My Tyem's colleagues, briefed on the matter, said the police threatened to charge the reporter to court over "a criminal case of conspiracy and divulging of official secret".
Nigerians are very funny. I will be back to this thread but allow me laugh first

ugosly: well the last time I checked, a 'classified document or information' is simply one dealing with information concerning National security....so could you please explain how or what investigating a thieving politician and a businessman has to do with National security, are you sure you even know what a classified document or information is??
not neccesarily national security...
Classified information is an information not meant for public domain... Simple and short

Dr. Wise:
Is the journalist being mistaken for Facrook? In my Opinion it is only one person that should be in detention here; Facrook!

I reiterate our POLICE force is STRONG against the WEAK and WEAK against the STRONG. Go after a powerful Facrook and leave an innocent Journalist alone.

Naija and hypocrisy.

Nigeria, the only country in the world were corruption is done openly with the masses doing nothing about it. Where the leaders commit great crimes against it's people without being prosecuted. The only country where a former general was never tried for the massacre of an entire village. Nigeria where they call their system of government democracy while it's actually a narcistic system of government. Only GOD would save this nation.

In the case of FOI, you have to apply for the info you want. But, if you steal it. It becomes an offence against the state.
However, the police are not sure how he got the info, they are only assuming he hacked their system. Meanwhile, there could be a mole in their operations set up.

Billyonaire: I respect your opinion, my assertion was a general notion, if the information he divulged will jeopardize investigation then its worrisome how he has access to such privy information. The police is our friend, at least they are supposed to be.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_scandal

Role of the media

The connection between the break-in and the re-election committee was highlighted by media coverage — in particular, investigative coverage by The Washington Post, Time Magazine, and The New York Times. The coverage dramatically increased publicity and consequent political repercussions. Relying heavily upon anonymous sources, Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered information suggesting knowledge of the break-in, and attempts to cover it up, led deep into the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and the White House.

Chief among the Post's anonymous sources was an individual whom Woodward and Bernstein had nicknamed Deep Throat; thirty years later in 2005, he was revealed to be William Mark Felt, Sr., the former Deputy Director of the FBI. Felt met secretly with Woodward, telling him of Howard Hunt’s involvement with the Watergate break-in, and that the White House staff regarded the stakes in Watergate extremely high. Felt warned Woodward that the FBI wanted to know where he and other reporters were getting their information, as they were uncovering a wider web of crimes than first disclosed. In one of their last meetings, all of which took place at an underground parking garage somewhere in Washington, DC at 2:00 am, Felt cautioned Woodward that he might be followed and not to trust their phone conversations to be secure. Felt also planted leaks about Watergate to Time Magazine, the Washington Daily News and other publications.[13] While Carl Bernstein has ascribed Felt motives to truth telling and protecting the justice system against Presidential abuse, historian Max Holland in his 2012 book Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat claimed Felt planted the leaks to obtain the FBI director's job (the leaks hurt L. Patrick Gray, Nixon's friend who had recently been chosen for the director's position over Felt).[13]. John Dean remarked that "Max has got it right—he nailed it”. Bob Woodward who was interviewed for the book said the idea that they were reporting just what prosecutors had already found is "factually wrong" and a lot of the book is speculations and conjecture. Carl Bernstein said the book is part of the revisionism and debunking industries.[14]

During this early period, most of the media failed to grasp the full implications of the scandal, and concentrated reporting on other topics related to the 1972 Presidential election.[15] After the revelation that one of the convicted burglars wrote to Judge Sirica alleging a high-level coverup, the media shifted its focus. Time Magazine described Nixon as undergoing "daily hell and very little trust". The distrust between the press and the Nixon administration was mutual and greater than usual due to lingering dissatisfaction with events from the Vietnam War. Public distrust of the media reached over 40%.[15]

Nixon and top administration officials discussed using government agencies to "get" what they perceived as hostile media organizations.[15] The discussions had precedent. At the request of Nixon's White House in 1969, the FBI tapped the phones of five reporters. In 1971, the White House requested an audit of the tax return of the editor of Newsday, after he wrote a series of articles about the financial dealings of a friend of the President's.[16]

The Administration and their supporters accused the media of making "wild accusations", putting too much emphasis on this story, and of having a liberal bias against the Administration.[15] Nixon said in a May 1974 interview with a supporter that if he had followed the liberal policies which he thought the media preferred, "Watergate would have been a blip."[17] The media noted that most of the reporting turned out to be accurate and the competitive nature of the media guaranteed massive coverage of the political scandal.[15] Applications to journalism schools reached an all-time high in 1974.[15]

sounds like tricky d-ick would have been right at home with the pdp

He probably has delicate informations and he needs to be checked. The media seems to be making the process complex by releasing informations not related to the findings so far. The probe is very much alive and nothing is going under the carpet.

Sometimes, publishing certain reports jeopardises investigations and derails already established leads. This journalist may have exposed an ace, let's wait and watch this drama nflld, and not to just rush and start taking undue sides, atleast till we get the whole picture.

BTW: Except they have irrefutable proof that the Reporter actually hacked into their Computer systems, all these huffing and puffing will end in a "discharge" at the courts. You can convict someone based on mere suspicion or that you could not "nail" them! wink
