Leicester City recovered from going two goals behind to beat Spartak Moscow 4-3 on matchday three of the Europa League on Wednesday evening.

There were starts for former Nigeria international Victor Moses and Leicester City’s Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

It seemed the game was slipping away from the Foxes after Spartak Moscow established a two-goal lead through ed effort from Sobolev and Larsson’s close range finish assisted by Moses, but Leicester Cuty had an outstanding ten-minute period either side of half-time which changed the complexion of the game.

Patson Daka made it 2-1 in the 45th minute, slotting home after Iheanacho chipped the ball over the Spartak defence.

The Zambia international brought the game back to parity two minutes into the second half when he converted from close range after another great assist from his Nigerian teammate.

In undoubtedly his best performance in a Leicester shirt since transferring from Red Bull Salzburg, Daka completed the turnaround in the 54th minute and got his fourth of the game at minute 78 to ensure that the Foxes were closer to their goal of three points.

In a game to remember, Sobolev grabbed the seventh goal of the game with four minutes left after he was teed up by Moses, but Brendan Rodgers team were able to get over the line.

Sports / Sport Update Victor Osimhen Does It Again, Nigerian Striker’s Late Goal Helps Na by Adejoke123(f): 9:31pm On Oct 17, 2021
A late Victor Osimhen’s towering header sealed a hardfought 1-0 for Napoli which saw them record their eight consecutive win in the Serie A this season, KikioTolunews reports.

Napoli are now the only team in Europe’s top five leagues with a 100 per cent record and reclaim first position from AC Milan as they have 24 points.

Also in action in the encounter was Osimhen’s Super Eagles teammate Ola Aina who played for 90 minutes.

It was Osimhen’s fifth goal in seven appearances so far in the Italian elite division this season.

Osimhen now has eight goals in nine games in all competitions for Napoli.

With nine minutes left in the game, Osimhen emerged the hero for Luciano Spalletti’s dominant side.

Kalidou Koulibaly’s back-heel flick sent Dries Mertens down the left, his cross was charged down, then Eljif Elmas deflected the attempted clearance for the ball to bounce up and the Nigerian hung in the air to nod past the Torino keeper.

Napoli would have scored in the 27th minute after they were awarded a penalty but Lorenzo Insigne saw his effort saved.

It was Insigne’s third miss out of five attempted penalties this season.

In the 56th minute Napoli had the ball in the net with a smart free kick routine, Mario Rui whipping the ball across the six-yard box for Di Lorenzo’s header. However, after a very long VAR check, it was ruled marginally offside.

Sports / Rohr Not Responsible For Super Eagles’ Victories – Fuludu by Adejoke123(f): 3:01pm On Oct 13, 2021
Former midfielder Edema Fuludu has questioned Gernot Rohr coaching ability, after Super Eagles unconvincing showing against Central African Republic.

Rohr came under fire from Nigeria Football fans, after Super Eagles shocking home defeat to the Wild Beasts last Thursday.

The three time African champions later avenged the defeat three days later by beating the Raoul Savouy’s side 1-0 in Douala.

Despite the Sunday’s victory, Fuludu is not convinced and insists Rohr is not responsible for the victory, but players.

“Personally, I have said it repeatedly (that) Gernot Rohr is not responsible for our victory. It is the players, who have put in so much individual and collective efforts,”

“So, it has been luck all along. For five years, he (Rohr) hasn’t been able to impact as a coach should. He has no tactics at all.

“He has just been cruising, and we don’t have a team. He just brings them (players) together, and that it is because Nigeria has quality players. It is the players’ efforts and nothing else.” Fuludutold NAN.

Fuludu earned eight caps for Nigeria between 1991-1995. He managed Warri Wolves, after retirement from active football.

Sports / Napoli Superstar Victor Osimhen Wins Serie A Award by Adejoke123(f): 9:18am On Oct 07, 2021
The performance of Victor Osimhen in the Serie A has been rewarded after the Napoli striker was named the Serie A player for the month of September.

Osimhen has been the best African player in the Serie A netting seven goals in all competitions this season for Napoli with four of them in Serie A whiles three in the UEFA Europa League.

According to the footballers association, Osimhen was named the best footballer in Serie A in September after winning more than half of the total votes.

In a statement published on the association’s website stated: “Osimhen has shown exceptional determination, transforming chaotic actions into golden opportunities, forcing the defenders to continuous physical duels, aiming for depth with an exhausting consistency.

“Very few in Serie A can defend the mix of speed and power of Osimhen. Napoli takes advantage of it even when he does not touch the ball but limits himself to lengthening the defense: his movements between central defender and full-back, or between the two central ones, are performed with such continuity and such intensity that at some point, inevitably, even the best defenders happen to give them some space, and a little space, against a player like Osimhen, is still too much space.”

Super Eagles duo of Emmanuel Dennis and Troost-Ekong tasted another defeat with Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Nigerian internationals were on from the start as Watford suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at the Elland Road.

With Oghenekaro Etebo missing due to injury, Ekong and Dennis played all 90 minutes and failed to rescue the team from defeat.

The Hornets struggled during the match to maintain a strong presence in the attacking phase of the pitch, and they were punished by Diego Llorente’s first-half tap-in.

It was their fourth defeat out of seven-game, and manager Munos Xisco said he’s disappointed with the performance he saw from the players.

“I’m disappointed with our first half because we knew our plan for the game. We can only say to keep working every day. All the points this season are important. You need a very good performance and consistent performance, or you won’t take the points.” He said.

Sports / Super Eagles Striker, Taiwo Awoniyi Makes Bundesliga Team Of The Week by Adejoke123(f): 7:29am On Oct 05, 2021
Taiwo Awoniyi makes Bundesliga Team of The Week…

Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been named in the German Bundesliga Team of The Week for matchday seven after scoring a brace in Union Berlin’s 2-1 win over Mainz on Sunday.

Awoniyi scored twice in four minutes as Union came from behind to beat 10-man Mainz at the MEWA Arena handing his high-flying side their third win of the season, taking 12 points from seven game.

In a 4-3-3 formation, the Nigerian was paired with Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Breel Embolo. There was no space for Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski who failed to score as his side suffered a 2-1 loss to Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena.

In midfield, Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, Cologne’s Ellyes Skhiri and Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz made the cut while Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro, Stuttgart’s Marc-Oliver Kempf, Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong are in defence.

Mönchengladbach’s Yann Sommer is in goal after an impressive performance in their 3-1 win over Wolfsburg.

However, Mainz 05 Sports Director, Christian Heidel, says he is disappointed his team failed to sign in-form Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, from Liverpool despite their effort to do so.

The Nigerian endured a torrid time during his loan spell at Mainz in the 2019/20 season scoring just once in 12 league appearances and was not the favoured striker by Achim Beierlorzer.

Awoniyi was on loan at Union in the 2020/21 season on loan from Liverpool but despite scoring just five goals in 22 appearances in all competition in a season plagued by injuries, the German side had seen enough of his talent as they splashed €6.5m to sign him on a permanent basis.

Despite his difficult time at the club, Heidel said they would have loved to sign the Nigerian but due to financial constraints and Liverpool’s failure to grant them a discount.

“I’ve always liked him. As you have seen, rightly, ”Heidel said about Awoniyi.

“It was on the market, but we couldn’t finance it, we talked about him, but I didn’t get a discount,” Heidel added.

Awoniyi has scored eight goals in 12 appearances across all competitions with five of them coming in the league from seven appearances while providing two assists.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers will not be able to count on the services of Nigeria internationals Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi when his side face Polish giants Legia Warsaw at the Marshall Józef Piłsudski’s Municipal Stadium on Thursday evening.

It was known beforehand that Ndidi was not available for selection after he was shown a red card in the closing minutes on matchday one against Napoli.

Rodgers has revealed that Iheanacho is not with the squad due to an issue with his traveling document.

The Northern Irishman stated at the pre-match press conference: “We’ve had an issue with Kelechi.

“His documentation coming into the country wasn’t suffice, so unfortunately he isn’t available to play, which is a shame because he would have played in the game.

“He will be unavailable for the game. The paperwork didn’t allow him into the country. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll have to look into that when we get back.”

Sports / Chukwueze Boost For Villarreal Ahead Of Manchester United Champions League Date by Adejoke123(f): 1:39pm On Sep 28, 2021
Villarreal have received a boost ahead of their Champions League match against Manchester United after attacker Samuel Chukwueze returned to training.

The Super Eagle has been out of action since May 6 when he was injured away to Arsenal in the Europa League assignment at the Emirates, a game that ended 0-0, with the Spanish outfit eventually advancing 2-1 on aggregate.

Chukwueze eventually missed the final against Manchester United, and the Super Cup loss to Champions League winners Chelsea. The 22-year-old has now missed the club’s six La Liga matches and the Group F Champions League opening match against Atalanta that ended 2-2.

However, in the video posted by the club, the attacker was seen training with teammates ahead of the Wednesday encounter. But the club’s medical department has not commented whether Chukwueze is fit enough to be involved against the Red Devils.

The Unai Emery charges will be away at Old Trafford aiming at inflicting more pain on the hosts who suffered 2-1 away to Young Boys in their initial match.

It will be a rematch of the Europa League final last season whereby Villareal won 11-10 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. In that particular fixture, Gerard Moreno had scored for the Yellow Submarines as Edinson Cavani replied for the English side.

The Red Devils are hoping to improve their attacking department and have so far failed to score in their last two matches in all competitions. In the 2020/21 campaign, Manchester United managed four wins, two draws and a loss in European competitions at Old Trafford.

For Villarreal, they remain undefeated in seven Europa League matches away. However, this season, they have not won any away match in all competitions, having managed four draws and two losses.

It is going to be a huge test for Villarreal considering the fact that their opponents are unpredictable, having won three and lost as many in their last six matches in all competitions. They have managed to hit the back of the net eight times and conceded six goals in the process.

Another Group F match will be between Young Boys and Atalanta.

Sports / Iwobi: I Can 'no Longer Make Excuses' - Nigeria Star On His Peak Period At Evert by Adejoke123(f): 11:59am On Sep 24, 2021
Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has revealed why he can no longer make excuses for himself while playing for Everton under new manager Rafael Benitez.

The 25-year-old Super Eagle has managed 199 minutes under the former Liverpool boss and has scored one goal, provided one assist in seven appearances for the Toffees so far this campaign.

It is a better display from Iwobi, who joined Everton from Arsenal in 2019, and during his first season, he struggled to nail down playing time.

“I can see the improvement under the new manager because he's vastly experienced and has worked with different players at major clubs," Iwobi said as quoted by BBC Sport Africa.

“He came in and told me the part of my game that needs improvement, and so far I can see the progress and impact. When you work under someone who's managed top players in his career, you have to listen because the gaffer has already seen things you are only just learning.”

Iwobi, who managed 15 goals in 149 games while playing for Arsenal, has admitted he will, however, need to step up his game to help keep up with the intensity of competition at the club this season.

“This is a different level with the new manager. Personally, you have to be honest with yourself and admit what part of your game must change to adapt,” Iwobi continued.

“I know the importance of having a consistent run at club level, so I have had to step up my game to compete here.”

On whether he is approaching his prime years at the right time, Iwobi said: “You are right that at 25 I can no longer make excuses for myself. Luckily, I am now working with someone who wants to bring the best out of the players at the club.

AdvertisementScroll to continue with content
“You can see the difference and his touch across the squad. Personally, I've just got to keep taking those chances, keep making those runs, and hopefully, I'll start putting them away on a regular basis.”

Iwobi began his career at Arsenal, making 149 appearances and scoring 15 goals, and winning the FA Cup in 2017 and in August 2019, he transferred to Everton for an initial £28 million fee.

He represented England up to U18 level but made his senior international debut for Nigeria in October 2015, and was part of their squads at the 2018 Fifa World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, coming out third at the latter.

As the images have gotten glossier, the pitches greener and the passes have shortened, it has become harder to relate to a bygone era of England’s top flight, even one as recent as the 1990s.

So, except for the Norwich faithful, it is easy to forget just who Ekoku was in his time as a professional footballer, and what he represented, even though only now has Alex Iwobi equalled his haul of 160 Premier League appearances.

Born in Manchester but of Nigerian parentage, Efan was something of a late bloomer by modern standards, beginning his professional career at the ripe old age of 23. After shining for Third Division Bournemouth under Harry Redknapp (who would go on to manage a number of Nigerian footballers in his career), the striker was recruited to bolster Norwich City’s Premier League title tilt, in the process becoming the first Nigerian to play in the fledgling Premier League.

Despite scoring twice in the remaining six fixtures of the campaign, the Canaries were ultimately unable to last the course, and settled for a place in the Uefa Cup.

Efan Ekoku of Norwich City

The following season saw Ekoku hit some significant firsts.

His sumptuous volley, at the end of a flowing move against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, was Norwich’s first in European competition. It set the club on its way to a memorable run to the Third Round, as they beat Bayern Munich along the way before suffering elimination at the hands of eventual winners Internazionale.

An inspired September for the pacey centre-forward continued when he notched four goals in a 5-1 away rout of Everton in the ninth game of the season.

That return – the first of its kind in a Premier League match – took his tally for the season to five, and set him on the way to his best-ever scoring season in English football, with 14.

That total may have been bettered had he not been called away by Nigeria for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in March, as he missed six matches in total; in any case, this was Ekoku at his absolute peak, and he was also a part of the Super Eagles’ squad to its first-ever World Cup in the USA that same year.

Efan Ekoku

An ill-advised move to Wimbledon following the World Cup saw Ekoku largely maintain his form, but despite scoring 18 goals over the course of his first two seasons, the sense was that he never quite fit.

Some of that was to do with the fact that, as a replacement for John Fashanu, he was hardly like-for-like. The Dons played a unique, strongly reviled brand of football, with dollops of verticality and brutality into the mix, and while Fashanu was suited to that style, Ekoku was not so much.

Minutes were harder to come by after that, and after a year of only sporadic use, he handed in a transfer request.

He eventually got his wish in 1999, moving to Switzerland to join Grasshoppers. The club was at the time managed by Roy Hodgson, who had seen Ekoku play while coaching a World XI selection during a match organized in honour of Nelson Mandela.

This marked the end of his Premier League adventure, although he would return to England following Hodgson’s sacking to play out the rest of his career.

Sports / Victor Osimhen's Brace Sends Napoli Top Of Serie A After Big Win At Sampdoria by Adejoke123(f): 10:25pm On Sep 23, 2021
Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win at Sampdoria to go top of Serie A on Thursday evening.
The scoring was opened by 21-year-old Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, a 2020 signing from Ligue 1 side Lille, after 10 minutes.

Napoli doubled their lead shortly before the whistle went for the end of the first half, and Osimhen needed just five minutes to grab his second.

Piotr Zielinski then made it four with a fizzing half-volley inside the area just before the hour for an easy win over Sampdoria, who ended the game in thirteenth place.

Napoli made it five wins out of five, moving them two points clear of last year’s champions Inter Milan.

In the day’s other game, Lazio drew 1-1 away to Torino, with Lazio in seventh and Torino in ninth.

Sports / EFL Cup: How Nigerian Players Fared For Their Clubs by Adejoke123(f): 8:57am On Sep 23, 2021
KikioTolunews round-up of the Nigeria-eligible players in action for their respective clubs in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

At the Den in London, Leicester City earned a 2-0 win over Millwall thanks to second half goals from Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho.

The RB Leipzig loanee was making his full debut for the Foxes and was joined in the starting line-up by Super Eagles duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi.

Iheanacho was involved in the build-up to the opening goal of the game as his effort was deflected into the path of Lookman, who finished into an empty net in the 50th minute.

Two minutes from time, the Foxes number 14 belted the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

The Super Eagles hopeful subbed out at minute 69 while Iheanacho and Ndidi put in a full shift.
At the Emirates Stadium London, goals from Lacazette, Smith-Rowe and Nketiah earned Arsenal a 3-0 win over League One side AFC Wimbledon, for whom Watford loanee Dapo Mebude was in action for the last 30 minutes.

Folarin Balogun entered the fray to replace Nketiah with seven minutes left on the clock.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea advanced to the next round of the competition after winning 4-3 on penalties against Aston Villa.

It finished 1-1 after ninety minutes as Cameron Archer cancelled out Timo Werner’s opener to take the game to penalties.

Three minutes before half-time, teenage midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka came off the bench to replace the injured Morgan Sanson, his elder brother CalebChukwuemeka was an unused substitute.

Sports / The Fall Of James Rodriguez: From Real Madrid To Qatar by Adejoke123(f): 5:18pm On Sep 22, 2021
Just over a year after arriving at Everton in search of a fresh start, James Rodriguez is on the move again.

A host of clubs were said to be considering the Colombia playmaker over the summer when it became clear his future lay away from Goodison Park.

Former club Porto, where he first made his name in Europe as one of football’s most sparkling teenage talents, were mentioned, as well as Italian giants AC Milan and even a move back to Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti.

None of those transfers materialised, however, and James is now preparing for gilded exile in Qatar.

And while his switch to Al Rayyan will provide ample financial riches, it is a huge step back for a man whose unique abilities should have been enough to place him firmly and irreversibly within the game’s elite.

James certainly looked the part following his reunion with former Madrid boss Ancelotti at the start of 2019-20. Eager to prove a point following his travails at the Bernabeu, he formed a dynamic attacking relationship with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and repaid Ancelotti’s faith with a string of fine performances to kick-off the season, raising hopes that the Premier League would bring out his mercurial best.

Instead, a familiar story played out: Injury and fitness problems; long, damaging, ineffective periods when he did make it onto the field; and making the headlines for his off-pitch behaviour.

And when Ancelotti’s more indulgent, laissez-faire management style was packed up and shipped back to the Spanish capital along with Carlo himself, it did not take a football visionary to see that James and his replacement, strict disciplinarian Rafa Benitez, would not be seeing eye to eye.

“He wouldn’t be a Rafa player,” former Toffees manager Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports News after James failed to engineer a way out of Everton over the summer.

They (Benitez’s players) know how to do the job, they all know how to play the system and know they have to do this and that. They spend loads of time on the training ground.

“Rodriguez is an instinctive player, wants freedom, he doesn’t want the handcuffs. He’s just not a Rafa player, that’s where the conflict lies.”

If any doubt remained over James’ plans to stay on Merseyside, they surely went up in the vape smoke he puffed out into the Ibiza air while partying on a yacht at the start of September, while his team-mates were celebrating a strong start to the Premier League season in his absence.

The playmaker had behaved in an almost identical fashion after being cut from Colombia’s Copa America plans, leading to an almost irrecuperable rift with the Cafeteros just a few short weeks before seemingly burning his Everton bridges too.

Whether it is down to bad attitude, bad luck or a combination of both, James has failed to sustain his obvious abilities and reach the heights he is capable of on a consistent basis.

To see him cash in his chips at the age of just 30 and move to Qatar is hard to take for anyone who has seen him at his best, even if the switch makes financial sense for Everton and at least gives 2014 World Cup Golden Boot winner the opportunity to play competitive football in 2021-22.

If he does return from this temporary – in theory, at least – exile, he would not be the first player by any means to play at the highest level following a stay in one of football’s lucrative backwaters. But the odds do seem to be stacked against him.

James’ Everton move was supposed to rejuvenate his stalled career and prove the early predictions of greatness were on the money; now, he looks further away and less interested in ever in fulfilling those ambitious portents.

Sports / Messi Was A Tyrant In Training – Koeman by Adejoke123(f): 4:54pm On Sep 22, 2021
The Barcelona coach revealed the general attitude of the 6 time Balon do’or winner in training and in raising the bar and setting an example for his fellow teammates.

Ronald Koeman says Lionel Messi was like “a tyrant” during training at Barcelona.

The Argentina star raised the bar at the Camp Nou club as he developed into one of the greatest to ever play the game before departing to join Paris Saint-Germain this year.

Barca coach Koeman has lifted the lid on the six-time Ballon d’Or winner’s conduct during practices with the team, revealing he would get very angry if he did not win games during the sessions.

What has been said?

“Lionel Messi has obscured everything. He was so good and he won,” he told Voetbal International.

“Of course he had good players around him, but he made the difference. Everyone seems better than they are because of him. This is not a criticism, but an observation.

“I knew how good he is, but it’s still nice to see it up close every day. Everything you would like to teach a football player, in recognising situations, in taking the ball under pressure, in ball speed, in finishing; with Messi everything is a 10. Not normal, not normal!

“When we did a finishing practice during training, there were sometimes players who started to hit easy balls, a bit of fooling around. But with Messi everything was: boom, boom, boom, boom. Never frills, everything functional. And always wanted to win everything.

“We always play a rondo before training. If the ball goes around 20 times, then the players in the middle must have an extra turn. If that happens three times in a row, the players will form two lines and the two who were in the middle then walk through and get taps on their heads and such.

“I asked Messi if it had happened to him once. ‘Yes, once,’ he said. In all those years. With him, the older players never lost an exercise against the young. It happened once and Messi was seriously angry about that for a week. Really, a tyrant.”

Sports / Mikel Threatened To Break My Legs-mark Clattenburg by Adejoke123(f): 2:12pm On Sep 20, 2021
Former referee Mark Clattenburg has revealed how the John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata incident almost cost him his career in 2012.

The English official took charge of the Premier League showdown in which Manchester United defeated Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge in October 2012.

In the ill-tempered encounter, Branislav Ivanovic, and Fernando Torres were given their marching orders.

The Football Association investigated Clattenburg after the Blues claimed he had used racist language towards African star Mikel and Spain’s Mata, but the referee was soon cleared of any misconduct.

In his autobiography ‘Whistle Blower’ as per The Daily Mail, the 46-year-old wrote that the contentious incident almost cost him his job.

“I knew to expect a tirade of abuse from Chelsea supporters, but I was not beating myself up over my performance. It was then that I heard a commotion outside the dressing-room door,” wrote Clattenburg.

“Before I get to the door it swings open, and with some force. John Obi Mikel bursts in and I can see the rage in his eyes. Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo and coach Eddie Newton are holding him back.

“Mikel is out of control; he’s trying to get at me. ‘I’m gonna break your legs!’ he shouts. “He’s swinging for me.

“I have to be clear here – and this is extremely important – at this point, there had been no mention of racism to me, either from Mikel or Di Matteo. No one had made any accusation of that nature.”

“I left Stamford Bridge in the people-carrier and as we made our way out of West London towards Heathrow, there’s a social-media notification on the screen of my phone saying: ‘BREAKING NEWS: CHELSEA ACCUSE REFEREE MARK CLATTENBURG OF RACIST COMMENTS’,” he continued.

Article continues below
“During those early hours overnight on the Sunday of the game, I realised the power of football clubs, the hold they have over the media. It was terrifying. It was the European champions against a referee – who would you believe?

“I am trapped. This could ruin my career. It could ruin my life. The fear is worse than going to prison. I am being called a racist.

“That is a real life-sentence, you don’t come back from that. Guilty until proven innocent, that is the English way.”

While the FA investigated Chelsea’s complaint, Clattenburg missed four weekends of Premier League matches.

However, he was soon cleared with the FA handing Mikel a three-match ban and fined £60,000 for threatening the referee.

Sports / VAR Disallows Two Goals From Super Eagles Stars As Leicester Falls To 2-1 Defeat by Adejoke123(f): 1:03pm On Sep 20, 2021
After blowing a two-goal lead against Napoli in the Europa League, Leicester City almost did the opposite in Sunday’s clash against Brighton & Hove but were denied by two refereeing decisions and eventually lost 2-1 at the American Express Community Stadium.

It was collective despair for The Foxes who will feel that everything was against them as a penalty converted by Neal Maupay ten minutes before half-time was contested and saw two goals disallowed, both for offside.

The Seagulls doubled the advantage through ex-Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck but Leicester City fought spectacularly in the second half to try and salvage a draw.

Jamie Vardy dispatched the ball into the net to half the deficit after a perfect cross from Tielemans in the 61st minute, with Super Eagles hopeful Ademola Lookman, on as a substitute at half-time, involved in the build-up to the goal.

The RB Leipzig loanee made a huge impact after coming off the bench and bundled home a corner to seemingly get Leicester back on level terms in the 66th minute but the goal was disallowed as Harvey Barnes was deemed to be offside following a VAR review.

There was more drama to come as Wilfred Ndidi headed in at the near post from a corner in the 85th minute but the goal was chalked off as Barnes, who was offside again, was interfering with play according to VAR.

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho joined the action when he took Soumaré’s place on the pitch in the 73rd minute.

Sports / Mikel, Okocha Or Kanu: Who Was The Most Successful Nigerian Player by Adejoke123(f): 11:29am On Sep 16, 2021
Over the years, there have always been debate about who the greatest Nigerian Player of all time is. Kanu Nwankwo launched Nigerians to the Internal scene by being one of the first Nigerians to play for major European big boys and winning the Champions League in 1995 with Ajax.

Firstly, the greatest of all time (GOAT) is always a controversial topic in any field. This is because people use different criteria in determining who the GOAT is, and that’s why it is subjective.

But it is important to note that there’s a difference between the greatest and best player ever. Best is about ability alone while the other encapsulates everything, and that’s why I believe Ronaldo is the greatest player of his generation.

Having explained what greatness is all about, I have decided to narrow down the players that can be considered as Nigeria’s greatest player ever to three.

No disrespect to the likes of Segun Odegbami, Felix Owolabi, and Christian Chukwu, but they don’t tick all boxes, and also, they only appeal to older generations.

So the players I have picked are John Mikel Obi, Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Jay-Jay Okocha. The criteria I used in picking out this three are honours, influence, popularity and then talent.

While the likes of Sunday Oliseh, Finidi George, Victor Ikpeba and Emmanuel Amuneke also have a shout, I decided to go for those three because they tick all boxes.

Before revealing my choice, I’ll take a look at their careers.

Mikel is the most successful player among the three following his success with Chelsea. The 32-year-old won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the Champions League and Europa League during his time with the Blues.

However, while titles are important in a player’s career, it is unfair to use it as the lone criterion in the ‘GOAT’ debate.

Titles won is a function of the team, and in fairness, Mikel won these titles because he played in a time Chelsea dominated English football.

Although he made over 300 appearances for the Blues, he was not really that important in the team. Chelsea would still have won those trophies without Mikel.

He did not have the same influence as Drogba, Lampard or Terry even though he featured regularly. On the international scene, Mikel won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, but his national team career mirrored that of his club career.

He had over 80 caps for Nigeria, but Mikel never imposed his authority in games. He was named captain following Enyeama’s retirement, but he was overshadowed by the likes of Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa in big games.

While his time as captain was commendable, his influence on the pitch was average at best.

The second name on my list is Kanu Nwankwo. Like Mikel, Kanu also had a successful club career first with Ajax and later with Arsenal.

The lanky forward won the Champions League, three Eredivisie titles, the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup with Ajax.

After leaving Ajax, Kanu joined Inter Milan where he won the UEFA Cup. He left Inter to sign for Arsenal, and during his time with the Gunners, he won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

He also won the FA Cup with Portsmouth, scoring the winner in 2008. However, unlike Mikel, Kanu was a key player in some of the teams he played for.

At Arsenal, he is fondly remembered for the hat-trick he scored against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. At the same time, he also scored some great goals against Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough and Deportivo La Coruna.

As stated earlier, he also scored the goal that won Portsmouth the FA Cup in 2008. He also won a lot of individual honours.

Kanu is a two time BBC and CAF African Player of the year, while he also finished 11th and 23rd in the 1996 and 1999 Ballon d’Or awards respectively.

But success eluded Kanu on the international stage, and that’s the only blemish in his illustrious career. His only glory moment for Nigeria came at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics where he played a major role in Nigeria’s gold medal victory.

Despite representing Nigeria at six AFCON editions, Kanu never scored a goal, while he also did not win a title. At the 2000 edition, he was one of the two players that missed their spot-kicks against Cameroon.

Nevertheless, despite his lack of trophy with the national team, Kanu appealed to a lot of Nigerians and was a role model for a lot of people, especially after coming back from heart surgery. His popularity, influence and individual honours give him the edge over Mikel.

The last person on my list is Austin Jay-Jay-Okocha. Okocha never had much success at club level, but he was the most talented and popular among the three.

Only a few players both present and past could attempt what Okocha do with the ball. He was a magician and also created a lot of unforgettable moments.

He is hugely popular with Nigerians for his trickery, creativity and ability to create something out of the ordinary. Okocha was part of the Super Eagles team that dominated the 90s, while he also played a leading role in the team in the early parts of the new Millenium.

Of the three players picked, It is Okocha that Nigerians connect with most. He carried the country so many times and was a great role model.

Ask any aspiring footballer which Nigerian player they admire most, and the answer will be Okocha. The Premier League is the popular league in the country, and Okocha is one of the reasons why it has a massive following.

Although Mikel’s move to Chelsea also contributed to Premier League’s popularity in Nigeria, Okocha’s impact was more significant.

His move to Bolton came at a time DSTV started showing the Premier League. And he never disappointed as he delivered brilliant performances which earned him legendary status at the Reebok stadium.

Jay-Jay was so good that he was named in Daily Telegraph’s Premier League best 100 players. He was the only Nigerian on that list which says a lot given he never won the Premier League.

He was also named in Pele’s top 125 living footballers. He was twice BBC African Footballer of the year and was a runner-up twice for the CAF award, and was once nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

So Who Among The Three Is Nigeria’s Greatest Player?

Kanu and Mikel achieved so much at club level, but they don’t have the same influence as Okocha. Kanu won a lot of teams and individual honours and should have been the obvious choice given he is also popular among Nigerians.

But as stated earlier, he never won anything for the National team, and that counts against him. Okocha may not have many titles as the two, but he is hugely popular among Nigerians and also the most talented.

It’s why he is racking up major endorsements even in retirement. Kanu and Mikel may have a lot of trophies, but Okocha remains Nigeria’s greatest player.

Sports / Glasgow Celtic Defender Reveals He Wants To Play For Nigeria by Adejoke123(f): 10:15am On Sep 16, 2021
Glasgow Celtic center back Osaze Urhoghide has revealed that he would be honoured to play international football for three-time African champions Nigeria.

He was born in the Netherlands to Nigerian parents twenty one years ago and is also eligible for England having lived in the country for roughly fifteen years.

Of all the countries Urhoghide qualifies to represent, the Nigeria Football Federation have made the first step to cap him by inviting him to a Nigeria U23 training camp before the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya in 2019.

In a question and answer session with his fans, the center half was asked if he would play for Nigeria and he replied : “Personally it would be an honour to play for Nigeria. International football is something that I’m working towards and hopefully in the near future I can play for them.

“I’ve got some options Nigeria, Netherlands, England as well so there are some options so I’m working towards that.

“It is one of my goals as well so hopefully in the near future I’ll achieve it.”
Urhoghide admits to being a boyhood Chelsea fan because his Nigerian father supports the Stamford Bridge outfit.

“Growing up I’ve always supported Chelsea. I lived in West London, my dad supports Chelsea.

“I’m not sure why I chose to pick Chelsea but probably because my dad supported them but the teams I’ve stayed with as well, supported them being with the highs and lows but it’s always been Chelsea”

Since his celebrated move to Celtic from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer transfer window, Urhoghide has made one competitive appearance for the Hoops and it was for their B team in a SPFL Trust Trophy clash against Morton on September 4.
