What we fail to understand is the fact that when the dust settles as regards the whole nigeria aviation brouhaha we forget and go back to our normal way of life forgetting there is a time bomb waiting to explode, only for it to go off and we start the whole blame game all over again. Do you only drive brand new cars? And do you understand that in fact, with proper maintenance, servicing and inspection the planes would be in a good condition? There is a speculation that the engines had a problem. If that were true, would you expect the entire aircraft to be discarded because he engines have a problem? Would you discard a car because its engine or tires had a problem? |

muffins99: New planes are expensive and airlines are not charities so expect to pay more if you want newer planes and this is no guarantee that the planes are accident free. I always say that planes are not like cars that you can park on a layby and call out the mechanic or recovery vehicle; if there's a problem, better pray that it is one that your pilot is skilled enough to handle and that your time on earth is not up.
Having said that, it is true that the average nija does not understand the importance of maintaining things. Proper regulation and policing of industries is practically non exisistent in nigeria( we would rather plant flowers and open new supermarkets!). Does anyone remember Nigeria airways flight 2120, in 1991, involving people returning from mecca? I'm sorry to bring this up but the accident occured when under-inflated tires burst and caught fire during take off. When the wheels were pulled up, the fire spread to the cargo hold and other parts of the plane. Tragically, on 2 separate occassions,attempts were made to inflate the tyres but each time it wasn't done because 'it would cause delays'... so next time your flight is delayed, don't harras the staff, instead pray that essential maintenance has been properly carried out.
If you've got time on your hands, check out Alsaska airline flight 261;reason for crash- inadequate maintenence leading to wear and tear and failure of the horizontal stabilizer control system. This is the airline that sold their planes to Dana. It is possible that the planes had existing faults which would have got worse over time and finally resulted in the Dana crash..., some faults don't immediately result in a crash (china airline flight 611- the crash happened 22 years after the poor maintenance was done)
Most plane crashes are avoidable and only occur because of poor maintenance.
I doubt if someone like you have bought a brand new car before, you will know the difference between brand new and tokunbo. What stops an airline from buying 3 brand new air planes instead of using same net amount to buy 10 tokunbo planes. May you not die in air crash, Amen. |

If you like, buy brand new spanking planes for all of them and they'll still contrive to run them down to death traps in a short time. It's the same thing with cars. Some people buy sweet brand new cars, and after a year, you'll weep when you see how badly the car has been maintained. Meanwhile, a twenty year old well maintained car will be busy racking up the miles. Heck, in Europe and USA there are lots of 100 year old cars that are well maintained and still road worthy! Mine is all the airlines that are noncompliant with the avaition requirements must have their licence revoked. From the look of things only Arik and air Nigeria look compliant but still need to meet other minimum standards such as C and D check compliance on all aircrafts. If this can be done in many countries outside Nigeria and produce results as we see in South Africa and ethiopia for example. Isn't it time we take the lives and rendering of quality services to avaition industry clientelle. This is a highly professional fields and just any money bag cannot just feel they can come in at will. Chanshangi is not an airline as virtually all its planes are out dated if you will expired and yet nothing is done to withhold their license until they are compliant. What a shame corruption has brought into our society. In an real country chanshangi will never see the light of the day not to talk of even launch operations. I can guarantee you that if nothing is done soon we are yet to see the end of needless crashes in the avaition industry. |
