Sequel to the battering and near-murder of a journalist, Yomi Olomofe, in Badagry last week, the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to file a wide-range of law suits against the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), having briefed its lawyers on the sad occurrence. The Chairman of the union, Comrade Deji Elumoye, made this known in Lagos on Tuesday in a statement issued in Ikeja on the steps taken so far to seek redress over the unfortunate incident. Elumoye said he was baffled that Olomofe, who is the Executive Director and Chairman, Editorial Board of Badagry Prime, a news magazine, was last Thursday beaten to a state of coma by smugglers, in the full glare of the public, within the premises of the Seme-Border Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. Wondering why a journalist going about his lawful duties would be so harassed and molested, Elumoye noted that the leadership of the union has instructed its team of lawyers to file charges, which includes but not limited to attempted-murder, accessory, aiding and abetting, manslaughter, harassment and assault, among others, against the Service and some of its officers, in order to see that justice is done on the matter. The union boss also vowed to ensure that the case would be pursued to a logical conclusion. He further enjoined journalists in the country not to be deterred by what happened to “one of our colleagues” but rather brace up for more challenges in the course of duty, if they are to live up to their billing in exposing the ills and rots in the society. “Customs and its officers are to be held responsible for this, because the incident happened within their territory. They had a duty to protect their visitors but they reneged in their duty. “And why would they allow smugglers and hoodlums into their premises? Those are the people they are supposed to checkmate, but it seems they are now working together. “They will have to explain to the law. We won’t be scared from doing our job. They think they can harass journalists from exposing smugglers, but they have failed. As a matter of fact, this will further spur us to work harder”, the statement further said. Elumoye also reminded his colleagues and employers in the media industry of the existing insurance scheme put in place by the union, urging them to take advantage of the scheme and key into it for individual and collective benefits. |

Some armed men and officials suspected to be working for Mushin Local Government and supported by a team of policemen on Tuesday morning invaded Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market and demolished shops in the market. During the demolition exercise, the traders were barred from entering the market in Mushin, Lagos State, western Nigeria, to remove their goods from the shops. The armed men were battle ready to forestall any resistance from the traders as the demolition was going on. Traders were also not allowed to get near the entrance into the market as tipper lorries were seen taking sand and gravel into the market to commence work after the demolition. The chairman of the market and president of the central market union, Comrade Kingsley Ogunor said he was not informed before they came for the demolition which threw the entire market into confusion. In front of the market gate was a banner placed by those suspected to be behind the demolition with the inscription: Proposed Commercial Development of Mushin, Lagos. It was also written on the banner that Mushin Local Government in conjunction with a developer known as Total Value Integrated Services Limited is to commence building a modern plaza market in place of the present stalls being demolished. The duration for the completion of the project is 18 months. When our reporter visited the market Tuesday morning, some of the traders expressed their surprise over the development and said they were not given any notice, neither was there any court judgment asking them to vacate the stalls. At the time of this report, the traders had started protesting over the demolition and had moved to the Mushin Council secretariat to complain about what they alleged as illegal demolition. When our reporter visited the council, the council secretary, Mr Babajide Bello was not around to comment on the matter. The information officer, Mr Akin Akinwunmi was not also around and did not pick calls at the time of this report. A developer carried out a similar action some time last year and it did not amount to anything as the traders held on to their stalls. It was not yet clear if it is the same developer that is behind the latest demolition.

Afrobeat crown prince, Seun Kuti, currently on tour of U.S. and Europe, has intensified his campaign for the legalisation of marijuana in Africa as it’s being done in the western world. Seun, who has not hidden his love for weeds, like his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, took the campaign further when he took to the social media to share a picture of marijuana packaged as a consumable in one of the cities in the United States. “While the blind government of Africa are still harassing nature and holding back the economic potential of marijuana in Africa, this is what’s happening in the United States of America. #lifeondroad going on astral travel now…” he tweeted days ago. For some time now, Seun has been condemning the non-legalisation of marijuana while cigarette is allowed to thrive. He argued that the position of the law on the two products was illogical. The music star stressed that cigarette which is legalised has lethal consequences, while the banned marijuana was medicinal and good for human consumption. He said cigarette was favoured because the western world and multinationals are profiting from it, stressing that marijuana would make black countries richer than the white if legalised. |

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to become the next President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as Nigeria still retains its seat, an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said on Thursday in Abuja. The official, who preferred anonymity, said the exit of the former Minister Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, had nothing to do with the status of Nigeria as the President of the organisation. The official said the position would be filled after the appointment of a new Minister of Petroleum by the president. It is widely believed that President Buhari will double as the Minister of Petroleum in a bid to rid the ministry of the massive corruption that has plagued it. The official said the former minister was elected at the 166th General Meeting of the OPEC, not in her own capacity but to represent Nigeria. Alison-Madueke was elected the president of the international oil body on Nov. 27, 2014 but started to function in the office in January 2015. The president of OPEC, according to the official, is expected to serve for a period of one year and to preside over the meetings of the conference in the course of that presidency. OPEC, the source says, has Alternate President who exercises the responsibilities of the President during an absence, or when the incumbent s unable to carry out the responsibilities. |
