Webmasters › Google Is Now Alphabet: Search Giant Changes Name by abdussalam(op): 12:32am On Aug 11, 2015*. Modified: 12:55am On Aug 11, 2015 |
Google is to change its name to Alphabet, alongside a major restructuring.
The company will continue to operate as Google in most of the important ways, including the search engine that made it one of the world's biggest companies. But it will operate a holding company named 'Alphabet', announced after stock markets closed.
Alphabet will include not just Google but the company's huge array of other operations. That includes it's life sciences operations, for instance, which is working on a special smart contact lens.
Splitting the company up and rearranging it under a new name will allow each of those different businesses to be run by different bosses, the company said. It will also allow it to report each of those businesses' results separately.
The company also said that its reorganisation would help it concentrate on its more speculative, experimental work.
"Alphabet will also include our X lab, which incubates new efforts like Wing, our drone delivery effort," the company wrote in its announcement. "We are also stoked about growing our investment arms, Ventures and Capital, as part of this new structure." Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page
Sundar Pichai, who before ran most of Google's most important products, will become its CEO. (Pichai had been rumoured to be in the running for the vacant position of Twitter CEO.)
Larry Page wrote in a blog post that the company has "long believed that over time companies tend to get comfortable doing the same thing, just making incremental changes.
"But in the technology industry, where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant."
Referencing Google's 2004 commitment to not become a "conventional company", Page wrote that Google "is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. So we are creating a new company, called Alphabet.
"I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as President."
Google will continue to trade under its existing stock market symbols, GOOG and GOOGL. The company's shares were up over 5 per cent in after hours trading, following the post-close announcement.
All of the existing Google shareholders will see their stock automatically changed to the new company, Alphabet. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/google-is-now-alphabet-search-giant-changes-name-to-avoid-becoming-a-conventional-company-10449227.htmlcc: lalasticlala ishilove mkmyers45 UjSizzle |

avicky: I am currently working on my thesis and it's about the prejudice of Ghanaian English over Nigerian English.
So I will like to use your comment in my data. I need your permission.
In your opinion, do you think Ghanaians speak standard English better than Nigerians? Ghanaians don't necessarily fare better than Nigerians in English. We need to note that certain local languages in each of the countries have phonetic configuration close to BrE. So, no need generalising all English spoken by a Nigerian or a Ghanaian. |

Jobs/Vacancies › How Persons Without Work Experience Can Boost Their Curriculum Vitae by abdussalam(op): 2:01am On Aug 04, 2015 |
Most job offer requirements today usually go with the tag of some years of experience. How do you expect someone who gained admission into the university almost immediately after leaving secondary school or the one who didn’t graduate until he got close to his thirties to boast of work experience worth such a time immediately after graduating?
That’s the question probably bugging the minds of many youths today gunning for employment positions. Here’s some good news for such people: You can still get a job if you want to do so. All that matters is doing the right things. Here are tips that would help boost your CV even without you having any work experience.
It all has to do with the preparation you’ve done for tomorrow.
Acquire Soft Skills
Have additional skills beyond your educational leaning. As much as you can, acquire additional skills that put you ahead of other applicants. Skills ranging from computer appreciation to customer relationship management, data-base management and a couple of others required generally in every organization could put you a step ahead of others. Why not grab today’s opportunity to learn a new skill or improve your competence in that one you have?
Come Off With Good Grades
Although coming off with a good grade might not matter if you already have a job waiting for you upon graduation, it helps at times. Except you have someone out there reserving an employment position for you, keeping up with the minimum academic grade acceptable in job adverts is the best bet. Most job adverts place a Second-Class Upper or an Upper Credit as minimum grade of qualification for Bachelor’s Degree (BA/B.Sc/B.Ed) and Higher National Diploma (HND) applicants respectively. Study hard and smartly, and you’ll be good for it.
Volunteer
During your spare time, join causes that may add to your experience. Put your expertise in programme planning, publicity, public relations, mobilization, social media management, writing, blogging, documentation among others into use while still in the university. There are lots of non-for-profit or non-governmental organizations out there who would appreciate your input in their activities. Visit UN Volunteer, Youth Hub Africa and a host of other sites that publicise volunteering opportunities. Connect with a few of them and you’ll not regret such a decision.
Acquire Professional Certification
If there’s a professional certification recognized by members of your profession, go for it. Those into technology, accounting, management and a few other humanities usually have that requirement tagged to their job qualification criteria. No time is worth being wasted when you already know this. Tag along. Become a professional. Dedicate additional resources to it. Excel in it. There’s no limit to knowledge.
Acquire a Postgraduate Degree
Just as a professional course is relevantly useful in some career paths, a postgraduate degree would help in others. You’ll commonly find the tag ‘Masters Degree is an added advantage’. If you can bear the cost of running a masters programme immediately after the undergraduate experience, don’t waste time. Go for it. Your brain is still fresh to easily remember and make reference to what was taught earlier. Thus, it would be easier to make connections between them. While a postgraduate may be a means to an end, it’s not necessarily a big deal if you’re your own boss and want to remain so for life.
Hold Positions of Responsibility While Studying
This on its own is an experience. Whether you’re a class representative or the General Secretary of the Students’ Union body or the treasurer of your church fellowship or even a member of the planning committee of an event organized by the Muslim Students’ Society, your experience there would later count. Leadership positions expose you to wide range of reflective managerial experience. You could list these in your CV to reflect how responsible you are. It also shows that you are an effective team player.
Write a CV Reflective of Your Engagements
As you’re now equipped with other experience beyond the work experience, let your CV reflect these. Lay emphasis on your skills, certification and co-curricular activities that are related to the job application at hand. These could put you an edge over other prospective employees. Prepare the CV. Proofread it. Share it. Get the job. Work experience is no barrier.

NYSC › Persecution Of Corpers By Soldiers On Camp: The Way Out by abdussalam(op): 6:06am On May 16, 2015 |
How corpers can prevent soldiers from persecuting them on camp by Abdussalam Amoo
I've read the two reported stories of soldiers' persecution/intimidation of corpers in both Nasarrawa State and Katsina State. As much as people would like to blame soldiers, I feel it's wrong blaming them entirely. I'll rather blame the corpers. Soldiers don't go about beating or punishing corpers for no reason. Some corpers behave unruly but expect some non-existent preferential treatment because they 'know' someone or they underrate the soldiers to be less schooled . The recurrence of the incidents elsewhere is preventable if we could all take yield.
While I camped last August at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Paiko Niger State, I was also a 'victim' of soldier 'persecution'. As much as I could, I tried to conduct myself in a dignifying manner throughout the camp except for that unfortunate incident.
Ordinarily, I do arrive at the lecture arena at least an hour before the official time of commencement which is 9am. That day was no exception. Some two hours into the lecture(s) of that day, I felt the need to ease myself (urinate). The closest place I thought I could go was the camp clinic. The soldier in charge of that area ordered me to return after I explained my situation to him. I didn't leave. I told him to STOP WASTING MY TIME (The actual words were: 'I don't have to for this rubbish. You're just wasting my time.'). This provoked the punishment that followed. I was asked to roll on the road in my 5/7 khaki. It wasn't a pleasant experience but I learnt my lessons. Major of them being -- NEVER PROVE A POINT TO A SOLDIER. JUST OBEY THE ORDER!
After serving the unnecessary self-induced punishment, I found another place to ease myself conveniently. Probably if I had turned back when that officer ordered me to do, I could have saved myself from such a punishment. I could have gone to that alternative place (a toilet preceding the clinic). That I disobeyed that soldier against camp instructions preventing movement at certain places and times costed me the pain of the supposed persecution by the soldier.
Those corps members reportedly punished were supposed to be aware of the strict camp rules. All corpers are usually given a booklet containing the schedule of events on camp. We all should endeavour to abide by them. The NYSC was originally designed to be a paramilitary scheme. You can't rule out the involvement of soldiers. Discipline is what the soldiers are there to instill in us. Some people would want to question why some soldiers could be so inhumane. Such people should also question why some corpers could be indiscipline. Respect is reciprocal. An obedient person is well regarded while the unruly is paid in his own coin.
If those corps members had been time-conscious, they could have saved themselves from such incidences. Normally, ill people are meant to be in the clinic, not roaming around. If they can't be accommodated there, they should get a card or any form of evidence indicating their health situation. Those on medication should watch out for making special provision of feeding themselves during the official free periods without downplaying camp rules.
Emergencies do occur and soldiers too aren't immune to such. Should emergency occur, don't let it be when you're on the wrong side of the rules. The soldiers have seen corpers pretending in time past and could assume you are too. Corpers should endeavour to maintain discipline in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidences.
PS: The Yorubas would say 'The head that would be knocked would get knocked even when the person puts on a helmet'. Even after reading this, some corpers would still fall victim of such avoidable persecution. - Abdussalam Amoo is a 2014 Batch B Corps Member serving in Minna, Niger State Source: https://facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1068722549821968&id=100000526988744&_rdr |

NYSC › Re: Was Posted To Niger. by abdussalam(m): 7:48am On Apr 30, 2015 |
Travelling Options for those travelling From Lagos to Paiko, Niger State for the NYSC Orientation Programme Everyone that had obtained their Call Up Letter and was posted to Niger State knows that the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp is located at Abubakar Dada Secondary School, Paiko Minna-Abuja Road, Niger State. There are basically three mediums: by road, rail or by air. Niger State is equally accessible by water but not directly from Lagos. I'm aware buses to Minna and/or environs from Lagos are available at Iddo, Oyingbo, Jibowu, Ojota, Agege and Berger depending on where you wish to take off. The cost by road is around between N3000 and N6000 depending on how you plan your journey. 1. Go to Oyingbo to get a bus directly to Minna. I'll suggest you board the Niger State Transport Authority (NSTA). Any other one operator available would do too. They will take you to Minna. You have to book earlier and get there on time because the buses leave around 6am. On getting to Minna, just take a Chief Servant bus (N50) or a cab (N150) to Paiko. The camp is along the road before getting to Paiko town. 2. You can link up via Abuja. Just alight at Zuba. From Zuba Park, you'll get a Minna cab there (N700-800). Don't forget to inform the driver you're going to Paiko. After alighting, cross to the other side of the road. You can either trek to the camp or take a bike there (N30). Paiko is located before you get to Minna. 3. You can go through Ilorin if peradventure you can't get a direct bus to Niger State. From Lagos, take a bus to Ilorin. At Ilorin, locate a Bida/Minna bound bus depending on the one you see. From Bida, take a bus to Minna. From Minna to Paiko follows thereafter as stated in 1. 4. Consider Booking a flight to Minna. In 1hr 30mins, you'll have landed. It costs N25,500 with Overland Airways (the only airline on the route). They fly only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from MMA 1 at 3:30pm each day. Upon arrival at the airport, exit and jump on a cab to Paiko. Make sure you're not charged above N200 to camp gate. 5. Fly to Abuja. Air tariff varies between N14,500 and N28,500 in the Comfort (Economy) Class. Walk out of the airport and take a cab to Jabi/Zuba Park (N150). Take another to Minna and tell the driver you're are heading for the NYSC Camp, Paiko. It's along the road before you arrive at Minna. Cab to Minna costs N500-700 depending on your take off point. In sum, you should have arrived at the Paiko camp 3hours after leaving Lagos. 6. If you can't still get a direct vehicle going to Minna, try the Lagos to Kaduna route. When you get to Kaduna, locate MANDO Motor Park and board a bus to either Minna or Paiko. 7. Locate buses going through Tagina. When you get to Tagina, alight from the bus & you'll can find Minna cars there. This is the shortest route to Niger from Lagos. 8. Board a train on Wednesday or Friday at the Iddo Railway Station. Trains plying the Lagos-Kano route could be your best bet if you don't want to go through the hassle of body pains as a result of the nature of the bad (federal) roads that lead to Niger State. A First Class ticket to Minna costs N3000 while second class is N1950. You'll arrive Minna about 24hrs after. From the rail station, take a walk to Mobil and get a vehicle heading to Paiko. Additional Information > The distance between Lagos and Paiko is about 640km. It takes an 8 to 12 hour journey by road to arrive there from Lagos, depending on various factors (weather, road condition, traffic, etc). > The city is super hot here. I've become blacker than before. > As of now, Niger is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. Therefore, it wouldn't be tenable to redeploy on the basis on insecurity. > Allawee in Niger State currently stands at N6000. Securing a good paying PPA could add to your income as well. > If you like internet connection like me, I'm happy to inform you that Airtel and Glo are dead fast here. > Power supply isn't a luxury for inhabitants of the capital though a lot of inner towns and villages enjoy between 8-24hours daily. > There is a lot of fish and yam to eat there. Come with your pestle and mortal. > Niger State hosts a lot of historical and monumental sites such as Gurara Falls, Zuma Rock, Shiroro Dam, Kainji National Park, Kainji Dam and Zungeru (former seat of colonial government) amongst others. I wish you safe journey down here. PS: If there's any clarification you want made, call me on 08182129259. |

Please, I need the Addresses of the Almajiri Schools Built by the Federal Government for Research
About two years ago, the Federal Government launched an integrated system of education to cater for the mass of kids who attend almajiri schools in Northern Nigeria and make them learn Islamic education side by side with western education. According to recent campaign claims, it is even said that there are about 150 of such schools built and equipped through ETF support.
I'm about doing some research on the effectiveness of integrating the almajiri system with western education. All efforts to locate the 'integrated' almajiri school addresses hadn't been successful. I had seen only that of Gagi in pictures where President Jonathan was commissioning it and registering pupils (No address was given but I think Gagi sounds familiar). The pictures also showed that the almajiri schools have a different kind of curriculum/textbooks. Beyond the pictures in a political gazette, I know nothing about evidence of the system.
