During the festive season, there is a need to empower people with information to ensure that they bank safely.

fraudsters take advantage of the fact that consumers receive bonuses, spend more money and are generally more relaxed because they are in holiday mode.

The festive season typically sees an increase in the use of online banking and card transactions and it urged bank clients to take note of the latest crime trends so that they do not become victims.

Although, the advent of digital technology has seen an increase in electronic banking crimes, we still urged consumers to remain aware of other modus operandi at play, such as card fraud and phishing, both of which are on the increase.

By interrupting or interfering with a bank client while he or she is transacting, cards are stolen, swopped or trapped in the ATM to be retrieved later by the fraudster.

“By covering the PIN when punching in the numbers, bank clients will be able to mitigate their risk, even if they are the unfortunate victims of card theft.

“Bank clients are urged not to accept any assistance or allow anybody to interrupt or interfere with them at ATMs while transacting,”

Although fraudsters still make use of phishing, there has been an increase in what is known as vishing, which is the telephone equivalent. A fraudster phones their victim posing as a bank official or service provider and uses social engineering skills to manipulate them into disclosing confidential information, while at the same time, leading them to believe that they are speaking to the bank or service provider. This information is then used to defraud the victim.

It advised that banks will never ask you to confirm your confidential information over the phone.

“If you receive a phone call requesting confidential or personal information, do not respond and end the call,” said Pillay.

Tips to do safe mobile banking

Protect your phone content and personal information you saved by using a PIN or password to access your phone. Do not leave your phone unlocked.

Memorise your PIN. Never write it down or share it with anyone and make sure no one can see you entering your PIN.

If you think your PIN has been compromised, change it immediately.

Do not respond to competition SMSs or MMSs.

If you receive a phone call requesting personal information, do not respond and end the call.

Never access your banking site on a public Wi-Fi network – it is not secure and your credentials could be hacked. Rather disable Wi-Fi and switch to a cellular network option.

Tips to do internet banking safely

Do not do your banking on a public or unfamiliar computers found at libraries, cyber or internet cafes and hotels.

Beware of fake anti-virus software that is offered at no charge, as it could contain malware.

Do not use unknown devices such as USB flash drives on your system, as they may transfer malware unwittingly.

Register for your bank’s cell phone notification service and receive electronic messages relating to activities or transactions on your accounts as and when they occur.

If reception on your cell phone is lost, immediately check what the problem could be, as you could have been a victim of an illegal SIM swap on your number. If confirmed, notify your bank immediately.

Inform your bank should your cell phone number change so that your cell phone notification contact number is updated on the banking system.

Remember to log off immediately when you have finished banking.

Tips to use cheques safely

Check the payee, amount in words and figures carefully for alterations.

Be on the lookout for stamps that are placed over areas that could conceal alterations.

Be suspicious if the cheque appears faded, as chemicals could have been used to remove information.

Shaky signatures could indicate that the signature was traced.

Write clearly and neatly using a non-erasable pen. The type of pen you use makes a difference. Most ballpoint and marker inks are dye based, meaning that the pigments are dissolved in the ink. But, based on ink security studies, gel pens, like the Uniball 207, uses gel ink that contains tiny particles of colour that are trapped into the paper, making cheque washing a lot more difficult.

When accepting a cheque make sure that:

It has not been altered.

It isn’t post-dated.

It is signed.

There are no dirty marks on it.

The same pen has been used throughout.

The handwriting is the same on all parts of the cheque.

When shopping online, only place orders with your card on secure websites.

Do not send e-mails that quote your card number and expiry date.

Ensure that you get your own card back after every purchase.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Saturday, restated that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election would guarantee the South-West a shot at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in 2023.

Osinbajo, who went on a house-to-house campaign in Oyo-Alaafin and held a 45-minute closed-door meeting with the Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said the 2019 presidential election mattered to the Yoruba people of the South-West because the region had a larger interest in 2023.

The vice president was accompanied to Oyo by Governor Abiola Ajimobi; the APC governorship candidate in the state, Chief Bayo Adelabu; a former Senate Leader and the APC senatorial candidate for Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Teslim Folarin, among others.

Osinbajo eulogised Oba Adeyemi for his wisdom, which, he said, was secon to none in the South-West.

He said, “My visit to Kabiyesi today is a homecoming. I have never seen an Oba with the political sagacity like the Alaafin. I know this is God-given because no university teaches that.

“Kabiyesi is a man of integrity; that’s why we are following and consulting him. Everybody here will agree with me that being a Yoruba leader is not easy. That’s why leaders like Senator Ahmed Tinubu consult him in our country.

“Yoruba have a lot to contribute to Nigeria for the 2019 elections. It is for us Yoruba; if you understand, it is for us. We are not looking at 2019, but 2023. If we don’t get it now, it may take some time again.

“We have to look forward to that; that is before us. Though there could be some challenges, but what I know about President Muhammadu Buhari is that he is an honest man. If he says he will do something, he will do it.

‘The PDP and other parties do not care about the masses. These are the people and the party (APC) that are taking care of the masses.”

The Alaafin, while welcoming the vice president and his entourage to his palace, admitted that the administration of Ajimobi restored peace to the state.

While offering prayer for the vice president, Oba Adeyemi said the visit to his palace was an important step of the Buhari/Osinbajo administration.

The vice president, who had, earlier in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, inaugurated Shared Facilities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, financed by the Bank of Industry, declared that the project was a Federal Government project in collaboration with the state government.

The shared facilities centre is for fashion, style and shea butter producers, who could not afford the cost of buying the equipment in the open market.

The Managing Director of the BOI, Mr Olukayode Pitan, lauded the project, saying shared facilities would operate as one of the National MSMEs Clinics and adopt a Public Private Partnership model to guarantee success and sustainability.

Osinbajo, who noted that small scale enterprises played significant roles in the economic growth of the nation, called on traders to support Buhari’s re-election bid to enjoy more of Tradermoni, which is meant to support small scale traders.

The US House of Representatives adjourned Friday without Congress passing a spending deal, assuring a partial government shutdown at midnight as President Donald Trump and lawmakers remain at odds over border wall funding.

Operations for several key agencies will cease in the early hours of Saturday, despite last-ditch talks that continued on Capitol Hill between White House officials and congressional leaders in both parties.

Trump is seeking $5 billion for construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico. Democrats are staunchly opposed, and the absence of an elusive deal means federal funds for dozens of agencies will lapse at midnight.

It remained unclear how long the shutdown will last. But the optics are bad, as hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be either furloughed or forced to work without pay in the run up to the Christmas holiday.

The House is due back in session at noon (1700 GMT) Saturday.

The Senate meanwhile remained open late Friday, but there were no signs yet of a breakthrough, and the chamber was quiet.

Senators told reporters that congressional leaders from both parties were negotiating behind the scenes with White House officials including Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and incoming chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

One focus of discussion was the $1.6 billion in border security funding that was a part of pending Senate legislation, number two Senate Republican John Cornyn told AFP.

But conservatives in the House would likely balk at that figure.

“There’s no agreement,” congressman Mark Meadows, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus of ultra-conservatives, told reporters as he made his way from Senate meetings to the House.

“There’s a whole lot of numbers being thrown around,” but a maximum $1.6 billion for border security “is not acceptable.”

Trump was scheduled to fly to Florida late Friday for his Christmas break, but the White House said the president postponed the trip and would remain in Washington in an effort to salvage a spending deal.

Three persons have been hospitalised at various hospitals following a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever in Plateau State

Findings by correspondent on Thursday revealed that the outbreak was first noticed at the Jos University Teaching Hospital when a patient was admitted.

It was leant that the patient, an engineer, was later taken to Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in Jos before he was eventually moved to the National Hospital in Abuja where he died.

Sources at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos told our correspondent that one of the medical personnel who treated the deceased while in Jos was among the three persons being quarantined at the teaching hospital.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kuden Kamsha, said, “We are aware of the outbreak. Three people tested positive and have been quarantined.”

Manchester United executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward has revealed why the club sacked manager, Jose Mourinho.
Recall that Mourinho was on Tuesday morning sacked by United.
According to Metro UK, Woodward told United’s players at Old Trafford training ground shortly after Mourinho’s sack that one of the reasons the club fired the Portuguese gaffer was because of the Red Devils’ current position on the Premier League table.

The report claimed that Woodward also said that Mourinho’s relationship with some of United’s most high profile players was another reason why the former Chelsea coach was sacked, adding that United board could not continue under the circumstances.
The report also claimed that the United boss did not only put the whole blame on the 55-year-old.

Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for choosing not to attend this month’s ceremony where he was given the award.

He said their decision was unfair to fellow players and voters.

Croatian captain Modric broke Messi and Ronaldo’s decade-long stranglehold on the prestigious prize last month.

He said in a newspaper interview on Saturday the pair’s absence from the gala in Paris on Dec. 3 did not make sense.

“I cannot speak about why someone didn’t turn up at an award ceremony, it’s their choice. It doesn’t make sense, does it?

“It seems these votes and awards are only significant when they win,” the Real Madrid midfielder told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.

“It’s unfair to fellow players and voters who have nominated them in the past 10 years, as well as to football and the fans. However, people will act the way they think they should.”

Juventus forward Ronaldo came second in the 2018 Ballon d’Or vote behind his old Real team-mate Modric, while Messi was fifth.

It was a ranking which met with some consternation at both the Argentine’s club FC Barcelona and in the Catalan media.

Modric lifted a third successive UEFA Champions League title with Real last season and led Croatia to a first-ever FIFA World Cup final.

But he said Ronaldo and Messi were still the best two players around, even as he added that it did not mean they should always be named best player each season.

“In my opinion, things are very simple: Ronaldo and Messi are phenomenons who have been dominant in the past 10 years or so. They’ve been in a league of their own,” Modric said.

“But we are talking about a season’s accomplishments here and I guess it means something that votes by national team coaches, managers, football legends, journalists and fellow players have produced the same results.”

The Croatian also offered the sarcastic suggestion: “If the debate is going to be about how good a particular player is, the only course of action is to award all trophies to Messi and Ronaldo until they retire and scrap the voting.”

BARCELONA are determined to deal with Ousmane Dembele’s off-pitch problems and have instructed him not to turn his phone off or leave it on silent during the night.
The French wonderkid has been in trouble with Barcelona chiefs recently for his antics, but they are now giving him strict instructions as they look to get the best out of him.

Dembele‘s struggles have been well documented; last week he was fined £90,000 for turning up two hours’ late to training and had previously arrived late for a match, skipped a team meeting and missed a training session.

But despite the disciplinary problems, the France attacker is in fine form and has the full-backing of his team-mates.

According to Marca, the club are on a mission to crack down on Dembele and want to curb his late night video-game sessions and his binge-watching of television shows.

The first step to ensuring his antics don’t interfere with his job is to ban him from turning his phone off, or putting it on silent, so that he cannot sleep through his alarm after a late night.

Barca are keen to keep the 21-year-old in the fold, rather than isolate him from the squad as he has scored eight times from 13 appearances.

His team-mates are also hoping to do all they can to help guide the young winger, as Lionel Messi even stating “we need Dembele.”

Club legend Gerard Pique has also jumped to the forward’s defence, believing that the Frenchman just needs some guidance.

The National Security Adviser, retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Mongun0, has assured that security agencies
that will be deployed for election duties in 2019 will be guided by neutrality, operational efficiency, patriotism and professionalism.

Monguno gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja at the start of a two-day “Election Security Management” workshop organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

He, however, said that in the face of threats to democratic values and sacred electoral process, security agencies would be charged to be firm and decisive.

According to him, the firmness will be in identifying, isolating and neutralising threats in the interest of national security.

The NSA added that there had been concerns within and outside the country on the capacity of law enforcement agencies deployed for election duty.

He said that such concerns bordered on synergy between the different law enforcement agencies.

He said, “This development results majorly from the wide knowledge gap of security agencies on the professional requisites for election security management in a democratic setting, a gap this training intends to fill.

“It is believed that the training will act as veritable interactive forum for perfecting the operational coordination process between the Nigeria Police Force and other complementary security agencies that will be deployed for electoral functions across the country.”

Six supporters of African Action Congress Presidential Candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged damage to campaign posters of the PDP Lagos Governorship Candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje.

The accused are: Olagokun Odunayo, 27; Bamilola Omidiyi, 31; Koolkloius Henry, 26; Danwo Olagokun, 31; Ugaju Joseph, 29, and Michael Kate, 18.

The accused, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count of conspiracy, unlawful damage and breach of the peace.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution said that the accused did criminal damage to Agbaje’s property by tearing his campaign posters on Awolowo House fence in Ikeja.

Police Inspector Raphael Donny told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 9 at 2.30a.m. on Awolowo Way, Ikeja.

Donny also said that the accused conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by tearing campaign posters of another political party and replacing them with AAC presidential campaign posters.

Defence counsel, Mr Taiwo Olawale, prayed the court to grant bail to the accused, saying that they were discharging their duties with no intention of causing breach of the peace.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsemi granted the accused bail in the sum N50, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Osunsemi ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the alleged offences contravene Sections 168, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 350 stipulates three years’ jail term for willful damage while Section 411 provides for two years’ imprisonment for conspiracy.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until February 4, for mention.
