HAH: The Nigerian law does not stop 20 years old planes from flying, they are only banned from being bought, just like that of cars. In other word you can use your plane even if it is 100 years old if it is already registered in Nigeria but cannot register tokunbo plane older than 20 years.
Though maintenance and good pilot are what matters not newness

After this crash, there's been so much malicious information passed by some of us who know nothing about the aviation industry. We have to be careful about blasphemy. However, I listened to experts and there is no proven correlation between a plane's age and air crashes but for MAINTENANCE. It's however noted that older planes need more maintenance than newer ones.
Secondly, the representative from FAAN & NCAA confirmed that the age limit is 22 years in Nigeria. |

I was approached by a Chanchagi official to buy a ticket for their flight to Lagos (at a much reduced cost compared to Aero-Contractor tickets), I approached the tarmac and took a look at the Air-craft and told the offficial,'No thank you, I will wait for the Aero-contractor flight to return from Lagos'. It is better to be late than to be the late son-of-man.  |

You see what I have been suspecting? My suspicion is correct. Those planes are damn too old to be in the Nigerian airspace.
When I saw the President weeping at the scene of incident, I was provoked by his action. Crying when things which he has the authority to right, to me, is Nollywood act. I expect the President to swing into ACTION, summon all concerned in the aviation industry and discipline them accordingly.
Once again, I feel disappointed in the leadership of this country, with GEJ having the lion share of the blame. As the chief administrator of Nigeria, his role is to ensure that all ministries function effectively, failure which the minister of such ministry should be dealt with. Sadly, the ministers are more interested in the kickbacks from operators and are only looking to awarding fake and overbloated contracts. And sadly upon sadly too, GEJ has no gut to deal with any one but to ask Nigerians to pray for things to normalise.
I am really disappointed with the leadership style of GEJ. The situation in Nigeria now calls for decisive actions, even if it means being AUTHORITARIAN.
Nigeria is too blessed to be in this mess. GEJ, please do something. |

they take the lead becos ODILI and Obj used most of the 16billion dollar ipp power projects to buy those plane brand new. check the years they were bought and when those money went missing Very on point. some valid points have been made but the major issues adversely affecting the airlines should be addressed by the government authorities. Greatest challenges faced by the airlines are caused by financial pressure. Government agencies are all feeding off the airlines. Import duties are choking. The civil aviation authorities take a slice, the federal aviuation authorities take their cut, internal revenue service take their piece. After deductions there is hardly anything left. This financial pressure forces some to cut corners. The onus is on government to address theses issues.This is beside the alleged 'bribes' they have to part with. These obligatory payments cost hundreds of millions of dollars annually. If these issues are not addressed, anything they do (or claim they are doing) will only be a short term solution. If they kill the aviation sector, the impact on the economy will be enormous. |

That's idiocy at it's highest. Same issue with ageing out good vehicles from being imported.
An aircraft is a piece of machinery, and it can last for a very long time as long as it's properly serviced and not overstressed, meaning being used withing it's desigend parameters.
The Dana air crash was a bomb waiting to explode (search the web for it's previous issues with Alaska Airlines).
What the government needs to do is set up a real (not jeko jeko) airline safety board. Pay the members/staff well so they don't resort to bribes, etc and hold them accountable to safety standards.
Don't let us throw out the bath water with the baby in it.
PS: Dana Air Chairman should do the honorary thing that Japanese people do, have him swallow a sword.
PPS: There should be daily train departured from Lagos to Abuja on a world class train service. We as a nation, looking at the decrepit state of infrastructure are not ready to take flight just yet. Piyke: Its not just about the physical age of the plane but the number of cycles it has had. Each time a plane flies it gets pressurised and depressurised at the end of the flight, this process brings about metal fatigue. As such a plane that has flown frequently in less time is more aged than one which although older but has flown as much flights as the former.

If a millionaire seek to buy a private jet that's over 50 years then that his f**king business but to use it for transportation shows no regards for people. 10X the number of plane crash victims die on our roadsdeath traps every yr. Yet it hardly make the newz. The Prezident sheddin hiz crocodile tearz at the site of the plane crash iz the height of hypocrisy that I've ever witnessed in this country. While hiz subjects diez like houzefly on our roadz that are worse than that of war-torn countries.
Methinks that plane crash makez the headline because it affects mostly the top 1% of Nigerianz. Vast majority of Nigerianz can't afford to fly. av asked pple dis same question yet no good reply |

This is why l get sick of Nigerians, when l was back home, l lived a frustrated live because of the hypocritical life l see. I posted something here yesterday, but it's been hidden or removed. You Nigerians hate truth. Though we live in the U.S, but you corrupt lifestyle still alarm us here, l live in the same city in Texas as two of the victims and we are all mourning. l will post what's on my fb profile again, you guys can remove it, but it's my last time posting on Nairaland.
I mourn not only for the fact that families have lost loved ones in the Lagos plane crash, but also for the sad future, that things like this mishap will continue in land, sea and air until the value for human life is respected and the culture of corruption, greed and selfishness, from those in highest levels of power to the lowliest on the streets in Nigeria is reversed and forgotten in her history. |
