Inspired by the spirit of convergence for which Lagos remains pre-eminent, the Lagos Black Heritage Festival celebrates African creativity within a carnivalesque of traditional and contemporary Dance, Music, Painting and Photo Exposition, Drama, Design and Fashion Display, an International Symposium, Film and Video Fiesta and other artistic and intellectual offerings, both inter-state and international. In a seven-day cultural manifestation during which hundreds of performers will animate the ancient city of Badagry and cosmopolitan Lagos with a passage of the traditional and the modern.

Just a few questions here:

It's called black heritage festival, but it seems to only showcase the different cultures of nigeria. shouldn't it have been named appropriately so? ie: nigerian heritage festival

why is it that the only thing we do is dress-up and dance? that's just a very tiny part of culture, but it seems it's the only thing we have to offer. where are the value systems, the social structure, political systems, the foods, languages, art & folk lores, history, artifacts, etc. these all need to be documented & presented. what's so special about dancing? even animals dance nah.., we have to demonstrate that we are at least higher, don't you think?

i really don't yet see any serious works/documentaries that are original & homemade. it seems, the best stories i know about our heritage are works done by the bbc & other foreign bodies. Do we really think we deserve respect from anybody at all when we can't even do a simple thing as tell our own stories? seriously smh..

You have a point the title of the festival doesn't connect to the celebration but I am suspecting they mean african history or Nigerian history not the Legite "Black history" that african american and black Caribbeans celebrate. They need to change the title to Nigerian history festival

Should have been renamed 'African history' celebration.

The reason it's important to celebrate African history is due to the fact that the Arabian fundamentalist and Eurocentrics used to claim that there was no such thing as African history, furthermore, all the present day discourse on history by Arabian fundamentalist and Eurocentric has a systematic bias when it comes to the role of the African in world history.

The starting point for every intellectual conversation regarding history will stipulate the fact that humanity begins in Africa.

If humanity begins in Africa, then how is it that such has been ommitted from the current curriculum that teaches us history?

Here is proof that the current intellectual discourse has a systematic biased to the role of thr African in world history.
