“We want to let the public know that our campaign organisation, as promised from onset, has continued to run a decent and issue-based campaign with zero tolerance for violence. “We, therefore, find it appalling and alarming that some desperate politicians with their known sponsors and collaborators, are planning devilish acts against a decent candidate who is only offering to use his wealth of experience and established connections in the service of our dear state to take Ogun State to greater heights.” The statement added, “Our schedule of tour was carefully selected and copies of same were sent to security agencies in advance. “We will never take the voters for granted. We want to continue to meet, talk to, and interact with Ogun voters and sell the vision and programmes of our party and candidates to the Ogun voters without intimidation, harassment or coercion.” source:http://thebiggestgists..com/ cc lalasticala

The Presidency on Sunday disowned a press statement in circulation suggesting that President Muhammadu Buharihad ordered the arrest and prosecution of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Amaju Pinnick, over alleged financial fraud. A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, gave Buhari’s position on the matter. It explained that Buhari would not jump investigation to order anybody’s arrest or prosecution. The Presidency stated, “A press release in circulation in the last 24 hours, to the effect that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the arrest and prosecution of Amaju Pinnick, the NFF Chairman, is fake news because anyone familiar with the President’s unmitigated and unshakable commitment to the due processes of the law, will not make such assumptions of the President. “The position of the President that allegations of criminal nature should be addressed only by investigation and law enforcement agencies, within the framework of the law has not changed. “It is not in the nature of President Buhari to say ‘go and arrest that man or woman’ as formed the practice in the past. “Rather, he allows all allegations of this nature to be addressed, using the mechanism of the rule of law even as law enforcement and investigation agencies should not in any way be hampered in performing their duties. “At the same time, nobody should drop names to seek to influence the course of those investigations.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/buhari-didnt-order-arrest-prosecution.html cc lalasticala

The senatorial candidate of the Action Democratic Party, Osun West, in the forthcoming general elections, Mr Dotun Babayemi, has promised to liberate the people of the area from alleged marginalisation if elected. Babayemi made the promise on Friday while concluding his visit to the people in Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State. The senatorial candidate and his team visited all the 10 LGAs in Osun West including the 110 wards where he distributed food items to the constituents. He commended the constituents for supporting a former Secretary to Osun State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, the ADP governorship candidate in the last election, and called for the same support for the party in the coming elections. Accompanied by party supporters and leaders, he said, “At every ward we have visited, I have been explaining that the essence of democracy is for all to benefit. “I appeal to you, my people; do not sell your future and that of your children for stipends in the forthcoming elections. We have resolved to liberate this senatorial district from marginalisation and with your support, we will achieve that.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/i-will-liberate-osun-west.html cc lalasticala

A National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Amina Zakari, has dismissed reports that she is a blood relation of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Peoples Democratic Party and other political groups as well as individuals had alleged that Zakari, who was, on Thursday, named by the commission as its Chairman, Advisory Committee and Presidential Election Collation Centre Committee, was a niece of Buhari. They, therefore, submitted that she was not qualified to preside over the collation of the presidential poll’s results. By virtue of her position, she will coordinate the collation of results for the February 16 presidential poll, in which Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the election, will contest the presidential ticket for a second term in office. The Presidency has however debunked the allegation that Zakari is a blood relation to the President. It also explained that the national commissioner was appointed to INEC during the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The PDP, the Inter-Party Advisory Council and several political parties had called on INEC to rescind the appointment of Zakari as the chairman of the committee on National Collation Centre. But in an interview with the BBC, which was aired on Saturday, however, Zakari, who is a former acting Chairman of INEC, said she had served as a special adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. She further stated that she was appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan as an INEC commissioner and she had done the job diligently for the last eight years. Zakari added, “I’m not his (Buhari) niece; I am not his cousin and, on this job, I was appointed since 2010 by President Jonathan. Prior to that, I was appointed as SA to President Obasanjo and I have done my work conscientiously over the years as a patriotic citizen of Nigeria. “I don’t think I should be distracted now that elections are coming. I will continue doing my work. I will continue to serve my country to the best of my ability with the best of intentions. President Muhammadu Buhari is my President as everybody else’s President. “He is not my cousin; he is not my uncle as is being claimed but I know him as my leader and the leader of the nation.” PDP, Ezekwesili, Afenifere, others demand Zakari’s removal Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, and the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili, have demanded the removal of Zakari as the Chairman, Advisory Committee and Presidential Election Collation Centre Committee of the INEC. Also, a former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Usman Alhaji, believed Zakari, who has been alleged to be a relation of President Muhammadu Buhari, should step down from INEC to give credibility to the forthcoming elections. It’s brazen attempt to ease rigging for APC, says Ezekwesili In her reaction, Ezekwesili asked the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to reverse the deployment of Zakari as the collation officer for the presidential election. In a statement on Saturday, the ACPN presidential candidate said, “The INEC chairman appears to have bowed to pressure from the Presidency.” She described Zakari’s appointment as political corruption, “considering that having a relation of the President, who is a contestant in the February 2019 presidential election, amounts to an apparent conflict-of-Interest situation.” She said such “repugnant deployment of Zakari to the collation centres suggests a brazen attempt to ease rigging for the APC’s candidate in the election.” To ensure peace and give all the candidates a level playing ground, the ACPN presidential candidate asked INEC to restore confidence in the management of the collation process by reversing the appointment of Zakari as the chairman. Ezekwesili added, “Zakari can be assigned another task farther away from tasks that can hinder electoral integrity. “Or how else can one describe this repugnant action of placing the President’s niece, Mrs Amina Zakari, at the head of the centre for collation of election results? “The President and INEC chairman should know that this extremely repugnant and provocative act of political corruption that seeks to undermine our democracy and destabilise the country shall be resisted by all patriotic Nigerians. “I caution the INEC chairman and the Presidency to reverse this shameful posting immediately and safeguard the integrity of the 2019 elections.” She’s a major threat to Nigeria’s democracy, national stability – PDP I n its own reaction, the PDP, on Saturday, said Buhari’s admittance that he had a marriage relationship with Zakari had vindicated its stance that she could not be trusted with the collation of the presidential election results. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, also alleged that Zakari had become a major identifiable threat to Nigeria’s democracy, national stability and corporate existence as a nation. According to him, now that she has been busted, Nigerians expect her to quietly resign from INEC, instead of allowing her to be allegedly used as a tool to derail the nation’s democracy and plunge it into crisis. Ologbondiyan, who is the Director, Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, challenged Buhari to also respond to the position of an elder statesman, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, who, more than two years ago, in a media interview, accused Buhari of nepotism in the nomination of Zakari, his niece, and the pushing of her appointment as a commissioner to represent his interest in INEC. He said, “It is now clear that in addition to the relationship by affinity, Buhari also has a consanguinity relationship with Zakari and has not denied that he started his early childhood in Amina Zakari’s father’s house. “President Buhari’s admittance has effectively established that the PDP has not been crying wolf on the impropriety of involving Zakari in the collation of presidential election results, let alone being appointed to head the final determination of the presidential election. “It is totally unethical and immoral for an umpire to insist on officiating a contest even when her impartiality is called to question. Even in the judiciary, judges recuse themselves in cases involving parties they have affinity with. Zakari must, therefore, recuse herself if the 2019 presidential election must be credible.” Appointment is a moral burden on Presidency, INEC – Fayose Also, Fayose has described the appointment of Zakari as a moral burden on Buhari, the APC and INEC. Fayose said the justification of the appointment by the Presidency and INEC was a further show of alleged desperation to rig the February 16 presidential election. The former governor, in a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said with the doubt being raised over the ability of Zakari to be neutral during the election, “fairness and equity demand that she should step aside from playing any role in this election.” The ex-governor added, “Even if Amina Zakari can be as impartial as she can be, nevertheless, now that Nigerians are thinking that there is real likelihood of her being biased, she should excuse herself; more so that she is not the only national commissioner in INEC.” He described the Presidency’s defence that Zakari was appointed by a PDP government as puerile and unacceptable. Fayose added, “When Amina Zakari was appointed as INEC national commissioner, President Buhari, her blood relation, was not a presidential candidate. “Certain things can be good but might not be morally right. This issue of Amina Zakari, a known blood relation of the APC presidential candidate, functioning as INEC head of collation centre, is morally wrong. “Let every political party too bring somebody to the situation room. It shouldn’t be a hidden agenda. “Therefore, the Presidency and INEC have the moral burden to prove to Nigerians that they are not in any way out to short-change them.” She must not participate in elections, says Afenifere Also, Afenifere said Zakari should not be allowed to participate in the February and March general elections. It claimed that she played an ignoble role in the governorship elections held in Osun and Ekiti states in 2018. The Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin, said this in an interview in Lagos on Friday, stressing that retaining Zakari, despite the public outcry against her nomination, meant that the commission was not ready to be transparent in the conduct of the next elections. The Afenifere spokesman said the alleged “reprehensible activities” of Zakari alone had created some credibility problem for INEC. Odumakin said, “I think the problem with Amina Zakari is that she has become a red flag. The INEC chairman said she would be in charge of the collation centre and not the election but if you look at the roles she played in the elections in Osun, Ekiti and others, you will see that she is notorious and she has become an embarrassment to the commission. She has removed a lot of credibility from INEC. “Really, Nigeria should insist that this woman should not be part of the 2019 elections. She should be removed.” In the same vein, Alhaji, the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, said INEC had shown that it was not ready to conduct free, fair and credible elections. He flayed the INEC for appointing Zakari, who he described as Buhari’s biological relation, to be in charge of the collation centre for the presidential poll. He stated, “We condemn her appointment in its entirety. This appointment shows clearly that Buhari is not ready to conduct free and fair elections. Amina Zakari should not have any business in INEC, let alone be in charge of the presidential election collation centre. “She has biological relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and a senior official of INEC. Then tell me, where is the independence of INEC? “We have seen the handwriting clearly on the wall that the 2019 elections will not be free and fair. The elections will not be free and fair because Muhammadu Buhari has become the judge in his own case. What I mean here is that his niece is presiding at the collation centre.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/im-not-buharis-niece-i-wont-resign.html cc lalasticala

The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani has called on Nigerians to reject the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, at the 2019 polls. The group’s National President, Alhaji Bello Bodejo, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday. He accused Atiku of trying to destabilise the country, using the latest Amnesty International’s report on the farmer/herders conflict in parts of the North. In the report released in December last year, titled, ‘Harvest of death: Three years of bloody clashes between farmers and herders,’ AI said the clashes claimed 3,641 lives in the past three years and accused the government of failing to bring the perpetrators to justice, an allegation the Federal Government refuted. Atiku reacted to the report, saying President Muhammadu Buhari administration had failed to protect the people. But Bodejo described Atiku’s reaction as “a naked dance in the market place.” He said, “We totally condemn the desperate vituperation of Atiku for latching on the false Amnesty International report with the hope of garnering political capital from the farmers/herders conflict.” “We call on our members and peace-loving Nigerians not only to condemn him for the naked dance in the market place but to totally reject him as a presidential candidate. “This is because his intentions are inimical to progress, development and peaceful coexistence of the country.” The Fulani socio-cultural association’s leader said former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be blamed for “foisting a shadowy character like Atiku as vice-president on the nation, and now trying desperately to bring him back as president.” He also called on traditional institutions in Atiku’s home state of Adamawa to strip him of his title as Waziri Adamawa for his alleged open hatred for Fulani pastoralists. The PDP candidate, he further alleged, had surrounded himself with “ethnic irredentists and hate-speech merchants that have been profiling the Fulani race and calling for genocide.” Bodejo called on Buhari to direct the security agencies to place Atiku under surveillance for his alleged inciting statements against the herders. “His statement as a presidential candidate is capable of destabilising the country, especially considering that he is currently surrounded by anarchists and hate-speech merchants feeding on the lucrative industry of fake news,” he stated. The association also condemned AI for releasing a “substantially false” report, which it said was written to satisfy the organisation’s paymasters and further stoke the conflict. The national president called on the Federal Government to closely monitor AI’s activities in the country, especially its sources of funding. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/2019-reject-atiku-miyetti-allah-urges.html cc lalasticala mynd44 fynestboi

Amazing facts about snakes. Slithering around for hundreds of millions of years, snakes are so old that they existed when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! Amazing Facts About the Snake There are over 3000 kinds of snakes in the world. They are present in every continent except Antarctica Snakes, like other reptiles, are cold-blooded. This means that their body temperature changes in according to the temperature of their environment, unlike warm-blooded animals whose temperature remains constant. Snakes which live in colder climates will therefore hibernate in winter as it would otherwise be too cold for them to survive Snakes cannot bite their food so in order to eat large prey, they will unhinge their jaw to swallow the food whole Snakes can open their mouths up to 150 degrees, allowing them to eat things that are 75-100% bigger than their own size. It has even been known for a snake to burst after eating prey that is too big for its stomach! Snakes such as boas and anacondas suffocate their prey by squeezing it to death Because snakes have a slow metabolism rate, they don’t have to eat as often as other animals. The King Cobra can go months without having to eat Snakes use their tongue to smell A snake’s skin does not grow with the body the same way it does in humans. Each year, snakes will shed their skins 3-6 times to allow for further growth. This process usually lasts for a few days some snakes can breathe partially through their skin allowing them to dive deep underwater There are around 700 species of venomous snakes. The venom is used for self-defence and for killing prey Rattlesnakes have a loud rattle on the end of their tail which they use if they feel threatened. Other snakes hiss when they are threatened Despite snakes often being feared, more people are killed by bees than snakes every year 70% of snake species lay eggs while the other 30% give birth to live young The Black Mamba is the fastest snake in the world and can move up to 12mph (20kmph)! The smallest snakes in the world are Brahminy blind snakes which can be as short as 2 ½ inches long. They are often mistaken for earthworms There is an island in Brazil that has up to 5 snakes per square metre! People are not allowed to go to the island as it is the home of the golden lancehead snake which is critically endangered Two-headed snakes are not just mythical creatures – they can occur on rare occasions! Often the two heads will fight each other for food despite sharing the same body Source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/amazing-facts-about-snakes.html cc lalasticala, seun, mynd44

Aisha Buhari’s brother Mahamood Halilu has said he decided to challenge Adamawa State Governor Mohammed Jibrilla’s declaration as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress in the state in court because he has incontrovertible proof that Jibrilla presented a forged secondary school certificate. He claimed his campaign organisation confirmed that the governor allegedly possesses a forged certificate and decided to go to court to stop the opposition from exploiting it to deny the APC victory in the forthcoming governorship poll in the state. Halilu, who addressed journalists in company with a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal and the Director-General of his campaign organisation Medan Fwa said, “We are not in court because we don’t love our party or its candidate (Bindow), but because of the certificate forgery scandal against him, which we have also ascertained to be true. And this is why we are in court seeking this two prayers –that the court looks into the allegations of certificate forgery against the governor and interpret the laws in our constitution against certificate forgers and disqualify him if found guilty. “What we don’t want to allow is to work relentlessly for the victory of the APC in the state only for the opposition to reclaim victory through technicalities. “We are also want the court to order the replacement of the governor as the candidate of the party for not being a fit and proper candidate.” In anticipation a favourable judgement, Halilu said he would be reviving his campaign structure which was disbanded after the primary to begin mobilisation for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and his governorship bid if the court disqualifies Bindow. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/why-i-sued-bindow-aisha-buharis-brother.html cc lalasticala seun

Jurgen Klopp still considers Manchester City to be the best team in the world, rejecting Pep Guardiola’s claim that Liverpool are the team to beat. Guardiola has said it would be “almost impossible” for City to defend their Premier League title if they drop points when Liverpool visit the Etihad on Thursday due of the strength of the league leaders. But despite Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the league campaign and their seven-point advantage at the summit, Klopp is adamant City remain the best. “The opponent, for me, is still the best team in the world. And I don’t say that to say it, I said it weeks ago,” he told a news conference on Wednesday. “It’s 100 per cent my opinion because the way they play, the things they achieved, the ability and all that stuff. Nothing changed. Only the points changed, but not the preparation for the game.” Klopp added, “I heard (Guardiola’s comments). He said: In the moment.’ Yes, with the record we had in December – I’m not sure if another team had a record like this in December, I don’t know – we are in a good moment.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/klopp-rejects-guardiolas-praise-ahead.html cc myn44, lalasticala

An attack helicopter of the Nigerian Air Force deployed in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents has gone missing in action, with fears that the aircraft had crashed at a yet-to-be-ascertained location. The NAF confirmed the missing aircraft in a release around 10.30pm on Wednesday, noting that the helicopter was lost in combat while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion at Damasak in Northern Borno State. Northern Borno is a vulnerable area where the Islamic State of West African Province fighters were attempting to overrun military bases, with attacks on Metele, Buni Gari and Baga in the latest attempted invasion on December 26 and 27, 2018. The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the combat aircraft went missing about 7:45 pm on Wednesday, adding that details of the cause of the crash were still scanty. He said, “A Nigerian Air Force helicopter was lost in combat while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion at Damasak in Northern Borno State. The mission was part of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East. “The incident occurred about 7:45 pm on January 2. Details of the cause of the crash are still scanty. AN economist, Chika Onuegbu, has said that the economic indicators in the country for 2019 were unfavourable to Nigeria, adding that the year will be very tough for the country. Onuegbu, who is the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Staff Association Committee on Petroleum Industry Bill, warned that Nigeria must change its system of fiscal federalism to be able to be free from the fear of another economic recession. Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, Onuegbu observed that the Nigerian economy was still fragile, adding that all sectors of the nation’s economy were still in recession except the oil sector. He pointed out that since the country’s survival was still dependent on the price and production level of oil, Nigeria was at risk of sliding back to full recession, adding that the 2019 budget will not be realised. “The fact remains that 2019 is going to be a very difficult year for Nigeria and not favourable to Nigerians. I pray that it should not happen. But all economic indices point to this fact. The 2019 budget will not be realised based on the available indicators. “So, things are going to be tough in 2019. Until as a country, we are ready to change our system of fiscal federalism; we are ready to really diversify and restructure our economy, we will not make progress. That is the painful reality. “As long as we continue to practise that approach, Nigeria will not grow and all the efforts at diversification will not work because you cannot say you want to get healed and you refuse to take the bitter pill that will help you get healed. “The Nigerian economy is still fragile. As a result of that, if oil price goes down or oil production goes down or both of them, then the Nigerian economy will be back to recession,” Onuegbu stated. He maintained that Nigeria came out of the last recession not because it addressed the structural problems affecting its economy, but because the country, at a point, produced more oil and sold at a higher price. Onuegbu cautioned that a system where federal, state and local governments shared oil money every month-end while the natural endowments in each state were abandoned was unacceptable and an indicator that the economy may face another round of recession. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/2019-will-be-tough-for-nigeria-economist.html cc lalasticala, myndd, seun, fynestboi

LOKOJA— A non-governmental organisation, Justice Helpline Foundation, has threatened to drag the Nigeria Police to the United Nations over what it described as constant intimidation of Senator Dino Melaye by the Police. Senator Dino Melaye Sen. Dino Melaye The Director of Litigation of the group, Ayo Jonathan, who made this known in Lokoja yesterday, cautioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris against what it termed victimisation of the senator. Buhari shunned advice to scrap Niger Delta Amnesty -Dokubo He also said it was wrong for President Muhammadu Buhari not to call the police leadership to order. His words: “In a country where several members of the ruling party were alleged to have been involved in corrupt practices, Mr. President found it convenient to protect such persons, yet the police find it convenient to harass, intimidate and infringe on peoples’ rights. “Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and the Governor Ganduje saga, are cases of corruption which Mr. President allegedly provided cover for such persons. “The laying of siege to the house of Senator Dino Melaye, the disconnection of electricity and water supply to the Senator’s residence as well as constantly firing of tear gas into the residence are wrong. “There will be severe consequences if anything happens to the Senator. “We urge the police to be more civil in its approach. We will not hesitate to drag the police to the UN if any harm befalls the senator. “Having followed the activities of the Nigeria Police, and with the unfolding event, we have every reason to be concerned about the real motive behind the new attempt to arrest Senator Dino Melaye considering the spate of strange and unresolved deaths of persons in police custody in recent past.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/ngo-to-drag-police-to-un-over-melaye.html cc lalasticala, mynd44, fynestboi, seun

The Chairman, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr Samuel Nwanosike, has said his administration has employed over 1,900 youths within the area to help in the fight against crime. Nwanosike explained that those employed would give information to security agents, adding that such information would help the police and other security agencies to arrest criminals in the area. Speaking on Monday while proposing a budget of over N4bn for the 2019 fiscal year, the council chairman explained that his administration would not take it lightly with criminals. Nwanosike, who spoke at Isiokpo, the headquarters of the local government council, warned criminals to stay away from communities in the area, adding that nobody would be spared if caught in acts of kidnapping, armed robbery and other crime. He pointed out that though the council had in the past assisted security agencies in the fight against crime, he said the campaign against kidnappers would be intensified this year. “The Ikwerre Local Government Area gave employment to over 1,900 youths to give useful information to security agencies to ensure that we have crime-free communities,” Nwanosike stated. The council chairman stated that security would take the lion’s share of the budget, while agriculture and poverty alleviation would also have their fair share from the budget. He stated that the 2019 budget would improve on the gains of last year, adding that achievements were recorded in the areas of crime fighting, agriculture, education, and job creation. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/national-id-card-angry-apprentice-tears.html cc lalasticala, mynd44, seun, fynestboi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ahead of its Friday’s meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission, has said that its ongoing seven-week strike is in the national interest. The National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who stated this in an interview in response to the call on the union to call off the strike, said nobody had the monopoly of national interest. He added that the strike would not be called off until the Federal Government acceded to the lecturers’ demands. There have been calls on ASUU to end the strike in the interest of the nation and to enable university students and the National Youth Service Corps members to work as ad hoc electoral officers during the February and March general elections. As a result of the strike, many public universities have not rounded off the 2018/2019 session, thus their final year students have not gone for the NYSC. The calls for the suspension of the strike became heightened last week when INEC raised the alarm that the face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU constituted a serious threat to the 2019 general elections. The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, had pleaded with ASUU to suspend the strike in national interest and for the sake of democracy. He had in an interview where he said the commission had convened a consultative meeting involving its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, national commissioners and ASUU leadership on January 4 (Friday) concerning the ongoing strike. According to him, the meeting would focus principally on the issue of the role and involvement of ASUU members in the 2019 general elections. Okoye said, “The national interest, the interest of our democracy and the reputation of Nigeria demand the immediate resolution of the issues that led to the strike and we so urge. It is next to impossibility for members of the NYSC to provide all the ad hoc staff needs and requirements of the commission and over 70 per cent of the ad hoc staff requirement in some states of the federation is drawn from students of federal tertiary institutions. “Hence, the lingering strike by ASUU will no doubt have serious impacts on the preparations for the conduct of the 2019 elections. We therefore call on ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly and genuinely resolve the lingering impasse that has led to uncertainty in the education sector.” But while confirming the invitation of INEC to the meeting, Ogunyemi said ASUU did not declare the strike with INEC, adding, “It is what they (INEC) will tell us that will inform our response.” He said, “Well, INEC has requested for a meeting. The INEC chairman has contacted us and we are willing to oblige them. So our own procedure is that since they have requested for a meeting, we will listen to them. It is what they will tell us that will inform our response. First of all, we didn’t declare the strike with INEC.” On the call that ASUU should end the strike in the national interest, Ogunyemi asked, “Did you know that our strike is also in the national interest because we want to produce better graduates that can serve INEC better and serve Nigeria better? We want them to have better citizens that can understand the electoral process better. We want to give quality education that would curb all electoral malpractices.” The ASUU president explained that all the goals he mentioned could only be achieved through the provision of qualitative education, which he said, informed the union’s strike. He stated, “So, it is only by insisting on the best quality of education that we can achieve all those things. Nobody has the monopoly of national interest. ASUU has national interest at heart in going on this strike. It is not about national interest sentiment. It is about what we are willing to do about our demands. “I’m sure the demand to call off the strike in the national interest cannot be the only grounds for the meeting and I don’t want to preempt the meeting. It is when we listen to INEC that we will know what to tell them. If I preempt that meeting, it will seem as if I am not a patriot.” Ogunyemi, who described ASUU members as patriots, said, “We have national interest at heart in doing what we are doing and INEC also appreciates that. We appreciate INEC as much as INEC appreciates us. We will meet them and rub minds, whatever the two parties will need to do, we shall do.” Polls: Amosun rejects deployment of soldiers in Ogun Also on the February and March general elections, the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has rejected the deployment of soldiers by the Federal Government in the state. Amosun stated this on Monday night at the New Year service held at Oke-Ilewo in Abeokuta. He said that the elections would be free of violence in the state. He also boasted that the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, Adekunle Akinlade, would defeat the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, in this year’s governorship election in the state. The governor is backing Akinlade who defected to the APM after he lost the APC ticket to Abiodun at the APC primary. Abiodun is currently battling alleged certificate forgery scandal. The governor, however, called on the people of the state to make peace their watchword as the elections approach. He stated, “Let us prove to the world that Ogun State is known for peace and a state which has produced a number of eminent personalities in the country. “Let us tell them that we don’t need the service of the military and police for the conduct of elections because we are going to comport ourselves as peaceful people. “And for the youth, don’t allow yourselves to be used as political thugs. Anybody who approaches you for such, tell him to bring out his children.” He expressed optimism that the next edition of the event would be conducted by Akinlade and he (Amosun) would be invited as a former governor of the state. Amosun said he had done his bit in adding value to governance, noting that the support he got from individuals and groups contributed to his achievements in office. The ceremony attracted a number of fun seekers who were entertained by various artistes and musicians; traditional rulers led by Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotu Gbadebo. Other notable personalities at the event included Sarafa Ishola, a former minister and Director General, Akinlade Campaign Organisation, Amosun’s wife, Olufunsho; the Head of Service, Olanrewaju Bisiriyu; Akinlade and Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi. Give us peaceful poll, fun seekers tell FG Meanwhile, fun seekers at various recreational centres in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, have urged the Federal Government to improve the economy and ensure peaceful elections in 2019. They gave the advice in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria at the popular Agodi Garden and Shoprite among other recreational outfits on Tuesday to commemorate the New Year. A father, Mr Taiwo Olusola, said the Federal Government and the National Assembly should work together to ensure timely passage of the 2019 budget. He said, “It is not good for the 2019 budget to be passed in September for example; it will surely affect the economy negatively. “Government should also try to improve the budgetary allocation to all the sectors of the economy, especially the agriculture sector to create more jobs. “Every sector of the economy should be improved at least, to the barest minimum. When these are done, people’s lives will improve and the economy will become better.” Also speaking, another fun seeker, Mr Mustapha Aliyu, urged the government to improve electricity supply and infrastructure development. He added, “Virtually no business can thrive without adequate power supply; it will reduce the use of generators which causes a lot of environmental hazards. “Government should also do its best to repair a lot of damaged roads in our society. “We thank God at least, for being alive to celebrate the season, especially for the children, things shall be better.” Also, Mrs Oyindamola Ademola, said government should make effort to prioritise peoples’ welfare. “We want leaders who will love the people, treat us equally and desist from corruption, embezzlement and other evils. I also urge fellow citizens to sit up and work harder in this New Year. We must acquire more knowledge and think of possible things we can do to better our lives. “We are very happy to see the New Year and thank God who shows us mercy and grace. “In spite of the financial issues we had last year, we went the extra mile to see that the children celebrated and have fun,” she said. One of the operators at the Shoprite’s children playground, Mr Adeshina Akinyele, also called on the government to create more jobs for youths to reduce the rate of social vices. He also urged politicians to always keep to the promises they made to the citizens during campaigns and avoid disappointing the people. “Government should give us the best this year. We must put God first, I believe when we put God first, we will have peaceful elections and peaceful society,” he said. Akinyele thanked God for another festive period, pointing out that operators made brisk business and more profit in during the yuletide. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2019/01/ASUU-talks-tough-ahead-of-friday.html cc lalasticala, mynd44, seun, fynestboi

The Federal Government budgeted N1,001,318,171 for President Muhammadu Buhari’s local and international travels in the proposed 2019 budget. The budget proposes N250,021,595 for the President’s local trips and N751,296,576 for him to travel internationally. Meanwhile, N83,974,710 was budgeted for Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s local travel, while N217,060,883 was proposed for his international trips. Under foodstuff/catering materials supplies, N98,306,492 was budgeted for the President and N50,888,218 for the Vice-President. The Federal Government also proposed N416,668,229 for the construction of the presidential wing of the State House Medical Centre out of the Presidency’s total estimate of N49, 307,859,794 in the 2019 budget proposal. Aside from this, N823,441,666 was proposed for the State House Medical Centre, including drugs and medical supplies (N208,350,424). Meanwhile, the State House also budgeted N36, 787,354 for drugs and medical supplies, and N51,821,160 for medical expenses. In the 2018 budget, the Presidency had proposed N1,030,458,453 for the State House clinic after the President’s wife, Mrs Aisha Buhari, criticised the medical centre for not having an “ordinary syringe.” In the 2017 budget, N3.2bn had also been allocated for the upgrade of the state clinic, including “the completion of ongoing work as well as procurement of drugs and other medical equipment.” The President and his deputy are also to spend over N7.5bn this year on “operations” and maintenance of office buildings, the breakdown of the 2019 budget showed. The breakdown, which The PUNCH obtained on Monday night, indicated that the entire State House was allocated N49.3bn for general services, covering capital, recurrent and overhead costs. However, the President’s office was given a dedicated vote of N10bn for the running of his office, out of which N7.5bn went for operations. To maintain presidential office buildings will cost N4.7bn this year. Similarly, the President’s direct overhead cost is N1.3bn, while his capital spending will consume another N416.6m, bringing the total figure for “operations” alone to N1.7bn. On his part, Osinbajo is to spend N591.8m on operations. Out of the figure, N448.6m goes into overhead costs, while the balance of N143.2m will be spent on capital provisions under operations. A further breakdown of the presidential budget showed that the Presidency would buy vehicles worth N607.1m this year. Aside from the N4.7bn budgeted for the maintenance of office buildings, the Presidential residential buildings will be rehabilitated with another N140.4m. The item titled ‘Refreshments/Meals’ has an allocation of N135.6m and an additional N25.6m, meaning a total N161.2m. Similarly, a provision of N65.4m was made for the animals in the State House for their “conservation.” source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2018/12/2019-budget-buhari-to-spend-n1bn-on.html

Terver Akase, the Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, tells JOHN CHARLES the anti-open grazing law protects law-abiding farmers and herders in the state Governor Samuel Ortom recently raised the alarm that herdsmen were moving into the state with their cows. Has the state relaxed the law preventing open grazing? The agenda to take over Benue State by the Fulani is still there. They have not given up. The governor’s alarm that herdsmen are planning to come back to Benue and unleash attacks on Benue people is real. However, l want to remind the Fulani herdsmen moving into Benue with their cattle that there is an existing law prohibiting open grazing in the state and anyone coming into the state should be ready to respect it. The anti-open grazing and ranching establishment law does not stop cattle owners from bringing their cattle into the state but the law stipulates that such animals should not be transported into the state by foot anymore. But Fulani herdsmen usually moved from the far North towards the Benue valley in dry season in search of grazing land. What problem do you have with that? Yes, we know that the dry season calls for the influx of the herdsmen and their cows from the far North into the Benue valley. However, our worry is the fact that the herders find it difficult to know the differences between farmlands and open fields, which is why they usually have problems with the farmers who are indigenes of this place. So, whether those herdsmen coming into the state now are from Mali or Niger, they should ask their members who are here in the state. There is a law on the ground and the law stipulates that whoever wants to ranch or rear livestock in Benue has to obtain permit. If you don’t have land in Benue, you have to contact a person who has land in Benue and seek his permission to own a ranch, through application. The application will be sent to the Ministry of Agriculture that will then transmit it to the governor for approval. We are hoping that as they come into Benue, they will respect the law that is in place, which is the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranching Establishment Law. This law does not protect only the farmers; rather, it protects both the farmers and the herders. That is, if there is any case of cattle rustling, the culprit will be apprehended, tried and prosecuted; same way with herdsmen who embark on open grazing. What do you think will improve the relationship between the Fulani and the farmers in the state? l believe if the herders respect the law that was enacted by the Benue State House of Assembly and signed on May 22, 2017, by the governor, there would be no crisis and peace will reign. Again, they must recognise the fact that Benue has the right, under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to make laws for the good governance of its people. But the herdsmen are not happy with this anti-open grazing law. What are you doing about it? It is regrettable the Fulani herdsmen have refused to recognise that Benue has the right under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to make laws that would be for the good of its people. I believe that when Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, the Fulani Nationality Movement and other groups begin to recognise that the Benue State Government has that right, we will have peace. Let me make it abundantly clear here that our people have no problem with the Fulani. By the way, the law is not an anti-Fulani law. It is a law that prohibits open grazing by cows, goats, pigs, chicken and other animals. It simply said whatever animals you want to rear, you have to ranch them. We want each Fulani to see that the law is not anti-Fulani law but if a Fulani man violates the law, the law would take its course and if any Tiv man or an ldoma man violates the law, it would take the same course as done to herders. source:https://thebiggestgists..com/2018/12/fulanis-agenda-to-take-over-benue-still.html

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed optimism that his party will win the 2019 presidential election convincingly. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Oshiomhole spoke with State House correspondents after a meeting he had with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday. The APC chairman said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party was not an option. He claimed that Nigerians are not ready to vote for the PDP again. He said, “PDP is just not an option; particularly when their candidate is not a new face; there is no basis for benefit of the doubt. “You can give benefit of the doubt to a stranger, not to someone who was at the heart; perhaps one of most powerful vice presidents we have ever had. “So, I am clear that Nigerians will not have any basis to give PDP the benefit of the doubt.” He said the PDP wanted to be in power for 60 years but were driven out after 16 years. According to him, no employer will recall an employee whose job was terminated due to gross misconduct and abuse of office. The APC national chairman recalled that the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, apologised to Nigerians but Nigerians did not accept the apology. He added, “I have not heard anybody say they have accepted the apology. People that have robbed you; they don’t apologise and say ‘allow me back to your store room.’ You don’t do that. “We are certain; continue reading here:https://thebiggestgists..com/2018/12/apcll-win-2019-presidential-election.html

The Independent National Electoral Commission has introduced an application where every Nigerian can be election observers and report live from their polling units. The app, according to INEC, would check vote buying and can be freely downloaded from the commission’s website or Google Play Store. It also has geo-referencing features which can enable the electoral body’s officials to identify wherever challenges may arise. Where challenges arise, security agencies would be alerted to take charge in any part of the country. The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Board of The Electoral Institute, Mustapha Leeky, said the app was developed to address the new challenge of vote buying which characterised the recent governorship elections in some states. Leeky disclosed these on Thursday while declaring open a three-day workshop on electoral security training in Abuja. According to him, the workshop to train security personnel was inspired by the need to ensure the 2019 election is conducted in a hitch-free manner. He said, “We have deployed something that most of you media men are paying little regards to; and that is the fact, as at today, if you go to INEC website or Google Play Store, you can download an INEC i-reporter which is something that INEC has spent a lot of money in developing. “It allows every Nigerian to be an observer and a reporter of events as it happens. This, you can download freely, and have it on your smart phones. So, you can take pictures, you can also take a short video and send it to us. “It is geo-reference, so we know exactly where that issue is taking place and we can easily draw the attention of police or other security agencies to make sure that the matter is actually addressed.” continue reading here:https://thebiggestgists..com/2018/12/inec-introduces-app-to-check-vote.html
