BATTERY-FREE ELECTRONICS BREAKTHROUGH COULD RADICALLY REDUCE E-WASTE IN LANDFILLS Researchers have unveiled a ground-breaking system that allows electronic devices to run without batteries for “an infinite lifetime”. Computer engineers from Northwestern University and Delft University of Technology developed the BFree energy-harvesting technology in order to enable battery-free devices capable of running perpetually with only intermittent energy input. The same team previously introduced the world’s first battery-free Game Boy last year, which is powered energy harvested from the user pushing the buttons. The engineers hope the innovative BFree system will help cut the vast amounts of dead batteries that end up as e-waste in landfills around the world. It will also allow amateur hobbyists and those within the Maker Movement to create their own battery-free electronic devices. “Right now, it’s virtually impossible for hobbyists to develop devices with battery-free hardware, so we wanted to democratise our battery-free platform,” said Josiah Hester, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineeri

In December 2020, Kanu announced that IPOB had organized the Eastern Security Network (ESN) which was supposed to defend southeastern Nigerians from bandits and armed Fulani herders. Kanu later gave all the governors of southeast Nigeria 14 days to ban open-grazing, threatening to deploy the ESN to enforce a ban if the authorities did not do so.[48][49] The Nigerian government regarded the formation of a non-state-sanctioned paramilitary organization as unacceptable and moved to suppress the group. The situation escalated in January 2021 when the Nigerian military was repelled in an attempt to expel the ESN from Orlu, Imo. Before another offensive was launched, Kanu ordered the ESN to withdraw to the bush, temporarily ending the confrontation.[50] The Nigerian army and air force renewed hostilities on February 18 by launching a military offensive against the ESN; the next day, IPOB declared that as of 18 February, a state of war had existed between Nigeria and Biafra.[51][49][12][13] IPOB and other Biafran separatist groups consequently began to mobilize and fight the security forces across several southern Nigerian states. Despite this, Kanu maintained that IPOB was interested in a non-violent solution of the conflict and that ESN was supposed to fight bandits, not the Nigerian security forces.[52] Regardless, Nigerian authorities designated IPOB as terrorist organization and claimed that Kanu was inciting violence.[12][13] On June 27, 2021, Kanu was arrested in Kenya[14] or possibly another location[53][54] by Interpol and extradited to Nigeria where he is supposed to face trial.[12][13][14][53][55] Kanu's brother claimed that he had been arrested by the Kenyan police. Kenyan High Commissioner Wilfred Machage refuted this claim, stating that Kenyan authorities had not been involved in the arrest and challenged anyone to present evidence proving otherwise. When the BBC attempted to request information from Interpol's office in Abuja, the latter did to not answer the calls.[14] Kanu's arrest has sparked anger among Biafran separatists and other Nigerians supportive to his cause. The World Igbo Congress (WIC) declared the arrest "illegal abduction and international gangsterism".[56] Following his arrest, questions had been raised over what was termed "Kanu's disregard of the Nigerian constitution" to abscond bail in 2017. On the occasion of his arraignment in court on 29 June 2021, Kanu told the presiding judge that the Nigerian military forced him to flee the country in 2017. |

By Jude Aguguo Owuamanam Fri Jun 18 2021 Fear has gripped communities in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State over the invasion of their lands by kidnappers. Our correspondent gathered that in the last one week, no fewer than six persons were abducted from Abba, Isu, Abajah and Dim Na Nume. Community members beg ‘thugs’ not to harass workers at erosion sites North West states deepen pension role – Report Three men operating in two Highlander SUVs, last Friday abducted one Mr. Chimezie Okpara in his village of Umudurunna, Abba. Okpara was released on Tuesday night in Owerri after paying some unspecified amount of money as ransom. A few days later, a prominent man was kidnapped in Abajah. But sources said that he was able to negotiate with his kidnappers by allegedly paying N5 million ransom. Two men were also said to have been abducted at Isu, while a reverend sister and another woman were abducted at Dim na Nume. These scenarios have sent shock waves to the neighbouring communities of Amaigbo, Owerre Nkworji and Nkwerre. South East Trust gathered that a stakeholders meeting called by leaders of Dim na Nume could not hold because of security concerns. A community leader, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that the communities were terrified by the new trend. Our correspondent gathered that the police are working on the theory that most of the unknown gunmen dislodged from the city centres and former inmates of Owerri Custodial Centre, who were released during the April 5 attack on the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service, might be responsible for the new trend of kidnapping in the hinterland. This had prompted the police command to deploy special forces to the hinterland to check the ugly trend. In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, the Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, was quoted to have said the immediate deployment of Police Special Forces to the hinterlands was to reinforce the security forces patrolling those areas. This, according to the statement, came as a result of the recent shift of criminal activities to some parts of the hinterlands following the major defeat suffered by the criminal elements in the last few days while attempting to attack Owerri. “While briefing the Special Forces at the Command Headquarters Owerri this morning, the Commissioner of Police charged them to deal ruthlessly with the criminal elements disturbing the hinterlands. The state has witnessed increase in crime since the release of over 1,800 inmates during the attack on the correctional centre in the state. |

The police in Kano State on Tuesday foiled a planned protest by palm oil traders at Galadima area of Kano over recent attacks suffered by their colleagues in the hands of members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Enugu State. Daily Trust gathered that two trucks fully loaded with palm oil worth over N80 million were reportedly burnt by IPOB members on Sunday at Oboloafo, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State on their way to Kano State. How IPOB members burnt our 2 palm oil trucks worth N80m – Kano traders It was further gathered that the aggrieved traders had planned to march around the town with placards, a move that was said to be capable of being infiltrated by hoodlums who would not mind damaging properties as a form of retaliation for the injustice suffered by their kinsmen. Galadima, the location of the palm oil market is situated in Sabongari area of Kano, the residential area of most southerners in the state and just a few miles away from the popular Sabongari market where the majority of southerners in the state trade. When contacted, Mustapha Shu’aibu Sulaiman, the Chairman, Galadima Road Traders Association confirmed the planned protest but said the leadership of the market with the support of the police was able to calm down the aggrieved traders. “Some of these traders wanted to take laws into their hands through reprisal attacks, but because we have a police outpost in the market, I coordinated them all in the police station through the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) there. “He (DPO) asked every one of us to write all our statements there and he advised us on the civil ways to follow. The police handled the issue very well by calming down the infuriated traders. It was even the police that advised them on the right thing to do.” Suleiman said he took the action because he did not want the aggrieved traders to inflict harm or loss on innocent people in Kano, but added that “you know it is painful for someone to lose something this way, but thank God we have succeeded in changing their thoughts on the issue with the help of the police without the situation going out of hand. “The goods belong to our members numbering about 50, who are mostly small businessmen. Some have just 20 jerry cans, some 50 and so on. And, most of them, that was all they had and now both the goods and the trucks have been burnt down.” When contacted, the spokesman for the police, DSP Haruna Abdullahi Kiyawa, asked to be given time to find out from the said DPO and promised to get back. He did not do so as of the time of filing this report. |

Why won't the U.S. sell an F16 fighters to Nigeria, rather than the simple looking Super Tucano? Answered April 28, 2018 The Super Tucano is probably the plane Nigeria needs to fill gaps in its capabilities. For one, the Super Tucano probably fits Nigeria’s economics better. A base version can cost as little as 10 million USD, whereas the current iteration of the F-16 costs on the order of 10 times as much. Perhaps more importantly, the Super Tucano is much cheaper to operate and maintain, has lower training requirements, and has more modest infrastructure needs. The Super Tucano can operate from rural dirt airstrips if need be. Second, the Super Tucano is probably better suited for ferreting out insurgents who don’t have anti-air capabilities. It can stay on station much longer than an F-16 and fly slower and lower, so it can better search for and engage these types of combatants. It has also been shown as very effective against drug smugglers who tend to use light aircraft. The Super Tucano isn’t going to help Nigeria against another professional military, but it certainly can help to deal with domestic threats including terrorist and criminal organizations. |

What is the electoral college, and how does it work? When voters cast their ballots on election day in America, they’re technically not voting directly for the candidates themselves. Instead, under the electoral college, they are essentially casting a ballot for their preferred candidate’s electors. These electors are often party loyalists, or the individuals close to the campaigns. In all but two states, the winner of the popular vote receives all of that state’s electoral college votes — no matter the margin of victory All told, there are 538 electors in the electoral college: one for each member of the House of Representatives, two per senator, and three allocated to the District of Columbia through the 22nd Amendment. So, after voters cast their ballots (and after governors of the states certify the tallies and electoral lists), the electors then meet in December in their respective states. At that point, they then officially vote for president and vice president. Members of the House and Senate then meet in January to take an official tally of those votes. Why does the US run its election this The electoral college is a compromise solution dating back to the origins of the country, when there was considerable concern that urban centres would dominate elections to the detriment of less Because the number of electors a state has is tied to its number of representatives in the House, more populous states have an edge because they wield more by virtue of having greater representation. In order to offset that, the founders of the country determined that each state would also receive one elector per senator — of which each state has two, regardless of its size — thereby giving less populous states a boost. The procedure is detailed in the 12th Amendment of the United States Constitution. Who benefits from the electoral college? In the two most recent elections in which candidates lost the popular vote but won the election anyway, the candidates were Republicans. George W. Bush won in 2000, while Donald Trump won in 2016. Generally speaking, republican support is found in rural areas of the country, while democrats find their support in the urban area If you look at a map of nearly any election, the vast majority of the country will be painted red for republicans no matter the vote. That’s because republicans dominate in sparsely populated areas of the US in the centre of the country; meanwhile, urbanised areas that usually vote Democratic are concentrated on coasts and in relatively few states. |
2020 U.S. ELECTIONS NOVEMBER 3, LAGOS (Reuters) - Hundreds of men and women marched, clad in T-shirts supporting U.S. President Donald Trump or pink fabric dresses bearing the image of Jesus, as they waved American flags, Republican presidential campaign signs, and even a few Nigerian flags. A painted portrait of U.S. President Donald Trump wearing a gold-trimmed red agbada, a traditional flowing robe worn by Yoruba men in southern Nigeria, hangs in an upscale restaurant in Lagos, Nigeria October 18, 2020 in this handout picture obtained by Reuters on November 2, 2020. Peter Udoakang/Handout via REUTERS The rally, after all, was in Onitsha, a city in eastern Nigeria. Trump has disparaged African nations, calling them "shithole here countries" and saying Africans would never leave the United States if allowed in. This year, he added Nigeria and five other countries when he expanded visa curbs. But millions in Africa’s most populous nation love the bombastic 45th U.S. president all the same. “President Trump, may we shout for joy over your victory,” Rev. Daddy Hezekiah of the Living Christ Mission Inc., which organized the Oct. 25 rally, said in a video. A Pew Research Center poll in January found that 58% of Nigerians had confidence in Trump, behind only Israel, the Philippines and Kenya. A 2020 Gallup poll showed 56% of Nigerians approved of U.S. leadership, versus 24% for Europeans. In a posh Lagos eatery, a portrait of Trump in a gold-trimmed red agbada, a flowing robe worn by Yoruba men, hangs on the wall. The traditional clothing is a “mark of respect”, said artist “I made this painting to bring him closer to us,” said the 23-year-old, adding that Trump’s “radical” approach to governing appealed to Nigerians, who are used to hustling in a tough economy to survive. On a busy Lagos road, driver Michael Onyeonoro said if Nigeria found a similar leader, the U.S. visa troubles might not matter. “If we have a person like Trump...Nigeria will be a better place to stay,” Onyeonoro said. “There will be no need of going outside the country.”
