Ogun State might not be able to accommodate the teeming number of people living in and migrating to the state by 2013

Ogun State might not be able to cope with its population by 2013, if government does not prepare logistics to work out the growing population, the National Population Commission (NPC) has said.

According to the NPC, the population in Ogun state is fast increasing and can be attributed to the influx of people from neighbouring states into its territory.

The NPC’s Federal Commissioner, Seyi Aderinokun-Olusanya , who spoke at a press conference in commemoration of the 2012 World Population Day, said it is imperative for the state government to start preparing its budget to meet up the challenges associated with population growth, in the interest of the citizens and residents.

The Commissioner explained that statistics show that many workers in the neigbouring states now reside in Ogun State. She held that the migration has reached an alarming stage and should be a source of concern to the state government.

“Every survey indicates that Ogun State population will be bloated, hence the need for government to start projecting for the future. Ogun State population is exploding,” Ms. Aderinokum-Olusanya said.

She said that the commission would give out regular statistics to help the state make its projection, adding that the state government should endeavor to collaborate with the commission.

The  NPC boss disclosed that of the 1,724 persons who died in 2011, 1,164 comprised of males and 560 were females.

In the same vein, on the birth record of the same year, 55,113 males were born while 53,844 females were given birth to.  She however, noted that people are reluctant to release birth records because of ignorance.

The commission, according to Ms. Aderinokun-Okunsanya, has 105 birth/death registration centres across the state and is spread all over the twenty local government areas.

I'm even surprised it has not yet exploded by now with the way things were going 5 years ago. Ogun houses a lot of people claiming to live in Lagos. What's the solution?
