The political momentum in Ondo South took a new turn over the weekend as HRH Dele Omosehin, the Traditional Prime Minister (Lisa) of Osooro Kingdom, officially announced his intention to contest in the 2027 general elections. The declaration, made during a well-attended engagement with stakeholders from Okitipupa, Irele, and surrounding communities, marked a pivotal moment in the growing political movement inspired by HRH Omosehin’s consistent track record in grassroots service and empowerment. Addressing a mixed audience of youth leaders, women groups, community heads, and political allies, HRH Omosehin emphasized that his ambition is born out of deep concern for the future of his people and a burning desire to expand his impact through public office. > “I am not driven by personal ambition, but by the growing demand for responsible, inclusive, and results-oriented leadership. The time has come to elevate the work we’ve done and reach more people through formal representation,” he stated. As the founder of the Bamidele Omosehin Foundation (BOF) and president of the Bamidele Omosehin Group (BOG), Omosehin has delivered wide-reaching philanthropic and developmental interventions—ranging from youth empowerment and education support to widow aid, health outreach, and community development projects. The gathering witnessed strong declarations of support from stakeholders, prayers from traditional leaders, and unanimous pledges of loyalty from various interest groups. Many described HRH Omosehin as “a beacon of hope whose humility, generosity, and commitment set him apart.” While the specific office he intends to contest remains open, political observers agree that his entry into the 2027 race will greatly influence the political trajectory of Ondo South. Signed, Olufowobi Olarewaju Desmond Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to HRH Dele Omosehin

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, rejected a move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to 'cross-examine' its third witness in the ongoing alleged money laundering case against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. While delivering his ruling, Justice Nwite noted that there was no provision in law that permits the court to allow the prosecution to re-examine its witness in the manner proposed. This was just as the EFCC lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro, during the proceedings, described the case instituted against the former governor as a political case. He emphasised that he was not prosecuting a bank official, but a political figure, "one who had even aspired to contest for presidency". He said this while arguments were being raised on whether the defence counsel would cross-examine the 4th witness when the prosecution concluded its examination at 2.30pm or wait till the next day. Responding, the judge said, "Political? If that is the case, then those handling political cases should prepare to take over the matter." On the ruling against the cross-examination of PW3 by the EFCC, the judge said, "I must agree with the learned counsel to the defendant that the prosecution can only cross-examine after it has declared the witness a hostile witness. "The argument of the learned counsel to the prosecution is misconceived...This honourable court is not shutting the prosecution from re-examining the witness, but must restrict itself to pages 1, 14 and 15 of Exhibit 19. "The prosecution is not allowed to re-examine the witness outside the pages prescribed." Nicholas Ojehomon, an internal auditor at the American International School, Abuja, had, at the last hearing, said there was no wired transfer of fees from the Kogi State Government or any of the local Governments in the state to the account of the American school. On cross-examination, he also read out a part of a previous Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment that said there was no court order for AISA to return fees to EFCC or any judgment declaring the money as proceeds of money laundering. After a brief re-examination, and the withdrawal of an earlier question posed to the witness, the EFCC lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, told the court that the Commission had three other witnesses for the day. During examination, Mshelia Arhyel Bata, a compliance officer with Zenith Bank, confirmed that certificates of identification were attached to the statements of account provided by the bank in the seven sets of documents presented, as requested. The court, thereafter, admitted the statements of account of Kogi State Government House Administration, and six others, as exhibits. The witness, on subpoena, educated the court on the withdrawal limits allowed for individuals, corporate organisations and government, saying that before the cashless policy, it was pegged at N10 million for government. The prosecution then took him to the 23rd of May, 2016 on the printed documents, and pointed at a transaction under the name, Abdulsalami Hudu. When the witness was asked to explain the transaction, he said, "It is a cash withdrawal of N10 million in accordance with the then maximum threshold allowed for cheque withdrawal per transaction." He, however, said he had nine cash transactions on the same date. The witness was then told to go to the credit transactions of 30th January, 2018, and he confirmed that there were 10 separate credits of various sums, totalling about N1.092bn. When asked to mention the total amount of withdrawals, the Defendant's counsel cut in, saying, "He (Pinheiro, SAN), knows that they are for security votes." The witness aggregated the total amount of withdrawals to N1.968 billion, saying they were on different dates. He also read out the inflow and outflow between 2nd of May 2018 and 19th May, 2018. After the examination by the prosecution, the judge adjourned to tomorrow, June 27, for cross-examination by the Defendant's Counsel.

By ROTIMI DUROJAIYE Very early on Wednesday, 18th June, 2025, I woke up to a message on some WhatsApp groups, saying that there would be no formal celebration of the 50th birthday anniversary of the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. He would rather prefer to mark it privately, at his Abuja residence, as the day coincided with the birthday of one of his daughters, the message said. At first, I wondered why he wouldn't want to celebrate such a milestone, but then some comments on the groups mentioned the mood of the nation, particularly the sad Benue crisis, among others. I was in Abuja for an advanced training programme and had an engagement around Asokoro, not far from the former Governor's residence. Whenever people talked about his residence, I always thought of Wuse Zone 4. So when I saw the crowd and the very long queue of vehicles, I asked my bolt driver what was going on and he said they were all going to Yahaya Bello's house. "Today is Yahaya Bello's 50th birthday anniversary. All the people that are trekking are going there. That man is a spirit. Kogi people no dey take am joke (Kogi people don't joke with him)," he said. I wondered again how people managed to convince others about the exact opposite of the situation of things just with the kind of propaganda that Nigerians like. For 30 minutes, we were moving slowly, so I told the Bolt driver to stop, so I could satisfy the journalistic curiosity in me. I moved close to different people and asked them if they were invited for a birthday bash. I didn't go straight to the point so that I would get the true picture. "They should have celebrated this birthday in a proper hall instead of inviting people to his residence and causing gridlock like this," I said. "They did not invite us o. But White Lion cannot be 50 years and he will say we should not come. We came to celebrate him on our own. Even if we don't see him, one on one, we have satisfied ourselves that we came to celebrate him. We will post ourselves on Facebook," one of those that I met dancing to the music they were playing themselves, said. "They sent a notice that they are not celebrating. That is their own. 50 years? We will celebrate him on our own o. I even thought GYB was 70 years, with all the achievements he has recorded," another said. I went round, they were all so full of praises, counting all what he had done for the state, and saying that, though he chose a wonderful successor, they did not think anyone could impact the lives of people like Yahaya Bello did. So, I told the Bolt guy to find his way back and called one of my bosses, a Managing Director of a national newspaper, who has links with the former Governor to please help me gain access to the residence. I wanted to see the birthday boy and introduce myself. I also wanted to apologise for some wrong impression in the past. I pushed through the crowd, and after about 15 minutes, someone came out of the compound to let me in. But there was hardly space to put my feet even in the compound. At last, I was ushered in. This was around 5pm. No space to sit. I just stood somewhere. To cut this long story short, the array of former ministers, sitting ministers, former and sitting senators, traditional rulers, Federal representatives, House of Assembly members, all from the three senatorial districts of the state, showed the kind of influence Yahaya Bello has in his state, perhaps not really known outside. I probed further and was told that beyond the propaganda by some people who want to make themselves popular by all means and beyond the bitter politics in Kogi, everyone knows that what Yahaya Bello has achieved in eight years, in terms of infrastructural development, in health, education and other critical sectors, including security, no Governor has gone near since the creation of the state. I listened to goodwill messages, one after the other, even from those we thought were unrepentant enemies during the 2023 election, and I came to the conclusion that truly, former Governor Yahaya Bello is a hero of all times. But before I end this short piece, I must say I left there unhappy. I couldn't meet the former governor, one on one, or take a picture with him. No one also served me food, probably because I was standing all through! The last sentence is on a lighter note. Finally, I wish the White Lion many more years of fulfilled dreams. .DUROJAIYE, a journalist, was the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to former Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State between 2015 & 2019.

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Akoko, Oluwaseun Ajongbolo, has felicitated with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on his triumph at the Tribunal. Speaking on Thursday, Ajongbolo described the development as blessing for the residents of the state. He said, “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s victory is a blessing to the people of our state because he truly has their best interest at heart. “We all believed he would win at the Tribunal, and the result confirms that. Winning in all 18 local government areas shows how much the people trust and support him, the 18-0 victory is clear and cannot be challenged. “Even before the Tribunal delivered its judgment, the Governor had already started working. He has commissioned several projects and launched new ones. Just on Tuesday, he visited Akungba to flag off the dualization of the Akungba-Ikare road. This shows he has not allowed distractions to stop him from doing his job. “Now that the legal battle is over, we believe Governor Aiyedatiwa will do even more. The confidence the people have shown him will push him to deliver more development projects and improve the lives of everyone across the state. His focus has always been on good governance, and he will continue in that direction. “This victory has united the people and strengthened our hope in the future. It’s time for everyone, regardless of political differences, to come together and support the Governor. We are confident that the state will witness greater progress under his leadership.”

Charakids Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has distributed school materials worth million of naira to 180 pupils in Emure-Ile Community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items distributed include school bags, books, food flasks, other schools materials, and drinks of different types, among others. The programme was in collaboration with the NYSC SDGs Corps Members, Owo Chapter, and was themed “Spreading Smiles, Inspire Life”. Timilehin Origbemisoye, Foundation Chief Operations Officer, at the distribution on Tuesday in Owo, said that the beneficiaries were drawn from three different schools in the community. According to Origbemisoye, the gesture is to celebrate children and put smiles on their faces because majority of them are undergoing depression due to parents inability to afford their daily needs. “It behooves on us to celebrate, encourage and support our children for them to have a better life in the society. “Today, we are here to tell them that there are people that actually care for them, there are people that have their interests at heart. “We want our pupils to also know that things are going to improve with time, they should know that they will not be in that position for the rest of their lives. “Most importantly, they should not engage in any form of criminality that can destroy their future because the future is bright, if they work hard,” she said. Origbemisoye, therefore, called for more support to less privileges especially children from other NGOs, and philanthropists for them to achieve their dream goals in the country. “I believe that if every NGO decides to help at least 10 children in a month, with the number of the NGOs in Nigeria, thousands of pupils will be taken out of poverty. “The number of school dropouts will also be reduced drastically,” she said. Also, Mr Folorunsho Akinwale, Headmaster, The Apostolic Primary School, Emure-Ile, commended the foundation for its gesture towards the children. Akinwale said that it would go a long way to assist the parents, especially during the economy hardship facing the country. “I must call on sons, daughters and well-to-do persons in the community to emulate the foundation to support these children in their academic careers,” he said. Master Lukman Yakubu, a primary six pupil of The Apostolic Primary School; and Glory Peter, a JSS 1 student of Community Grammar School, Emure-Ile, appreciated the foundation and promised to utilise the gifts given to them. “Our prayer is that Charakids Foundation will not lack in life. And we want people to help children because we are the future of tomorrow. “Moreover, nobody knows tomorrow, because a time will come that they will not be able to work or have money. We will be the one helping them,” the duo said. One of the highlights of the event was the lecture by a facilitator teaching children to share happiness through kindness. (NAN)

The 3rd prosecution witness in the alleged money laundering case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, spoken before the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday. He admitted that there was no wired transfer of fees from the Kogi State Governmentor any of the local Governments in the state to the account of the American International School, Abuja. During cross-examination by the Defendant's counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, Nicholas Ojehomon, an internal auditor at the American International School, Abuja, also admitted that there was no transfer bearing the name Yahaya Bello in the documents. Justice Emeka Nwite had earlier rejected the EFCC's objection to the admissibility of a judgment of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in suit number FCT/HC/CV/2574/2023 between Mr Ali Bello and Incorporated Trustees of American International School. The Judge had, at the last hearing, adjourned for ruling on the admissibility of the judgment, which had decided the issue of payment of fees or refund in the ongoing case in favour of the defendant. While delivering his ruling, he said the objection of the prosecution was preemptive, adding that the court had since moved away from the platform of technicalities to the platform of substantial justice. The judge recalled that the EFCC lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, had, at the last hearing, on March 7, 2025, objected to the admissibility of the documents, saying the trial was a criminal trial and the defendant could not tender documents when the prosecution had not closed its case. He therefore urged the court to reject the document. Counsel to the defendant, Joseph Daudu, SAN, had, however, argued that the admissibility of the document was exclusively by the principle of relevance. In his ruling on Thursday, Justice Nwite said the issue of tendering documents was governed by the law, looking at: "whether the facts are pleaded, whether the documents are relevant, whether the documents are admissible." He added, "Admissibility of documents is strictly guided by law as far as it satisfies the provision of Section 102 and 104 of the Evidence Act. "The question is: at what point can the defendant tender documents?" Justice Nwite said the court was inclined to agree with the counsel to the defendant, noting that the court was already on the platform of substantial justice. "Consequently, the argument that the defence cannot present the document is hereby discountenanced," the judge declared. "Having said that, the objection of the prosecution is indeed preemptive. Consequently, the objection of the learned counsel to the prosecution is hereby overruled. "The document sought to be tendered is hereby marked as Exhibit 19," Nwite said. The witness, who is the 3rd Prosecution witness, while being cross-examined, said he had worked with the American International School for eight years and was employed as an internal auditor. When he was given Exhibit 19 (the FCT Court judgment), and asked to read out parts of the judgment, the prosecution counsel, Olukayode Enitan, SAN, objected. "The witness has already been shown the exhibit admitted as evidence. Anything that needs to be done with the judgment is not within his opinion. That is for those of us here because the witness is not a legal expert. Let us save time by not asking the witness this," he said. "I am not asking for the witness' opinion. I am speaking to the document just the same way they did," Daudu SAN responded. The EFCC lawyer said the difference between the document and the ones they tendered "is that those documents are not judgments of the court." "But it has been tendered and admitted by the court. I should be allowed to conduct my case the way I like. My lord, what I am saying is that I should be allowed to conduct my case because it may be devastating to my case if I am not allowed to," the Defendant's Counsel stated. The judge agreed. The witness therefore read out the part of the judgment that said there was no court order for the school to return the money to EFCC or any judgment declaring the money as proceeds of money laundering. The judgment also said AISA ought not to have paid the money to EFCC, that AISA cannot pay the EFCC or any other person monies paid under the future fee agreement without an order of the Court. In addition, the Judgment held that AISA had a binding contract with the Bello family on future fee payments of school fees of children in the school and they cannot derogate therefrom. The witness also admitted that the name of Yahaya Bello was not on the letter for the payment of the $760,910 to American International School. On the source of the payment of school fees to the school, the EFCC witness admitted that there was no wired transfer from the Kogi State Government or any of the local Governments in the state. "If you check the entire statement, is there any wired transfer coming from the Kogi State government? Any column?" The Defendant's lawyer asked. "No, there is no such name," the witness responded. "What of any local government," the Defendant's lawyer asked. Again, the witness said, "No." Justice Nwite, after this, adjourned the case to tomorrow, May 9, 2025, for continuation of trial.

U.S.-based activist and media personality, Dr. Sandra Duru, has accused suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of offering her a N200 million bribe to falsely implicate Senate President Godswill Akpabio in an organ harvesting scandal. During a Facebook live broadcast on Thursday night, Duru, widely known as Prof. Mgbeke, said she had submitted recordings of her phone conversations with the Senator to U.S. authorities and other international bodies for forensic review. She said the evidence debunks the allegations of sexual harassment previously made against Akpabio by Natasha, as well as the senator’s claim that she had never interacted with Duru. According to Duru, when the sexual harassment narrative failed to gain traction, Natasha proposed a more damning accusation—linking Akpabio to the death of a young girl and alleged organ harvesting. Duru stated she rejected the offer and decided to go public with the information. She urged the Nigerian Police Force and international security agencies, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), to investigate Natasha’s alleged fabrications and her silence over the death of a young woman, Umoren, who died in 2021. In her hour-long broadcast, Duru claimed Natasha was driven by a personal agenda to destroy men and gain political advantage. She displayed call logs and WhatsApp messages as evidence of their conversations, in which Natasha allegedly admitted she had no proof of sexual harassment against Akpabio. “She said Nigerians are ‘G and H’—Gullible and Hungry. I told her she’s a pathological liar and a disgrace to the nation,” Duru stated. She also accused Natasha of making divisive political comments, including expressing a desire to dismantle what she allegedly referred to as the “Yoruba government.” Duru claimed the Senator had disclosed that her ultimate target was not Akpabio, but the Nigerian presidency, and that she had been promised the governorship of Kogi State or a ministerial appointment if she succeeded. Duru emphasized that an autopsy had already ruled out organ harvesting in Umoren’s death and challenged Natasha to explain what she purportedly knew about the case, having kept quiet for years. “She said she wants the Senate President removed so their group can push their agenda. I’ve petitioned international agencies because someone who claims to have key information about a murder case cannot just remain silent,” Duru said.

Dr. Sandra Duru, a Nigerian activist based in the United States, has publicly accused suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of attempting to fabricate accusations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, allegedly offering her N200 million to do so. During a live Facebook session on Thursday night, Duru, also known as “Prof. Mgbeke,” revealed shocking details of her interactions with Akpoti-Uduaghan, claiming the senator sought her help in accusing Akpabio of organ harvesting after previous sexual harassment allegations failed to gain momentum. Duru shared call logs and WhatsApp messages as evidence to counter Natasha’s claim that they had never communicated. She labeled the senator as “a pathological liar,” asserting that the discussions exposed a wider political scheme. According to Duru, Akpoti-Uduaghan told her that attacking the current government was a surefire way to gain popularity in Nigeria, pointing out that Nigerians are “gullible and hungry.” Duru further alleged that Natasha revealed she had been promised either the governorship position in Kogi State or a role as Minister of Petroleum in exchange for her efforts. The activist also claimed that Natasha shared a plan with her sponsors to force Akpabio’s resignation in order to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s political position and prevent his re-election. In her one-hour, eight-minute broadcast, Duru also accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of bribing former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, to interfere with Senate proceedings and prevent the submission of evidence on the sexual harassment claims. Duru stated that Natasha admitted the sexual harassment allegations were false and expressed dissatisfaction with Ezekwesili and another associate for failing to defend her during the Senate investigation. Further allegations were made by Duru, who claimed Natasha asked her to contact foreign organizations, including UK parliamentary bodies, and accuse Akpabio of organ harvesting. Natasha allegedly linked Akpabio to the death of a young woman named Umoren, suggesting that her kidney was taken for the senator’s wife. “She was determined to remove Akpabio from his position,” Duru said, adding that Natasha believed Akpabio was hindering her sponsors’ objectives in the National Assembly. Although Duru refrained from revealing all of Natasha’s comments about her husband, Emmanuel Uduaghan, she did mention that the senator had accused him of poisoning her, threatening to retaliate in kind. Duru concluded by stating that after refusing Natasha’s offer of money, she faced threats. She also revealed that she had shared crucial evidence and names with relevant authorities.

Renowned lawyer and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has written a second letter to the suspended senator representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, demanding a retraction of what he described as her "clearly false and unsubstantiated" sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He said the latest letter became necessary, owing to the fact that the embattled Senator had failed to clarify the significant contradictions in her allegations against Akpabio, as demanded in his first letter, dated April 14, 2025. Agbakoba, who is also the Senate President's lawyer, made this known at an elaborate press conference in Lagos on Tuesday. He said, instead of clarifying the contradictions in her allegation that Akpabio sexually harassed her on December 8, 2023, and her exaltation of her alleged harasser on her social media accounts on December 9, 2023; Natasha deleted her social media post. In a letter he signed for Olisa Agbakoba Legal (AOL), dated April 22, 2025, and made available to journalists, the former NBA President said, "Recall that in our first letter to you, dated April 14, 2025, we requested that you clarify contradictions in your sexual harassment allegation against our client, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Of note is the contradiction as to timeline and dates. "You have failed to clarify your sexual harassment allegation on December 8, 2023 and your exaltation of Senator Akpabio on your social media accounts (Instagram and X/Twitter) on December 9, 2023 - the day after you alleged he sexually harassed you. "Rather than clarify this contradiction, you deleted the social media post, which to us is extremely concerning." The renowned lawyer told journalists that no matter what was said about Akbapio, the duty to prove the allegation rests with the embattled Kogi senator. In addition to the clarification Akpabio's solicitors requested, they also asked Akpoti-Uduaghan to clarify the lengthy timeline it took for her to make the sexual harassment allegation. Agbakoba said, "You claim that the sexual harassment occurred on December 8, 2023 but your allegation was not made until 28th February 2025. One year and 2 months after? "Additionally, rather than take up this serious allegation that occurred on 8 December 2023, you were seen throughout 2024 at several legislative and non-legislative events (locally and internationally) with Senator Akpabio, your alleged harasser. "For example, you were seen together at the Inter-Parliamentary Union session in Geneva on the 24th and 25th of March 2024. In fact, you took several selfies and group photos with him during these events. "All these events were posted in warm tones by you on your social media platforms. Please see screenshot copies of your Facebook post(s) and other photos you took with Senator Akpabio. We find this contradictory and unbelievable." "In light of this and having also failed to clarify inconsistencies pointed in our first letter to you, we demand that you retract sexual harassment allegations against our client as they are clearly false and unsubstantiated," Agbakoba declared.

Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged defamatory statements made against him by the suspended senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. In the petition, written and signed by his solicitor, Mr. N.A. ABUBAKAR Esq, to the IGP on Wednesday, Bello called on the Nigeria Police Force under his (IGP's) leadership to invite Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan to substantiate her allegation against him with credible evidence. "Where she fails to do so, cause her to be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law for criminal defamation, inciting public disturbance and spreading false information injurious to public peace," the lawyer wrote. He said that the utterances made against the former governor were not only false, reckless and inciting, but "they constitute serious criminal defamation, false accusation and incitement to public disorder, all of which are offences under the Nigerian law." The former governor has also written to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, through his Counsels, Chief R.O. Balogun, SAN & Co, demanding retraction and public apology over defamatory statements made against him in two national dailies, or face legal consequences. "Our Client's attention has been drawn to a most disturbing, damaging and criminally defamatory statement made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, during her public address at a political event tagged 'Homecoming Rally' held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in Okehi LGA of Kogi State. "That while addressing attendees at the rally, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan falsely and maliciously uttered the following words in reference to our client: '(Senate President Godswill) Akpabio sent for Yahaya Bello. And it was actually Senator Asuquo from Cross River that drove Yahaya Bello from Hilton Hotel. "I was informed of everything and what I got to know of the meeting was in two folds. He told him to commence my recall and that he was going to fund it - of course, monies changed hands that night. "The second thing he told him was that he should try and kill me. I didn't make this public, but I wrote to the IG of Police. Akpabio told Yahaya Bello. He told him that he should make sure that killing me does not happen in Abuja, that it should be done here, so it would seem as if it's the people that killed me here ...' "That these utterances are not only false, reckless and inciting, but they constitute serious criminal defamation, false accusation and incitement to public disorder, all of which are offences under Nigerian law," Bello's lawyer, Abubakar, wrote in the petition to the IGP. He said Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, penalises a person who knowingly or intentionally sends false messages or information through a computer or network likely to cause harm to the reputation of another person. He added that, in Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan's case, she caused videos of her above statement to be widely circulated online where it has continued to trend till date with the clear intention of causing harm to the reputation of the former governor against Sections 114 and 140 of the Penal Code (applicable in Northern Nigeria) - which criminalises giving false information with intent to mislead public officers or the public. "By accusing our client of plotting an assassination and naming him as a co-conspirator in a purported murder plot (with an attempt to disguise the killing as mob or ethnic violence), Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan has: "Gravely damaged our client's reputation by portraying him as a violent and vengeful political actor and misled the public and tried to incite ethnic and political distrust, especially among clans of Ebiraland in particular and the people of Kogi Central in general. "Brought his name into disrepute on the basis of an allegation so weighty that, if left unchallenged, could harm his political career and personal safety; and abused her parliamentary status and platform by propagating such falsehoods without evidence, in a very public and politically charged setting," the solicitor said. He added, "Our Client states that he has long considered Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as unhinged and apparently possessed of a schizophrenic disorder, characterized by manic narcissism, wild hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and an incurable incontinence with emotions and social interactions - hence his patient indulgence of her in the past while he was Governor in Kogi State when he restrained himself many times from seeking legal redress even though she frequently harassed him in the media with all sorts of horrible and damaging lies. "Our Client, however, asserts that he has long ended his stewardship of Kogi State as Governor and moved on to other pursuits - and that he no longer feels the same duty of paternalistic indulgence which he had for all Kogites as his citizens while in Office, and still exhibits till today, hence his insistence on full redress for her (Akpoti-Uduaghan's) current accusations which, as usual, are totally fabricated and utterly baseless." He urged the IGP to expedite action on the petition, stating that "failure to act in the circumstances of these egregious offences by Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan will embolden others to also weaponise political platforms for dangerous falsehoods and criminal misrepresentation, especially with an eye to gaining dishonest advantage over opponents, thus endangering our democracy." According to him, this is necessary "to preserve public order, safeguard the integrity of public discourse and protect innocent persons from targeted smear campaigns that can endanger lives or destabilise the peace of the state and nation." Bello's lawyers, led by Chief R.O. Balogun, SAN, in a separate letter written to the embattled senator said, "We hereby demand, on behalf of our client, the following: "That you issue a formal retraction of the said defamatory statements, to be published in two national dailies. "That you cease and desist from making any further defamatory statements concerning him, whether directly or by innuendo, and whether published in print, electronic or social media platforms. "That you comply in terms of the foregoing within Fourteen days of the service of this letter on you. "TAKE NOTICE that failure, refusal or neglect to comply with the above demands within the period of FOURTEEN DAYS (14) from the date this Letter is served on you, our client will set the necessary machinery in motion to initiate both civil and criminal proceedings against you without further notice."

Constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District have thanked the Independent National Electoral Commission for validating 208,132 (43.86 per cent) signatures in the petition submitted for the recall of the suspended lawmaker representing the District in the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The constituents, who are registered voters of Kogi Central, noted that, though they had mobilised more than the 50 per cent plus one threshold of registered voters and submitted their petition with full documentation, the validation of 43.86 per cent by the Commission still confirmed that Kogi Central constituents had abandoned the embattled Senator. "Apparently, INEC canceled not less than 35,000 signatures at the administrative stage," the constituents said, while reacting to a statement on the recall process issued by the electoral umpire. In a statement on Thursday, signed by Salihu Habib, on behalf of the petitioners, the constituents insisted that there was no going back on their resolve to bring the Kogi Senator back home. "We will liaise with INEC within the full ambits of the Constitution and regulations to demand for transparency in the handling of our petition. We have utmost confidence in the Commission not to subject the recall process to ambiguity or administrative opacity," the constituents said. They expressed their gratitude to INEC for proving naysayers, who queried the authenticity of their figures, wrong. "We thank INEC for making it clear that the bulk of the people of Kogi Central are behind us and that we did not import a crowd like a desperate, embattled lawmaker," they said. The petitioners insisted that the recall of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan "for misconduct and divisiveness" was non-negotiable. They said, "We are firm in our resolve to restore dignified and collaborative representation to Kogi Central Senatorial District. We will no longer indulge someone who will do and say anything just to remain politically relevant. "The whole of Nigeria watched her deceptive rally last Tuesday where she openly made comments capable of setting, not just Kogi State, but Nigeria ablaze. "How can any patriotic Nigerian accuse other parts of the country of sabotaging Kogi State/the North because LNG plants are sited here? How can a responsible Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria try to pitch the North against the South?" "We will pursue all lawful and constitutional means to ensure our voices are heard and respected. After God, power belongs to the people," the constituents declared.

The Campaign for Democracy has said that the actions taken by the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, since the "avoidable" crisis began a few weeks ago, have put Nigeria's image on trial before the global community. The foremost Civil Society Organisation expressed concern that, rather than addressing the core issues surrounding her suspension within the framework of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan chose to "engage in a campaign of calumny against the Senate as an institution." In a statement on Thursday, signed by its President, CD said Akpoti-Uduaghan's activities within and outside the country since the beginning of the controversy had cast an unfortunate dent on the image of Nigeria, for which she must apologise. According to the organisation, this is nothing but gross misconduct against Nigeria. The statement, however, advised respected Nigerian leaders to always identify when not to play opposition politics with delicate national issues, in the best interest of the nation. "More worrisome is the fact that she has distorted the facts preceding her suspension and curiously held on to her sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President as the reason for the initial actions taken against her. "Taking such misrepresentation to the world stage and representing Nigeria illegally at the Inter Parliamentary Union to air such views can be described as nothing but gross misconduct against the country, for which she needs to apologise. This should not be muddled up with politics," the statement said. The CD said it could not understand why the embattled Senator had abandoned her faith in the Nigerian judiciary. "Having already taken her grievances to the courts, one would have expected her to allow due process to take its course," the CSO noted. "Resorting to media trials, seeking sympathy from foreign audiences while undermining the credibility of the very institutions that can address her concerns have watered down whatever sympathy she could have gained from objective Civil Society Organizations and Nigerians at large," it noted. "Her current confrontational approach serves no productive purpose other than to bring ridicule to Nigeria’s democratic institutions. "As a public official, she has a responsibility to uphold the dignity of her office and promote national cohesion, rather than dragging the country’s name through unnecessary international controversies," the frontline advocate for greater democracy said. The activists commended the electorate of Kogi Central for exercising their constitutional rights to initiate a recall process, saying "this is a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s democracy." "If lawmakers understand that their seats are not guaranteed but are subject to the will of the people, they will prioritise service over personal interests. Accountability is non-negotiable," they said. THE FULL TEXT: The Campaign for Democracy (CD) expresses deep concern over the ongoing international media engagements by the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. We find it worrisome that what should have remained an internal dispute between the Senator and the Nigerian Senate is now being sensationalised across various international platforms, putting Nigeria’s reputation on trial before the global community. Since the avoidable crisis began at the National Assembly, CD had refrained from taking a stand on the issues in the news. But it has become very important to advise respected Nigerian leaders to identify when it is not in the best interest of the nation to play opposition politics with delicate national issues. We are concerned that, rather than addressing the core issues surrounding her suspension within the framework of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has chosen to engage in a campaign of calumny against the Senate as an institution. More worrisome is the fact that she has distorted the facts preceding her suspension and curiously held on to her sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President as the reason for the initial actions taken against her. Taking such misrepresentation to the world stage and representing Nigeria illegally at the Inter Parliamentary Union to air such views can be described as nothing but gross misconduct against the country, for which she needs to apologise. This should not be muddled up with politics. Her activities in and outside the country, are a dent on the image of our nation and portray us in a negative light before the international community. Every patriotic Nigerian should reject this. CD is equally perplexed as to why Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has abandoned her faith in the Nigerian judiciary. Having already taken her grievances to the courts, one would have expected her to allow due process to take its course. Resorting to media trials, seeking sympathy from foreign audiences while undermining the credibility of the very institutions that can address her concerns have watered down whatever sympathy she could have gained from objective Civil Society Organizations and Nigerians at large. This matter is made worse by the fact that this is not the first time Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has made such allegations without substantiation. Many people have given the example of her allegations against a former presidential spokesman, Mr. Reno Omokri, which were later exposed as false. While CD upholds the right of every individual to seek justice, we strongly advise Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to embrace the due processes of law in seeking justice and possibly seek reconciliation with the Senate. Her current confrontational approach serves no productive purpose other than to bring ridicule to Nigeria’s democratic institutions. As a public official, she has a responsibility to uphold the dignity of her office and promote national cohesion, rather than dragging the country’s name through unnecessary international controversies. The decision by the people of Kogi Central to recall the Senator is a constitutional and democratic step, and we strongly affirm that no constituency should be left without representation due to the actions of a single individual. It is a good thing that the Independent National Electoral Commission is taking a neutral stance on this issue by ensuring due diligence in the recall process, which it kick-started with a notification letter to the embattled Senator on Wednesday. The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan stems largely from issues tied to her personal actions rather than matters directly benefiting her constituents. Democracy thrives when elected representatives are accountable to the people who put them in office, and when they fail to uphold this responsibility, the electorate have every right to act in their best interest. The Campaign for Democracy commends the electorate of Kogi Central for exercising their constitutional right to initiate a recall process. This is a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. If lawmakers understand that their seats are not guaranteed but are subject to the will of the people, they will prioritise service over personal interests. Accountability is non-negotiable. Lastly, we call on all well-meaning Nigerians to encourage dialogue and constructive engagement in resolving internal disputes within our democracy. Nigeria’s image must not be sacrificed on the altar of personal grievances or politics. Signed: Comrade Ifeanyi Odili, President

Former Member House of Representatives for Akoko South East/South West in Ondo State, Hon. Babatunde Kolawole says the family remains the first line of defense against crime calling on parents to instil good morals and discipline in their children. Hon Babatunde Kolawole made the remark at the youth multi stakeholders summit on social vices organized by the Coalition of Nigerian youths on security and safety affairs (CONYSSA) in Akure, Ondo state capital. Hon Kolawole who was the Chairman on the occasion says security is a collective responsibility of all which will in turn strengthen policies and initiatives that will assist law enforcement agencies to deter crime in the state. The former federal legislator popularly called "Amaechi" said "Many young people engage in crime due to poverty, peer pressure, and lack of proper guidance. "We must redefine success and teach our youth that wealth without hard work is temporary and dangerous. Through mentorship, career guidance, and value reorientation, we can shape a generation that values honesty and integrity." Say 'She's now paper weight in Kogi Central' .'Akpoti-Uduaghan is an oppressor playing victim' Thousands of Kogi Central constituents have unanimously thrown their weights behind the ongoing recall process for the suspended Senator representing the District in the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying no amount of falsehood and propaganda can derail the process. The constituents noted that it had become clear that her being in the Senate was an error, adding that they were determined to correct that error. The over 10,000 constituents, from the five local government areas in Kogi Central, under the platform of Kogi Central Grassroots Movement, spoke through a statement, on Wednesday, signed by the Coordinator, Kogi Central Grassroots Movement, AbdulHameed Jimoh; and Secretary, Mohammed Abdullahi. They accused the camp of the embattled Senator of fabricating videos and deliberately distorting information on the recall, but insisted that she had come to the end of her stay at the Senate. The constituents advised Nigerians to ignore the rant of a few people on social media, but visit Kogi Central to see that "the embattled Senator is currently a paper-weight politician." "She (Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan) accused the state government of being behind her recall when she knows that even those who were her strong loyalists in the Central have abandoned her. "She went to the National Assembly to pursue her personal interest, not the interest of Kogi Central. "To worsen matters, she has turned herself to a laughing stock in the international community with the ridiculous allegations against the Senate President and her deliberate attempt to deceive the world that her suspension was as a result of the sexual harassment allegations," they said. The Kogi Central indigenes stated, "Senator Natasha has always been the oppressor playing the victim against the oppressed. Last weekend, she sent items to people in Okene to convince them to come out the next day for a protest. "They imported people from outside the district to join her very few and reluctant aides and called them Kogi Central constituents. "Yet, in their usual way of distorting facts, the embattled Senator and her team churned out orchestrated false media reports that people had been hoodwinked into signing the recall register aimed at recalling her from the Senate." According to them, keen observers of the whole shenanigans, since it broke out between Senator Natasha and the entire Senate, "will agree that the Kogi Central senator has put the Central Senatorial District in the eye of the storm for the wrong reasons again." "No reasonable constituents will fold their arms and see their senatorial district dragged to the mud without doing something to remedy it. "The recall process therefore is a necessity and deliberate attempt by the people of Kogi Central to tell the whole world that they are not in support of the unruly behaviour of the senator. She should leave the stage to face her strange activism and quarrels so that we can have quality representation," the statement said. According to the constituents, the embattled Senator erred by going to IPU, UN to externalise what is purely a domestic issue, allegedly in a bid to embarrass the Federal Government of Nigeria. "You can't go and disgrace your country before the world and still continue to maintain leadership position. The best bet for her was to resign and since she is refusing to do that, the people are determined to show her the way out. "We wish to call on the media to verify the narratives been pushed out by a few people who have decided to close their eyes to the numerous atrocious behaviours of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. "We also reject the insults that thousands of people who thronged the various voting centres to sign up in the registers for the recall were either tricked with promise of empowerment or payment of cash. "The electorate seen across the senatorial district participating in the exercise are too sophisticated to be deceived," they maintained.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Mr. Oluwaseun Ajongbolo, has dismissed calls for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s resignation, describing those behind them as mere attention seekers. Ajongbolo stated that blaming the governor for the recent killings in the state and demanding his resignation is illogical, as it does not address the root of the security challenges. Speaking in an interview with our correspondent, he expressed condolences to the families of those reportedly killed by herdsmen. He said, “I came across a news report suggesting that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa should resign due to the recent killings in the Akure area. Those pushing this narrative are merely seeking attention and attempting to tarnish the Governor’s reputation. “It is disheartening to see how some individuals are quick to politicize sensitive security matters rather than contributing meaningful solutions. Governance is a collective effort, and security challenges should not be exploited for personal or political gains. “Before this unfortunate incident, the Governor had made significant strides in tackling insecurity. His administration has strengthened security operations, equipped law enforcement agencies, and collaborated with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property. “Rather than blaming him, we should acknowledge these efforts and provide constructive support to enhance security measures further. Besides, is resignation truly the solution? Governor Aiyedatiwa has performed excellently across various sectors, from infrastructure to healthcare and education. “His leadership has been instrumental in driving progress, and he deserves commendation and encouragement to do even more. “Moreover, those calling for his resignation fail to realize that insecurity is a national challenge that requires a collective approach. “It is unfair to hold the Governor solely responsible for incidents beyond his immediate control when he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to protecting the people. Instead of engaging in baseless criticisms, stakeholders should rally behind the government, offer solutions, and work together to combat security threats. “Leadership is not about abandoning responsibilities in the face of challenges but about finding sustainable solutions, which the Governor is already doing. He added: “I deeply sympathize with the families of the victims allegedly killed by herdsmen. No community should have to endure such tragic losses, and I stand with them in this difficult time. I am confident that the Governor is fully committed to identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Indigenes of Kogi Central Senatorial District have criticized the recent court injunction secured by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as a desperate attempt to block her recall process. The embattled senator had obtained an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving or acting on a petition for her recall. Reacting to the development, constituents across the five local government areas of the district asserted that the court action was an admission that the recall process was gaining momentum. According to them, once intentions are not pure, mistakes become inevitable, citing what they called inconsistencies in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal arguments. In a statement released on Friday, the Kogi Central Renaissance Assembly (KCRA) accused the senator of contradicting herself by calling the recall signatures fictitious while simultaneously seeking legal protection against the process. “It is laughable that the same person who labeled the recall process a sham is now asking the court to stop INEC from verifying the petition. If she truly believes the signatures are fake, why not allow INEC to investigate and expose the alleged fraud?” the group stated. Signed by KCRA Coordinator, Adeku Joshua, and Secretary, Maleek Sule, the statement further insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan could not “force herself” on the people, stressing that her recall was inevitable. “This is nothing but a last-minute attempt to avoid embarrassment. However, we, the constituents of Kogi Central, remain resolute. The recall process will go on because we are determined to reclaim our district’s integrity,” the statement added. The group also reaffirmed its commitment to seeing the process through, arguing that Ebira people stand for integrity and would not support what they termed “unruly behavior and baseless allegations.” Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Lokoja had, on Friday, granted an interim injunction preventing INEC from receiving or acting on the recall petition, which Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed contained “fictitious signatures of purported constituents.”

Ebira indigenes have condemned, in strong terms, insinuations that the recall process against the lawmaker representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, was not endorsed by the majority of the electorate in the area. The indigenes, from across the five local governments of Kogi Central, said they had resolved to bring the embattled Senator back home, adding that the embarassment she had caused the senatorial district had, unfortunately, taken an "international dimension." This stand was taken in a statement on Thursday, jointly signed by the President and Secretary of the Kogi Central Elites Forum (KCEF), Alh. Ibrahim Abdulazeez Ibrahim and Prince Akerejola Johnson of Ogori/Magongo LGA, respectively. The constituents told Nigerians to disregard the deliberate mischief by the camp of the Kogi Central Senator suggesting that people were deceived to come out for the recall exercise. "No one is sponsoring this recall. Our people are largely united on this cause. From the history of Ebiras, you know we cannot be deceived. What she has done has been mainly propaganda. Even some of us that supported her on social media then are no longer with her. We cannot trade the integrity of the state and Nigeria for the selfish, juvenile tendencies of a Senator. "A matter as simple as not taking an assigned seat in the Senate should not be one that would warrant a "sexual harassment" national embarrassment of this nature, especially where all evidences point to blackmail. This is not who we are as Ebiras," the statement said. On the issue of INEC disclaiming the exercise, the constituents said the response was misconstrued. "INEC has no official role until after this signature collection phase. We are the ones that are doing the recall, the petitioners. We have to ensure that the required threshold is met before formally presenting it for verification. This is where INEC comes in," the indigenes noted. They urged the public to disregard any mischievous interpretation of the recall process, saying politicians would always release statements based on their leanings and selfish interests. "For us as Ebira people, we are determined to bring Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan back home. While she is at home, she may learn the rudiments of representing her constituents better. "Ordinarily, we would never have allowed anyone to intimidate our daughter if she was on her right. But in this particular instance, she disrespected the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which has clear rules and went on to introduce slants that have never been heard of in the history of the Senate. "We investigated and we know the truth. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan should come home and learn the art of law making. It is not about content creation like many people have said," the Kogi Central constituents said. Recall that the National Assembly has been hit by allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan refused to respect the Senate rules and was penalised. Signed: Alh. Ibrahim Abdulazeez Ibrahim (President) Prince Akerejola Johnson (Secretary)

Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has dismissed as deliberate mischief, claims by the Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, that his cement factory was demolished twice during the Amosun Administration. In a statement, titled, "Re-Government Demolished My Cement Factory Twice", signed by Lanre Akinwale, for Senator Ibikunle Amosun Media Office, the former Governor challenged Dangote to "avail the public of the requisite approvals for the construction of the structures he alleged were demolished." Amosun noted that his government believed that there could not be two governments in a state, and Dangote, therefore, could not operate above the law or under a different set of laws. "However, while we will wait to hear from him, we will like to state that not all Nigerians can be compromised, bullied or blackmailed. The notion that everyone has a price is an expression applicable only to people with weak foundations and questionable upbringing. "This is why some of us will continue to uphold high standards in all our undertakings, irrespective of whose ox is gored," the statement said. The former governor, however, recalled that the same Dangote had, during the commissioning of his Ibese Cement factory, "praised the Amosun Administration to high heavens for its promotion of investments in Ogun State and for facilitating the commencement of the cement factory after eight years of frustration as he then alleged by other administrations." The statement reads in full: "We have just seen a footage in which the Chairman of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, alleged that his cement factory in Itori, Ogun State, was demolished twice while Senator Ibikunle Amosun served as governor. "We assume that an average person understands how government functions through Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, with each exercising mandates on specific responsibilities, including approvals for physical development. "It is on this basis that we want to appeal to Alhaji Dangote to avail the public of the requisite approvals for the construction of the structures he alleged were demolished. "This will, at least, help the public to put the issue in proper context and for us to know what exactly his grouse is. "For us, as a government, we believed that there could not be two governments in a state, and Dangote, therefore, could not operate above the law or under a different set of laws. "It is important to note that at the commissioning of his Ibese Cement factory, Dangote praised the Amosun Administration to high heavens for its promotion of investments in Ogun State and for facilitating the commencement of the cement factory after eight years of frustration as he then alleged by other administrations. "Dangote is just one of the many going concerns in Ogun State, and the Amosun Administration is on record to have attracted over 500 companies to the state and was acknowledged by the World Bank as one of the top three states ensuring Ease-of-Doing-Business in Nigeria. "Highlighted as one of the top reforming states in 2014, which marked a significant improvement from its previous rankings, the World Bank report attributed this progress to substantial reforms across multiple indicators like Construction Permits and Property Registration. "It is also on record that during Senator Amosun’s administration, Ogun State became the "Industrial Capital" of Nigeria. Our state at the time accounted for about 75 per cent of the Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), in relation to industry in the country. This is a fact subject to verification. "This recognition was further given fillip to by former president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, when he visited Ogun State to commission multinational projects on five different occasions. "Thus, while we will not give vent to this obvious mischief as it is deliberate, we will advise Alhaji Dangote to furnish the public with details of the land acquisition with relevant planning approvals, and let us engage in a constructive conversation therefrom. "However, while we will wait to hear from him, we will like to state that not all Nigerians can be compromised, bullied or blackmailed. The notion that everyone has a price is an expression applicable only to people with weak foundations and questionable upbringing. This is why some of us will continue to uphold high standards in all our undertakings, irrespective of whose ox is gored."

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State, has called on motorists to be patient and adhere to defensive driving techniques, as the rainy season approached to avoid crashes on highways. Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Akure. Ibitoye said that it had became imperative for motorists to fix the components of their vehicles. According to him, the rainy season is gradually expected, so it will be good for all drivers to be prepared for it. “Rainy season is a special season where all the drivers are supposed to get their wipers, headlamps, air conditioners, tyres and other vehicle’s components in perfect condition. “Moreover, when you see that there is heavy downpour, it is better you park at a very safe place than to say let me continue the trip. “And when you see vehicle ms coming during the rainy, please put on your headlamps, let others see you as much as they can see others. “So, we want to also appeal to them (drivers) that they should adhere to principals of defensive driving technique during this season. “And they (motorists) should please be patient every time, they should not speed more than necessary because patience, as I use to say, is the key to save lives,” he said Ibitoye also vowed to sanction traffic offenders, and appealed to transport unions and other stakeholders to support the corps to ensure safe roads for all Nigerians. “Sincerely, our major concern is for Nigerians to parade very healthy vehicle that can take them from one point to the other safely without causing any hazard or any problem on the road. “It will ensure we can have our human resources intact that can help us live very healthy and fulfilled lives as a nation,” the sector commander said. He, therefore, called on passengers to always speak up against reckless and dangerous drivers, and not to leave their lives in the hands of a single person. “Remember that crashes kill more passengers than drivers “If you observers that your driver is driving dangerous, please, without distracting him, politely tell him to drive safely or report him at any FRSC, police or military checkpoints for cautioning,” Ibitoye said. The United States Department of State has attributed recent difficulties encountered by Nigerian visa applicants to a partial system outage, assuring that affected individuals will have their interviews rescheduled. Jennifer Johnson, Press Officer at the Office of Public and Congressional Affairs, Bureau of Consular Affairs, disclosed this while addressing concerns raised by applicants who missed their scheduled visa interviews. Johnson confirmed that while technical issues had disrupted operations, full functionality had now been restored. “The U.S. Department of State experienced a partial systems outage, which has since been resolved. All consular operations have resumed as normal. Visa applicants whose interviews were affected will be notified about rescheduling,” she stated. Last year, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria introduced a new visa appointment system to streamline the scheduling process and enhance transparency at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate in Lagos. However, the transition presented challenges for applicants, prompting reassurances from the U.S. government about improvements once the system was fully operational. While the recent outage caused further disruptions, consular services have resumed, and affected applicants can expect updates on their rescheduled appointments as efforts continue to clear the backlog. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Federal Government and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working towards resolving visa-related challenges faced by Nigerians traveling to the UAE. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this following a meeting with the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Salem Alshamsi. She acknowledged that despite the strong diplomatic ties and strategic partnerships between both nations, many Nigerians, especially tourists, have encountered difficulties in obtaining UAE visas. “Nigeria remains committed to its relationship with the UAE, and Dubai has become a preferred destination for many Nigerians,” she stated. According to her, official records indicate that around 12,000 Nigerians reside in the UAE, including professionals, students, and unskilled workers. She also highlighted that in 2015, nearly a million Nigerians visited the UAE, spending between $100 million and $150 million on visa fees alone, while overall expenditures on shopping, tourism, education, and other activities exceeded $1 billion. Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the need for a more balanced economic relationship between the two countries and noted that even high-ranking Nigerian officials had raised concerns about the visa restrictions. She also pointed out that a joint commission between Nigeria and the UAE was overdue, with the last session hosted by the UAE in 2022. Expressing gratitude to the UAE for its recent donation of relief materials to flood victims and vaccines for chickenpox patients in Nigeria, the minister stressed the importance of clear communication regarding any new visa policies. “We hope to host the next joint commission in Nigeria, where we will discuss key bilateral issues, including power and renewable energy,” she added. In response, Ambassador Alshamsi congratulated Odumegwu-Ojukwu on her appointment and praised the progress made in Nigeria-UAE relations over the past five decades. He noted that visas for government officials and private individuals had been processed in the last year and a half through an appointed agent. “We have issued more than 700 tourism visas since July 2024, and since I assumed office, there have been no visa rejections,” Alshamsi stated. He assured that the UAE remains committed to resolving the visa challenges and strengthening economic cooperation. Additionally, he revealed that both nations are working on signing new agreements, with a major one expected to be finalized ahead of the Nigerian president’s visit to the UAE in the second quarter of 2025. The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 8 for ruling on the admissibility of a judgment of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in suit number FCT/HC/CV/2574/2023 between Mr Ali Bello and Incorporated Trustees of American International School. The Defendant's Counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, had, before proceeding on cross-examination of the EFCC's third witness, Nicholas Ohehomon, from AISA, sought to tender the document, which had decided on the issue of payment of fees or refund in the ongoing case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. The Defence Counsel had also sought to tender the receipts of the recertification of the said documents. But Pinherio, SAN, who had earlier examined the witness, objected, saying that the Prosecution had not yet closed its case. He argued that the defendant could not tender documents at a time the prosecution was still proving its case, citing Section 232 of the Evidence Act. Reacting, Daudu SAN said, "My lord, the admissibility of documents in criminal or civil cases is governed strictly and exclusively by the principles of relevance to the proceedings at hand. "Once it is adjudged, we submit that the document is relevant, it becomes automatically admissible. That is what is contained in Sections 4, 5 and 6 of the Evidence Act, 2011. "The question for your lordship is, is this document relevant and admissible in line with Section 4? The answer has been provided by my learned brother silk for the prosecution. "He referred to the content of the judgment and read out a portion which says that a particular relief was refused and that the fee agreement was upheld in the same judgment." He said the public documents they sought to tender had AISA as a party and that, as far as the defendant was concerned, the witness was the sole witness of AISA in the matter. The Defence Counsel added that the objection of the prosecution was speculative because "he does not know what we want to do with the record yet." "Because he (Pinhero SAN) is not comfortable with the document does not stop its admissibility," he added. Pinherio, however, urged the court to reject the document, arguing that the Defence Counsel had not demonstrated that it comes within the ambit of Section 232 of the Evidence Act. Justice Emeka Nwite, therefore, held that a date would be given for ruling on the admissibility of the FCT High Court judgment. He adjourned the case to May 8 and 9, for ruling on the admissibility and for continuation of trial. Earlier, when trial resumed on Friday, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, asked the Registrar to give the witness, Nicholas Ohehomon, Exhibit 13P1. The witness identified the exhibit as a telex from the bank sent to the school via email by Ali Bello. The witness was also told to identify Exhibits 13P2 to 13P4 and she confirmed that they were transfers made by Forza Oil and Gas in favour of the respective children. He identified Exhibit 13P5, a telex by Whales Oil and Gas to American International School as well as others. During examination, EFCC Counsel asked the witness to tell the court in whose names four of the payment receipts were issued. He said they were issued in the names of four children of the former governor, after being prompted by the Prosecution Counsel. The Defence Counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, cut in, saying that the witness should read the names on the receipt. "My lord, he (Pinhero, SAN) is demonstrating this document. The witness cannot import or infer into the Exhibit what is not there," he stated. Meanwhile, the Defence Counsel could not proceed with his cross-examination because the Judge had to adjourn for ruling on the admissibility of an earlier judgment of the FCT High Court on the issue of payments of school fees.

Case adjourned to May 7 (tomorrow) The Federal High Court, in Abuja, on Thursday, adjourned the alleged money laundering case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to March 7, 2025 (tomorrow) for continuation of trial. When the matter was called on Thursday, Counsel for the EFCC, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, called its witness on subpoena, Williams Abimbola. Abimbola, a Compliant Officer with the United Bank for Africa Plc, confirmed to the court that a further subpoena was served on the bank. Justice Emeka Nwite admitted the subpoena and marked it 'Exhibit 7'. The suboeana, according to the prosecution, requested for the production of the statement of account of one Maselina Njoku, from 1st January, 2019 to 31st December, 2020. The witness confirmed that it was the request from the bank and added that a certificate of compliance was also issued. The witness confirmed 10 withdrawals in favour of Abdulsalam Hudu, in the sum of N10 million each on December 12, 2018. She said the withdrawals were done with cheques and presented across the counter. The witness, however, confirmed, during cross-examination, that the former Governor's name did not feature in the opening and management of the said Kogi Government House Bank account. She also noted that she was not the accounts officer of the Kogi Government House account and that the account is domiciled in Lokoja, Kogi State, and not Area 3, Abuja, where she works. On cross-examination, the Defence Counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, asked the witness that, as a compliance officer, does her duty involve protecting the integrity of the bank from legal penalty, reputational damage and financial losses? "Yes," she responded. The witness was also asked to name the three signatories on the account, which she did. For Alhaji Yakubu Ismail, who was Permanent Secretary, she said, "We only have his picture on this form." Daudu SAN asked, "Now, in both the account opening documents and the statement of account from E1 to E72, does the name ‘Yahaya Bello’ appear anywhere?" "No, the name Yahaya Bello does not feature," the witness responded. The Defendant's lawyer again asked, "Please look at Exhibit 2P1-3P62. Does the name ‘Yahaya Bello’ appear anywhere in the document?" "My Lord, the name Yahaya Bello does not feature on the exhibits," the witness answered. Daudu SAN therefore closed his cross-examination. The EFCC Counsel, moved to re-examine the witness. Daudu, SAN objected, but the judge allowed him after a brief argument. Pinheiro SAN then asked the witness if she was familiar with the signature on the document. She said she signed on behalf of one Edward Bananga. But the Defendant's Counsel again objected and moved to cross-examine the witness. "My Lord, the witness initially disowned the signature, but under re-examination, the prosecution led her to admit it. Therefore, I have the right to challenge that admission and prove that her claim regarding the signature is incorrect," he said. "Cross examination is meant to prove the accuracy or veracity of the witness. I am entitled to disprove what she said. This is in the interest of justice," Daudu SAN added. He then asked the witness to read the document. Reading from the document, she said, "I Edward Bananga hereby certified and confirmed that......" 'I put it to you that You are not Edward Bananga," the Defendant's Counsel said. "I am not Edward Bananga, my lord," the witness answered. Another witness, Nicholas Ohehomon, from the American International School, was presented by the prosecution. The exhibits tendered included the school's statements of account, admission letters of the children of the defendant and payment receipts. The witness confirmed the different classes the children were admitted into. Exhibit 12P was also tendered, which was a contractual agreement for post-paid school fees for the children. The Prosecution presented a letter from the EFCC to AIS, Abuja, through the Registrar. It was marked Exhibit 18 and an account provided by the EFCC for a refund. The court, thereafter, adjourned to tomorrow, 7th March, at 10am, for continuation of trial.

No fewer than 270 students were on Wednesday matriculated into Sam Maris University (SMU) Supare-Akoko in Ondo State. The newly admitted students took Matriculation Oath at the Institution's Auditorium where prominent personalities from all walks of life graced the epoch-making ceremony. The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, while delivering the Matriculation Lecture, admonished the students to eschew licentious behaviours but horn skills that would prep their minds for greater tasks. Osigwe, in his Lecture entitled “Venturing Beyond the Usual Borders” charged the students to be exceptional by exploring new possibilities, seizing opportunities that allow for academic excellence and personal growth. He said, “The topic is based on the need to invite you to embrace a mindset that transcends traditional boundaries, challenges, conventions/status quo or old ways of thinking and doing things, and foster innovation. “Venturing beyond the usual borders is another way of doing things ‘out of the norm”. It is simply about doing things in a way that might be perceived different or unusual; or 'outside normal' or ‘further than’ or ‘away from’ the normal or usual way of doing things. “Thus, anything that is considered unusual, unorthodox, or unexpected can be considered ‘out of the norm’ or “beyond usual borders”. The quest to ‘go beyond the norm’ or to ‘venture beyond usual borders’ in the context of educational training, is to ensure that knowledge is applied in a practical, innovative, revolutionary, successful or profitable manner. “It is also about ensuring that knowledge is put beyond the usual or common things students do or apply their knowledge to. “This lecture is a call to action and responsibility, especially for our dear matriculating students. “It urges you to step beyond our comfort zones, explore new possibilities, seize opportunities that allow for academic and personal growth, embrace challenges, broaden our horizons beyond traditional expectations and redefine what is possible in our respective disciplines. “In a rapidly evolving world where change is the only constant, those who dare to push beyond limits are the ones who leave a lasting impact. It is my hope that the discourse will make a difference regarding whether many of us are able to ‘survive’ the perceived difficulty encountered in the university and real life and also build whatever career we choose to an enviable position. “Some of the best empowerments young minds can be given are knowledge, opportunities and mentorship. As the saying goes, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” “Knowledge enables them to believe in themselves and know that they can achieve a lot if they refuse to be complacent. “As you embark on this academic journey, I urge you to venture beyond the usual borders. Challenge yourself, explore new ideas, and never settle for mediocrity. “The future belongs to those who dare to push boundaries, question the status quo, and innovate. Your time at Sam Maris University is an opportunity to build the skills, networks, and mindset that will prepare you for greatness. “Take advantage of it. Seek knowledge, embrace diversity, leverage technology, and most importantly, believe in yourself. May I therefore end this paper by sharing a part of Gabrielle Thomas’ post after winning three Olympic Gold Medals in Paris. “For anyone chasing something that feels huge… do it. Keep chasing. “Do the things you know you need to do to put yourself in the best position to succeed. It is worth it. Even if things don’t work out how you envisioned, they will work out the way they were meant to.” While addressing the students, the Chairman of Board of Trustees and Visitor to the Institution, Mr. Sam T. Ologunorisa, SAN announced scholarship for the University pioneer students. The learned silk urged the beneficiaries to harness the opportunity to be receptive to teachings and equip themselves with relevant skills deeply-rooted in the Entrepreneurship Centre. “To our matriculating students, I say this to you: When I first envisioned Sam Maris University, I dreamt of creating a sanctuary of learning where knowledge would flourish, creativity would thrive, and character would be forged. “Each of you sitting here today embodies that vision. You are not just students; you are the pioneers of a legacy that we are building together. Your journey begins now, and it is filled with infinite possibilities. “Congratulation! Today marks the official beginning of your academic journey with us. You have crossed an important threshold, and as you don your caps and gowns, remember that these symbols represent not just your achievements but also your potential. “Embrace the challenges ahead, for they will shape you into the leaders of tomorrow. At Sam Maris University, we are committed to nurturing not only your intellect but also your character. Our mission is to foster an environment where curiosity is encouraged, diversity is celebrated, and integrity is paramount. “As you embark on this journey, I urge you to embody these values in all that you do. Strive for excellence, support one another, and never lose sight of the impact you can have on the world around you. “As you step into this new chapter, remember that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Engage with your peers, challenge yourselves and seize every opportunity to grow. Our faculty is here to guide you, and I encourage you to seek their wisdom and support. Collaborate, innovate, and create lasting memories - these experiences will shape not only your academic career but also your life.” “At this juncture, let me appreciate our parents who have entrusted their children to the hand of Almighty God through our University. You have made the right and best decision. Your children will fulfil their destiny, and pray that your hope and dreams for them will be more than expected by the grace of God,” Ologunorisa said. In his Address, the Vice Chancellor of SMU, Prof. Francis Gbore, reminded the students that the lessons gleaned during their stay on campus would transform their lives and careers. “This is a time to expand your mind and your skills. You have come from across the country to learn from one another and acquire skills and knowledge that will make our society a better place. “The road that leads you here has not been smooth and I am not promising you that the journey ahead will be smooth either but perseverance is key. By the grace of God Almighty, you all shall succeed. “Relationships matter. You are at the beginning of adulthood now and it is so tempting to hastily feel like you are already a full grown-up. Networking is important. But choosing your network wisely is more important. Choose your friends carefully. Friends can support you in your efforts to maximize the benefits of being here.” “Finally, school is not a scam. The essence of education is not only for certification, but it is deeply rooted in the motto of the University “Liberty, Truth, Knowledge.” You have come to Sam Maris University to know the truth which shall set you free in a world of confusion. You have started strong, make sure you see this through,” the Don said. The Registrar, Mr. David Daramola, administered the Matriculation Oath to the new students Meanwhile, the Institution had on Tuesday inaugurated its first Governing Council with His Excellency, Alh. Ali Olaganju Olanusi, former Deputy Governor of Ondo State as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman while Prof. Francis Ayodeji Gbore (Vice-Chancellor), Mr. Emmanuel Oluwabiyi, Prince (Dr) Richard Oma Ahonauruogho, SAN, Mr. Ode Okwe, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa are members. The Registrar of the University, Mr. David Sunday Daramola was named as the Secretary.

The Chairperson of Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Senator Ireti Kingibe, on Friday, told Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that all Senators are bound to follow Senate rules. Reacting to the shouting match involving Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on seating arrangement, Kingibe, while appearing on Arise TV on Friday, carpeted the Kogi Senator, saying she doesn’t follow the Senate rules. She said the three other female senators have been silent about the seating arrangement row because they don’t want to say anything negative about Natasha. “Silence is golden, especially when one of us is not following the rules, and as women, we did not want to come out publicly to say anything negative about her, and we were hoping all of this will blow over, as a lot of things do,” the Labour Party Senator said. She added, “The Senate is not a place where we are supposed to fight over trivialities like seating arrangements.” According to Kingibe, Natasha was not the only lawmaker whose seat was moved. She disclosed that other lawmakers were affected by the seating reassignment. “This is about the rules of the Senate. Others were moved several times on that day, I wasn’t there, but I gathered that several men were also moved,” she said. Kingibe admitted that the Senate is not gender-friendly, but she said the situation has improved. She said, “The truth of the matter is, yes, the Senate is not gender friendly, but it has been improving much better than when we first entered the Senate, I must say. And the truth of the matter is, when we make a fuss and draw the attention of the Senate President, he corrects it. Truly, the Senate can do better than it is doing, but there’s hardly anything that’s been done to us that’s not done to other men" . Kingibe appealed to women, saying, “I want women to know we have to follow the rules of the institution we choose to enter, and that is mostly the point of this visit here".

It was a gathering of Who-is-Who in Nigeria's medical field when experts gathered in Lagos on Monday. Venue was the prestigious Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA, Ikeja where stakeholders held a Dissemination Workshop on the Implementation Research for Intravenous Iron Use in Pregnant and Postpartum Nigerian Women (IVON-IS). The project was aimed to test strategies to strengthen routine screening for anaemia during and immediately after pregnancy and conditions necessary within the health system to deliver IV iron to pregnant and post-partum women with moderate to severe anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, which is a major concern in Sub-Saharan Africa including Nigeria, in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. The research team members included experts from the Maternal and Reproductive Health Collective (MRH) and College of Medicine, University of Lagos, led by Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. Bosede Afolabi. There were also Operations Officers from the Centre for Clinical Trials, Research and Implementation Science (cctris), Co-Investigators and Medical Officers. At the workshop were Dr. Opeyemi Akinajo, Dr. Mobolanle Balogun, Dr. Ejemai Eboreime, Dr. Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, Dr. Sijuade Sanusi, Dr. Adebola Oyeniyi, Dr. Gladys Ohiomba, Dr. Anthonia Echeruo, Dr. Yusuf Adelabu, Dr. Abimbola Bowale and Dr. Adesunmbo Odeseye. Others included Dr. Babatunde Oduola-Owoo, Pharmacist Blessing Onyemere, Mrs. Damilola Onietan and Mrs. Rachel Thompson. Registration of participants at the well-attended event was coordinated by Mrs. Temitope Audu. There were presentations on IVON-IS Project Findings and Video Testimonials. There was also an exhibition of the IVON-IS Project. The workshop was important because in 2019, global anaemia prevalence was 29.9% in women of reproductive age, 29.6% in non-pregnant women of reproductive age and 36.5% in pregnant women. The participants were told that routine anaemia screening and use of oral iron supplements for anaemia treatment during pregnancy and postpartum "is limited by poor compliance and other health system factors. Adherence to oral iron is reportedly low in Nigeria because of side effects and forgetfulness. Intravenous (IV) iron such as ferric carboxymaltose, which can be given as a single dose, might help overcome some issues relating to adherence but the possibility of implementing its use in our setting needs to be evaluated". It was also revealed that the Implementation Research for intravenous iron use in pregnant and postpartum Nigerian women (IVON-IS) commenced in 2023. It was funded by the Gates Foundation and it was conducted in six healthcare facilities in Lagos State Namely: 1. Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta Hospital, Lagos. 2. Harvey Road General Hospital, Lagos. 3. Ebute-Metta General Hospital, Lagos. 4. Akerele Primary Healthcare Centre, Lagos. 5. Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation Medical Laboratory and Maternity Centre. 6. Havana Specialist Hospital Limited, Lagos. Key stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders, at the workshop, discussed the study's findings and implications for improving anaemia care in Nigeria. The workshop featured presentations from the research team, panel discussions and interactive sessions, providing a platform for stakeholders to share their experiences, challenges and suggestions for scaling up effective interventions. The study's findings highlighted significant improvements in anaemia screening rates and IV iron administration among pregnant and postpartum women at the study’s healthcare facilities, demonstrating the potential for sustainable impact. Stakeholders also pledged to work together to implement the study's recommendations, ensuring that all pregnant and postpartum women have access to quality anaemia care. There was also the urgent need for effective treatment options beyond traditional iron tablets for anaemia in pregnant and postpartum women in Nigeria, which is affecting over 50 per cent of expectant mothers. Prof. Afolabi, the Principal Investigator of IVON-IS Research, said anaemia also "increases the risk of infections, postpartum depression, poor wound healing and cognitive impairments in newborns". She said recognising the dire consequences, IVON-IS Research emphasised the routinisation of screening for anaemia, using point-of-care tests, which deliver haemoglobin concentration results within minutes. Speaking on the prevalence of anaemia among expectant mothers, Prof. Afolabi noted that while the national average for moderate to severe cases falls between 10 per cent and 20 per cent, certain regions record higher rates, reaching up from 30 per cent to 40 per cent. “Anaemia in pregnancy is a major health concern in Nigeria, often linked to poor nutrition, malaria and inadequate prenatal care. Left untreated, it can lead to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight and increased maternal mortality,” she stated. Afolabi, who is also the Director, cctris, said the research "advocates the use of intravenous iron therapy, particularly ferric carboxymaltose, as a more effective treatment for moderate and severe anaemia", saying IVON-IS Research does not only identify effective interventions, but also focuses on integrating the treatments into Nigeria’s healthcare system. Dr Opeyemi Akinajo, a Co-Investigator at IVON-IS and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), highlighted an effective treatment for maternal anaemia, a condition, she said, was affecting 45 per cent of pregnant women in Nigeria. Another Co-Investigator on the IVON-IV project, Dr Mobolanle Balogun, highlighted the cost-effectiveness of intravenous iron therapy compared to blood transfusions, which require longer monitoring periods and are often constrained by limited blood supply.
