It has emerged that new speaker dodge NYSC.

If this confirmed, he should be REMOVED with immediate effect.

Many of us attended the NYSC in crazy part of Nigeria; doing Nigeria proud and following the law.

We not accept anything less from any other graduate from Nigeria

Barely one week in office as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole may have been presented with his own political baptism.
Some unnamed members are alleging that the new Speaker evaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The NYSC scheme should be canceled outrightly. It is just a waste of peoples' time. Graduates should be working.

Your opinion though very wrong. The scheme had done more good than harm since its inception.

O please d scheme has overstayed its useful life, it has become totally senseless, meaningless, a death trap (for corpers traveling to places where they would have had no business going in the first place – ask me iv lost 3 friends), its now a money spinning vehicle for ZI’s. anyways as long as he has an exemption certificate or the real certificate if he served or not is irrelevant, afterall madam speaker dint even have a degree at all
Re: New Speaker Dogded Nysc? by ojimboIV: 1:15pm On Nov 07, 2007
all these allegations will not help matters, are these guys just going to pick bones in the house or are they going to do the business of the nation?
perhaps mr. speaker had mitigating circumstances that warranted his exemption from the nysc programme at the time.

they should get down to business asap and stop wasting tax payers' money.
Re: New Speaker Dogded Nysc? by folem: 1:17pm On Nov 07, 2007
The Speaker should honourably resign if he has no exemption certificate and he should do that A.S.A.P to avoid the type of rowdy sessions we had in the last few weeks.

exactly. if you are a graduate and less than 30yrs, you have to serve your fatherland. It is the law.

He does not have two heads. Many of us also served.

O please d scheme has overstayed its useful life, it has become totally senseless, meaningless, a death trap

This has nothing to do with NYSC but bad roads in Nigeria. People just got roasted on Lagos-Ibadan highway. They were not go on NYSC.

all these allegations will not help matters, are these guys just going to pick bones in the house or are they going to do the business of the nation?

We need to start establishing that we will not accept any 'short-cut' to success in Nigeria.

The NYSC scheme should be canceled outrightly.  It is just a waste of peoples' time.  Graduates should be working.

They have lifetime to work but that 1yr must be given to serve Nigeria untill NYSC is scrapped.

I once asked if this guy will last. Obviously he also has a baggage. Away with him now. By the time it is 8 years, Yorubal would have produced 8 or more speakers

Barely one week in office as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole may have been presented with his own political baptism.
Some unnamed members are alleging that the new Speaker evaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
The scheme is mandatory for Nigerian graduates of universities and polytechnics but those who are 30 years or above on completion of their studies are exempted.
Also exempted are those who have served in Nigerian military and police.
Section 13 of the NYSC Act (amended in 1993) makes it criminal for anyone to dodge the service, under-declare educational qualifications or work in either public or private sector without undergoing national service.
Some House members, rattled by the way and manner the former Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Etteh, fell from the office, are insisting Bankole dodged the scheme.
The new Speaker will be 38 today.
Going by his CV, Bankole was 26 years old when he started working in 1995 at Freight Agencies, Lagos.
Efforts to get the response of the Speaker to the allegation last night were unsuccessful.
But THISDAY learnt that Bankole will address a news conference on the issue at 12 noon today, two hours before the House resumes sitting.
As if responding to the issue, however, the Speaker’s father, Chief Alani Bankole, said yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo State, that the banana peel, the political phrase used to describe the fall of politicians from exalted positions, was not for his son in his new position.
It was gathered that the seeming banana peel may not be unconnected with the short message service (SMS) that went round the House last Thursday before Bankole eventually emerged as the Speaker.
In the SMS, members were told not to vote for Bankole, saying he was a chronic bachelor and that rather than serve Nigeria through the NYSC programme, he served the British Army.
Those against Bankole then also said he swore to an oath of allegiance to the British Government before he was enlisted into the British Army.
But a member of the Integrity Group and a close friend of the new Speaker told THISDAY last night that since Bankole was honourably discharged from the British Army, whatever allegiance he had to that country subsisted while he was in active service and not after his discharge.
On the NYSC programme, the source also said that may not be necessary since Bankole received military training and also graduated from a military academy like Sandhurst where many Nigerian senior military officers were trained.
He said what he would need was an exemption, if he chose to work in public service.
Bankole, who represents Abeokuta Federal Constituency, of Ogun State, holds a Masters Degree in military techniques from Oxford University, England and was an Oxford Officer Trainee in 1991.
He also passed selection to Sandhurst and was in the Royal Artillery Corps for a Short Service Fast Track Officers Course.
From 1995 to 1998, he was a Director of Freight Agencies and later moved to become the Executive Director of Operation at the West African Aluminium Products Limited, Ikeja, Lagos owned by his father.
The new Speaker is spending his second term in the House. He was first elected to represent his constituency in 2003 and was the former Deputy Chairman House committee on Finance.
The elder Bankole spoke with newsmen in Ibadan at a symposium organised as part of the funeral rites of late Chief Adisa Akinloye, former National Chairman of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
He noted that with his education and moral training, the new Speaker would be too conscious to avoid banana peel which had sounded the death-knell of many presiding officers in the National Assembly.
Bankole, the substituted gubernatorial candidate of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the 1983 election in Ogun State, said his son had surpassed his political achievements with his emergence as Speaker.
"My son will not be removed in the name of the Almighty God because he won't do anything to warrant that. He has got all the qualities he needs to be a good leader and to retain such an important position. I was never removed in any position I occupied in my life and I know with the support of God, his colleagues and the prayers of Nigerians, he will not be disgraced out of office,” the elder Bankole said.
The Egba traditional title holder urged Nigerians not to mistake his son’s youthfulness for weakness or soft mindedness.
He said: "My son will be 38 years of age tomorrow (today). When General Yakubu Gowon became the Head of State in Nigeria, he was 33 years and a bachelor and he had nine years of peaceful and progressive reign in this country; when Murtala Mohammed became Head of State in 1976, he was only 37 and when Olusegun Obasanjo became a military Head of State, he was 37 years. So if these former leaders did excellently well as leaders 30 years ago, and did not falter in spite of their age, then my son will perform excellently well and not falter.”
He said Dimeji would not be a stooge to anybody as he has an independent mind, "he can't be pushed around by anybody and he won't pander to the influence of powerful caucus within the ruling party."
The elder Bankole solicited for prayers from Nigerians for the lower chamber and for his son as Speaker.
On likelihood of his son’s position affecting the position of Chairman Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT) occupied by former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the same Ogun State, Bankole said he was not conversant with the arrangement for sharing offices in the ruling party.
"I do not know about the constitutional set up in PDP. I do not know whether the position in the party hierarchy, especially those of advisory capacities, will affect that of parliamentary or executive positions. I will not be in good position to comment on that,” he said.
But he said it would be diabolical to trade his son’s position considering his popular support from his colleagues for that of an advisory one within the party.
He said his son’s accomplishment was brought about by many factors which included devotion and belief in God, self discipline, forthrightness and sincerity of purpose, pointing out that with his educational upbringing, Dimeji would make the difference.
On the late Akinloye, Bankole said the deceased’s politics was devoid of bitterness and that the late politician was straight forward to a fault.
“He was a pillar to friends, reliable and a potent political actor in the First and Second Republics who never said anything against Chief Obafemi Awolowo, despite the fact that they belonged to different political parties,” he said.
The seminar put together as part of the funeral rites of Akinloye was devoid of colour as the elder Bankole and Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, former Director-General of the Nigeria Security Organisation (NSO), were the only associates of the deceased in the defunct NPN who graced the occasion.
Shinkafi lauded the contributions of the late Akinloye in politics and commended him for introducing the zoning system into Nigerian politics, which according to him, went a long way to stabilise the Second Republic.

Practical waste of one year! Better we start finding something worthwhile to do after school. If he does not have a discharge certificate so?

National Service is a very Major Issue. The Fact that NYSC is not achieving all of it's set Goals is not enough to trivialise the body.

If The speaker dodged NYSC, does not possess the discharge or exemption certificate, then he simply has to go.

End Of Story.
Re: New Speaker Dogded Nysc? by McKren(m): 3:12pm On Nov 07, 2007
I for one has always been a fan of making the NYSC a matter of choice, reason being for those who have a clear vission of where they are heading to after graduation it is a waste of 1yr. But for those who are unsure, it provides a platform for gradual and paid transition from student to labour market.

If its the talk about unifying Nigeria, that to me is gibberish and the purpose has been defeated. There is no way someone will at age over 21 begin to unlearn how to hate their compatriots if they have chosen to do so.  Besides that only a section of the population go to University and by extension NYSC, hence what it means is that those who have'nt gone to University will never have an opportunity to learn how to "love" their compatriots.

Targeting kids in Primary schools and teaching them how to "think Nigeria" will do a better job and affect a wider cross-section of the population than the NYSC scheme.

On Dimeji Bankole
Before Babasin gets excited

Some of the salient points you have to look at include:

1. You can not ask Dimeji Bankole to resign his position as speaker because of NYSC, the only criteria for being speaker is being a member of House of Reps which Dimeji Bankole is. However you can ask him to resign as an MP based on lack  of NYSC which if he does he will by extension loose his speakership.

Hence if the issue is removing Dimeji Bankole as an MP based of NYSC, it is the prerogative of INEC (not House members) to do that through the courts. INEC will also have to explain to Nigerians why such a man passed screening in the first place. Besides that Dimeji Bankole will not be singled out, INEC in doing that will have to review the credentials of all public officers and punish all those found wanting not just Dimeji (whether it is age, Nationality or asset declaration).

So the issue is not that straightforward, Dimeji Bankole can not resign as Speaker because he has not served Nigeria and remain in House of Representative.

whatever process, if he does not have NSYC certicate and no exemption. He cannot hold any public office in Nigeria!

Many of us wanted to do away with it but we warned so long you need Govt better do attend NYSC. He does not have 2 head.

I know many who study aboard, came to do NSYC and left back again.

atleast  I have 3 such teachers in high-school

Besides that only a section of the population go to University and by extension NYSC, hence what it means is that those who have'nt gone to University will never have an opportunity to learn how to "love" their compatriots

This is meant for the 'elite'; we all know problem of Nigeria is 'elite'.

Many of us that served in places away from our ethinic-people still have good friends and respect for those people.
That 1yr remains one of the memorable years.

RULE of law at all times!

NYSC SCANDAL: Speaker Keeps Quiet

The newly sworn in Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, has refused to speak on the allegation that he evaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Some unnamed members of the House had alleged that he evaded the mandatory scheme for Nigerian graduates of universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics who are not above 30 years on graduation. Only those beyond that age are exempted.

Graduates who have served in the Nigerian military or the police are also exempted.

Responding to the allegation this morning in a brief telephone interview with P.M.News, Bankole said he won’t speak on the issue for now.

“I don’t want to be distracted in my new responsibility to Nigeria,” he retorted.

He said those who are alleging that he evaded the scheme should go to the NYSC to clarify the issue.

Also speaking with P.M.News this morning on phone, Funke Egbemode, former media assistant to the speaker, said the allegation was a figment of the imagination of those peddling it.

She said detractors should avoid heating up the polity through spurious allegations against public office holders.

Egbemode also said she can confirm that Bankole participated in the scheme.

A member of the House, Hon. Sampson Osagie, who nominated Bankole as speaker before he was eventually elected, said the allegation was the handiwork of the speaker’s detractors and called on Nigerians to disregard it.

It was reported in some national dailies that the speaker would address a news conference today on the issue.

Meanwhile, the speaker’s father, Chief Alani Bankole, has started deflecting the darts being shot at his son.

Speaking in Ibadan yesterday, the senior Bankole said the ‘banana peel’ that usually brought down top political office holders was not for his son.

It has been argued in some quarters that since Bankole served in the British Army and was discharged honourably, “whatever allegiance he had to that country subsisted while he was in active service and not after his discharge.”

Some members of the House of Representatives who opposed Bankole’s emergence as speaker sent SMS (Short Message Service) on their mobile phones to other members of the House not to vote for Bankole because he evaded the NYSC scheme.

Checks at the NYSC secretariat, Abuja did not yield any result at press time.

Bankole represents Abeokuta South Federal Constituency of Ogun State in the House of Representatives.

This Funke Egbemode is a shameless political and moral prostitute. She was dead beat defending Etteh. Now she has jumped from Etteh to defending Balogun. When Balogun leaves, as I know he will soon, Funke will jump to the next ship. Na wa for Waec oh!

Bankole should provide his NYSC certificate. or show evidence.

It is that simple.

If you serve NYSC; it so easy to show evidence.

This guy smells like a big fraud.

If we cannot trust him with basic issue of NYSC certificate; how can we trust him to serve Nigerians??

Or he only want to serve Nigeria when its sweet??
Re: New Speaker Dogded Nysc? by Mamajama(m): 6:20pm On Nov 07, 2007
Its all about integrity. The law is there and must be obey. If he in did did not serve he should be remove with immediate effect. Hope can you trust someone who did not serve.

How do we know for fact all his credentials are valid. We must adhere strictly to the laws of the land.
Re: New Speaker Dogded Nysc? by Tats(m): 6:33pm On Nov 07, 2007
I am more certain than not that the guy did NYSC. I can confirm that he participated in the NYSC orientation camp with my brother in Abuja in Feb 1998, but not sure which institution/company he served in afterwards or whether he transfered to another state to complete his NYSC. My brother had mentioned him to me before and after he became a member of the House of Representatives. I think he may even have camp pictures that Dimeji featured in.

Wow now he is a big fraud? Hands up all graduates who actually served without changing the primary posting from a village to a town, and did not escape camp for the assigned duration of 2 weeks or 4 weeks as the case may be, or did not appoint someone to sign for you while you where some where else or a ghost cooper who only came for the passing out ceremony?

What's basic about NYSC ? by virtue of its design it exempts lots of Nigerian. How many people in the House went through NYSC? How many of our leader have been through this system? NYSC is not a yardstick to access ones leadership abilities nor loyalty to the nation.

Why don't we wait to hear his defence. Its a pity that this only comes out now so how did he get into the house in the first place. If you ask me he should be left to do the job for which he is best qualified.

Leave Dimeji alone if I might borrow your phrase
