Arsenal FC gave Sevilla FC a sobering introduction to the UEFA Champions League as the two-time UEFA Cup winners were beaten on their group-stage debut in London. Emphatic success Cesc Fabregas's deflected first-half shot set the 2006 finalists on their way before Robin van Persie added a second a minute before the hour and substitute Eduardo da Silva rounded off a fine victory in added time. While the Spanish side struggled to produce the swashbuckling form shown in recent Primera División and UEFA Cup campaigns, the Premier League leaders extended their home unbeaten record in the competition to 17 matches. Enterprising opening Sevilla began tentatively, defending in numbers as the hosts dominated possession early on. Daniel Alves and Jesús Navas provided the visitors' principal attacking outlet on the right and the latter had the game's first meaningful shot, firing narrowly over from long range. Arsenal were in the ascendancy, though, and Van Persie stung the hands of Andrés Palop with a fierce right-footed drive having cleverly turned Christian Poulsen. Fabregas fortune The Sevilla goalkeeper was soon in the thick of the action again, blocking Mathieu Flamini's low effort. There was little Palop could do on 27 minutes, however, as Fabregas shot from 25 metres and the ball deflected wickedly off Julien Escudé to wrong-foot the Spanish custodian. It was the in-form midfielder's sixth goal of the season and perhaps his most fortuitous. Kanouté goes close The breakthrough lifted home fans and players alike and Arsenal instantly pressed forward in search of a second. Kolo Touré headed Tomáš Rosický's corner off target before Emmanuel Adebayor sliced a glorious opportunity wide after surging infield. Sevilla had been on the back foot for much of the first period but Frédéric Kanouté reminded Arsenal of their threat, first drawing a sprawling save from Manuel Almunia with his right-footed attempt then narrowly failing to connect with Poulsen's cross when only the faintest of touches was required. Van Persie finish Aleksandr Kerzhakov was sent on for Luis Fabiano at the break as Sevilla shuffled their strike force and Arsenal responded by replacing Rosický with Abou Diaby. The midfielder nearly set up Van Persie with his first touch but the ball ran away from the Dutchman as he took aim. The north London club continued to play with verve and determination and were rewarded with a second goal on 59 minutes, Fabregas whipping over a right-wing free-kick that was flicked on by Adebayor and thumped in by Van Persie. Eduardo gloss When Kerzhakov missed a chance to reply instantly, Sevilla coach Juande Ramos played his final cards by introducing Renato and Seydou Keita, yet he then watched both Adebayor and Van Persie go close after fine work from right-back Bacary Sagna. Sevilla committed men forward in the closing stages and were punished in added time when Aleksandr Hleb found Fabregas for a slide-rule pass that was turned in by Eduardo to ensure Arsenal will go to FC Steaua Bucureşti on 2 October in good heart. Sevilla will look to bounce back against SK Slavia Praha. Fans' Man of the Match Fabregas

Paulo Bento and Sir Alex Ferguson were united in their praise for Edwin van der Sar after the goalkeeper helped Manchester United FC earn a 1-0 Group F victory away to Sporting Clube de Portugal. They also had words about Cristiano Ronaldo, the former Sporting winger who scored the decisive goal, with Bento admitting that while "our fans showed their appreciation and admiration for him by applauding", those on the bench did not necessarily share the sentiment. Paulo Bento, Sporting coach My team put in a good performance against a great side. We dominated the first half, controlled the play and had the best chances. In second half we didn't start that well and the goal came from a moment of poor concentration. We lost the ball following a rebound and failed to reorganise defensively which left Ronaldo in a danger zone. In matches like these mistakes are very costly. Towards the end, when we played with just three defenders, we created chances but Van der Sar stopped us from scoring. The result was unfair because United scored with the first chance they had. It's important to get points on the board but we're not out because of this defeat. We weren't happy that Ronaldo scored, but our fans showed their appreciation and admiration for him by applauding. Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager It was a very important result for us, away, in our first European match. Our aim in the first half was to keep Sporting at bay and we managed that thanks to Van der Sar who made a great save. We changed things in the second half, played deeper and were the better team, though again Van der Sar was fantastic in denying them an equaliser. It was good for Ronaldo to score his first goal of the season. He was well received in his old stadium. He's such a talented player, so young and now we hope he spends his best years with United. He's growing as a player and anything can happen in the future. Sporting succumb to returning Ronaldo Review Van der Sar receives united praise Focus Ronaldo enjoys Sporting homecoming Preview Confident Sporting know no fear Match background Familiar foes to take on Sporting Fans' Man of the Match Cristiano Ronaldo Man.

@ Jackal that was what i told some shit "Arsenal and Chelsea fans" that the return of Gazza and Wazza is big trouble to our opponents. The shit said he aint seen seen Tevez in action. my reply was that: Tevez is a supporting striker, he needs someone to feed him so if wazza returns, He (Tevez) will show the kind of stuff he is made of. @ I-Man i think Silvestre injury should not be a big blow to us. I still have boys whoc an hold chelsea and others up to their mouth. Dont fear my man |
