MAU/UNILAG Today's Protest Report! by dani1luv: 5:00pm On Jun 01, 2012
Good day, I assume you know to which station you are tuned in to, who I am, what part of my name is silent and why we are here, so let’s continue.

Rumor had it that the students of UNILAG have accepted their fate and have decided to stop protesting but incidents that happened today prove this theory wrong. There were no protests yesterday due to the lying-in-state of the former VC at the sports centre of the school, the ceremony was grand and was befitting of the great man.

The case today was a different story, mayhem ensued everywhere along university road as there was a clash between university students and policemen.

By 7am today it all seemed there were going to be no protests as cars were plying the road and no students were seen gathering, it all broke loose when a Rapid Response Squad armor tank decided to carry its big head and park in front of the school gate, who sent it and what it was looking for there is what we don’t understand

On sighting this tank a certain activist student from the faculty of education took it upon himself to gather other volatile students like himself from all the hostels and together they accosted the tank and then started chanting ‘go away’ ‘go away’ . Soon other students gathered and succeeded in convincing the driver to take his tank as far as abule oja bus stop.

Shortly after, minivans containing several police officers arrived and then there was a bit of rancor between the two factions, police and student. Everything seemed to be dying down and a dialogue seemed to be ensuing until two bullets were shot into the air, and as expected there was huge brouhaha, everywhere was in a state of anomie .

Every single student ran into the school premises and those who couldn’t make it went towards st finbarrs road, about 3 canisters of tear gas were shot into the school making the students retreat further inside. This caused anger amongst the students and they in turn picked up weapons like poles and bottles to face the police men. More canisters were thrown and students were further angered . Handkerchiefs soaked in kerosene were donned by the students who were prepared for war.

Apparently the policemen didn’t bring enough canisters so immediately they stopped shooting the students rushed out and attempted to push the policemen towards abule oja bus stop. Soon there was reasonable calmness as a certain police chief ordered all policemen to remove the bullet cartridges from their guns, now they had only mouth.

Soon the students divided themselves into two groups , those protesting at abule oja and those partying to songs playing at the gate, soon there was peace and everywhere was calm. Partying and soccer playing continued at the school gate and the policemen sat restlessly in their vans at abule oja bus stop .

No deaths occurred but 3 were injured during the riot .

PS during all this GEJ was rumored to be at Victoria Island

Thanks for tuning in, BYE !
