Though Igbos that lived in Lagos have exported the Aso Ebi brouhaha to Igbo land but Igbo culture and tradition still overshadow the Aso Ebi culture borrowed from the Yorubas.


How is Igbo culture better in this regard you may ask? Read below.


In Igbo culture, age grade associations, market unions and cultural groups come together to make contributions to assist their age grade member or market union member in times like this. This culture have now been refined into what Igbos now refer to as "Committee of Friends" that now come together to assist one another in times like this through voluntary fundraising. It may surprise you to know that many Igbos raise more than enough money from these committee of friends such that they even end up having more than enough funds left after the burial or other ceremonies. This was what happened to the popular Obi Cubana Mother's Burial.


Obi Cubana made so much money from his mother's burial through committee of friends and associates such that cows remained a lot that he sold many even after giving away many to people.



Some Igbos even raise business capital from these committee of friends, especially if the person is a social person that use to attend and contribute for others in the past.



Honestly if most Nigerian remove bigotry and follow some Igbo traditions like "Igba boi" apprenticeship and this committee of friends fundraising culture, it will help a lot of Nigerians in life.


This culture of voluntary fundraising is so predominant in Igbo land and has helped Igbo communities to achieve a lot even from the little they have. Igbos use it to raise money to build community Town halls, markets, rural electrification projects. It is this same culture that made ip0b a huge success because Igbos love contributing to any project that will promote Igbo well-being and reason I believe that if they ever get their own country, they might fund the country's budget through individual and group contributions and fundraising campaigns.

What you’re seeing isn’t uncommon in Yoruba homes during *omugwo*, but the balance can slide into uncomfortable territory if it doesn’t shift after the omugwo period.

*Omugwo context:*
In Yoruba culture, omugwo is when the wife’s mother comes to care for the new mother and baby, usually for 3 months. The core job is: care for the baby, feed the new mother well, help her recover, teach baby care. The mother-in-law cooking and serving is part of that - Yoruba mothers often believe a nursing woman shouldn’t stress with housework.

*Where it can look “off”:*
The red flag here is the wife _never_ entering the kitchen, even on weekends, and the mother-in-law washing the husband’s and wife’s clothes too. Traditionally, omugwo isn’t meant to turn the mother-in-law into the permanent househelp. She’s there for the mother and baby. Laundry for the whole household + cooking for everyone + wife completely detached from the kitchen goes beyond normal omugwo.

*Two possible dynamics:*
1. *Cultural + exhaustion*: The new mum might be overwhelmed, relying heavily on mum, and it just became the pattern. Some Yoruba women also defer to their mum’s authority in the kitchen early postpartum.
2. *Role confusion*: If this continues months after omugwo ends, it can create imbalance and quiet resentment. The husband feeling “it’s strange too” is telling - he sees it but may not know how to address it without disrespecting his mother-in-law.

*What’s normal vs abnormal in Yoruba homes:*
- Normal: MIL cooks, cares for baby, teaches daughter, does baby’s laundry, eases daughter back in gradually.
- Abnormal red flag: MIL becomes the default wife for housework long-term, while the wife fully checks out of domestic roles and the husband goes along silently.

The fix is usually a gentle reset after omugwo: the daughter gradually takes back the kitchen, the MIL shifts to advisory + baby help only. If the wife never does, it breeds tension later between husband and wife, or husband and MIL.

Once Nigeria's electoral system is reformed to remove rigging or reduce rigging to less than 10%, you will see Nigerian elected leaders start working to deliver on their campaign promises knowing that only their good works can assure them of reelection and not their party's structure of criminality and the backing of political godfather.

Bia Odogwu , what changed ? I thought you wanted Peter Obi to deputize that selfish man Atiku ? You have started seeing what I am seeing . I had a dream that Peter Obi won the presidency and backed by world powers too. I even saw the first step he took as a president

Not only sokoto. He can't get 10% of the votes he got there in 2023 next year. Let his blind supporters continue to count on the southern votes that will be swept off by Obi. Kwakwanso is much more popular in the north than any politician alive today. The governor of kano's victory in 2023 even when the apc was the ruling party was as a result of Kwakwanso's royalists in Kano,all of whom had now followed him to the NDC. So, the defection of the governor to the apc is immaterial

Kano votes alone will swallow whatever is coming from the south west for tinubu because the votes will be shared between obi and him. In 2023, his lies got some people and they gave him consolatory votes. Every eye don clear now.

My worry is the way other tribes will paint us after the election. Despite our exposure, integrity and sound education, a lot of us followed a bad path, pushing those attributes aside. They'd not be referring to tinubu anymore but yoruba for the failure. We used to speak the truth to government but it doesn't seem to matter anymore. See all our elders keeping quiet. Where's afenifere ? They must not shout marginalisation or stage any nonsense protest cos it won't work.

From all indications, any presidential candidate from any tribe other than yoruba can win presidency without us. All he needs do is play his card well with the north and push us aside. North has the population.

I am even more worried for South East coz the Obi I know will work for all states and regions but South East will just have to wait coz during his tenure as governor , he developed every part of Anambra but only remembered Agulu his home town during his last years as governor

it's very very effective. We got it for my neighbors parents. The father was suffering from prostrate cancer , the mom from osteo arthritis. Within weeks both of them are okay.
