Foreign Affairs / Nancy Pelosi Threatens To Block US/UK Trade Deal Over Northern Ireland Protocol by aadex12: 3:37am On May 20, 2022
The US Congress will not support a free trade agreement with the UK if the Government persists with "deeply concerning" plans to "unilaterally discard" the Northern Ireland Protocol, House speaker Nancy Pelosi has said.

In a strongly-worded intervention, Ms Pelosi urged the UK and the EU to continue negotiations on the Northern Ireland Protocol to uphold peace in the region.

The congresswoman said in a statement: "The Good Friday Accords are the bedrock of peace in Northern Ireland and a beacon of hope for the entire world.
Ensuring there remains no physical border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland is absolutely necessary for upholding this landmark agreement, which has transformed Northern Ireland."

The comments from Ms Pelosi are a reminder of the ongoing interest in Northern Ireland at the highest levels in Washington, amid political instability following the Assembly election.

It is deeply concerning that the United Kingdom now seeks to unilaterally discard the Northern Ireland Protocol, which preserves the important progress and stability forged by the Accords. It continues to enjoy strong bipartisan & bicameral support in the United States Congress.
— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) May 19, 2022

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is currently blocking the re-establishment of Stormont's power-sharing institutions in protest at the protocol, which has created economic barriers on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

This week, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced plans to legislate to override parts of the Brexit withdrawal treaty the UK struck with the EU.

It is deeply concerning that the United Kingdom is now seeking to unilaterally discard the Northern Ireland Protocol. Negotiated agreements like the Protocol preserve the important progress and stability forged by the Good Friday Accords, which continue to enjoy strong bipartisan and bicameral support in the United States Congress," Ms Pelosi said.

"As I have stated in my conversations with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary and Members of the House of Commons, if the United Kingdom chooses to undermine the Good Friday Accords, the Congress cannot and will not support a bilateral free trade agreement with the United Kingdom.

"Respectful of the will of the British people and of Brexit, I urge constructive, collaborative and good-faith negotiations to implement an agreement that upholds peace.

"The children of Northern Ireland, who have never known the bloody conflict and do not want to go back, deserve a future free of the violence where all may reach their fulfillment."

Foreign Affairs / Argentina Preparing To Become A BRICS Member With Support From China And Brazil by aadex12: 10:58am On May 16, 2022
Argentina has been invited by Chinese president Xi Jinping to participate in three BRICS events taking place in the coming four weeks. The first will be a get-together of political parties, social organizations and think tanks, a second on May 20th, is a summit of foreign ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS full members, and the Argentine minister guest. Finally, on June24 a summit of the five-plus one leaders is scheduled.

According to Argentine ambassador in Beijing, Sabino Vaca Narvaja the BRICS group meetings and summit will be by video conference and zoom, and Xi's invitation to Argentina is “most important”, since Argentina has been wanting to join the group since it took off in 2009. Last February when Argentine president Alberto Fernandez was on an official visit to China he officially reiterated the request.

Beijing is currently the chair of the group which derives its name from the initials of the five countries.

Likewise the Argentine candidacy also has the support from neighboring Brazil, who last April through Economy minister Paulo Guedes anticipated that he would promote the incorporation of Argentina to the New Development Bank, created by BRICS in 2014.The team of advisors from former president Lula da Silva, campaigning again for the presidency next October also favor Argentina's membership.

Argentina's central bank has strengthened its international reserves position with its counterpart in Beijing, through a currencies swap agreement, and has promised some 35bn dollars for infrastructure investments.

Ambassador Vaca Narvaja pointed out that China is Argentina's second trade partner with almost 20 billion dollars of bilateral business in 2021, plus the fact that China is a strong political supporter of several Argentine foreign policy issues such as its claim over the Falkland Islands.

Furthermore the Chinese Agriculture Ministry has extended its approval to soybean seeds, HB4, created in Argentina which are drought resistant, the first such bio-technologic feat for Argentine scientists recognized by China. Not to mention that during April Argentina officially joined Beijing's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative.

This is also the year that China and Argentina are celebrating the establishing of diplomatic relations, fifty years ago, and the government of Alberto Fernandez has finally managed the chair of CELAC, Conference of Latin American and Caribbean States, which should render a more significant backing to talks with Beijing and BRICS' leaders conference.

Foreign Affairs / Russia 'moves Heavy Military Equipment Including Missile Systems Towards Finnish by aadex12: 12:14pm On Apr 12, 2022
Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov (pictured left, with Putin) told reporters yesterday that the possible accession of Sweden and Finland to the NATO military alliance would not improve the situation in Europe

Yesterday NATO announced two multinational naval groups of sixteen ships led by the Royal Netherlands Navy will be patrolling the Baltic Sea coasts of members such as Poland and Estonia to 'maintain a credible and capable defensive capability'.

Finland, along with neighbouring Sweden, has historically avoided NATO membership, despite close alignment with the West, in an effort not to provoke Russia.

But the Scandinavian country shares a 830 mile long border with Russia and has been unnerved by Putin's invasion of Ukraine, having been invaded once before by the Soviet Union in 1939.

Meanwhile, Sweden's ruling party formally began debating the possibility of launching a bid for membership yesterday, a move which would signal a complete role reversal in policy for the Scandinavian kingdom that has remained militarily neutral for decades.

Party secretary Tobias Baudin told local media that the NATO review should be complete within the next few months.

'When Russia invaded Ukraine, Sweden's security position changed fundamentally,' the party said in a statement.

Foreign Affairs / Putin Might Have Sent Nuclear Armed Bombers Into Sweden’s Air Space by aadex12: 1:06pm On Apr 04, 2022
Did Russia Send nuclear-armed planes toward Sweden which violated their air space? Just as NATO forces are avoiding entering Russian air space or deploying NATO troops into Russian territory, the Kremlin has so far refrained from attacking NATO territory. However, local reports – that we are unable to verify independently – seem to suggest that Russia may have violated Swedish and European Union airspace on March 2.

Swedish TV station TV4 and European Pravda both report that the Russian air force deliberately violated Swedish airspace at the beginning of March to intimidate Sweden in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

What Happened?

According to reports, a group of fighters jets left the Kaliningrad Russian airbase on March 2. There was a total of four aircraft, two of which were Su-27 fighter jets and the other two were Su-24 bombers. The planes were reportedly equipped with nuclear weapons.

Given that Russians had already invaded Ukraine at this point, the Swedish Air Force was already on high alert and noticed the planes heading towards Swedish airspace, determining that they were heading to Gotland.

The jets eventually entered Swedish air space and stayed there for roughly one minute. It prompted the Swedish air force to deploy two JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets in response. However, reports have not confirmed whether the aircraft deployed by the Swedish military were also equipped with nuclear weapons.

If true, it is potentially a much bigger story than recent comments from the Kremlin that tactical nuclear weapons may be deployed in the event of an “existential threat” to Russia. This potentially shows that Russia is more than just talk when it comes to the use of nuclear weapons, given that they may have already been deployed.

“We see it as a conscious action. This is very serious, especially because they are a country at hand,” Swedish Air Force commander Karl-Johan Edström said.

Could This Push Sweden Into NATO?

If Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t want NATO to expand, then sending Russian bombers equipped with nuclear missiles was probably the wrong decision.

Despite Russian foreign ministry spokesman Sergei Belyayev threatening Sweden and Russia over joining NATO earlier this month, it appears more likely than ever that Sweden will join the international military alliance.

“It is obvious that [if] Finland and Sweden join NATO, which is a military organisation to begin with, there will be serious military and political consequences,” Belyayev told Interfax. “It would require changing the whole palette of relations with these countries and require retaliatory measures.”

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it seems more likely than ever that Sweden will join the international military alliance.

Sweden’s Moderate Party has made applying to join NATO one of five major election pledges as the country heads towards its September national election.

“Sweden belongs in Nato,” party leader Ulf Kristersson said at the party’s annual congress. “The question is… no longer ‘if?’, but exactly ‘when?’, and exactly ‘how?’.”

Kristersson promised to do “everything” he could as Swedish prime minister to “do everything to lead Sweden into NATO during the next mandate period.”

Sweden and Finland also recently took part in NATO military exercises last week. As members of the European Union, the two countries maintain a close relationship with NATO forces despite not officially being members.

While Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson rejected calls from the opposition Moderate Party to join NATO in March, that situation could change depending on the result of September’s election.

Foreign Affairs / US Increases Imports Of Russian Oil By 43% In The Last Week by aadex12: 12:57am On Apr 04, 2022
The United States increased crude oil supplies from Russia by 43 percent, or 100,000 barrels per day, over the past week, Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Mikhail Popov reported Sunday.

"The US forced the Europeans to impose sanctions against Russia, while they themselves not only continue to import oil from Russia but also increased the volume of supplies of the black gold by 43 percent over the past week, to 100,000 barrels per day!" said Popov in an interview with the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Inflation in Europe Reaches Highest Level in 25 Years

According to the deputy secretary of the Security Council, Europe should expect similar "surprises" from the US.

He also stressed that "Washington does not allow Europeans to take similar measures for the time being."

"Moreover, Washington allowed its companies to export mineral fertilizers from Russia, recognizing them as essential goods," Popov added.

Numerous countries began tightening sanctions against Russia after Putin recognized the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics as sovereign states on February 21. Three days later, he launched a "special military operation" in Ukraine, claiming that both republics requested help in the face of Kiev's aggression.

The United States and Europe condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine and activated several batteries of individual and sectoral sanctions aimed at inflicting the most significant possible damage to the Russian economy in an attempt to pressure Moscow to withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory.

Foreign Affairs / Trump Rips Iran Nuke Talks: 'how Stupid Is This Country?' by aadex12: 1:30am On Apr 03, 2022
Former President Donald Trump blasted the Biden administration not only revisiting a new Iran nuclear deal, but permitting Russia and China to lead the negotiations.

"So we have Russia negotiating the deal – with China as a backup – how stupid is this country," Trump lamented to his Save America rally in Washington Township, Michigan, which aired live on Newsmax. "They are so stupid.

"And the deal is a disaster. It's turning out to be. Nobody can even believe it. But we're giving everything away – all the things that we fought for with Iran."

Trump, who decertified former President Barack Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal), added his administration would have made a new nuclear deal with Iran.

"They would have made a deal," Trump continued. "Within one week after we took office, they would have made a deal. They were so ready to make a deal."

Foreign Affairs / 10 Euros A Loaf? German Farmers Warn Of Massive Food Price Hikes by aadex12: 3:08am On Mar 28, 2022
Food prices to increase dramatically in Germany

With the war in Ukraine putting pressure on global markets, Germany’s farmers have forecast “price jumps of an unprecedented magnitude” for food. According to a paper published by the German Farmers’ Association last week, the entire food supply chain is facing huge cost increases, which will ultimately be passed on to consumers.

The paper warned that the Ukraine war will have “massive negative consequences for the world foot situation”, especially in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

However, the pinch will also be felt closer to home. The vice president of the Farmers’ Association in Schleswig-Holstein, Klaus-Peter Lucht, told Bild that he expected food prices in Germany to rise by an average of 20 to 40 percent overall. Since Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat, the squeeze will be particularly apparent on the price of bread. Lucht said the price of load “could double. Up to 10 euros.”

He added that some products could become unavailable for the foreseeable future, including sunflower and rapeseed oil and apricot jam, all of which come primarily from Ukraine. “Because of the war in Ukraine, these will soon no longer be available in supermarkets,” Lucht said.
German farmers call for government action

Farmers are calling for “short-term and long-term measures” from the federal government and the EU to stabilise agricultural production. Already, ministers have proposed that farmers be allowed to temporarily farm on so-called ecological priority areas, such as fallow land. The association wants farmers to also be allowed to use pesticides in these areas.

The association has also highlighted the problems facing fertiliser production in Germany and the EU. The process of producing agricultural fertilisers is energy-intensive and requires natural gas. Farmers are warning that, should gas supplies be interrupted, fertiliser production would be impacted, and thus “significantly lower harvests would be inevitable from 2023.”

Saudi Arabia appears to be sending a political message to the U.S. with reports that it will consider accepting yuan payments for oil sold to China, currency strategists say.

The world’s largest crude exporter, which has been in talks with China over yuan-priced contracts for six years, has sped up the negotiations, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The offshore yuan erased earlier losses after the report, yet investors from Nordea Investment Management to Generali Insurance Asset Management said it changes little for the dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency.

“I don’t know if it is really real,” said Guillaume Tresca, a senior emerging-market strategist at Generali in Paris. “It happens at a moment when the geopolitical order is moving. The Saudis are trying to play with what they can. It is just a signal sent to the U.S. they want more consideration.”

The dollar has long been the default currency for pricing energy contracts around the world, elevating the importance of the greenback and bolstering Washington’s geopolitical influence. Yet with U.S. and allied sanctions on Russia restricting payments in dollars and cutting that nation off from half of its foreign reserves, other nations are reconsidering their relationships with the currency.

“Throughout the last few years, there have been many failed attempts to call the demise of the dollar,” said Witold Bahrke, a Copenhagen-based senior macro strategist at Nordea. “We think this is just another of such failed attempts.”

Saudi Arabia’s relations with the U.S. have been strained since Joe Biden was elected president with a promise to turn the kingdom into a “pariah” over the 2018 murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who was critical of the regime. Other areas of stress include the Saudis’ intervention in the Yemen civil war and the Biden administration’s attempts to revive the Iran nuclear deal.

However, there’s another reason to think the Saudis may be bluffing: The riyal is pegged to the dollar, so any potential weakness in the U.S. currency would ricochet back to the kingdom. The peg has shielded the nation from price volatility and allowed its central bank to accumulate reserves. Some investors are skeptical the country will pivot away from that tool as a result.

Still, China has made the internationalization of the yuan a top priority. And countries including Russia, India and Saudi Arabia have sought to include non-dollar payments in their financial systems to reduce their dependence on the U.S. This year’s sanctions on Russia, and the potential economic devastation stemming from its isolation, have brought a new sense of urgency among those countries, according to some strategists.

“It is possible that those that trade with Russia are looking for some contingency plans should the sanctions extend to all payments, especially as India or Saudi Arabia won’t have the same level of coordination with the U.S. that the European Union or the U.K. would have,” said Kaan Nazli, a money manager at Neuberger Berman in The Hague, Netherlands.

Most investors expect such attempts to abandon the dollar will be minor. Over time, however, they could lead to an alternative financial system that captures a limited market share, while still leaving the dollar as the world’s dominant currency.

“Several years down the road, we might see two parallel financial systems globally, but this move by Saudi Arabia alone is not the watershed moment to get there,” said Matthew Weller, global head of research at Forex.com. “This is not the game changer.”

Any country supporting Taiwan militarily would face the "worst consequences," China's government warned Saturday, adding that "no one and no force" would be able to stop the Communist Party if it took action against the island country, according to a report.

China’s relationship with Taiwan has come into focus against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with the island bolstering its own defenses since the war started in case of aggression from the mainland.

Taiwan said it planned to double its yearly missile-production capacity this year. The announcement from the defense ministry came after Taiwan approved an extra $8.6 billion for military spending over the next five years.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has described the ongoing war between his country and Russia as a very difficult one.

Zelensky also said that Russia has succeeded in whipping out some small towns in the country and that those towns would never assist again.

“This war, a difficult war, has truly united our nation.” Zelensky said in a briefing on Saturday, according to CNN.

“A few small towns just don’t exist anymore. And this is a tragedy. They are just gone.

“And people are also gone. They are gone forever. So we are all on the front line.” He noted that people whose lives have been taken by this war died as heroes, adding that Ukraine has lost approximately 1,300 troops as of Saturday.

He added that negotiations to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “must begin with a ceasefire.”

The American authorities previously admitted that Ukraine hosts "biological research facilities", expressing concerns they could come under the control of Russian forces.

The Russian Defence Ministry on Thursday announced that the US-funded biological labs located in Ukraine were conducting experiments with bat coronavirus samples.

"According to the documents, the American side planned to conduct work on pathogens of birds, bats, and reptiles in Ukraine in 2022, with a further transition to studying the possibility of carrying African swine fever and anthrax", chief spokesman for the Ministry of Defence Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

In addition, the facilities were studying the possible spread of pathogens via wild birds, migrating between Russia, Ukraine, and other countries in the region.

"The purpose of this - and other Pentagon-funded biological research in Ukraine, was to create a mechanism for the covert spread of deadly pathogens", he added.

The Russian Defence Ministry will soon publish the documents received from staff at the Ukrainian biolaboratories, as well as the results of their examination, Konashenkov said.
