Ivory-Billed Woodpecker
The ivory-billed woodpecker has not been definitively sighted since 1944. If this unique American bird isn't already extinct, it’s not long until it will be.

Call the Dunkleosteus a nasty brute. Call it ugly. Even call it old-fashioned. Just don't call it a picky eater or late to dinner.

This powerful placoderm fish subsisted on just about anything it could get its mitts on: Sharks, fish and even other members of his or her own clan. Without actual teeth, the hungry fish used two long blades to snap and crush its prey. The Dunkleosteus apparently had no problem tracking down its meals, thanks to an enormous frame, speedy swimming and mighty jaw. However it seemed to suffer often from indigestion, not surprisingly

It's almost as if the Dunkleosteus was designed for destruction. Checking in at more than 33 feet (10 meters) and 4,000 tons (3,600 metric tons), the beast was bigger than a killer whale and at least as fierce. It also featured a series of hard, bony plates around its head that are believed to have served as armor for the battering ram. But the fearsome creature also appears to have been both a lover and a fighter. One of the first species to exist in male and female forms, the Dunkleosteus would have been one of the earliest to mate physically in order to reproduce [sources: BBC, Animal Planet].

One of the largest predators in marine history and one of the largest sharks ever recorded, Megalodons were as terrifying as they came.Megalodons prowled the depths during the Cenozoic Era, 28 – 1.5 million years ago, and were a much bigger version of the great white shark, an apex predator of today’s oceans. But while our great whites only reach a maximum length of 20 feet (6m), Megolodons could grow to 65 feet in length (20m) – longer than a school bus!

Tylosaurus was a species of Mosasaur. It was enormous, reaching more than 50 feet (15m) in length. The tylosaurus was a meat eater with a very diverse diet. Stomach remains show signs of fish, sharks, smaller mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and even some flightless birds. They lived during the late Cretaceous in the seas that covered North America, where they sat firmly atop the marine food chain for several million years.

Although hunting and killing of the species is illegal, western lowland gorillas continue to be killed for their meat, which is considered a delicacy, while baby gorillas are captured and kept as pets. The deadly Ebola virus has also devastated the wild ape population. In Gabon's Minkébé Forest alone, the virus killed more than 90% of the region's gorilla and chimpanzee populations.

he story of the Passenger Pigeon is one of the most tragic extinction stories in modern times. As recently as around 200 years ago they weren’t anywhere near extinction. In fact, they were actually the most common bird in North America, and some reports counted single flocks numbering in the billions. Pigeon meat was commercialized and recognized as cheap food, especially for slaves and the poor, which led to a hunting campaign on a massive scale. Furthermore, due to the large size of their flocks, the birds were seen as a threat to farmers. The last Passenger Pigeon, named Martha, died alone at the Cincinnati Zoo at about 1:00 pm on September 1, 1914.

Although it once roamed throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East, the deep-rooted mythology (once domesticated by the ancient Egyptians as a food source and for sacrificial purposes) which surrounded the animal was not enough to save it from European hunters who began hunting them for recreation and meat. People who resided in Morocco shot these animals for fun, and for hunting, which wiped large herds of them out. Many Hartebeests were captured and were kept alive (e.g. in the London Zoo from 1883 to 1907), but they eventually died out. The last Bubal Hartebeest was probably a female which died in the Paris Zoo in 1923.

The Tecopa Pupfish was native in the Mojave Desert, in Inyo County, California, United States of America. This fish subspecies was originally found only in the outflows of North and South Tecopa Hot Springs. It was first described by Robert Rush Miller in 1948. Its decline began in the early 1940s when the northern and the southern spring which were about 10 yards apart were made into canals and bathhouses were build. The popularity of Tecopa Hot Springs in the 1950s and 1960s led to the building of hotels and trailer parks in that area. By 1981 the Tecopa Pupfish was officially delisted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and it became the first animal which was officially declared extinct according to the provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

he Caribbean Monk Seal was the only known seal which was native to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It is also the only species of seal to go extinct directly due to human causes. The Caribbean monk seal was the first New World mammal to be discovered by Columbus and his company on the coast of Santo Domingo in 1494. It appears in the account of Columbus’ second voyage to America. Columbus promptly ordered his crew to kill eight of the animals, which he called “sea-wolves”, for food, paving the way for exploitation of the species by European immigrants who came in his wake. Since then, the once abundant seals have been hunted for their oil and slaughtered by fishermen, who regarded the animals as competitors. It was officially declared extinct just last year, on June 6th, 2008, although the last recorded account of the species was made at Serranilla Bank between Honduras and Jamaica in 1952. Like other true seals, the Caribbean Monk Seal was sluggish on land. This, along with its lack of fear for man, unaggressive and curious behavior, as well as human hunting, and early habitat exclusion by humans throughout their range may have dramatically speed up their decline and likely contributed to its demise.

Are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?"

2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the death of the last passenger pigeon, Martha, who managed to survive only 14 years in captivity after her species became extinct in the wild. More recently, Angalifu, a 44-year-old northern white rhinoceros, died at the San Diego Zoo, leaving just five other white rhinos worldwide, all in captivity. Chances are our grandchildren will never get to see this remarkable creature.

In fact, the world is losing dozens of species every day in what experts are calling the sixth mass extinction in Earth's history. As many as 30% to 50% of all species are moving toward extinction by mid-century — and the blame sits squarely on our shoulders.
"Habitat destruction, pollution or overfishing either kills off wild creatures and plants or leaves them badly weakened," said Derek Tittensor, a marine ecologist at the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge. "The trouble is that in coming decades, the additional threat of worsening climate change will become more and more pronounced and could then kill off these survivors."

About 190 nations met last month at the United Nations climate talks in Lima, Peru, to discuss action needed to curb rising greenhouse gas emissions. It ended with a watered-down agreement that seems unlikely to help much in the battle against global warming.
Corruption and illegal online trafficking also threaten conservation efforts. The illegal wildlife trade is an estimated $10-billion-a-year industry. It's the fifth largest contraband trade after narcotics, fueled by the rising demand for animals as pets, trophies and ingredients in medicine, food and other products.
There's no doubt that we're facing an uphill battle against mankind's unsustainable greed and consumption, but it's a battle we can't afford to lose.
"The thought of having to explain to my children that there were once tigers — real, wild tigers, out there, in the great forests of the world — but that we let them die out, because we were busy — well, it was bad enough explaining about the Tooth Fairy, and that wasn't even my fault," English comedian Simon Evans said.

One of Africa's most famous extinct animals, the quagga was a subspecies of the plains zebra, which was once found in great numbers in South Africa's Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State. It was distinguished from other zebras by having the usual vivid marks on the front part of the body only. In the mid-section, the stripes faded and the dark, inter-stripe spaces became wider, and the hindquarters were a plain brown. The name comes from a Khoikhoi word for zebra and is onomatopoeic, being said to resemble the quagga's call.

The quagga was originally classified as an individual species, Equus quagga, in 1788. Over the next fifty years or so, many other zebras were described by naturalists and explorers. Because of the great variation in coat patterns (no two zebras are alike), taxonomists were left with a great number of described "species", and no easy way to tell which of these were true species, which were subspecies, and which were simply natural variants. Long before this confusion was sorted out, the quagga had been hunted to extinction for meat, hides, and to preserve feed for domesticated stock. The last wild quagga was probably shot in the late 1870s, and the last specimen in captivity died on August 12, 1883 at the Artis Magistra zoo in Amsterdam.

Because of the great confusion between different zebra species, particularly among the general public, the quagga had become extinct before it was realized that it appeared to be a separate species. The quagga was the first extinct creature to have its DNA studied. Recent genetic research at the Smithsonian Institution has demonstrated that the quagga was in fact not a separate species at all, but diverged from the extremely variable plains zebra.

The Javan tiger roamed the Indonesian island of Java in large numbers during the 19th century.

Humans played a large role in the tiger's demise, as they took over the animal's natural habitat and cleared trees. The tiger was also hunted and poisoned by natives, who considered the creature a pest.

The last documented observation of a Javan tiger was made in 1972.

Tasmania Tigers were hunted by humans to extinction

The last known Tasmanian Tiger, a dog-looking creature with a striped body, died in an Australian zoo in 1936.

Although a long-held theory suggested that an unknown disease was partly to blame for the the animal's demise, a new study, published online on Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Journal of Animal Ecology, found that humans alone were responsible for the marsupial's extinction.

Sadly, the Tasmanian Tiger is just one animal in a long list of species that have been wiped out directly or almost directly by the hands of humans.

Animals face many natural threats, including changing temperatures, predators, and unexpected disasters. But no external stresses have proved more destructive to the survival of other living things than man.

FamilyThis Is A Must Story To Read By Everyone. This Story Made My Heart Bleed by Achilies(op): 5:40pm On Oct 27, 2015
MARRIAGE

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and  Said, I've got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly.  Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn't know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know What I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn't seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, Why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the Chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn't Talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what Had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory     Answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn't love her anymore. I just  Pitied her! With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated That she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.

She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent   Ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for Her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I Had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front Of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually A kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several  Weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something At the table. I didn't have supper but went straight to sleep and fell  Asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane.

When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not Care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn't want Anything from me, but needed a month's notice before the divorce. She  Requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a  Life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month's time and she didn't want to disrupt him with our broken Marriage

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to Recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day.

She requested that every day for the month's duration I carry her out of Our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going  Crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd  Request.

I told Jane about my wife's divorce conditions. She laughed loudly and Thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to Face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn't had any body contact since my divorce intention was Explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we  Both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy  In his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to The sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in  My arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don't tell our son about The divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside  The door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the Office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my Chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I  Hadn't looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she  Was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair Was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I  Wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy Returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me.

On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was Growing again. I didn't tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry Her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me  Stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few  Dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my Dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me... she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it's time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer  and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I  might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her     hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly;     it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I  held her tightly and said, I hadn't noticed that our life lacked intimacy.

I drove to office.... jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the  door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind...I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have  a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won't divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I  didn't value the details of our lives, not because we didn't love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart.

Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then  slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.

At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my  wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and  wrote, I'll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead.

My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save  me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push  through with the divorce.-- At least, in the eyes of our son--- I'm a loving husband....

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse's friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

If you don't share this, nothing will happen to you.

If you do, you just might save a marriage.

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they     were to success when they gave up.

A CHRIST-CENTERED MARRIAGE IS A MARRIAGE THAT IS SURE TO LAST A  LIFETIME.

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has  joined together, let not man separate

This fulani herdsmen attacks is a concern issue to all southern states and not just the Yorubas alone.

The s/east have been attacked more than the s/west, genocide is going on in the middle belt by this same people. Instead of us to come together and fight our common enemies we are here fighting ourselves while our enemies are busy killing our loved ones.

When the fulanis are through with the middle belt, they will move south. Be it s/east, s/west or s/south it doesn't matter. If we in the southerners to come together now and defend ourselves, 10 years from now we will have no one but ourselves to blame.

If divisions in the south if not put in check it will always make us look weak in the eyes of the northerners.
