This one is too complicated to explain. So there was a temporary tax cut in 2011 that was to end on Dec 31, 2012. This was a tax cut for individuals and businesses alike (decrease in taxes for everyone, yay!!). So if this tax cut ended, there'd be an increase in tax, people would have to pay more, businesses would incur higher costs which would eventually make them to lay off workers. Unemployment rate increases, household income drops and the economy would get bad. I don't know if you know the US economy was at the brink of collapse in 2008. The economy was still recovering from that so if this fiscal cliff occured, the economy would have gone into another recession.

The simplest definition of Economics I can give you is 'it is the allocation of resources'...do these resources allocate by themselves? no, someone has to do it and the someone are politicians. You get? See, most countries lie in between the free market capitalism and socialism. Depending on where a country lies on that spectrum, a government can control economic activity. Government makes policies that affect people's lives which in the long run can affect the country's economy. Also, the government has to spend money, right? They don't just pick up money and spend. They have to consider the costs and benefits of that which they want to use the money to achieve. That is Economics. Am I making some sense?
