can you please explain this? Is a 100m real money?
This is 67,000 dollars, it's a lot of money but Charlie Monger (Warren Buffett's Friend and Partner) always say; 100,000 dollars is the benchmark to enjoy the real magic of Compound interest, however when we compare your fund to the standard of living in Nigeria. Your fund is okay.

This is enlightening. But What if bank a cease operations? E.g Heritage Bank of recent. Perhaps, some have not even collected their money from the bank after the collapse.
You don't have any dealing with the bank. In the case of Stanbic ibtc, you are dealing with Stanbic ibtc asset management arm of operation NOT the bank, if Stanbic bank collapses, your fund is safe. Even if the custodian bank (UBA) collapses, your fund also still safe.

The only type of capital type of investment that isn't safe are Commercial paper and Euro bond.

InvestNaija Market Watch: 11th of August 2025

Happy Monday, INsider!
New week, fresh opportunities and the market wasted no time making moves. The ASI posted a modest gain, but the real fireworks were in insurance stocks, which once again led the charge. Let’s break it down.

💱 Currency

The Naira traded between ₦1,500 and ₦1,540 per US dollar, closing weaker at ₦1,535.93 (-0.15%) according to the CBN.

Nigeria’s gross external reserves ticked up 0.33% to $40.29bn (as of 8 August 2025).

📌 What this means: A slight currency dip offsets the boost in reserves, FX stability remains a balancing act.

📊 Equities

The NGX ASI rose by 0.09% to 145,880.77 points, pushing YTD gains to 41.73%. Gains in MTNN, DANGCEM, and ZENITH helped the index stay green.

Top traded by volume: LINKASSURE (703.59mn), UNIVINSURE (230.54mn), AIICO (154.73mn)

Top traded by value: STANBIC (₦1.70tn), LINKASSURE (₦1.60tn), ZENITHBANK (₦1.20tn)

Sector snapshot:

Gainers: Insurance (+9.74%), Consumer Goods (+0.97%), Banking (+0.44%)

Losers: Industrial (-1.47%), Oil & Gas (-0.56%)

🟢 Top gainers: AIICO (+10.00%), SUNUASSUR (+10.00%), STANBIC (+10.00%)
🔴 Top losers: ABBEYBDS (-10.00%), ABCTRANS (-10.00%), UACN (-9.99%)

📌 What this means: Investors continue to pour into insurance names, while industrial and oil & gas sectors face headwinds.

👀 Did You Know?

The Insurance index’s +9.74% jump today is nearly double Friday’s rally, back-to-back strong sessions that could signal sustained investor momentum.

💵 Fixed Income

OMO: Average benchmark yield fell 5bps to 25.46% as buyers dominated across all maturities.

NTBs: Average yield slid 12bps to 16.59%, with notable demand for the Nov-25 (-37bps) bill.

Bonds: Average benchmark yield rose 2bps to 16.30% as heavy selling hit Apr-37 (+52bps) and Jun-38 (+19bps).

📌 What this means: Short-term instruments are in demand, but longer-dated bonds saw profit-taking.

🏦 Money Market

OPR eased 8bps to 26.42%, while O/N held at 27.00%. System liquidity tightened, with bank balances falling to ₦313.92bn from ₦750.31bn.

📌 What this means: Lower liquidity could push short-term borrowing costs higher later in the week, especially if demand for cash spikes ahead of mid-month settlements.

🌟 Mutual Fund Highlight – Chapel Hill Denham Paramount Fund (Equity)

Closed at ₦50.49 as of 8 August 2025, with a YTD return of 65.82%.
The fund’s performance reflects strong equity market momentum, especially in high-growth sectors like insurance and banking.

📌 What this means: Riding market rallies through an equity mutual fund can deliver impressive gains, remember capital is at risk.

That’s your Monday market wrap, INsider. From insurance rallies to shifting bond yields, the week is already looking interesting. Let’s see where it goes.

Stay INformed,
The InvestNaija Team

📚 Glossary Corner: Today’s Market Terms, Simplified

Mutual Fund: An investment that pools money from many investors to buy a diversified portfolio of securities.
YTD (Year-to-Date): Measures how much an investment has gained or lost from the start of the year up to today.
Liquidity: The amount of cash in the financial system, which affects interest rates.
bps (Basis Points): A unit of measure in finance. 100bps = 1%. Used to describe rate changes.
NAV (Net Asset Value): The price per unit of a mutual fund. It tells you how much each of your units is worth.
Bros, you just copied ChatGPT and posted for us, Not everyone will understand this and you couldn't even bother to explain.

Anyways in layman's language, the summary of what you posted is; people are picking Equities (stocks) over long term bonds. And as at today, the bullish equities are in the Insurance sector, it's worthy to note that the momentum is still ongoing, it also warns that if you run the type of mutual funds which the underlying asset is in equities, then congratulations but be conscious of when the momentum stops. Your capital could be at risk.
InvestmentRe: Mutual Funds by A305:
Neurotika:
Let me say this for those at the back.

I’ve observed that when it comes to MMFs, there are generally two types of investors. The first believes rate fluctuations are normal and sticks with one fund no matter what, even if it falls below market average. The second reacts to significant dips, especially when returns drop below the market average, and moves their capital to sustain better yields.

Both approaches actually have their merits, depending on whether you’re taking a short or long position. I fall into the second category for one reason : I’m a long-term investor working with significant capital, and I always invest with a goal in mind. My benchmarks are built around certain expected rates, and if a fund’s performance becomes too erratic, it throws off my long-term projections.

For example, just a 1.5% lower rate sustained over 10 years on ₦100 million results in a loss of about ₦53.5m (using a conservative rate of 14 and 12.5 percent respectively). That’s not something I’m willing to ignore.

Therefore if you’re investing short-term, rate variations should not matter much unless you’re deploying serious capital. But if you’re locking huge funds for atleast a decade or more, you definitely should be seeking optimal yields.

Compounding works on three key variables: time, capital, and interest. If you’ve got the first two sufficiently but settle for less on the third, you’re simply shortchanging yourself.

Just my two cents….
Like you rightly mentioned; two types of investors.

Invertors 1 — plays the long game and doesn't react to dips and rates.

Investors 2 — reacts to dips because they project for themselves a certain benchmark to earning hence moves elsewhere for better yield.

You correct. however, my answer to this is, Investor 1 are the real Mutual Funds investors, these are real people or targeted audience that Mutual fund investment was invented for and love to cater to.

Investors 2 — These are the business/profit oriented investors who don't have the appetite for HIGH RISK, they are scared to take high risk yet they love high yield but can't take risk. More like, they want to eat their cake and have it.

Mutual funds Investor 2 are part of the people that drove up the share prices of Nigeria Stocks to all time high 2 weeks ago. The rally was massive.

The Nigeria stocks all share index was massive last month.

What happened was: as the capital market was loosing steam and yield dropping (Tbills, MMF etc), they sensed a bullish run, then began to withdraw their money from capital market to buy those stocks to make money.

My prediction is:

Watch out, the next MPC is in September. If CBN still hold MPR more people will leave the capital market and the very moment stocks begin to correct itself, and foreign investors begin to pull out (around Christmas), they will all rush back to come and join us to drag low yield in the capital market.

Anothet thing is, There is usually inflation around December due to over spending and people sending money back home from abroad, let's see if MPR will be increased.

I appreciate this. So Bamboo and dividend paying ETFs over mutual funds ?
Please correct me if I’m wrong, I thought mutual funds managers were the Nigerian version of ‘Hedge funds’ ?
Frankly, in the world of Equities. It's not worth deeping your toes into dividend paying stocks if you don't have the financial muscle. And I mean huge financial muscle. Billionaires that buys so much of it and measures thier worth with it are not fools. But for growth S&P 500 and ETFs, you don't need too much money.

Please DYOR on hedge fund. But I can tell you Hedge fund is why Trust Fund is possible and properly managed and it's the same reason it's called "old money" wealth because it get passed down from generation to generation.

Thanks very much for this ELI5. So far from my observations a lot of the transactions are not instantaneous. Please which mutual fund or platform would you advise if I’m looking for medium to high risk investments with little platform downtimes ?
Go on Bamboo.

Go and buy dividend payinging ETFs or growth S&P500 stocks.

That way, you killing 3 birds with 1 stone.

1 - you hedging against Nigeria inflation

2 - You hedging against forex exchange

3 - You enjoying dividend.

Bonus point - Keep compounding and you won't be broke for life. Even your children will inherit and keep earning your dividends after you pass on.

An alternative

If you have real money; not the kind of chicken change I have oooo. I mean real money (Block money), the kind money that when you deposit it in a bank, Branch manager or regional manager will be calling to check in on you, sending your account statements through a gorgeous female bank staff to your house. That kind money — I will suggest you hand the money to hedge fund manager, go home to sleep and stop dragging MMF rates with us lol

Polchiz:
Stanbic IBTC MMF has gone down further to 19.41%.
It is time to switch to other MMF .
As regards this your fear, I see that some other persons here has replied well to your concern but I feel the need to educate you simplistically so you can educate others in your circle or offline.

MMF, regardless of the (brand/bank name) is a pool of investors that an asset management (brand/bank), collect their all their money to invest in low risk investment mostly Government Tbills, fixed deposits and commercial paper.

Note—Commercial paper isn't entirely low risk, which is why the least allocation of funds goes to it. And most fund are usually allocated to Tbills.

Enter Tbills.Tbills or Treasury bills is government way of issuing promisory note to collect money and pay back shortly within a year. Government can never default or go penniless broke to pay back and in worst case scenario, they will print money to payback debt. The only way you won't get your money back is if Nigeria ceases to exist. (Shout out to Trump and Putin massive number of Nuclear war head), those can really wipe out a country.

Now the reason why rates fluctuate is because of MPR & Inflation rate (Assignment: go learn the full meaning of MPR and submit your assignment here.)

Anyways, MPR in one word means Interest rate, so what happens is; If Nigeria inflation number is high, CBN will increase MPR and Increase Tbills yield to force inflation to come down. This is what has been happening since last Quarter of 2024 till now.
So, when Tbills yield is up, MMF rates will shoot up too because the buck of money invested in MMF is in Tbills. Then you will begin to smile like Dangote lol

What CBN is essentially doing is mopping up and raking in excessive money in circulation. People like me and your will rush to invest in Tbills or MMF for high yield gain but CBN motive is to get rid of our money in circulation.

So back to now: MMF interest is failing, what is happening?

What happened was: Following the last MPC, CBN began to maintain the same MPR for banks, they rebased our inflation from 2009 to 2014 first and secondly rebased our GDP to 2019.

Drum roll ... Ghen,Ghen, Ghen, Ghen..., suddenly inflation numbers began to fall since the second quarter of this year.

Investors like us saw it coming, this was why I made a comment post here in the past two thread page before this one, that MMF rates will soon cool down, a couple of guys type jargon at me but I was smiling offline reading their replies. Anyways, what is happening is Inflation numbers are cooling down, CBN is starting to reduce yield on Tbills, hence MMF rates will reduce too. Thanks to Cardoso Aka Cardi-B.

Why did I take my time to type this much?

I just wanted you to understand that this is normal and this happens in circle, you only being aware of it now because your MMF investment is teethered to the health of the economy and inflation numbers just like the performance of altcoins is anchored to Bitcoin.

Don't panic, Don't pull your money from fund manager 1 to fund manager 2 because they are all experiencing the same shift and transition in the economy. What you should focus instead is the 9th wonder of the world which Albert Einstein called, Compound interest on your MMF.

Peace out.

That makes a lot of sense. Since you’re already into property, you might want to read up on something called fractional real estate investing. It’s a way people are starting small but still getting exposure to real estate without buying a whole house or land upfront. Worth researching if you're looking for where to grow your funds.
MMF is safer than this investment option you pitching to Mr Tolu.

Mr Tolu, Stick with MMF for your sure capital preservation first, before talking or considering interest rate /dividends.

That's the secret of preserving wealth.

Expect more reduction as Nigeria inflation numbers are coming down, the economy has been stable since the start of the second quarter of this year. FX is stable. Dangote and NNPC are reducing fuel price everyday and the last shocker: People in capital market are slowly moving money to equities, commercial paper and ETFs.

All you have to do is wait as you in a safe investment space. BE HAPPY, Nigeria is getting better lol.

In the short run true but in the long run, not true — because if one isn't as smart as you to quickly cut their losses, that person will quickly lose all their portfolio trading shitcoins.

With Btc, you have the chance to plan your trade eventhough things don't go as planned sometimes but it does most times.

Rule number one — Always use less leverage not more 1-5 leverage

Rule number two - Never wait on hope because hope is the last to die. When a trade is not going your way. Confirm the true direction of the trade using "15 min" candle and pull out. No matter what type of candle you using to trade, once the 15 minute candle shows a new direction/pattern, End that trade and take out your money.

I wish you what I wish myself - Goodluck.
