Court jails six MASSOB members in Asaba…for wearing Biafra regalia

By AUSTIN OGWUDA
ASABA—SIX members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, were yesterday sentenced to prison by a chief magistrate’s court sitting in Asaba, Delta, for wearing regalia of defunct Biafra and proclaiming to be members of the group.

Sentenced to six months imprisonment on each of the three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession and proclamation to be members of MASSOB were Sunday Okoro, Ifeanyi Igbozuruike, Francis Onigbo, Sebastian Nworie, Emmanuel Nwafor and Chidi Okafor.

One of the convicted persons, Sunday Okoro, was said to have been arrested by men of Delta State police command at the Asaba end of the River Niger Head Bridge in February for being in possession of Biafra paraphernalia, including flag and chaplet.

It was reported that the next day, other members of the group from neighbouring Anambra State stormed the Asaba police station where Okoro was held in solidarity visit but that while on that visit, five of them were detained along with Okoro for also adorning Biafran regalia.

In jailing the accused persons, the Asaba Chief Magistrate court presided over by Mr. S.C. Ehikwe stated that it was the duty of the court to check the excesses of miscreants out to cause confusion in the nation.

However, counsel to the convicted members of MASSOB, Mr. W.O. Ezeanwo, said “we are not satisfied. There is no evidence that MASSOB is an illegal organization. So we are going to get the True Certified Copy, CTC, of the judgment and file our appeal in a higher court.”

Stupid judge. Nazis are still carrying their emblems all over Europe and US. One can wear whatever he wants as long as he is not commiting any crime. Asaba should be careful. Onitsha is a stone throw and half of the Asaba residents are Biafra citizens.

Massob jailed in their land?

Yet boko-haram members roam the street freely.

And they refuses to prosecute any of their members talkless of jailing them.

Oya Igbo internet warriors, where are you? Kindly explain this.

For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction. Never touch the lion's tale even when it's sleeping. They should finish with boko terrorists that goes around with army and police uniform before fueling another disaster upon them selves.

I dont hold any brief for MASSOP. But is that Nigeria's greatest problem? Our government is begging BH to negotiate but these ones are just wearing some attire and they are quickly jailed. Seems like what a bully will do. grin
Re: Court Jails Six MASSOB Members In Asaba by nkemKalu: 9:50am On May 09, 2012
This judge and the Police has no job. They are the miscreants and not the MASSOB members. What has that judge and POLICE done about BOKO HARAM and NIGER DELTA MILITANTS talkless of huge number of armed bandits and Kidnappers all over Nigeria. What about the reckless stealing and looting in government where a former governor who stole billions and was discharged and acquitted or have we forgotten the CECilia Ibru that stole N90billion and was given only Six months in jail. It then means that the six Massob members offence is equal in size with that of IBRU cos they all have to serve six months. Arrant nonesence

Re: Court Jails Six MASSOB Members In Asaba by Nobody: 12:07pm On May 09, 2012
The questions I think should have been asked from this issue are:

1. Is MASSOB a recognised organisation, known to the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria? If yes, then, wearing uniform of MASSOB is not a crime unless otherwise.
2. Is Biafra recognised in the laws of Nigeria? If no, then, any person in possession of any material, flag, currency or any other thing that propagates Biafra has committed treasonable felony and thus be treated as such.

but sombody says that NAZI Germany are still wearing their logo.
whatz the different?
Re: Court Jails Six MASSOB Members In Asaba by nairakobo1: 12:16pm On May 09, 2012
u guys comparing this issue withthat of boko haram's menace should remember that the fact that we are strugling to deal with bh does'nt mean we should overlook everly other form of crime. I'm nt a lawyer but common sense tells me that wearing a massob atire signifies rioting-attempting to bring back the civil war. Besides, i don't see you escaping imrisonment with hard labour, that is if you escape lynching by the mob if you dare put on anything supporting boko haram, so watch what you say guys.

the crux of the matter is that some guys don't even know what constitutes an offence in law. Firstly is there any law in Nigeria banning any group or persons from wearing certain code of clothings? Or has there been any law making it illegal for any one to belong to a group such as MASSOP or MOSSOP or IJAW SOLIDARITY GROUP EGBESU OR OPC. I personally think the Judge that gave that verdict should go back to Law School and start all over again.....he is simply not better than OANDOOKA of Yar'Adua fame who said Yar'Adua can rule from anywhere......hahahahaha. They are just making mockery of the Nigerian Judiciary.
