamed in unison..OLE OLE to alert the night guards and everyone around,
my dad in his confusion went to take a knife from the kitchen-funny!
We called a eighbour who contacted policemen and gave them directions to our place but policemen never showed up.
We were awake and scared till daybreak expecting them to come knock our door.out neigbour who alerted us had two babies,we didnt hear their cries and we thought they had operated there.
We learnt the next morning that they left as soon as we screamed so loud to attract peeps.
We didnt spend another one month in that house before we moved cuz their menace was reoccuring all around.

I remember one experience that happened last year. It was a Friday night and I was staying with a friend around Ilasa that period. Often times, I preferred sleeping on the balcony due to constant power outage but that night I chose not to. After being served dinner by his fiancee and younger sister, we all got gisting and we were 6 in all at home. We only locked the net leading to the balcony and left the door unlocked. I was woken up around 1:30am by his younger sister that there were thieves in the compound. He stays on the 1st floor and she was braved to quickly lock the iron door. All we knew was that they were many and found their way into the compound by forcing the gate opened. They knocked on the security man's door according to his story later in the morning but he claimed he chose not to attend to them and all he did was to hold his dagger positioning himself to attack them should they attack him.
They knocked on the apartment downstairs but they couldn't gain access because it was an iron door. The lady said she actually woke up but the husband and her baby did not and because when she first came into Lagos that was how they were robbed in her uncle's house she has learnt never to attend to people who knock at unholy hours of the night. They tried climbing on the fence as a means of coming upstairs but guess they got hurt by the iron bars on the fence which was there for protection. We woke up in the morning and on the window of the passenger side of my car we saw blood finger prints.
They were in the neighborhood for over an hour as they went to the compound opposite us and all we saw was that they kept runnning everywhere inside the house which was a face me i face you. Funny enough, my friend's younger brother called the police who gave us an emergency number which we called and they promised showing up to no avail. He suggested we all go into the ceiling to hifde but I told them i wasn't willing to take such risk so I brought out a N1000 from my wallet and kept it in the pocket of the trouser I wore the previous day and then hid my wallet. I also brought my blackberry and kept it around me and told the others if they wanted they could go hide in the ceiling that I would cover up for them that they all went to the vigil if those guys got access upstairs.
The Police did not show until after they left because we called them about an hour after and they claimed they were very close. After they left and we called back to tell them they had left, within 10minutes, they came around and I was like, they were only waiting for those guys to leave before they come. It was a very nasty experience.
Outside that, I have had some close experiences like driving on Eko Bridge, they have robbed the car beside me once, like 2 cars ahead of me at another time and so then, I started making sure I do not leave the office earlier than 10 because I don't want to experience traffic just to avoid being robbed.
Growing up too in the early 90's, there was so much robbery in Festac but the good thing was that we had people who usually fought them so it was never successful as they usually exchanged bullets in the night and then in the morning you get to know whose house they attacked.

THIS was a long time ago!!

I was still in J.S.S 1. My family had just moved from rented apartment into our very own. NOW! This movement was tricky as it was done in a hurry. The house had barely been finished. It hadnt even been painted (not on the inside nor out). We were surronuded by mostly bush and uncompleted/vacant properties. SO! it was a matter of either move in and work from the inside, or pay another 2 years rent and finish the house. . . We took the former.

THE burglary proofs had been installed, security lights, we had a live in security (with a pregnant wife) and a dog. My dad bought a hunters dane gun for the guard to use at night as we all knew the area was rife with criminal elements. We took the standard precautions of coming home early, locking the gate and holding onto the keys (as against leaving it with the guards).

ON this faithful day, our gaurd whose wife was heavily pregnant came to inform my parents that he would be sending his wife to the village. He asked for time off to escort his wife to the bus park and put her on a bus and that he will be back before 4p.m same day. He was granted permission and so he left with his wife, locking the security house behind him and taking the keys along. Time rolled by and the hands of the clock struck 4p.m and the guard was not back. NOW remember that this was the 90's and cellphones and analogue phones were only for the wealthy and government officials so there was zero means of communication. The clock struck 6, 7 and by 8p.m, my dad and I came outside to lock the gate only to realise that the guard had the gate keys with him. So we grabbed a couple of spares we had with us and locked all the gates. The guard house had a staple & lock type key on it and so we simply broke down the door and grabbed the gun and bullets from his house and locked the door.

GOODNIGHT!! Yup! We said our prayers and went to bed. . . . At about 12:30am, our dog starts barking and running wild all over the compound. The dog is racing and running back and forth. Next thing we heard was a loud bang on the kitchen burglary proof. SO!! Let me explain how the layout of the house looks like. Its a long rectanglar house built on a similarly shaped land. The front entrance is at one small end of the rectangle, the back entrance (through the kitchen) was by the side of the rectangle and then on the opposite side of the rectangle (backyard) is the boys quaters attached to the main house with an entrance into the house. The Boys quarters opens out into undeveloped space big enough to house half of the present house. At this time, we used that space for a small farm.

BACK to the robbery. The bang continues as the robbers were calling my dad by his surname and asking him to open the door, otherwise, they will break in and shoot him. My dad rushes into our rooms (my siblings and I) and bundle us into his room and orders us to lie flat on the ground with our faces to the ground and asked us not to move. My grandmother was also around during this robbery as she was staying with us on OMUGWO since my littel sister was barely 6months old. After this, the banging continued and got even louder. Next thing, they fired a shot in the air. . My dad grabbed the dane gun we had recovered from the guardhouse earlier, loaded it, pulled the hammer back puts the barrel of the gun against the window in the direction of the robber (whom he had a clear view of) and pulled the trigger. . . . . . . . . NO SHOT!!! yup!! the gun wouldnt fire. He reloads the gun with a different cartridge and fires again. . . Still no shot!! Now my dad quickly packs up the gun, walks towards the back of the house, out the door through the boys quarters, walks into the farm, hides the gun under a pile of dead grass, walks back into the house and opens the door for the robbers. Upon first seeing my dad, see two hot slaps!!!

To be continued. . .

To God be the Glory.

i love that To God be the glory.
mine was in 1993. occurred around 8 pm. due to lack of electricity, the generator was on. my aunt went out to buy something.after a while we heard her shouting something but we didn't understand what was going on. next thing we knew we saw two boys dragging her back into the house.they pointed their local guns at us and gold us to lie down.they then dragged my father to his room and told him to bring out all his money after which they locked us all in the toilet.through the window i could see two more boys at the gate acting as lookouts. when they left, i broke the door and ran to the gate (i was young,i was stupid and i was seeing red and believed in action movies then).i checked the street but couldn't identify any of them. i ran to the junction and stood for a while searching for them (still don't know what gave me the liver).i was not wearing any shoes or shirt. never saw them. called the police who came the next day and their keys words were "its those same boys". thank God i have grown out of that stupidity

its so unfortunate when issues of such comes up. Our family had a terrible experience during that time. Heavy guys banging on our door in the middle of the night, caring less about who was inside or what can happen when the step in. We ran out of the house Lol for safety, the ransacked the house and found nothing. This sounds easy but was so terrific.

My brother went to buy a new cuttlass one day, when I asked him why, his response was that ' look I cannot aow people of your age to come in one night and start harassing me so I bought this weapon to discipline them'. But one faithful night they we are attacked and what they could only find was the cutlas and #170. They asked us what the new cutlass was for and he replied 'for monthly sanitation sir'. Well they just asked us to prostrate and they gave us five strokes of the cutlas each. Till this moment I still feel the pain on my bottom. That is my story.
