Politics / Labour Party In Crisis As Okupe, 11 Others Expelled. by abeland: 10:16pm On Dec 01, 2022 |
Crisis hits Labour Party By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta The Ogun State Executive Council of the Labour Party on Thursday expelled the Director-General of Peter Obi- Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and 11 others for refusing to pay their membership dues. According to the SEC, which made the pronouncement after a meeting in Abeokuta, said the action was a violation of their constitution. Those that were expelled alongside with Okupe included Abayomi Collins, Hon. Abel Olaleye, Jagun Lookman, Olori Oluwabukola Soyoye, Mr. Gbadebo Fesomade, (former State Treasurer) and Mr. Abdulmalik Olaleye (former State Youth Leader). Others are Mr. Jide Amusan( former State Publicity Secretary) Mr. Adeshina Wasiu Shojobi (former Asst State Youth Leader), Miss Deborah Adewale, (former Senatorial Women Leader Ogun East) and Mr. Olatunde Abolade (former Asst State Secretary). Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the State Chairman; Michael Ashade and Feyisola Michael; State Secretary, alleged that Okupe and others had refused to pay their membership dues, despite repeated reminder that they should validate their membership by updating their financial status. He asked Okupe to provide evidence of any payment in respect of membership dues prior to December 1, 2022 into any bank account of the LP. He asked the National Chairman of the party, Barr. Julius Abure and the party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to obey the party’s Constitution by relieving Okupe of his position as DG of PCC immediately and appoint another DG for the body, who should come from the North to reflect federal characters and political balance. Ashade hinged the action on article 9(3)xi of the party’s constitution providing that “only fully registered and financially up to date members of the party shall have the right to vie for office in the Ward Executive, Local Government Area Executive, State Executive Councils and the National Working Committee of the Party or be a delegate to the Congresses and the National Convention.” He said, “Article 9(3) iii of our Party’s Constitution states as follows: ‘only members who pay their monthly membership dues at rates prescribed shall be deemed to be bonafide members of the party. Arrears of dues of up to six months shall lead to forfeiture of membership.’’ “Despite repeated demand from various meetings I had with Dr. Doyin Okupe in respect of his mandatory constitutional requirements to fulfill membership status, he has failed woefully in this regards with some others to flagrantly disobey the Constitution of Labour party. “In line with article 19(3) of the Labour Party constitutional provision, we declare that Dr. Doyin Okupe, having failed in the payment of his membership dues for the last six months of joining the party, has forfeited his membership of the party and no longer fit and competent to continue to act as the DG of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC). “We hereby notify our National Chairman, Bar Julius Abure and Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that it’s expedient to obey the Constitution of the party by immediately appoint another DG for the PCC and that should come from the North to reflect Federal Characters and political balance.” He warned that any further act of disobedience by any of the affected former party members would be resisted through lawful means of enforcement in the Court of competent jurisdiction, stressing that the SEC of the party was committed to party supremacy as enshrined in Labour Party constitution. He further warned that legal action would taken against the National Chairman, Barr. Abure and the presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if they failed or foot drag to relieve Doyin Okupe of his position in the party’s campaign council. To fill the positions of those whose membership of LP were terminated, the State Executive Council approved their replacement in acting capacity. The council therefore appointed Mr. Theo Igbozuruike as Acting Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Oladimeji Elizabeth Temidayo, Ag.State Women Leader, Babaseun Ogunyemi, Ag.Dep. State Chairman II, Mr. Adebiyi Adekunle, Ag.State Youth Leader and Mr. Olaniyi Shobajo, Acting State Treasurer. |

Politics / PDP Admits Error In Obaseki's Certificate by abeland: 8:24am On Nov 04, 2020 |
[[b]b]PDP admits error in Obaseki’s certificate TheNations Obaseki Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau Chief THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has admitted the error in Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s University of Ibadan (UI) certificate. It blamed the photocopying machine for the error. The error disqualified Obaseki from seeking a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). A petition by the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its governorship candidate, Iboi Emmanuel, accused Obaseki of forgery, giving false information and perpetuating electoral malpractices. The party prayed the tribunal to disqualify Obaseki for his controversial first degree certificate and nullify the votes cast for him. It also prayed the tribunal to order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election, involving other qualified candidates, but excluding PDP and Obaseki. But PDP, in its reply to ADP and Emmanuel on Tuesday, said there was a mix-up in Obaseki’s admission and graduation year. Read Also: Obaseki prepares for Nov. 12 inauguration The party also admitted that despite the error, Obaseki observed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. It added that the petition was incompetent and statute barred, describing it as a pre-election matter ‘which the tribunal could not entertain’. It said: “While filling the forms for the election in 2016, Obaseki mistakenly filled in 1976 as the year of graduation, which was actually the year of his admission into UI. “At the time Obaseki was completing his Form CF001 in 2016, he deposed to an affidavit, saying he had misplaced the originals of all his certificates, while changing offices, with the intention to apply for a re-issuance of the certificates. “Subsequently, before Obaseki submitted his Form EC9 in 2020, the original certificate issued by UI was found, which has the signatures of then Vice Chancellor and Registrar. The original certificate was issued in A5 size. However, in order for the photocopy to be attached to the Form CF001, the size was reduced to A4 and in the process, leaving out some information on it. “The tribunal lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the petition because it is statute barred; the issues raised by the petitioners are averments which are not relevant in determining the petition… Copyright © 2020. Politics / Defection: What Transpired Between Kwankwaso And Buhari Before His Defection by abeland: 2:39pm On Sep 09, 2018 |
Details of Buhari, Kwankwaso meeting before senator dumped APC The details of the meeting between former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso and President Muhammadu Buhari on the eve of his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have emerged. Others at the meeting were the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole, Governors Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Kashim Shettima of Borno State and Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State. According to Daily Nigerian, Oshiomhole opened the discussion with a background of what transpired in his earlier meeting with Kwankwaso and the efforts he was making towards keeping him in the party. After Oshiomhole’s introduction, the President was said to have assured the lawmaker of his readiness to intervene in his conflict with the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje. Buhari also appealed to Kwankwaso to remain in the APC and return to the Senate in 2019. “We will intervene to ensure that your problem with Ganduje is resolved. There is no need for you leave despite your contributions to the party,” the nation’s leader was quoted as saying. Responding, Kwankwaso was said to have expressed surprise that the President was downplaying the crisis in the party and his feud with Ganduje. “First of all, as I earlier told the Chairman, Adams Oshiomole, I have no interest in going back to Senate. “Mr President, remember that I had audience with you three times on this matter and you failed to take action,” he was quoted as saying. After his comments, others at the meeting also pleaded with the one-time Minister of Defence not to leave the party. Kwankwaso left without any assurance and defected to the PDP the next day. On Thursday, a governor on the platform of the APC revealed that he was sad about the exit of Kwankwaso. The governor made his feelings known in an exclusive chat with DAILY POST. In June, Kwankwaso stayed away from the APC national convention but visited former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a PDP stalwart, same day. 2 Likes |
