This the time the Nigerian Labor congress should stand and fight for the ordinary Nigerian worker. The situation in the country is not a news anymore. The fuel crises that is biting the Nigerian worker that have to pay ambiguous amount to work every day or will queue to buy fuel at the rate of N180 per liter. The need also to pay outrageous amount for power (light) that they don’t use.
Salaries are not being increased, the ordinary Nigerian worker is suffering and they spend extremely more to get to their place of work.
This is the time for the Nigerian Labor congress (NLC) to stand united and fight for the betterness of the Nigerian worker. If need be, let the Nigerian workers go on strike to allow the Government find common ground with the so called cabals in the nation.
Help the Nigerian People.

Politics / Re: New Electricity Tariff: NLC, TUC Spit Fire, Vow To Shutdown Discos by adedoyinbadmus: 10:22pm On Jan 29, 2016
lalastica... FP please...

OKDnigeria:
Organised Labour on Friday cautioned the federal
government against implementing the new
electricity tariff, to avoid industrial crisis in the
country.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union
Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Electricity
Consumer Protection Forum gave the warning at a
stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos.

Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, said that labour
would mobilse workers and civil society groups to
protest and picket all the electricity distribution
companies should the federal government
implement the tariff as scheduled on February 1.

Wabba described the 40 to 45 per cent increase as
exploitative and illegal, and urged Nigerians to
reject it.

“We reject the tariff increase, based on the fact that
due process was not followed according to the
law. Organised labour and civil society groups
were not consulted,” he said.

“There has also not been a significant
improvement in the power supply situation since it
was privatized.”

He also said DISCOs had promised to provide pre-
paid meters for its consumers within 18 months,
but had not met the expectations of the people.

“The DISCOs promised to give Nigerians meters in
18 months, but they failed. This is corruption and
it is ripping Nigerians off their money,” he said.

Wabba said the increase in electricity tariff was not
right because there was already a court injunction
before Muhammed Idris, a justice of the federal
high court, Lagos.

According to him, the case is between Toluwani
Yemi-Adebiyi, a lawyer, versus the Nigeria
Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and
others, that there will be no increment until the
determination of the substantive suit.

“The increment negates the present biting and
prevailing economic situation and will further
impoverish the people,” Wabba said.

He urged the government to halt the
implementation of the new tariff, as well as audit
the DISCOs since they have fully paid the
privatisation money.

Also speaking, Bobboi Kaigama, TUC President,
urged NERC not to implement the new tariff until
there was a substantive improvement in the
electricity supply situation.

“If by February 1, the federal government
implements the policy, we will shut down all
DISCOs.

There should be an increase indicated in service
delivery, before the proposed new tariff,” he said.
In his remarks, Adeola Samuel-Ilori, the
coordinator, Consumer Protection Forum, said the
organisation had engaged distribution companies
several times on the issue of estimated billing
without result.

Samuel-Ilori said it was regrettable that estimated
billing was passed by the national assembly and it
had become statutory.

He, however, said that if the DISCOs were able to
meter all Nigerians within the 18 months gestation
period, the problem of estimated billing would have
been solved.

Yemi-Adebiyi, who represented consumers at the
meeting, said unless Nigerians were provided with
meters within the 18 months’ time frame, any
increase would be illegal.

He said anybody that circumvents the court order
would be jailed.

Transportation in Lagos took a new look during the administration of the then governor Babatunde Fashola now Minister of works. The BRT’s introduction was a blessing to the people of Lagos as it helped in the new look of transportation in Lagos state. One of these new initiative was the LAGBUS. The LAGBUS started operations on the 17th of February 2007. LAGBUS was created out of the experience of Lagos state over the years to assist in alleviating the transportation issues in the state. With over 500 buses and 40 routes currently in operation, it has been a success to the people of the state so far.
My experience in the BRT bus recently, has made me to think otherwise as the supposed new look of transformation of transport in the state is gradually degrading. I am sure many Lagosians have one way or the other boarded the BRT bus and as experienced same. The bus now is overcrowded as people now stand in the bus thereby pushing, rubbing and suffocating each other. The worst of all is that BRT now is of no difference to the MOLUE” as it now allows passengers carry plenty of loads. I was in one and the bus was filled with rotten fish smell and so.
The drivers also are very rough and not cultured. Guess the management of this Modern transport should give adequate training and teach them how to conduct themselves.
Share your experience in a LAGBUS.

Education / Re: Why You Must Avoid Carryovers At All Cost As An Undergraduate by adedoyinbadmus: 8:54pm On Jan 21, 2016
nice write up. afterall pls dont work in an indian company. you can check https://www.nairaland.com/2880649/plight-nigeria-workers-nlc
Dapromzy333:
Carry overs in the university system is normal; it basically means a student has an unfinished business. A student can only carry over a course when he or she scores 39 downward in both C.A and exam (over 100).

Carry overs are not in all cases a real reflection of how intelligent or not intelligent a student is, rather it's a reflection of how unserious, unsmart (if that word exist), unchecked and uninterested a student is.

I have seen highly intelligent students have numerous carry overs and relatively dull students pass through without carry overs. Such is life, that's why a coin is two sided. Carry over can also be a result of unfortunate and unlucky incidents, such as missing scripts, lecturer's attitude towards marking your script, or even a student's handwriting (that's right).

I have once been a victim of an unlucky situation. I was not around Kogi State when an assignment worth 20 marks was been submitted, when I heard about it I quickly rushed back to school from Lagos to get mine submitted. Unluckily for me, the lecturer in charge of the course is very strict and sent me out of his office. I thought to myself," I still have 80 marks to fight for so why panic".

This lecturer is the kind that barely comes to class, but he gave us a material to read ahead of his exam. For most part of Monday evenings we'll wait in class expecting him to come to class but he never does. On the day I decided I wasn't going to wait in class for him, he showed up in class and seeing how scanty the class was he decided to conduct test with the little number of students in class.

The test was for 20 marks and I missed it, making it 40 marks missed already which ruled me out of contention to score an A. Words can't describe how devastated I was during this period, my worst fear of carrying over a course is lurking around me. I tried bottling my sadness and fear until the lecturer announced that marks will deducted for every undotted Is and uncrossed Ts in his exam, he was basically asking for a perfectly written error free exam which looked impossible under the sort of pressure we were in.

I prayed to God about the situation, focused a little bit more on that course than the others, did a whole lot of library work and research and when the exam came around I completely smashed it, narrowly escaping a carryover (which many of my mates had) that would have completely changed the dynamics of my academics.

Am still grateful to God till today, who knows what it might have been....

Reasons why you must completely avoid carry overs:

-It brings you down;
A) Academically: having carry-over means you have F (0) in that course. It’s bad, it’s really bad. Having an E(2) or a D(4) is far better than having a carryover. It means you just scored 0 after studying a course for a semester and it will definitely reflect on your result.

B) Psychologically: having a carryover affects the psyche of a student. It’s that evil. You don't feel whole again, you won't feel yourself among your peers anymore; you'll feel devastated, less intelligent, less smart and so on. Carry overs inflict serious psychological damage on the bearer. It brings your thinking and psyche to the lowest minimum.

C) Physically: keeping tabs with your main courses is physically tasking enough, add carry overs to that and you'll barely sleep at night. You have to meet up with the time table of your main courses, then meet up with the schedule of your carry over courses, that's so physically demanding, it’s almost like punishment.

-It's hard to recover: even though its technically possible to recover from the evils of carry overs and get your academics back on track, it's extremely difficult and take so much determination and hard work.

-The odds aren't favourable: the odds of you graduating with a great result or a good result shifts every time you carry over a course. Imagine doing a carry-over course in place of an easy to pass elective course...

- It leads to self-esteem issues: when you are writing a carryover paper with guys that are below you, it’s a hard hit on your esteem and confidence level. You certainly won't be the most confident person on campus, in fact you'll be the least confident, if you're not then its either you're shameless, delusional, dull or completely out of touch.

- It’s a bad experience all together: the demanding schedule, the insult by lecturers, the embarrassment of writing a carry-over exam with your "juniors"...it’s a bad experience all together.

How To Avoid A Carry Over:

-Never joke with your Continuous Assessment C.A

-Always be around class and get adequately informed

-Serious studying: studying isn't every one's bread and butter, not everyone enjoys reading and reading, it’s not sweet at all, but you got to do it. That's the way. Use the library to research helpful information as much as you can.

-Do your calculations: your GPA and stuffs

-Always add to what you know

-Always do the conventional first: do what's required of you in test or an exam first, and then spice it up with the result of your research to the lecturers delight.

-Be strong physically and psychologically: in KSU only the strong will survive

-Use your time and work with schedule

-And finally and most importantly...Know your God...

Crime / Re: NLC, Nigerian Workers And Indian Companies Dilemma by adedoyinbadmus: 8:42pm On Jan 21, 2016
evidence of the supposed meeting with the NLC members as been attached for further view.
adedoyinbadmus:
I will like this to go viral so as to get the attention of the President, the Minister of Labour and the inept leaders of the Nigerians Labour Congress. Kindly move to front page.
It is with a heavy heart and rile arising from my disappointment in a failed union called NIGERIAN LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC), I write this piece.
Summarily, it is my opinion that the activities and functions of our trade union is but not limited to these highlighted points briefly itemized below (culled from the NLC website);
1. Political role, using collective power to influence decisions on behalf of members and the wider society;
2. Market role, by intervention wage bargaining and thus impacting on the economy;
3. Regulatory role by setting standards in relation to jobs and terms and conditions;
4. Democratizing role, in creating industrial democracy at the workplace;
5. Service role, in promoting the intervention of members;
6. Enhancement role in helping to develop the human potential of members; and
7. Welfare role in providing assistance to particular groups.

This well written and articulated roles expressed above by the NLC is only but a mirage to the Nigerian worker as majority are yet to see this in action due largely to the gross neglect of duties and corruption prevalent in the union
I deduced the primary responsibility of the Union should be there to protect the rights and interest of the Nigerian worker but this is hardly the case. The Nigerian worker is exposed to all forms of exploitation and injustice.
The Labour union has simply failed in its duties.
This has placed the Nigerian worker in a state of hopelessness and perpetual agitation and this is a ticking time bomb and a revolution is imminent if something is not done to ameliorate this.
I know of a particular instance where the NLC was invited to mediate some dispute between Nigerian workers and their Indian employers in one of these Indian owned establishment (MSTORE INVESTMENT LIMITED No 54, Adeniyi Jones, Beside Zenith bank, Ikeja, Lagos). The company operates in different names so as to evade tax and basic responsibilities. After series of correspondence and calls, when the NLC eventually came, they met with the management, collected huge sums of money as bribes and left without any recourse to the Nigerian workers who invited them initially. This begs the question, is it Nigeria that is a failed state or the people in power disrupting the peace and unity of the Nation. It is often said, that Nigerians are the problems of other Nigerians.
The rate by which these so- called Indian, Chinese and Lebanese owned companies in the Nation keep on exploiting and using Nigerian workers in a distraught and dehumanizing manner can be said to be another form of slavery. The seemingly quietness and neglect by the Nigerian government and workers union is a great cause for concern for all. Coupled with the low level of unemployment and underemployment in the nation that has given these Firms the leeway to exploit and treat Nigerians workers and graduates like shit.
Going through different write-ups and articles on the treatment of Nigerians by these Indians and so called Lebanese (a typical example LACASERA) you will notice, they see themselves as better humans, bringing in their racist and discriminating orientation into the Nigerian work space.
This should stop before a revolution will take place and Nigerians will stand and fight for what is theirs.
I happened to have worked in one of these Indian owned company with a staff strength of over 2200 people of which over one-third of the workers are unqualified Indian ‘expatriates’ imported into the country to do jobs, Nigerians ordinarily should handle. What is baffling is that, most of these Indians in the company come into the country without requisite work permit and proper documentation, thereby violating the Constitution, yet they are mainly placed above the so called BSc/MSc graduates with adequate qualifications and work experience. Fine, there is no problem with that since it’s an Indian company the management has the right to employ and appoint people who they deem fit into positions in the company but this should not be at the detriment of Nigerian workers. The rights of workers in these so called Indian company is often being violated and trampled upon on a daily basis. Most of these injustices is in the form of; poor remuneration- graduates earning less than 50k, no leave allowance, no pension scheme, very limited health cover when available, casualization of workers, absence of job security, no increment, arbitrary sacking with no compensation whatsoever, irregular salary expatriates are paid Local and then foreign salary , no promotions, no profit sharing, maltreatment of staff and total disdain and disregard for the Nigerian Labour Law which they continually contravene again and again other unwholesome practices includes cutting of cost, tax avoidance and evasion, declaring false financial position and statements.
Nigeria failed? Or the so called NLC that is supposed to protect and help in the wellness of the conditions of workers in the country.
I want to implore the new Minister of Labour, Sen Chris Ngige, to kindly look into this, as a matter of urgency, meet with the various workers union (which have so far failed in their responsibilities) and set up a fact finding committee that will make recommendations that will (probably lead to legislations) adequately address these issues.
For the sake of the sanity of many Nigerian youth. Something must be done NOW. We cannot continue to remain slaves in our father’s land.
