CrimeTwo Students Shot Dead During School Protest –police by adebuk17(op): 2:02pm On Nov 16, 2018
Two students died this week after being shot during protests at a university in Democratic Republic of Congo, and a police officer has been arrested, the city’s police chief said Friday.
The students “lost their lives following injuries caused by bullets” Monday in capital Kinshasa, police chief General Sylvano Kasongo said in a statement.
The victims had attended a demonstration against a two-month strike by professors who demand that the head of the university be elected by peers.
Police cracked down on a further protest Friday, student witnesses told AFP.

Kasongo urged the students to remain calm and said those responsible for the shootings would “answer for their acts according to the law.
“The police officer who fired Monday at one of the students who died has been detained and will face a military hearing,” he said.
Higher education minister Steve Mbikayi wrote on Twitter: “Live ammunition is outlawed on university sites. I demand an exemplary punishment for the police officers responsible for firing the fatal shots.”
He added that talks between professors and the government led to an agreement Thursday concerning their dispute.
Professor Antoine Kitombole told AFP the faculty demanded enforcement of a law that allows them to elect the head of the university, “a measure that minister Mbikayi is blocking.”

CrimeNurse Admits To Killing 100 Patients by adebuk17(op): 10:22pm On Oct 30, 2018
Former nurse Niels Hoegel admitted Tuesday to killing 100 patients in his care, on the first day of his trial in the biggest serial killing case in Germany’s post-war history.

Hoegel, 41, has already spent nearly a decade in prison on a life term for other patient deaths, and is accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment.

As the proceedings opened in the northern city of Oldenburg, presiding judge Sebastian Buehrmann asked whether the charges against him were accurate. Hoegel replied quietly “yes”.

“What I have admitted took place,” he told the courtroom crowded with dozens of grieving relatives.

Buehrmann said the main aim of the trial was to establish the full scope of the murder spree that was allowed to go unchecked for years at two German hospitals.

“It is like a house with dark rooms — we want to bring light into the darkness,” he said.

After a minute of silence in the courtroom for the victims, the bearded, heavyset Hoegel listened impassively, his head lowered, as public prosecutor Daniela Schiereck-Bohlmann read out the name of each dead patient and the charges against the defendant.
– ‘Little, vulnerable mass murderer’ –

Prosecutors say at least 36 patients were killed at a hospital in Oldenburg where he worked, and about 64 more at a clinic in nearby Delmenhorst, between 2000 and 2005.

More than 130 bodies of patients who died on Hoegel’s watch have been exhumed, in a case investigators have called “unprecedented in Germany to our knowledge”.

One of the more than 100 co-plaintiffs in the trial, Christian Marbach, said it was a scandal that Hoegel had been allowed to kill with impunity for such an extended period of time without hospital authorities or law enforcement intervening.

“They had everything they needed (to stop him) — you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes,” Marbach, the grandson of one of the patients, told AFP.

Hoegel told the court he was “surprised” when a superior at the Oldenburg hospital asked him to resign in late 2002, saying he would get a positive recommendation and holiday pay if he left voluntarily.

“I felt bad, like I had been caught,” Hoegel said, adding however that he was never explicitly told why they wanted him gone.

Marbach said the defendant seemed remarkably composed as he admitted to the extraordinary list of killings.

“He looks like a little, vulnerable mass murderer.”
– 200 victims? –

Caught in 2005 while injecting an unprescribed medication into a patient in Delmenhorst, Hoegel was sentenced in 2008 to seven years in prison for attempted murder.

A second trial followed in 2014-15 under pressure from alleged victims’ families.

He was found guilty of murder and attempted murder of five other victims and given the maximum sentence of 15 years.

It was then that Hoegel confessed to his psychiatrist at least 30 more murders committed in Delmenhorst. That prompted investigators to take a closer look at suspicious deaths in Oldenburg.

Taking the stand Tuesday, Hoegel said he began taking painkillers shortly after becoming a nurse in 1999 as he felt overwhelmed by the stress of working in the intensive care unit.

“I should have quit,” he said.

Asked by the judge why he didn’t admit to the remaining murders before now, Hoegel said it was “out of shame” and because it took him a long time to face up to what he had done at the first hospital.

It was only through reading the court files and in therapy that “I started to recognise the full dimension”, he said.

Investigators say the final toll could top 200 but fear they might never know for sure because the bodies of many possible victims were cremated.

Hoegel appears to have followed a similar procedure each time, first injecting a medication that triggered cardiac arrest, followed by an often futile attempt at resuscitation.

Prosecutors say he was motivated by vanity, to show off his skills at saving human lives, and by simple “boredom”.

The choice of victim appears to have been entirely random, with their ages ranging from 34 to 96.

SportsReal Madrid To Sack Lopetegui, Appoint Conte by adebuk17(op): 12:47pm On Oct 29, 2018
Real Madrid to sack coach Julen Lopetegui after their 5-1 humiliation by arch-rivals Barcelona and to replace him with former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte , Spanish media reported on Monday.

Lopetegui’s record of four wins, two draws and four defeats has left Real Madrid languishing ninth in the La Liga standings, seven points behind leaders Barca.

The 52-year-old Lopetegui was sacked by Spain on the eve of this year’s World Cup after it emerged he had accepted the position at the Bernabeu.

Lopetegui has made the worst start by any Real Madrid coach in the last 70 years.

Club President Florentino Perez is set to wield the axe after they were comprehensively outclassed by Barca on Sunday.

Lopetegui’s situation has drawn sympathy from the media, with sports daily Marca’s front page reading “It is not only Julen’s fault”.

AS editor Alfredo Relano criticised the club for failing to replace “the 50 goals a season that Madrid are currently missing in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo”.

Following a summer of courting Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham, media reported that Perez has shifted his attention to Conte, who was still employed by Chelsea when Lopetegui was appointed.

The Italian, who won the Premier League in his first season with Chelsea after winning three successive Serie A titles with Juventus, was fired by the London club in July.

Reserve team coach Santiago Solari is likely to take charge of the team for the midweek Copa del Rey meeting with Melilla.

Conte will take charge for Saturday’s home La Liga game against Valladolid, Spanish media reported.

PoliticsPolice Killing Of Anita Akapson, Indefensible by adebuk17(op): 7:14am On Oct 26, 2018
Lamentably, police brutality has continued to make waves across the country. In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, callous police officers shed innocent blood for the umpteenth time last week when they dispatched Anita Akapson, 31, to her untimely grave in controversial circumstances. As is their stock in trade, police authorities instantly leapt to the defence of their officers. However, nothing justifies the police killing of the defenceless Akapson and others like her. For this reason, the officers responsible for her death must atone for it and the family compensated.
Initially, the police claimed that Akapson, who had just returned to Nigeria after studying for a degree overseas, was killed in a case of mistaken identity. A blithe statement by Force Headquarters said that an officer shot her because he thought she was an armed robber escaping from the scene of a crime. This is laughable. The police do not need to shoot at unarmed persons to make a point.
Since the era of military rule, the police have imbibed draconian tactics in their operations. They intimidate, raid houses, bus stops and relaxation joints; lock up, torture, frame innocents, and shoot indiscriminately. Since October 8, a Lagos-based politician, Abayomi Sofumade, has been receiving treatment after he was allegedly shot in the leg by a police officer in Ikorodu for daring to intervene in a minor dispute between the police and a commercial motorcyclist. This is an abuse of firearms. If the police authorities are desirous of eradicating such, this officer and his accomplices must be punished. The defence of the police was, however, disputed hotly by the deceased’s family. In a petition, the family of Akapson, who was said to be the daughter of a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, alleged that she “was trailed, targeted, intercepted, her vehicle brushed, blocked and shot at close range by a police officer at Katampe District, Abuja.” This is a weighty claim, but considering the antecedents of the Nigeria Police, nothing can be put past them.
Unfortunately, the political will to do so is absent. On a daily basis, distressing reports of assault, illegal arrests, detention, brutality and extra-judicial killings reverberate in the media. In Abuja, where the Akapson incident occurred, a killer cop shot dead a National Youth Service Corps member, Linda Igwetu, in July. The incident occurred on the eve of her discharge from service. She had gone out with her colleagues to celebrate that epoch in her life when she was murdered. Another victim is Tunde Adeparusi, who was shot in July on his way to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. A few months after the incident, he alleged that no disciplinary action had been taken against the officers, who claimed they were chasing robbers when they shot him.
Similarly, a trader, Basirat Akinmushire, died in police custody in Lagos last month. She was arrested last September in Isolo for allegedly aiding robbers by keeping their guns. Her family, through an NGO, the Network for Police Reforms in Nigeria, petitioned the Police Service Commission, alleging that the 54-year-old woman was murdered extra-judicially.
It is clear therefore that the police have scant regard for human life. A while ago, the Divisional Police Officer attached to the Pen Cinema Police Station, Lagos, Segun Fabunmi, shot dead Ademola Daramola, as he played football on the streets in Ogba during the 2012 petrol subsidy protests that rocked Lagos. In another headline case, officers slaughtered six traders in Abuja in 2005. When the uproar over the Apo Six refused to die down, the government paid compensation to the families and arraigned six officers.
A report by a human rights body, the Civil Liberties Organisation, said 30 cases of culpable homicide arising from the reckless use of firearms by the police occurred in 2004. Between August 2015 and February 2016, the Intersociety for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, the Centre for Human Rights and Peace Advocacy and the Forum for Justice jointly estimated that over 155 Nigerians were killed extrajudicially by the police, and about 500 others maimed or detained without trial.
These violations and abuses are an aberration in a democracy, evidence that Nigeria’s democracy is weak. In contrast, the Australian Institute of Criminology says only one person was fatally shot in 2012/13 by the police. In Australia, every police shooting is subject to a mandatory coroner’s inquest. In Denmark, because of stringent engagement rules, no life was lost to police shooting in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2005. In Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany, police often go throughout a whole year without a shooting. The result is low fatalities from police operations.
But here, the police believe that they can get away with any abuse in the course of duty. To curb this primitive orientation, the police must be reformed to be accountable. With forensics, commissioners of police should institute a process to monitor the use of official firearms. The CPs should investigate cases of abuse and illegal detentions.
Complaint desks at police stations should be properly staffed and those whose rights are violated should litigate. Officers should be equipped with gadgets to record their interactions with the public, while the use of arms in civil cases should be stopped.

PoliticsSecondus To EU: PDP Has No Confidence In INEC Yet by adebuk17(op): 1:32pm On Oct 25, 2018
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, says the party does not have confidence in the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Rather than reducing, he said that the lack of confidence in the commission was getting deeper.
Speaking when he received a delegation of the European Union Election Exploration Mission to Nigeria led by Niclay Paus, who visited him in Abuja on Wednesday, Secondus said that intelligence available to the party allegedly showed that the ruling All Progressives Congress had concluded arrangements with INEC to manipulate the electoral process.

Secondus said that what happened during the governorship election in Osun State in September merely underscored the party’s fears that INEC was not ready to be neutral in 2019.

He said that the party was happy that the alleged main agent of the APC in the commission, who he also said was a relation of the President, Amina Zakari, was redeployed from the Operations Department.

However, he said the PDP would want her to resign, adding that her continued stay in office would be detrimental to the peaceful conduct of the elections.

He said, “When we eschewed violence after the electoral theft in Osun State and decided to exercise our right to peaceful protest, the Inspector General of Police directed his personnel to tear-gas us notwithstanding the personalities involved in the protest.

“Such personalities included the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, five state governors, myself, members of the National Working Committee and other critical leaders of the party.

“Our fear is strong that the APC and the administration are not favourably disposed to a peaceful 2019 general elections and we based our position on the multiplicity of induced crises across the country.
“With all the unprecedented bloodletting in the country, the President is not engaging the people and a select group operating as a cabal has hijacked the system.”

Secondus urged international partners of Nigeria, especially the European Union and the United States of America to bring their influence to bear on the INEC to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

He also asked them to show more than passing interests in the activities of security agencies particularly the Police.

Politics'I Just Happen To Believe In The Capacity And Will Of President Buhari' - Obasan by adebuk17(op): 1:46pm On Oct 24, 2018
A few days after his father publicly declared his support for PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Olujonwo, the son of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo officially joined the President Buhari campaign organization,

In a recent Interview with Punch, Olajuwon said, 'I joined the APC long before the PDP was reconstituted and before Alhaji Atiku emerged as its standard bearer. So, there is no relationship between my APC membership and my father’s forgiveness of his former vice president'.

I am a proud member of the APC because I am progressive by instinct and ideology and because I believe in the progressive instincts of those who lead our party.

I believe that our nation is better served by a politics that is progressive, that is one that works for the progress of all citizens and not merely for the interests of a few in power. President Buhari, like my father, is a man of great conviction. He loves his country and he is committed to reshaping it for the future.

He is a man of great humour too, by the way. He is a man l truly value and l have highest regard for him because he is a strong man of high and uncommon integrity, doesn’t betray and very reliable. He is very passionate and sincere about providing for the general good of all for long term benefits.

I just happen to believe in the capacity and will of President Buhari, Vice President (Yemi) Osinbajo and the leaders of our party to reposition and transform our country for concrete greatness which will lead to enduring and lasting legacy of a great and better life for everyone in the future. It is no more than that.

See more more excerpts from the interview below...

Does being the child of ex-President Obasanjo put any burden on you in terms of societal expectations?

None! I don’t indulge in societal expectations. I prefer to spend my time building a life and a career brick by brick, like every other Nigerian.

Would you have wished your father is anything else but a soldier?

Absolutely not! I am very proud of my father’s walks. I love the Army. It is the one constant source of pride to our nation. It has been our one constant bulwark against great insecurity and disintegration. It is the Army that continues to bear the brunt of the war against terror and militancy. When you and I are lying asleep at night or going about our business in the daytime, it is our Army that keeps Boko Haram and other forces of disintegration from disturbing our peace and security. I have the highest regard for our forces both the military and the Police Force and their incredible accomplishments with limited resources. I am grateful that my father got the chance to serve that great institution to the highest level.

What do you think he wants to be remembered for?

My father does not indulge in such things. He is too busy getting the day’s job done to worry about how he will be remembered. History will do its own bidding.

What values did you learn from him?

Conviction above popularity; hard work above showmanship; people above self; nation above everything else.

How does his name open doors for you when people know you are his child?

My father taught us to feather our own wings and not to ride on his coat tails. It is the way we all are today. We each work very hard in our respective fields. We do not live on his undeniable big name.

Still, I consider it a great honour to have been sired by one of Africa’s most convicted, most committed, most earnest advocates. So, yes, I am mightily proud of my dad.

Does he have preference for any type of music?

My father is a dyed-in-the-wool Egba man. Put any Egba tune on and he gets footloose. But don’t be fooled, he is the most savvy music mind. From jazz to funk, highlife to juju, my father will floor you chord by chord. He is a greater lover of Ebenezer Obey, but his music ears are never far from the likes of James Brown. My dad is black and proud – and he will turn up any day to claim that truth.

Your father undoubtedly has a good sense of humour. Does he share jokes with you?

My father is the most humorous man you have ever met. He is self-deprecating, quickwitted and genuinely funny. Because he has no hang ups, no vanity, he easily laughs at himself. It makes him great fun to be around.

How close are you to your father?

He is my best friend; my truest confidant. I am his private handbag and I love and respect him very much.

CrimeTeacher Films Sex Tape With Male Student Inside Classroom by adebuk17(op): 7:37pm On Oct 22, 2018
A Louisiana teacher is accused of filming a sex tape with one of her male students inside the classroom while other students were attending the school's pep rally.

Constance Robertson, a 25-year-old substitute teacher at Port Barre High School in Louisiana, had sex with a teenage boy in her classroom and they filmed it.

The video of the incident was discovered by school administrators, after the 16-year-old student, who recorded the incident on his mobile phone shared it with other students.

The school authorities called the police and after they arrived and looked at the contents of the boy's phone, they found evidence that led to the teacher's arrest. She was then charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Robertson told police she thought the student was 18 at the time she agreed to meet with him in her classroom during the pep rally, Port Barre Police Chief Deon Boudreaux said.

St. Landry Parish Schools officials learned of the allegations Thursday and have since relieved Robertson of her duties as a substitute. More evidence was later recovered on her phone but police did not elaborate on what was found.

The crossdresser advised women not to go to every party they are invited to just because they are desperate to find their dream men. He advised them to stay classy and attend only certain parties.

According to him, attending every party in town will make men see their desperation and exploit it. This will end up attracting only "f*** boys" who see them as "f*** mates" and will only end up passing them around.

He also added that he doesn't understand why a woman will attend a party she isn't getting funds from.

CrimeBlame Military For Lopsided Political Structure -akande by adebuk17(op): 1:40pm On Oct 21, 2018
Successive military governments in the country between 1966 and 1999 were the architects of the current lopsided political structure in the country, former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, said yesterday.
Akande in a lecture “Devolution of Powers and National Restructuring” he delivered at the APC-USA Second Annual Convention in Washington DC, United States of America, said the various military regimes created states and local governments solely for selfish reasons rather than through any scientific political reasoning.
The effects of those decisions on the country and the citizens now necessitate a restructuring,he said.
The former Osun State governor said the military might have inequitably created more local governments per population per state in the North than in the South, thus giving the North an unfair advantage in revenue allocation from the national treasury.
Akande, who is also a former governor of Osun State, said that the restructuring being canvassed would ensure “equitable rearrangement and redistribution of the existing states and local governments per population within the various ethnic nationalities.”
The former APC chairman, however, admitted it would be politically unwise to define the word equitable in such a way that it would be easy to convince those enjoying the unfair advantage at present to surrender such.
The former APC chairman also said constitutional amendments or not, Nigerians have begun to see themselves as belonging to geo-political zones-Northwest, Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast and South-south.
He said the Southwest, on its own, has evenmoved ahead to create a Development Agenda Commission for Western Nigeria (DAWN) to conduct research to generate advisory information for the benefit of the each of the South-west state governments on integrated development programmes.
According to him, as a first step, the people of these Southwestern states are trying to key into the APC to back up the possibility of their governments to speak with one political voice, using one manifesto under one political party.
He recommended this initiative to other geo-political zones, saying it is an experiment worthy of encouragement and emulation for the strengthening of a federal political attitude towards physical and social development within each zone.

Politics'it Is Possible For US To Lift Visa Ban On Atiku Any Time' - Campaign Spokespers by adebuk17(op): 11:31am On Oct 21, 2018
in a recent interview with Punch, the spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential campaign organization, Segun Showunmi, says the ban on Atiku's US visa can be revoked anytime soon.

Showunmi said this while responding to a question on whether Atiku's performance might be hindered by the visa ban placed on him if he emerges the winner of the February 14th 2019 presidential election.

In his response, Showunmi said as much as the visa is important, Nigeria needs a president that would not be globetrotting but would stay home to fix the problems for which he was elected.

''All nations are sovereign entity. Each of the entity has to jealously guard its sovereignty. Within that broad concept, nations have the right to determine their own visa rules – how to give out visa, who should be given and who should not have it. Some of the reasons for such action are really, never made clear. Each country has its own administrative policy of visa issuance. We are the biggest black nation in the world. We should not insist that the evaluation of our own leaders should be based on a subjective issue around visa. One of the bigger economies of the world now is India. For one reason or the other, their Prime Minister, at one point or the other, had some administrative restrictions on his visit to America for a while. But when he became the Prime Minister of his country, he had visited America a couple of times. For all you know, this (Atiku visa’s) restriction may be removed even tomorrow. It does not mean that Atiku has never been to America before or he cannot visit America in the future. We even need a Nigerian President that would stay at home and work for Nigerians, not a globetrotter, who will be travelling from one country to the other when there are lots of issues that need his attention at home'' he said
