AjanleKoko: My dad, essentially.
I didn't really know anything about what people studied in university. In fact, I wanted to study physics or mathematics at the university. But My dad basically sat me down and said 'look, the smartest kids study electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering. Period'. That was it.
Ended up as an electrical engineer. But I wish I had studied math or physics.

Why would you wish to have studied physics or math? Isn't engineering an encompassing field, in that you take a lot of physics and mathematics classes? Though not advanced classes if you were to major in physics or math, but at least when you are an engineering graduate, you are pretty confident that you know the fundamentals of math and physics. Just out of curiosity, What is your take on this?

Damojo: Mine is quite different. Studied pharmacy cos I wanted to be in the Medical field and couldn't stand the sight of blood (so I couldn't study Medicine). Parents have been supportive cos when I even switched to banking and now to Oil n Gas, they remained happy. It's not abt wot u studied in school but how vibrant u r to be able to blend in in2 any field. wink

It's quite interesting and inspiring seeing you guys drop your various experinces.
From time i never actually had i particular field i wanted to specialise in,this was a given because i was an all round and very adaptable student. In JSS 3 however, i experienced a sharp turn around and began to dislike maths and anything else that dealt with figures (physics for example). Mind you,i wasn't incapable of doing well in those subjects, they just weren't in my comfort zone. I developed a strong love for theory based science subjects and so went to science class and was VERY good in chemistry and biology. Eventually, when i had to apply for higher studies i applied to the Petroleum Training Institute Warri (on my dad's suggestion) to study Petroleum Engineering and Uniport to study Chemical Engineering. Today, i have my ND in Petroleum Engineering and God Knows i thoroughly enjoyed it while in school (excepting of course all those crazy mechanical courses and anything that had to do with Maths).
My dad influenced my decision

Actually no one becomes an engineer till they write and pass their COREN (Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria) exams. Two be admitted to write the professional exam, you must have completed HND or B.Sc in an Engineering course and have at least4 yrs post school work experience. I av completed an engineering course. But I haven't written COREN so I dnt call myself engineer. Infact I dnt write it in front of my name. So to those that are arguing abt whether they're engineers or not, av u written COREN? And to those pple without atleast HND in an engineering field calling themselves engineers on construction sites pls stop deceiving yourselves. Engineering is both practical and theoretical and the two are inter woven. It is the theory that is practiced. And finally, to settle your argument. Geological engineering is not a new field. Geologist and Geological engineers. are quite different. A geologist studies science of geology and a geological engineer studies engineering properties, mechanics and application of rock materials etc. A geologist can't write COREN and can never be an engineer but a geological engineer which is usually a specialisation of Civil Engineering at M.Sc level can write COREN and hence can be called an Engineer in Nigeria. In conclusion, the defining factor of the use of the title Engr. XYZ is whether you've have passed your COREN exams or not. QED.

Of course.
But I still choose to call myself an Engineer here.
Do u want me to use Mr.
LOL!
Its not easy being an Engineer jare!

Jarus: how far my classmate? Did you see Expy recently.

Well, with 4 years experience in accounting, I'm very comfortable with it, plus my specialization(taxation) is interesting.

But nothing like being an economist, dropping economic policies a la Soludo, Sanusi and throwing the whole country into debate. It's fun. Lol

What people fail to understand is engineers can work as accountant and in other art fields because we have solid math background than art graduates...accountants, economists; though economics is very indepth. All we need is a little brush up in accounting principles and we will be doing pretty well.

A notable engineer who was a great banker was former CEO of BANK PHB, Francis Atuche. He has a degree in petroleum engineering with first class honors. And they are many engineering graduates I know that are Bank managers...

A plethora of reasons:
1. I'd have preferred to spend 4 years in school, as opposed to 5.
2. I'd have preferred NOT to have a masters degree in electrical engineering. My decision to do the postgraduate was borne out of uncertainty. We graduated, and nobody really knew what was coming next, so I opted to do a masters degree.
3. I'd have preferred to pursue a career in finance or actuarial science instead of a career in engineering. Engineering is boring. If I had studied math or physics, I wouldn't have felt 'tied' to an engineering career. Engineers in Nigeria are all trying to get jobs in oil companies. That's ridiculous.

I get your point. Its pretty hard finding a job in Nigeria today. All engineers want to get the big buck, however if you look at the engineering industry in Nigeria, the oil and gas companies are the biggest employers, and pay more also. Nigeria manufactures nothing except produce oil. If we had manufacturing companies as does U.S and other industrialized countries, I would assume engineers will be looking into other engineering market as opposed to oil and gas.

Yes my brother. I have to confess, the second reason why I chose to become an engineer was to get the title "Engr." Growing up I knew at the back of my mind that there were only five professions with titles: Dr, Engr, Arch,Clergy and Military. I chose engineering. I love it and I will not trade it for any thing. The title separates you from boyssmiley

I knew a guy who was mistakenly addressed as "Mr." This guy went ballistic until the correction was made and addressed properly as "Engr." Hahaha!

Economics has undoubtedly moved be young behavioral to an enviable height of Managerial cutting across all sectors of the economy, bringing to pass the desired result by generating policies required to effect positive change in an Organizational set up, This I intend to uphold as my Objective. With is understanding as a younger economist from secondary school, Imo State university finished the call..and today I can tell that am a happy economist.

My choice of course was determined by the choice of University.
My ambition was to study Architecture in OAU but, couldn‘t go to a far distance due to the death of my sister-in-law in 2005 after she left a new born baby (also died last year) for my aging mother to raise. I had to forgone my architecture in OAU and help her in raising the boy.
I had to settle for Quantity Surveying in the nearby UNILAG since I didn‘t do neither Technical Drawing nor Fine Art that is required for Architecture in UNILAG in my WASSCE. Second year into the programme and I‘m hopeful of a brighter future.
