Ekiti residents groan as outage persists By sulaiman Salawudeen, Ado-Ekiti THE lingering power outage in Ekiti State has crippled business activities, it was learnt yesterday. Residents wonder why the weeklong outage has not elicited attention from relevant authorities. While the outage is obvious at nights, those who depend on electricity for their daily businesses are groaning. A teacher, Mr. Simon Adetula, said: “It is unusual and extremely dangerous for a whole state to be in darkness for almost one week.” Some communities have reported burglary and rape cases. Residents said miscreants have been operating easily because of the outage. Worst hit are residents of Fajuyi, Adebayo, Federal and State Housing Estates and Federal Polytechnic Road. An electrician, simply identified as Dolapo, said the outage has devastated businesses. Dolapo said: “I have lost a lot of money in the four days of the outage. It is either you are ready to burn fuel for a whole day or you are out of business. “Unfortunately, you cannot increase your billing system. Customers will just go to another person.” Investigations have shown that the fault emenated from a main source outside the state. |
Residents groan over power outage in Abeokuta Residents of Abeokuta are groaning under the prolonged power outage in many parts of the ancient city. As a result of the outage, many areas in Abeokuta metropolis have been thrown into partial or perpetual darkness in the last two months, it was learnt. Investigations revealed that while some areas like Oke-Lantoro, and Abiola Way, did not have light about four weeks, other areas such as GRA, Onikolobo, and Hilltop have been having two to three hours of light in a day. Some residents, who spoke to NAN last week lamented that the power situation in the city was growing from bad to worse and also causing unprecedented hardship. Olayinka Odukoya, a 43-year-old teacher, said that she had never witnessed such long period of outage in her 20 years of staying in the city. ``It is very sad and disheartening how Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has thrown us into perpetual darkness in the last three Months,'' she said. For Chinadu Chizoba, a restaurant operator, ``the situation is digging unhealthy holes in our pockets, because we spend so much to buy fuel on daily basis. ``My business demands that I have power every time, otherwise l should not expect customers in my shop.'' He further said that the huge sum spent on fuelling his generating set had made him to reduce his staff. Chizoba, however, passionately appealed to the PHCN and the Federal Government to urgently address the issue of outage in the city. Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, said that businesses were collapsing as a result of the situation, adding that the continuous outage would further threaten the security situation in the city. She accused the government of not been sensitive to the yearnings of the people. ``In my house, we spend a lot on petrol every day, how do you explain that? It is very ridiculous, we have resigned to faith that PHCN would never improve,'' she said. Also, a 21-year-old student, Lamidi Razaq, lamented the outage, and said that students were planning to stage a peaceful demonstration to call the attention of the Federal Government to the situation. He said that if the situation was not urgently addressed, the students would have no options than to take to the streets in the metropolis. ``We have written to the school management to liaise with PHCN and others, we need light we do not want to know how they want to do it,'' he explained. When contacted, the PHCN Head of Distribution unit in Abeokuta, Mr Ayodele Arowoshade, told NAN that the situation was not limited to the city, adding that it was a national phenomenon. He explained that the city was getting just five megawatts out of the six thousand Megawatts of power needed to guarantee regular power supply. Arowoshade, however, gave the assurance that the situation would improve when more megawatts were added to the supply chain in the city. He also attributed the outage in some parts of the town to lackadaisical attitude of some of the residents, adding that PHCN was not informed about some of the problems. ``If you don’t come or call our office to inform us about a problem in your area, then, how do we know?. `I don’t have an indicator in my office that alert me of transformer or other problems, people need to tell us, so that we can get it fixed,'' he said. |
Ibadan in all its rusty glory Four Ibadan communities protest 12-month black-out DESPITE much publicized improvement in services of Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN), in recent times, four communities in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, have protested “one year of total black out.” The communities are, Agugu in Ibadan North East Local Government, Oremeji, Babanla and Ogbere located in Ona Ara Local Government, whose residents trooped out to demonstrate neglect by the PHCN. The spokesperson for the communities, Mr Lanre Osho told National Daily that for the past one year, “there has been no sign of power from PHCN not even for a minute.” He said relentless efforts were made through complains and petitions, “but all proved abortive.” He recalled that some of the serving political office holders, who, during the last electioneering campaigns pledged to address the problem within one month, “have failed to deliver.” Another resident, Chief Sola Lana, lamented that hope of possible solution from the new administration, in the state, “have been dashed away as no government officials both from state and local have come to their aid, despite massive votes recorded for the ruling party in the area during the last general elections.” “When we complained about this problem to the last government before they packed off, we hoped that ruling party would be different but the situation got worsen as some of the PHCN equipment got rotten everyday.” The people of Babanla and Ogbere areas vehemently destroyed PHCN local office located in their area, during their own protest on the ground that, the workers there, “are only concerned about cutting wires and collecting illegal money after harassing the people to pay their bills even when there is no light.” Reliable sources told our correspondent that, PHCN has been fingered for alleged “intentional damage to the transformer at Oremeji, when last they came to repair the fault.” Already, landlords in the affected areas had resorted “to find spiritual means to resolve the aftermath of the 12 months of total black out.” Efforts to reach the Zonal Manager of the PHCN in Ibadan proved abortive as all his hand sets were switched off when our correspondent contacted these lines. The chairmen of the affected local councils were also not available when contacted on phone.

Yoruba-on-Yoruba atrocity |
ayswags: show me the evidence mugu and who the inducted u into the police force useless womanYou seem to be the only Yoruba who does not know that Awo committed suicide. Read how Awo committed suicide here. Twenty –three years after he suddenly was reported dead of natural cause and two years shy of his golden jubilee , facts are now emerging on the reasons that led to First and Second Republic political heavyweight ,Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo committing suicide It was learned that he did it to stem the tide of a possible military court martial into an insurrection he was planning to lead alongside his political associates at the time when it became evident that then Military President ,General Ibrahim Babangida was intending staying in power forever. In a no-hold barred interview with FS Online recently,a grass root politician ,Mr Adebayo Adeyinka who lives within the College Road at Ifako-Ijaiye axis in Ogba ,a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria was livid with rage when he learned that a key politician connected to the issue was denying the incident. He revealed that Chief Awolowo wanted to lead some kind of guerilla warfare or militant campaign against the government of President Babangida so that he can be overthrown through a popular or people -led putsch. According to him , the Elder Statesman summoned a meeting of his core loyalists over the issue and this was even filmed so as to strengthen the extent of commitment of each of the politician that attended the meeting, He pointed out that however unknown to all of those who were privy to this meeting and clarion call , Chief Lateef Kayode Jakande ,Former Executive Governor of Lagos State had a different plan as he betrayed them to the military . He Said:’ But unknown to them , Chief Jakande was planning to betray them, he went to President Ibrahim Babangida and promptly showed him the tape “Papa Awolowo was invited for a meeting with President Ibrahim Babangida who was then staying at Dodan Barracks which was the seat of power as at then and the truth of his clandestine meetings was revealed to him by the gap –toothed General “He gave Papa some options and that was for him to be ready to face a court martial , be ready to go to a prison or better still go on exile “At this stage Papa felt instead of allowing some ambitious khaki boy to mess him up he should just pack it in and call it a day ,so Chief Awolowo decide to commit suicide so as to save himself from the ignominy of going to prison for the second time in his lifetime . “But before he did this he called his core loyalists for a meeting ,before then he had called up Late Chief Bola Ige [Cicero],since the latter had a very strong understanding of the Hausa Language having had his formative years as a young man in Kaduna but discovered that the late Esa-Oke strongman was innocent after he was interrogated by Papa “He called others for enquiries while asking them to tender the video cassettes of the meeting they all attended to discuss the plans to topple President Babangida for examination ,at this juncture Chief Jakande developed a cold feet as he could not produce his own copy of the video which was freely distributed to all that was present at the meeting previously before the betrayal and that was how the cat was let out of the bag “So he cursed him at this point and pointed out that he will never have any form of relevance politically as far as Nigeria was concerned and till today members of the Awolowo Dynasty avoids him like a plague. “I was their when the letter he wrote to the family to beg them for forgiveness over the unfortunate incident was read in the presence of all present ,if he continues to deny I am ready to confront him publicly again on the same issue as I can even remember that elders asked him to go to the grave of the late sage to plead for forgiveness “When he was questioned he lied that the National Security Organization now State Security Services had visited his house to check on him and in the process took the tape in question but” Awoists” knew that this was a very weak argument as he did not inform their political group of this development before their enquiry on the subject “That was how Senator Abraham Adesanya assumed the leadership of the Awolowo camp of Yoruba politics after the demise of the man ,he was not even so close to Awolowo during his lifetime like Chief Jakande and that was why many called him Baba Kekere on account of this cosy relationship “Before he gave up the ghost , he said his prayers and then took the poison which killed him almost immediately but the public was not fully aware as they were given a different account of what happened. “We were simply told that he died while he was brushing his teeth in his bathroom at his Park Lane,Apapa residence here in Lagos “He was stupendously wealthy during his lifetime, infact there is know company at Oba Akran in Ikeja ,Lagos where he does not have at least a five percent equity, Dideolu Court in Ogba alone cannot be valued at less than N10 Billion ,that was the place that he had in mind to be his Seat of power if he was elected as Nigeria’s President. ‘He owned Shonibare Estate but the man he was using as a front and who later went to prison over some issues which Awolowo himself was privy to eventually laid claim to the estate. “He got all of this wealth due to a great measure of goodwill and tax waivers he gave to investors whenever they come to establish their business. “Anytime you buy a bottle of Coca-Cola you are enriching the Awolowo Dynasty ,go to Ijebu Ikenne and you will discover that the price of a bag cement there is different from other parts of the nation due to the subsidy that the citizens enjoy on account of Awolowo who was their son and I hope you know that West African Portland Cement is in Ewekoro and not Ikenne. “On account of this great betrayal Awolowo family members regard the “Awoist” as a group people should deal with using a long spoon till this day and this explains why when The Peoples Democratic Party Government gave some of them political appointment lately they accepted it without thinking twice. “Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu was made an Ambassador by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo while , Mr Segun Awolowo Jnr was given a plum job at the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja as a Secretary. “Recently when Afenifere was disintegrating Mama out of concern for her husband’s legacies decided to call a truce because as she puts it then, she did not know what she was going to tell her husband the day they meet in heaven “He made Sijuwade rich , because he was his business associate and in fact some of us held very strong views that he was one of his fronts and later the same man became the Ooni of Ife”he added Mr Adebayo Adeyinka recalled his several years of following grass root politics right from the days of Action Group to the Unity Party of Nigerian era in the second republic but now lamented that he had since lost all interest in partisan politics due to the massive corruption in our polity. He listed such blue chips like Dunlop Nigeria Plc ,Guinness Nigeria Plc, Neimeth Pharmaceutical Nigeria Plc ,May and Baker Nigeria Plc ,Vitafoam Nigeria Plc ,Wahum Nigeria Limited ,CAP Nigeria Plc , International Paints of West Africa [IPWA], Berger Paints Nigeria Plc ,Berec Nigeria Limited ,Kabelmetal, Nigeria Bottling Company Plc ,Leventis Nigera Plc ,West African Portland Cement Company,[Lafarge ],Wema Bank Nigeria Plc, Scoa Nigeria Plc ,CFAO Nigeria Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc ,Wemaboard Estates, Odu’A Group, Livestock Feeds Nigeria Plc , Nigerian Breweries Plc as places the Awolowo family have commercial interest to mention just a few. Apart from this stocks analysts believe that the most visible of his investment ,The Nigerian Tribune Newspapers cannot be valued at less than N100billion today in terms of brand evaluation as Thisday Newspapers was valued by the Owner ,.Mr Nduka Obaigbena at N200 Billion recently during a media chart while celebrating his fiftieth birthday sometimes last year. Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a leader who believed that the state should channel Nigeria’s resources into education and state –led infrastructural development. At his own expense albeit controversially ,he introduced the free primary education for all of the Western Region ,he equally established the first television service in Africa in 1959 and expanded electrification projects in the region using the proceeds from the highly lucrative Cocoa export industry. The Cocoa House in Ibadan regarded by many as one of the major landmarks of Nigeria’s architectural history was built as a result of his economic blueprint which was targeted towards the emancipation of his people from poverty He built the first stadium in West Africa , the Liberty Stadium ,Ibadan and he coined the name “Naira “for Nigeria’s official currency ,it was previously called Nigerian Pounds. During the 1970’s ,he was very critical of Nigeria’s military expenditure insisting that more should be spent on development He ran a free health care programme for children up till the age of eighteen years . On his death on the 9th of May,1987 as a mark of respect for his legacies ,The University Of Ile-Ife which ironically he helped to build as Premier of the Old Western Nigeria was re-named in his honour as part of a post humous celebration of his life and times. His portraits adorn public places in Nigeria especially in his native Yoruba land where he is seen as an icon. His picture also adorn Nigeria’s one hundred naira note. He has been described surprisingly by some of his greatest critics and even political opponents as probably the Best President Nigeria never had. He struck a chord with the womenfolk during his lifetime when in a rare show of public affection for his wife of several years, Chief Mrs Hannah Dideolu Awolowo told the world that the woman was his jewel of inestimable value. How right or prophetic he was because his wife has continued to strengthen the mileage of the husband’s name even in death. During an exclusive interview with FS Online at his Ilupeju home in Lagos last year, Chief Lateef Jakande upon being probed with questions over his relationship with Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on account of what feelers were suggesting had denied that they had a bad relationship shortly before his death. He insisted that those that said that they had any problems between them prior to Chief Awolowo’s death were not been honest as they were all telling lies. https://www.nairaland.com/548978/why-did-it-take-people |

http://odili.net/news/source/2013/jan/27/605.html 2015: Southern leaders gang up against North Written by Idowu Samuel-Uyo Sunday, January 27, 2013 advertisement POLITICAL juggernauts across the country have started drawing battle lines ahead the 2015 general election as indications emerged that some leaders of thought from the 17 Southern states of the country would be converging on Enugu on Tuesday to take a position on the issue of 2015 Presidency. The Southern leaders of thought, led by the chairman, Delta State Elders’ Forum, Chief Edwin Clark, had earlier met twice in Lagos and Akwa Ibom, just as they are set to hold their third session at the Nike Lake Hotel Resort, Enugu early next week to finalise talks among them about 2015. Sunday Tribune can report authoritatively that the Southern leaders would not only deliberate on the build up to 2015, but might also rally support behind President Goodluck Jonathan on his possible ambition to contest the next presidential election, notwithstanding the stiff opposition he is currently contending with. The group, known as Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, has Dr Alex Ekweme (South-East), Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi (South-West) and a host of other members, including Chief Olu Falae, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Governor Ggbenga Daniel and Dr Kunle Olajide. Other members include Chief Mbazulike Amaechi (leader, South-East) and Mr. Ledum Mitee from the South-South. In an interview with Sunday Tribune, Chief Clark said the geopolitical zones of the South were more united in their resolve to ensure the restructuring of Nigeria to guarantee equality of all the component units such that no region or ethnic group would claim superiority over the others. He said the Enugu meeting would involve all like minds from the South-West, South-East, South-South and part of the Middle Belt, as each zone, according to him, would attend the meeting with 40 delegates. Former minister and a top shot of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Babatope, who also spoke with Sunday Tribune on the agenda of the meeting, said it was time the 17 South-South states came together to begin to speak with one voice against the background of the state of insecurity in the country and the larger than life image being carved by a section of the Northern region over the rest of Nigeria. Babatope said for so long the core North area of the Northern region had been giving an impression that it was superior to the other zones of the federation and that the presidential power of Nigeria was its birth right, a situation he said had been inimical to the progress the country. The former Director of Publicity and Propaganda of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria stressed that the Southern Nigerian Peoples Assembly would deliberate on the 2015 presidential election and examine all available options on possible contestant against incumbent President Jonathan with a view to deciding who among them would earn the support of the group. He said in the event that the group does not find a better option among aspirants, it would not hesitate to cast its lot for President Jonathan who at the moment has not indicated resolve to contest in the 2015 presidential election. The Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, since it sprang up mid 2012, has been making strident call on the Federal Government to convoke a Sovereign National Conference as panacea for the increasing multiple problems which have been threatening the existence of Nigeria. During its last meeting in Uyo, the assembly called on President Jonathan to sack from his government and the nation’s security forces, persons of dubious integrity and loyalty as it spoke against activities of Boko Haram sect, urging the government to treat its activities as treasonable and apply relevant laws on culprits and their sponsors. |
http://odili.net/news/source/2013/jan/28/832.html Daughter exposes father whose gang killed four policemen in Lagos by Comfort Oseghale Lagos police boss, Umar Manko advertisement A17-year-old girl identified simply as Simi has exposed the hiding place of her robber father to the officials of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command. Her father, Ife, was the alleged leader of a 10-man robbery gang that killed four policemen in Ajah during a robbery operation two weeks ago. THE PUNCH had reported on January 15, 2012 that the dead policemen were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed by the robbers. Simi did not give her father up easily. She gave the information the police needed to arrest her father after a four-hour non-stop interrogation. Ironically, it was the love that Ife's wife, Taiye, had for her daughter that first alerted the police to the existence of the daughter. On the day that the gang killed the policemen, they left the area in a hurry. In their haste, Ife accidentally dropped his handset. The police downloaded the numbers on the phone and after a thorough screening, they were able to get the telephone number belonging to Taiye. They subsequently tagged the number. Meanwhile, Taiye has a frozen food and drinks shop at Sola Arodoye Street, Ijaye, Lagos. A resident in the community told PUNCH Metro that Taye had not been coming to the shop for about two weeks. She said, "We noticed that she stopped coming to the shop for a while. Even Ife was absent at that period of time. It was Simi who was left to run the shop. Taye had introduced Simi to us as her younger sister. It wasn't until her arrest last week that we knew that Simi was her daughter." Ife and his wife were said to have switched off both their phones and afterwards fled Lagos. But last week Thursday, Taye finally made a call with her phone to check on Simi. She called on one Funke, who lives close to the shop to give the phone to Simi so she could speak with her. Two hours after that call was made, some SARS operatives traced Funke to her place of work at a nearby school and arrested her. A police source said, "Funke was interrogated for more than five hours. The SARS operatives thought she was a member of the gang too. Eventually they discovered she knew nothing about Ife except as a neighbour. It was Funke who led the SARS operatives to Taye's shop at Sola Arodoye street." The team then arrested Simi after Funke identified her and took her to Ojokoro Police Division. For four hours, Simi repeatedly denied knowledge of her parents' whereabouts. When the police showed no intention of stopping the interrogation, she eventually agreed to cooperate with the SARS team. The team accompanied the teenager to her parents' home at Beckley estate, U-turn bus stop at Abule Egba. Ife and Taye had just returned from Abeokuta where they had fled to. The source said, "Ife tried to escape but was shot in the process. In his wife's travelling box were hidden two pistols, one AK 47 rifle and a locally made double barrelled gun. Clearly, Taye was aware that Ife was an armed robber." One of the residents at Sola Arodoye said they thought that Ife was a worker with a paint manufacturing company. She said, "Some of us had often wondered what Ife did for a living because he was usually at his wife's shop all day till she closed at night. Those who dared to ask said Taye had told them Ife worked in his father's paint company." The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, when contacted said some arrests had been made. Braide said, "Ife was actually arrested last week. Efforts are being made to apprehend other members of his gang on the run. "Ife was also involved in a Thermocool robbery in 2011. He has been on the command's wanted list for years." |
