@ Dc Trendy, the new policy affects intending student for 2012/2013 session. Those already admitted into the programe must graduate. In other words, there will be no more part-time after 2016. Except were the programe is reversed.

The part time program was only suspended and not cancelled, this is a welcomed development in my opinion, cus the way part time programs are being run now is impacting any thing but knowledge. part time programs have become a medium for corrupt lecturers and V.Cs to enrich themselves... and not just that, the program is really being abused as the purpose for which it was set up is no longer being achieved... where i school for example, the part time program that used to be for working class persons between the age say 25 and above, has now become a program of little children from age 16- 21 who could not pass jamb. Admission into part time should require some form of screening ( examination ) and a lot of adjustment and standards have to be put in place for this program to achieve the desired impact.

saintini: Why make a big deal about part-time programmes in Nigeria. In climes like the United States, lots of people work and school-That's essentially part-time.
All the NUC and perhaps the ministry of education should do is set the rules, the standards, the controls over every institution that runs part time programmes. Ensuring that the teeming youths in Nigeria gets adequate quality education is key. Yes, there may be specialised courses like medicine that need full residence in the college, however many other courses can be very well studied fulltime, part time, online etc.
For examples, there are qualified accountants today, who have no first degrees but got chartered by rigorous personal studies.
The Govt should do every thing possible to ensure that every nigerian youth who desires tetiary education can acquire same.

you've got it spot on! Methinks these guyz @ NUC are just a bunch of lazy folks who can't brainstorm the necessary standards they ought to put in place for the institutions. Their action's like throwing away the baby with the bathwater...

I heard this news last month. This is not just cool. Even in America, the part time program is still in existence were people do part time work and still go to school.
If Nigeria is really looking up to America, then they should review this.

One of Nigeria's problem is that we are rushing our development, and this brings alot of rubbish along

It shows how ignorant the people in Government are. First of all, the Minister of State for Education did part time law in RSUST after he graduated from the College of Education in Rivers state. What was his input. I still wonder.
People must know that the problem of education in Nigeria is not part time programmes but actually problem of foundation. Look at the products of our primary and secondary schools today and the crop of graduates, you will see that disconnect or gap that clearly shows that they had a poor foundation. I think what they should have done is to regularize the part time programmes and purnish erring institutions.
Most of them are even doing PART TIME ONLINE degree programmes of foreign universities and none of these qualifications has been questions.

If the federal government wants quality education, they should invest in quality teachers, quality infrastructure and spend more money in training and retraining of teachers.

After banning part time programmes, what next? I still wonder why they have not banned NYSC that has become a waste of resource, time and energy and a liability to the nation.

The executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Julius Okojie has suspended part-time programmes in Nigerian universities.

He disclosed this in Abuja yesterday while announcing the accreditation of National Open University of Nigeria,NOUN.

According to Okojie, the step was aimed at rationalising the activities as well as bringing them in line with best practices and to ensure standards.

The reasons for suspending the part-time programmes he said included illegal operations by some of the institutions and over-bloated population in the admission process among others.

He stated that when the ban was lifted, admission into part-time programme would not exceed 20 per cent intake, and added that lectures for all part-time programmes would be restricted to university campuses only.

He said, “for now all part-time programmes are suspended, we are going to streamline them. In the effect, we should not have more than 20 per cent of the total students’ population on part-time programmes.

“All part-time programmes must be located on campus, we don’t want satellite campuses again”.

He emphasised that regulation is the major part of the commission’s activities and NUC will not hesitate to wield the big stick on any defaulting institution.

Meanwhile, NUC has announced the accreditation of 30 out of the 31 programmes run by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Announcing the result of the accreditation visit which was conducted in March this year, Prof Okojie said only Nursing Science was denied accreditation for using a 10 years old curriculum.

Its very obvious u're so myopic in.ur reasoning. because u have an area thug doing d prog simply means every part time student lacks focue and direction. I can bet it with u many of the full time graduates of what-so-ever school u cld have gotten ur cert. will collapse third mainland bridge if they're called on to give a 5min talk. See, a grad, I mean an engrn grad 4 dat matter from UNILAG...sorry MAUULAG didn't know d instrment 4 measurn pressure..seriously...I (HND holder) had to put him thru. I admit the prog is abused, but scrapping it wont solve the problem. They shld have a rethink and address d issue instead of increasing the illeteracy level n the country.

wesley80: OP what's your source? A blanket ban on all part-time programmes in tertiary institutions wld be absurd. Are u sure you're not confusing this with the over abused long distance programmes?
its true acording to pèople, NUC said they dnt benefit from d money coming out of d programme.

This not ok. i dont believe it. Most of the employees in banks (e.g Access Bank, G.T Bank, ECO bank etc) are all OND holders or HND's working as contract staff. Most of them go for these part-time to get a BSC. the govt is about causing great havoc in the life of such people. i suggest the NUC boss should revisit this issue. i do believe this is a political bruhaha.

IT CANT BE REAL.
Re: Your View On Suspension Of University Part - Time Programmes by Flow44: 9:10pm On Jul 03, 2012
What baffles me most is that NUC suspended this part time thing and left the Open University that run solely part-time programmes. So what is the difference?. All this old men in NUC sef.

Re: Your View On Suspension Of University Part - Time Programmes by olaforreal4: 11:46pm On Jul 03, 2012
Does it mean adult aspiring to be educated cannot anylonger. I think the NUC is making a mistake here. Instead of cancelling PT, it ought to be restricted to a certain age level. Eg 30 above.

This is what you should expect when educated illitrates are in power.
Re: Your View On Suspension Of University Part - Time Programmes by crackhouse(m): 8:14am On Jul 04, 2012
It's a welcomed development. Part time programme{i mean the first degree students} have contributed to the high number of illitrate graduates we have in this country who choosed to pay their way out instead of reading their books. It have made mockery of the university education by producing half baked graduates. It's in part time programme that u will see people who are just desperate to get certificates and nothing more, they also do all sorts of exam malpractice to get it b/cos they have the money. They should scrap the part time for B.sc and leave the PGD, M.sc & Phd.

It has been on the news for about two weeks now.i think its a good reform.its been one of d reasons for the fall in standards of the Nigerian educational system.can u imagine this situations; a trader who goes to the market frm mondays to fridays,on saturdays picks his books and go for classes,a govt.worker who only attends saturday classes jst to get a degree,so he can be promoted, all these pple try to manoeuver their ways durin exams,d pass these @ all cost.believe me,they lack concentration and focus on woteva course d r pursuin, they only want dt certificate and not d knowledge.as much as i knw, education needs alot of focus and parttime programmes in Nigeria lacks dt.thank u
