Also, candidates whose state of origin is captured in the catchment area of their institution of choice according to federal government guidelines on admission, stand a better chance of securing admission into such institutions. You may wish to consider this when selecting your institution.

Pls how can I know this

Federal Universities in Nigeria and their Catchment Areas 2022

Every Federal University in Nigeria has its own Catchment Areas. The Catchment Areas of a University (note that Catchment Areas applies to only Federal Universities) are those Areas (States) that a Federal University is Geographically connected to.

In every merit admission list of every school in Nigeria, the admission list is based on three category;

- The School Merit Cutoff Mark
- Educational Less Privileged States (ELPS); and
- Catchment Areas
From the name of ELDS, I guess you already know what it means. So I will just focus on explaining what catchment area means. Catchment Area means states near a particular University.

To break it down a little bit, we can also say the geographical areas in which an institution is located.

Every Federal Government universities in Nigeria have their own catchment areas that they primarily serves.

This does not mean that the school will not admit students outside the catchment area, but the catchment areas are given special considerations.

IMPLICATIONS OF CATCHMENT AREAS?

This means that students from catchment areas get preference treatments over those from other states during admission. Note that students will still be admitted on merit but there slots reserved for students from catchment areas. They have different cut-off marks for admission and if they are met, they are admitted over applicants from other states.

Let us use the case of UNILAG as an example. The photo below shows the cut-off marks used by UNILAG for 2013/2014 admission. In there, you would see the merit cut-off marks in one column and cut-off points for applicants from catchment states. So, the fact that you have scored the required cut-off mark does not necessarily guarantee you admission. You will have to wait to see how many candidates are taken on merit and those that will come in because they are from admission catchment area/states.

Still on the UNILAG example, if you got an aggregate cut-off point of 64.88 and you are from a catchment state, you would be considered for admission. If you are not from any of the catchment areas, you have to get a cut-off make of 69.13.

Sir, do you mean if I have gotten my profile code and I proceed to bank to get e-pin, I'll pay 4700 at the bank.
Unlike last year where you pay 4k at bank and proceed to CBT center to pay 700,
The question is won't i pay any money at CBT if I paid 4700 at bank?

You are paying N4,000 at the bank and N700 at the CBT centre...

JAMB UTME Guide To Choosing The Right Course And Institution During Registration

1) Choosing A Course of Study:

Ask most candidates what they would like to study in school and they will easily give you an easy answer, but ask them why and they will start to gabble.

Many make the mistake of getting entangled in the unreasonable quest for professional courses like Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Law even when they know that they are not good in those areas.

With the current state of things in Nigeria and the world at large, it is no longer much of what you studied but what you can do with what you studied. So why not apply for a course you have the academic aptitude for or have passion for?

To help you make a good decision on that, I would like you to take time to ask yourself the following;
- What area of Human endeavor would I love to give my Contribution?
- What are my Natural abilities or talents (The things you do so well and yet easily)?
- What subjects am I really good at and have an interest in?
- What would I love to spend the rest of my life doing?

2) Interest Is Crucial:

There is hardly anything you can succeed in when you have little or no interest in such. The reason is that it is hard for you to put in the needed effort (and go the extra mile if need be) to succeed at something you have no interest in. Interest has a way of turning average performers into high achievers. Someone defined it as a psychological state of engagement.

It’s that kind of enthusiasm you have towards something that makes you give it your best and maximum attention. When students have little or no interest in their academics for one reason or the other, it has a way of negatively impacting their academic performances.

Educationists are of the opinion that lack of interest is probably one of the strongest factors affecting students’ performances. Why go for an engineering course when you know how you struggled in high school to make a “C” in Physics and Mathematics.

Many students have been asked to withdraw by their schools’ management due to their inability to cope with the demands of the courses they are studying. This is something they could have avoided if they had gone for a course they are good at.

3) Selection of Institutions:

Candidates should also be informed before making the decision concerning which institution to select or choose. There are three major things to bring into consideration. They are cost, course preference, and catchment area. In terms of ownership, higher institutions of learning are categorized under Public and Private. Private institutions are owned by individuals and organizations while Public institutions are owned by the government.

These public institutions are further grouped into Federal owned (owned by the Federal government) and state-owned (owned by the state government) institutions. This has a cost implication. Federal institutions of learning are cheaper in terms of cost compared to state-owned institutions while Private institutions can be said to be quite on the high side. So you need to put this into consideration. The course you wish to study is another thing you should consider before selecting an institution.

This is so because some institutions are better equipped to offer some courses better than others. Look out for institutions that specialize in your course of interest. Make research, ask questions from students who have attended such institutions before and try to get details of their experience studying such courses in that institution; it is worth the effort.

Also, candidates whose state of origin is captured in the catchment area of their institution of choice according to federal government guidelines on admission, stand a better chance of securing admission into such institutions. You may wish to consider this when selecting your institution.

There should be a space between the word “NIN” and your 11 digit NIN (Note that the number must not have been used by another person to register for UTME/DE in the past). Do not use postpaid or special bundle SIM cards, They don’t work unless specially loaded with credit.

A Profile Code of 10 characters is received by the candidate on the same telephone(SIM) number

The phone number used for the text message is automatically tied to the candidate’s 2022 application, Examination and Admission.

CANDIDATES SHOULD NOTE AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THE SIM NUMBER USED, IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE FOR SUBSEQUENT COMMUNICATION WITH THE BOARD

BY OBTAINING UTME/DE APPLICATION DOCUMENTS, A CANDIDATE HAS ACCEPTED TO RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES FROM JAMB (55019 or 66019) EVEN WHEN THE “DO NOT DISTURB” IS ACTIVATED.
The candidate will present the profile code at the point of procurement of form (Banks, MMOs, MFBs, Switches, USSD Partners). An ePIN is then sent as a text message to the candidate’s Phone number

The candidate will present the ePIN and profile code at any JAMB accredited CBT Centre for registration

The application cannot be completed until the candidate’s biometric (all ten fingers) are captured and photographs taken physically (No submission of passport photograph).

Only candidates whose biometrics verification is successful on examination day will be permitted to sit the UTME. No parent or proxy is allowed to make any transaction on the candidates’ profile.

When choosing a University as your first choice during UTME registration, also make sure to choose a University that has been accredited by NUC to prevent stories that touch in the nearest future.

I'll drop a list below of the illegal Universities in Nigeria compiled by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

What should I do after writing Jamb?
If your jamb score is good then congratulation to you because crossing over jamb universities cut off mark is not as easy as you think. The mistakes many students make is that they think that if they should blast their jamb mark everything is set for them, admission must be given to them so they feel relax to study for post Utme. After Jamb what you need is to prepare for the university Post Utme or Screening.

What should I do after my post Utme or Screening?
Post-UTME / Screening is the major issues all students should look at and work towards it, don’t relax, whether you passed your JAMB excellently or not. This is one of the reasons why candidates don’t gain admission with scores above 250 in JAMB.

If you think you blast jamb by scoring 280 or 290 and your post utme is not up to the University post utme cut off mark, seriously you will be denied admission.

What you have to know is that Post Utme is made up of two ways which are;

1. By an aptitude test i.e (Exam)
2. By Screening of credentials i.e ( your waec and Jamb result)

So kindly take your post utme more serious than your Jamb exam, University award admission to students that merit there fixed cut mark.

What you have to do after writing your post utme or screening is to try and upload your waec result in the JAMB PORTAL so that the university you choose can easily see your waec result if is fake or original, this is what many students don’t know sometimes your jamb scores or post utme score might be good and yet you are still denied of admission reason is that your waec result is not uploaded.

Easy Steps to Gain Admission
There is an adage that says “A school of thought believes ‘it doesn’t matter what you study, just get a good grade and jobs will find you out’. I support that theory, many of our students always go for Professional courses than Career Courses which in the end they are been deny admission.

I know that you will be asking if there is an easy step of gaining admission, to be real with you, there are no easy ways of getting admission into Nigeria Universities. We have really made research and ask some Scholars about the easy ways of gaining admission which we have put down here. Thanks to them.

I will make it short by summarizing everything that can help you gain admission by not letting a year pass you by, check it out and know what to do.

- Apply for Courses that are less competitive
- Apply to Universities that are easy to gain admission
- Have two courses in mind such as Professional Courses or Career Courses for supplementary purposes
- Always Know the Calculation of Your Universities aggregate admission Points

Just because you passed the Jamb cut-off mark threshold of 160/180/200 (depending on school) doesn’t mean your admission is secured. That is why you need to prepare for JAMB very well. The truth is that when you pass Jamb, you are telling the university you apply for that you are ready for them and you have booked tickets for the university.

I am going to review to you a little statistics of last year Jamb below:

In its bid to leverage the digital competence of its increasing number of computer- savvy candidates, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is introducing self-registration outlets in Abuja and Lagos. According to JAMB, the system would, in the long run, reduce the crowds at CBT centres in these cities. The conception of this noble idea is to, besides advancing the digital competence of candidates who feel they can do the registration on their own, expand the registration access points in line with COVID- 19 protocols.

JAMB has adopted 66019 as an additional and optional USSD code besides the 55019 code that had been in operation since 2018 for UTME/DE registration and other essential services offered by the Board.

The 55019 and 66019 are to be used to create their profiles for registration by candidates sitting the 2022/23 UTME/DE. As usual, candidates are required to send their National Identification Number(NIN) via either of these USSD codes for their details to be pulled from the NIMC database before they proceed to any accredited centre for biometric capturing.
