Robbers Take Over SW... Attack Police Station, Hijack Speakers Car, Bomb Bank by MrGlobe(m): 2:33pm On May 26, 2012
It seems the SE governors has finally succeeded in sending armed robbers in the zone back to their states of origin because the reports we are getting from the SW is not something to write home about. Perhaps, Maybe agberoshola will help in using the youths he sent for military training in Cuba to forestall the insecurity in the region. It also seems the boys are getting restless/angry over the extent of looting that leader TinubuTinubu has plaqued the region with. Anyway.......

ARMED robbers literally held parts of the country by the jugular on Thursday and yesterday.

They wreaked havocs in Ekiti, Ogun and Kwara states where they fire-bombed a bank, killed Policemen as well as passersby and snatched the official vehicle of the Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi.

In Anambra State, however, an end came to the reign of terror by four suspected robbers as they were reportedly killed after a gun duel with Police officers.

It was a bloody on Thursday afternoon in Ilasa-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State as dare devil robbers stormed a branch of the First Bank Plc in the town, killing seven persons, including three policemen.

In Ilorin, Kwara State, three suspected robbers were arrested minutes after they had reportedly killed a business man who had withdrawn an unconfirmed sum from a bank
According to eyewitnesses, the robbers in Ekiti, numbering eight, launched coordinated attacks on the bank and a Police station located near it.

The incident took place a few minutes after the state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, passed through the town to neighbouring Omuo-Ekiti town, to launch the second phase of his administration’s social security scheme for the aged.

It was gathered that some members of the gang placed themselves strategically near the bank and the police station. Those at the Police station were the first to shoot at the few policemen on duty. The bandits, said to brandish assorted rifles, shot sporadically for more than 40 minutes.

Two policemen were killed instantly, while the third, on duty at the bank, was also shot dead by the other members of the gang.

In a manner similar to that of those who raided the branch of the bank in Ado-Ekiti about a year ago, the hoodlums demolished the security door of the bank with dynamite before gaining entry into the banking hall.

The hoodlums shot sporadically into the air to scare away residents, most of whom ran into the bush for safety.

An unidentified number of the residents sustained various degrees of injuries.

The other four persons that were killed were identified as indigenes of the town and neighbouring Omuo-Ekiti, the headquarters of the Local Government.

The town, which is renowned for high production of yam in the state, became a shadow of itself, as commercial activities were immediately paralysed due to the ugly incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Police Command, Alhaji Ibrahim Maishanu and the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, yesterday visited the town for personal assessment of the incident.

Other branches of the bank in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, did not open for business yesterday.

Also on Thursday in Ilorin, a middle-aged man was shot dead by armed robbers moments after he had withdrawn money from a first generation bank. Unconfirmed reports put the withdrawn sum at N1.2 million.

The incident threw traders at the popular Midland/Post-Office area into panic as they witnessed how the robbers, said to have been operating in a taxi cab, shot sporadically into the air to scare away possible help for their victim.

According to eyewitnesses, the man had gone to withdraw money from the bank, located on the popular Unity Road but decided to take the Obbo Road back on a commercial motorcycle not knowing that his attackers were already waiting in a taxi outside the bank.

It was the first shot from the robbers that indicated to him that there was danger and made him to ask the motorcyclist to increase his speed in the densely populated street.

The robbers were said to have pursued him to the junction of the Obbo Road/Midland area where they fired another shot at him and also shot into the air.

The man, according to eyewitness accounts, jumped down from the motorcycle and fled towards the Post Office area but collapsed in front of a popular filling station near the railway intersection where people immediately came to his aid and rushed him to the hospital.

By that time, the robbers had escaped in their taxi and, as would be revealed later, headed for another bank to wait for another victim.

According to sources, the robbers went to another bank not far away from the first one where they also attempted to attack another victim but luck ran out on them as security operative swooped on them and nabbed the three of them.

The spokesman for the state’s Police command, Mr. Dabo Ezekiel, confirmed the incident and said that a pistol was recovered from the robbers. The name of the deceased was given as Taiwo Badero, a businessman dealing in frozen fish at the Ojatuntun (New Market) area of Ilorin.

He is survived by his mother, a wife and six children.

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Adekunbi, on Thursday night had a raw deal in the hands of daredevil armed robbers in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The official Toyota Avensis car of the Speaker was snatched by the robbers at gunpoint.

The ash vehicle, marked Ogun AYE 86 AA, was said to have been snatched along Abiola Way, Abeokuta by a gang of bandits.

The Nigerian Compass on Saturday learnt that the incident occurred about 7:00pm on Thursday.

According to impeccable sources, the Speaker was driving the car while his security aide sat beside him when the armed robbers waylaid his vehicle.

Apparently unaware of the status of their victim, the robbers held Adekunbi hostage after ordering him and his aide to move to the vehicle’s back seat.

They subsequently drove the car out of Abeokuta and freed their victims at the Kobape area, along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway, which is about 20 minutes drive from the state capital.

“It was shocking to all of us when we heard the incident but thank God, the Speaker was not hurt in the robbery operation. Otherwise, we could have been saying another thing,” a source told the Nigerian Compass on Saturday.

The incident, it was learnt, has already been reported to the police, who were said to have begun moves to track down the stolen vehicle.

As at press time yesterday, the incident was still being kept secret.

Some aides of the Speaker and government functionaries, upon inquiry by reporters, maintained sealed lips over the snatching of the state’s number three man’s car.

When contacted, the speaker’s Special Assistant (Media), Waheed Akinola, denied knowledge of the incident, saying: ‘I don’t think that can happen.”

Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police command was not aware of the robbery.

It was a black Friday for four suspected armed robbers who had been terrorising Onitsha and its environs inAnambra State, when they were allegedly yesterday shot dead during a bloody clash with the police in Onitsha during their bid to rob a man of over N30 million.

The Nigerian Compass on Saturday learnt that the suspected robbers had laid siege to a thick forest in the Omelumgbome area of Delta State where they wanted to rob the man who usually goes there to pay the labourers laying network pipes for a telecommunications company.

But, acting on a tip-off, the Special Inspector General of Police (IGP) Task Force on Heinous Crimes, Zone C, attached to the Central Police Station, (CPS), Onitsha swung into action which led to the killing of the four suspcted armed robbers while others fled.

According to the source, the crack team of Police officers led by the Commander of the task force, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) immediately mobilized to the scene where they laid ambush and killed the robbers.

“The policemen had gone there at around 8.30 pm following a tip off that the dare devil armed robbery gang was planning to launch a bloody attack on the man. They parked their vehicle a pole away from the bush and trekked to where they lay ambush for the robbers until they arrived, a source said.

The robbery suspects were said to have opened fire first. The Police responded in kind. which eventually led to serious gun duel between the robbers and the special task force, during which the four suspects were said to have been killed.

The source also said that during the gun duel, the suspected kingpin of the gang fled with a Mercedes Benz 190, believed to have been used to ferry arms.

It was also gathered that one of the robbery suspects, Chinedu Okoye, from Aguleri Otu of Anambra State who had been on the wanted list of the Police, confessed before he died that it was their gang that killed the Officer In-Charge of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, (SARS), (CPS), Onitsha, (DSP) Emmanuel Ochiobi on Monday this week.

Items recovered from the robbers included, two AK 47 riffle magazines with 30 live ammunition, one fabricated LAR rifle empty Magazine, even though the armourer swiftly drove off with their riffles and other weapons during the exchange of gun battle.

Meanwhile, the police said they had launched aggressive manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang and would soon arrest them to face trial for all crimes they had committed in the states.

When contacted the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, said that he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

Armed robbers!

What is the way out of this mess? Because robberies and other crimes will be increasing because of people's bad economic situation.

According to sources, the robbers went to another bank not far away from the first one where they also attempted to attack another victim but luck ran out on them as security operative swooped on them and nabbed the three of them.

Even the robbers went back to another bank to rob, this is scary.

The police lack adequate communication during intense situations.
If they could co-ordinate themselves during such attacks one more armed robber wont escape.
