The story of a great flood that destroyed the earth was not unique to the Hebrews, who recorded it in the Bible. The Sumerians, who were earlier than the Hebrews, had their own version of a great flood. Read the Sumerian Flood Myth.

The Flood Myth:

The Sumerian hero Gilgamesh traveled the world in search of a way to cheat death. On one of his journeys, he came across an old man, Utnapishtim, who told Gilgamesh a story from centuries past. The gods brought a flood that swallowed the earth.

The gods were angry at mankind so they sent a flood to destroy him. The god Ea, warned Utnapishtim and instructed him to build an enormous boat to save himself, his family, and "the seed of all living things." He does so, and the gods brought rain which caused the water to rise for many days. When the rains subsided, the boat landed on a mountain, and Utnapishtim set loose first a dove, then a swallow, and finally a raven, which found land. The god Ishtar, created the rainbow and placed it in the sky, as a reminder to the gods and a pledge to mankind that there would be no more floods. The epic of Gilgamesh is a story that closely parallel’s the biblical story of “Noah’s Ark”. Because of its similarity, this has caused people to doubt the historicity of the Genesis flood. There are other reasons people doubt the historicity of the flood account as well, but many of these objections presuppose that The Bible teaches a global flood, a flood that covered the entire planet Earth (In another blog post, I gave solid scriptural reasons why a local flood interpretation is more plausible). So for many of these objections to the Noah’s Ark story, I would agree. I’d be like “Yeah, I agree that it stretches the bounds of plausibility to think that every single species of animal on the planet all got on one boat. I believe Noah only had to gather animals from the Mesopotamian region. So…he only had to accommodate a couple thousand rather than millions or billions.” However this objection doesn’t presuppose anything about the extent of the Genesis flood. This could possibly pose a challenge to anyone who takes the Noah’s Ark story as history. Why is that?

Well, because the story of Gilgamesh is so strikingly similar to the story of the Genesis flood, this prompts people to think that whoever wrote Genesis plagiarized these ancient myths and incorporated them into his own story. Gilgamesh

*Flood occurs in the Mesopotamian plain.
*Main character is warned to build a boat to escape the flood
*Main character is told to save himself, his family, and a sampling of animals
*The boats were sealed with tar
*The boats came to rest on a mountain
*Birds were released to determine if the waters receded
*Main character sacrificed an offering

So what do we do with this evidence? Did the events of Genesis 6-9 not really happen? What does this say about biblical innerency, and divine inspiration? How could God and why would God inspire the writer of Genesis to write something down that didn’t occur? Why would God have Moses plagiarize an ancient myth?

To me, this seems to be a bad argument against the historicity of Noah’s Ark. Saying that Noah's story was copied from the epic of Giglamesh because it predates the writing of Genesis is to commit the post-hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. That in no way proves that Genesis is a myth. Moreover, even though the writing of Genesis post-dates the Gilgamesh epic, I believe the events in Genesis certainly did not. If the Genesis flood actually occured, it could be that the Gilgamesh epic was a distorted version of the Genesis flood after being unreliably passed down through oral traditions (in cultures that didn't have the same tips and tricks that Jews had in which they preserved oral tradition). Who’s to say that Genesis copied from Gilgamesh. Maybe Gilgamesh copied from Genesis if it’s the case that the Noah’s flood actually happened as The Bible says it does. Even though Gilgamesh postdates the book of Genesis, it could be that the events of Genesis predate both, if in fact the flood actually occurred. Quite frankly, that argument commits the same logical errors as those claiming Christ was copied from pagan myths (I refuted the Christ Myth argument elsewhere).

IF the Genesis flood actually happened in real life, then I think it’s entirely possible that, if any borrowing were done at all, Gilgamesh and Atrahasis copied from an actual historical event. The argument is question begging since it assumes the event never really happened. Just because Genesis came after those things doesn’t mean it’s the cause of those things. This is the same mistake Christ-mythicists make. The fictional TV show “Star Trek” preceded the launch of the US space shuttle but that doesn’t mean the newspaper headlines the next day were influenced by Star Trek episodes. Similarity and post-dating doesn’t prove anything. It’s post-hoc ergo propter hoc reasoning.

We all have to deal with the same evidence. However, your presuppositions will color your interpretation to some degree. If you presuppose that The Bible is false, then you already believed that the story of Noah’s Ark was a bunch of hooey. You already believed that it was a myth, so you’re more likely to interpret Gilgamesh as evidence of biblical plagiarism. But if you believe The Bible is true (like I do) or if you’re at least open to the possibility of it being true, you might interpret this as evidence that something like Noah’s Ark actually happened, and that two different sources are telling the same story in different ways. Gilgamesh actually could be used as corroborating evidence for the flood. It all depends on how you interpret the evidence. And it also depends on what your presuppositions are.

I for one, think that the above scenario is true. For several reasons. As I’ve written several times elsewhere, if it can be historically demonstrated that Jesus made claims to deity and if it can be historically evidenced that He died and rose from the dead, then anything Jesus taught about any topic carries a lot of weight! A lot of weight! I happen to think that the historical evidence for Christ’s death and resurrection is very powerful. Click on this link to read about it.

Jesus taught that the flood was history. Jesus mentioned that the days before His second coming would be similar to the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37). "For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be." If these events were not true then Jesus would be a liar and if He was a liar, He would not be our Savior. He could not be God if he treated myth as history, fiction as fact. Jesus would never have mentioned them as having happened if they were only analogies or fables. But He did talk about them as if they actually happened. Moreover, Jesus claimed to be God and backed it up with His resurrection as the historicalevidence shows. Therefore, we should be quick to believe Jesus and skeptical of the skeptics who try to deny the historicity of the flood. After all, God knows what happened. He was there.

I am reading this old book from 1905 by Clair Tisdall, "The Original Sources Of The Qur'an", and it shows that fasting, praying times and praying towards Mecca etc. are identical to what the Sabians did (they existed before Mohammed):

The title "People of the Book" refers to the four communities who then possessed book religions in Arabia, i.e. the Jews, the Christians, the Magians or Zoroastrians, and the Sabians.

The Sabians existed before Muhammad and lived in the Arab peninsula and had a religious book called the ‘Book of Seth’. The Sabians had certain religious rites, among which are seven fixed times of prayer, five of which correspond with that of the Muslims. The sixth is the prayer at dawn, and the seventh a prayer, the time for which is at the end of the sixth hour of the night. Their prayer, like that of Muslims, is one which requires real earnestness and that the worshiper should not let his attention wander to anything else when offering it. They prayed over the dead without either bowing down or prostration, and fasted thirty days.

The connexion with their fast they observed the festivals of Fitr (breaking the fast at the end of the month) and Hilal (new moon), in such a way that the festival of Fitr occurred when the sun entered Aries. And they used to honour the House of Mecca" (the Kabab).

From this account we see clearly that the Muslims have borrowed from this obscure sect not a few of their religious practices all of which they believe were taught them by Muhammad at the command of God through the Angel Gabriel. The Fitr feast at the end of the month is still celebrated by the Muhammadans. They have, as is we known, five stated times of prayer each day, at which prayer is optional, thus having exactly the same number as the Sabians had. Bowing down (raku) and prostration (sujud) are enjoined in Muhammadan worship, but not during the prayers offered at burials. Finally we have seen that the Muslims still most highly honour the Kabab. . The supposition that many of these religious customs were borrowed by Muhammad from the Sabians, and that their religion in general had great influence on Islam at its foundation is confirmed by the fact that, when the Banu Jadhimah of Taif and Mecca announced to Khalid their conversion to Muhammadanism, they did so by crying out, "We have become Sabians” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Ibn Warraq briefly mentions the Sabians in "Why I Am Not A Muslim". It seems that there are two groups of Sabians that could be referred to by this. The first one being the Sabians who originated in Jordan, and the second one being a pagan sect who worshiped stars. Regardless, the similarities in rituals are definitely solid evidence that Islam was by no means an original religion and is heavily based on pagan rituals.

So much for the destruction of the idols in the kaaba.

Exactly. Tisdall's book I am reading (the one linked in the OP) states "And they had festivals at the time of the descending of the five planets to the mansions of their dignity. The five planets are Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Mercury."

This all makes sense now. Mo basically took over parts of other religions. I only started reading the book, but I noticed that later on, it will also discuss Judaism, ancient Arabic rituals etc. it took over. This probably made it easier to sell the new religion to the current believers. In the book, it states that "Muhammad declared that he was Divinely commissioned not to found a new religion but to recall men to the "Faith of Abraham"", so he was basically selling old stuff.

It's plausible but I'm also sceptical. The Sabian tribal religion, like so many others, has unfortunately been lost.

All new religions are based to greater or lesser degrees on extant religions. Islam is not different. The wudu, miswak and ghusl ritual cleansing as well as the five prayers every day are seem to be copypasted from Zoroastrianism but just because they come from Zoroastrianism doesn't mean they weren't shared elsewhere by other faiths.

I've read that Sabians were Arabian Manichaens* as well as Mandaeans. I've also read that Hanifiyya were another Jewish sect like the Ebionites but Nazoreans that refused to accept Christ, so it seems much of what we know is filtered in through scraps of witnesses or the speculation that fills its void.

*I firmly believe that the world is a poorer place that the Gospels of Mani weren't incorporated as the New Testament rather than Christianity. Manicheaesm is an amazing sword and sorcery romp; it has half-demon assassins, zombie warriors, sorcerers and magic spells, strange gods and more.

Wow. Thanks for the link and the info, I'll definitely check this out. I knew previously that Islam had stolen wholesale from Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism but not that it still so much ritual from Sabianism. Also: were you aware that the Hajj was a Pagan ritual that Muhammad stole and 'sanitized'? The process (walking between two mountains, stoning devils, circling the Kabah, animal sacrifice) is practically unchanged from the old Pagan form.

That being said: all religions are built off practices stolen from another culture or religion with their own twists added in; it's turtles all the way down. Christianity, for instance, stole quite a lot from Greek/Roman religion (i.e. that the Gods can have children; Jesus also has many parallels with Dionysus).

Judaism itself, the father of Abrahamic religion, stole wholesale from all kinds of other religion including Babylonian and Egyptian Mythology. For instance: the Flood Myth is stolen (as well as most of Genesis) from an old story in many cultures, (one version exists in the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh but the story is likely older). The Book of Proverbs is essentially a plagiarism of some old Egyptian books of wisdom including the Instruction of Amenemope, The Moses story and the Jewish law steals a lot from the legends around Hammurabi. Job was probably not even written by a Jew and likely predates Judaism. Even the Jewish God 'Yahweh'/'Elohim' is also likely connected to El, the God of the Canaanites and some Egyptian Gods.

It goes on and on. Look at storytelling today: movies often shamelessly steal from previous famous movies, books and television shows do the same. I think it's a very human thing to steal older popular stories and put new twists on them.

Scientists had to suffer torture, silencing, imprisonment and death at the hands of Christians who didn't agree with newly discovered facts about the world. Cancer is the number one killer in the United States, with lung cancer leading as the most deadly form. There has also been significant research proving that cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) has anti-tumor effects against brain cancer, leukemia, lung cancer.

Researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007 that cannabidiol, or CBD, a chemical found in marijuana, may help prevent cancer from spreading. Cannabidiol stops cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1, the study, published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, found. Cancer cells make more copies of this gene than non-cancerous cells, and it helps them spread through the body.

Researchers studied breast cancer cells in the lab that had high expression levels of Id-1 and treated them with cannabidiol. After treatment, the cells had decreased Id-1 expression and were less aggressive spreaders.

Exposing the Old Testament

Most Christians and many others believe the Judeo/Christian Bible to be the word of "God." In truth, nearly everything within the Bible was stolen and corrupted from Pagan religions that predated Judeo/Christianity from hundreds to thousands of years, from all around the world, and in particular, the Far East.

The very term for 'deity,' [when the Lord is not specifically named as Yaweh], is not the singular El but the plural Elohim. 2

The dual aspect of Christianity was stolen from the duality of Zoroastrianism, which preceded the Christian religion by centuries. 3 Yaweh/Jehova replaced Ahura Mazda, and the Old Gods who were the Original Gods [Ahriman, which is Aryan and means "noble" in Sanskrit] were labeled as "evil" in order to establish the supreme monotheism of Yaweh/Jehova. Genesis Chapter 1, verse 26 reads: "And God said "let us make man in our image, after our likeness...."

THE FLOOD
The Flood Story from Gilgamesh predates the Christian account by well over 1,000 years or more.
The Judeo/Christian Bible claims that "Yaweh" incited the flood. In truth, "Enlil" allowed the flood to take place. Tracing Enlil's origins here on earth, we have found he is also known as "Bel" which evolved into the name "Baal" and eventually "Beelzebub" who was God of the Philistines.

The "Flood" is another ancient ALLEGORY that was STOLEN and corrupted from the original Pagan religions and has to do with the flood of energy during the working of the Magnum Opus, after which there are visions of colors indicating an important stage has passed. "Noah" built an ark
EA warned "ZIUSUDRA" aka "UTNAPISHTIM," not "Noah" about the impending flood and instructed him on building an ark. The legend is Sumerian and Akkadian/Babylonian in origin. The "Atrahasis Epic" is the Akkadian/Babylonian account of the Great Flood.
A "dove" returned to the ark with an olive branch signifying the flood was over and the waters receded. In the original Sumerian account, a RAVEN, instead of a "dove" finds dry land. 6
THE TOWER OF BABEL
