Oh men... The hills are gonna erupt in conflagrations because the birds are old. I have already bought some mules, donkeys and horses to start my transport business.

Kabo and Chanchangi 'planes' are not even fit to be parked in an airport.
Something should be done about the other old airplanes, too. The government should quit setting up panels to tell us what we already know! What a ruderless country!

I hope the Directorate of Airworthiness Standards, (DAWS), of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) did not adjudge the aircraft fit for flight. Incompetence and nonchalance that cost lives should be severely dealt with!

Its not just about the physical age of the plane but the number of cycles it has had. Each time a plane flies it gets pressurised and depressurised at the end of the flight, this process brings about metal fatigue. As such a plane that has flown frequently in less time is more aged than one which although older but has flown as much flights as the former.

At the end of the day its all about maintenance, for example here are the age of some British airways planes:

A plane is a machine. Like your cars, if the recommended preventive maintenances are done as at and when due, it can serve for a very long time. We should also note that planes are upgraded from time to time and as new technologies are invented, some are incorporated into the old machines. The problem with a typical Nigerian organization is maintenance. It is the culture we lack and has been the major factor responsible for the collapse of most machine establishments. If we do our research, you will find out that even British Airways has aircrafts in their fleet that may be over 40 years. So, let us face reality here. The monitoring agencies must ensure that maintenances are carried out according to OEM recommendations. ABS, Lloyds, DNV, BV etc does this for ships and if they fall short of these recommendations, the ship's class is withdrawn. I am sure there are things like that with aircrafts.

The cost of doing business in nigeria is crazy! Most of these airline barely pay their staffs..... An aircraft that is 20 years and above is bound to suffer what we call "plane fatigue" at a certain point!! And some of the earliest signs of plane fatigue are creeking sound, mild plunging and many more......... The solution to this precarious situation might sound far fetched but its the absolute truth.
1- power supply
2- functiona refiniries.
I don't really wanna go into details but I've done my homeworks.

New planes are expensive and airlines are not charities so expect to pay more if you want newer planes and this is no guarantee that the planes are accident free. I always say that planes are not like cars that you can park on a layby and call out the mechanic or recovery vehicle; if there's a problem, better pray that it is one that your pilot is skilled enough to handle and that your time on earth is not up.

Having said that, it is true that the average nija does not understand the importance of maintaining things. Proper regulation and policing of industries is practically non exisistent in nigeria( we would rather plant flowers and open new supermarkets!). Does anyone remember Nigeria airways flight 2120, in 1991, involving people returning from mecca? I'm sorry to bring this up but the accident occured when under-inflated tires burst and caught fire during take off. When the wheels were pulled up, the fire spread to the cargo hold and other parts of the plane. Tragically, on 2 separate occassions, attempts were made to inflate the tyres but each time it wasn't done because 'it would cause delays'... so next time your flight is delayed, don't harras the staff, instead pray that essential maintenance has been properly carried out.

If you've got time on your hands, check out Alsaska airline flight 261;reason for crash- inadequate maintenence leading to wear and tear and failure of the horizontal stabilizer control system. This is the airline that sold their planes to Dana. It is possible that the planes had existing faults which would have got worse over time and finally resulted in the Dana crash..., some faults don't immediately result in a crash (china airline flight 611- the crash happened 22 years after the poor maintenance was done)

Most plane crashes are avoidable and only occur because of poor maintenance.

Emphasis shouldn't b on age alone but also on maintainance. till the result of the NTSB investigation, nothing is conclusive. at least we saw a brand new plane on its second demonstration flight crash in indonesia May 9th 2012 killing all 47 people in board made up of aviation journalists and potential buyers. a brand new jet is niether old nor does it need major maintainance/checks

Way to go. That's affirmitive action. If the government wont act the people will vote with their feet. I have told friends and family no MD series. No DC series. No 727. No 737 less than 300 series. These planes are too old, too problematic and too costly to maintain so I don't think our greedy businessmen will maintain them.

arent you guys a lil trigger happy ? hundreds of planes fly everyday in nigeria and have been for over 30 years. lets do the math based on a 30 year period. that comes to about 1 million plus flights. out of 1 million plus flights, you get 2 crashes and all of a sudden naija planes are crap ? . dont get me wrong now, those are 2 accidents too many but still, PERSPECTIVE. and rest in peace to the people who passed. they are Definitely at rest ECCLESIASTES 12 VS 7

Please that is a big lie, when planes land, they are not turned off like cars. The engines continue running loudly though not as loud as before taxing. I've used both internal and external propeller and none was turned off.

Pally it is not maybe. It is certain those faults on the Alaskan airplanes sold to DANA were never repaired. When I saw pictures of the mangled tail section with the flaps up I knew the plane had stalled and crashed.

The pilot must have lost hydraulic pressure as he began to deploy his control surfaces on approach and air pressure forced the flaps into that position where they locked due to the MD 83's notorious valve assembly and since the plane was slowing for landing there was insufficient lift to maintain flight.

Bad aircraft, badder airline management.

But on a lighter note. Why does plane crash make so much newz in Nigeria?

10X the number of plane crash victims die on our roadsdeath traps every yr. Yet it hardly make the newz. The Prezident sheddin hiz crocodile tearz at the site of the plane crash iz the height of hypocrisy that I've ever witnessed in this country. While hiz subjects diez like houzefly on our roadz that are worse than that of war-torn countries.

Methinks that plane crash makez the headline because it affects mostly the top 1% of Nigerianz. Vast majority of Nigerianz can't afford to fly.
Futhermore, dy r calling 4 fire serv. statn @ evry LG. Dts gd bt I pray 9ja gov maintain dm well. Dy shld nt 4gt 2 build more acc victim clinics 4 9ja xpress rds.

Onyocha:

i beg to differ!

if a plane has being in use for 20 years, then that plane has really worked.even if the plane is 20 years old and rarely flying,i think you still need good maintenance.but yet still, for how long do you expect a plane to be used?until it crashes?

it is like in nigeria companies do not ground their planes, until the planes get too tired to fly and kill people.very sad reality!!!

so please do not try to cover up on age.it is not like new planes do not crash.but there is higher risk of older planes after reaching a certain age to crash.

It's okay to disagree, actually it's very healthy. What is not okay is your accusation of "trying to cover up on age". I have no dog in the fight. I know better than to fly on ANY local Nigerian Airline. Not because the planes are bad but that there is no maintenance.

The hardest working aircrafts are the USA space shuttles, they are definetely much older and flew millions of miles more than 5N-AM (yes we lost two).

World airlines fly aircrafts that are well serviced and not all are brand new. This mentality of newer must be better is laughable with people on the ground.

If we use your kindergatten frame of thought, then all the Indians need to do is buy shiny new Boeings and never service them and they would be thought safer.

The best aircraft is a well serviced one, following stricy manufacturers reccomendations, not the newest one. That is if you're thinking of safety and not fuel economy or noise pollution.

You fly an aircraft until it becomes unsafe or it becomes uneconomically feasible (cost of maintenance, fuel, crew, etc). Not some arbitrary silly age thing.

Thank you, most eloquently stated.

That being said, I think the MD-83 has inherent issues (and specifically this particular bird).

blink182: Please that is a big lie, when planes land, they are not turned off like cars. The engines continue running loudly though not as loud as before taxing. I've used both internal and external propeller and none was turned off.

Not always.

Some airlines requrie the flight crew to shut off one or many engines as aplicabel to save fuel once they get on the taxiway.

Some airlines also require that they start the other engines only after they have started taxing.

In any case the engines are turned off the instant that they reach the gates lest they ingest trash from the gate area.

The Nigerian law does not stop 20 years old planes from flying, they are only banned from being bought, just like that of cars. In other word you can use your plane even if it is 100 years old if it is already registered in Nigeria but cannot register tokunbo plane older than 20 years.

Though maintenance and good pilot are what matters not newness

A professional Heli Pilot in the air and in the area heared the Dana Captain declare an emergency for loosing both engines.

After a jet engine flame out, usually you'll loose haydraulic power (I don't think they have enough time to go through the checklist and reach deploying any backup power if available - remember that they were on final approach). So who knows why the flaps are in the way they were pictured.

The CVR and FDR will have a story to tell, hopefully the area boys have not carted it off for souvenir.

This is bullshit. You can't judge a plane just with one criterion alone. Age is meaningless when the plane has low nautical miles covered. The more important criterion should be nautical miles and not age.

Same thing with cars. I have a car that's 4 yrs old with just 25,000 km since I barely use it and it's still new. Can you compare it with a similar car that's 1 yr old but have 150,000 km?

Kai, when my cousin who flew for the first time ever told me that he'd never fly again even if paid to do so,i thought he was kidding o,he said the plane was just shaking and he prayed throughout the flight,he said he'd concluded that was the day he'd die,now i get why he said so.

It took enough talking to from many people before he accepted to fly again and he said it must be an international flight before he'll be seen inside a plane again.

Ofcourse he flew chanchangi.

KABO AIR CRASH HISTORY:
Kabo Air has had the following incidents and accidents since commencing operations:
On 6 August 1986, a Sud Aviation SE-210 Caravelle III overran the runway at Calabar Airport, Nigeria. All passengers and crew survived but the aircraft was written off.[6]
On 16 September 1991, a BAC 1-11 landed at Port Harcourt Airport, Nigeria without lowering its gear. All passengers and crew survived but the aircraft was written off.[7]
In 1992, a 707 made an emergency landing in Istres_Air_Base#Incidents following a fire caused by overloading.
On 23 August 1992, a BAC 1-11 overran the runway at Sokoto Airport, Nigeria. None of the 53 passengers and 4 crew were killed but the aircraft was written off.[8]
On 12 January 2010, a parked Kabo Air Boeing 747 and taxiing Middle East Airlines Airbus A330 collided on the ground at Kano International Airport, Nigeria; none of the passengers or crew were injured. The Boeing 747's left wing and main fuel tank were badly damaged and the right wing of the Airbus A330 was damaged. Officials believe the accident could have been avoided if there was more ground lighting to help the pilots of the Airbus A330 to see.[9]

Arik Air Crash History:
On 31 March 2010, a parked Boeing 737-700 boarding for a flight from Calabar to Abuja was evacuated immediately after an Audi car crashed into it from behind. The driver, who claimed to be Jesus Christ, was arrested and declared that he had made the desperate move to save the aircraft from an impending crash.[17]
