What Tinubu told Senators, Rep members in Lagos meetingBy Wale Odunsi on July 16, 2017@dailypostngr Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, has charged federal lawmakers to come up with legislation that would help in promoting the country’s diversity. Tinubu spoke when the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu led Senate and House of Representatives Committee on the review of 1999 Constitution on a visit at his residence in Lagos on Saturday. He said: “I urge you to continue to work for the unity of the nation for our diversity to be meaningful. “I promise to be available to render any assistance by providing suggestions and ideas that can foster a greater Nigeria. “Do not allow excuses turn you to the house-of-do-nothing “The country is not in a panic mode because of the way you have given effect to the executive constitutional requests”. Tinubu also urged the legislators to take another look at some of the items in the exclusive federal list, which he described as too loaded. According to him, this will pave the way for the practice of true federalism in the country. Earlier, Ekweremadu said the visit was to honour Tinubu as a prominent leader and a former Senator. The deputy president of the Senate described him as a man of “great expertise in the art of governance and law-making”. He added that the lawmakers would always be ready to learn from his wealth of knowledge. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/16/tinubu-told-senators-rep-members-lagos-meeting/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook

Dasuki speaks from detention, opens up on 2015 elections, Boko Haram By Wale Odunsi on July 16, 2017 Incarcerated former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) has spoken of the prompt intervention of the regime of President Goodluck Jonathan in tackling the Boko-Haram menace and recovering dozens of towns and villages which led to the smooth conduct of 2015 general elections in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria. Dasuki stated this from detention in his foreword to a 308-page new book titled: “Boko Haram Media War- An Encounter with the Spymaster” written by Yushau A. Shuaib. “In the war-front are evident success stories which Shuaib has mentioned in some of the articles that featured in this book, especially on media relations, self-censorship, gallantry in recovering dozens of cities and towns among other declassified revelations,” he said. Dasuki said: “In fact, without our intervention in ensuring the defeat of Boko Haram, the electorates could not have had the opportunity to exercise their franchise. “It is a fact that we provided peace and stability that afforded Nigerians, especially in the North-East in voting for their governors, legislators and others in the 2015 elections.” He noted that apart from the ‘Soft Approach Programme’ initiated for countering terrorism through de-radicalization without the use of force, the administration also introduced and implemented programmes for economic empowerment, education, communication, rehabilitation and counselling in the North-East. According to the former NSA, “Crisis Communication, as one of the components of general campaigns, was initiated to win the heart of the citizens, boost the morale of the troops and weaken the fighting spirit of the terrorists.” “On the media campaign, Yushau Shuaib who came highly recommended had been disengaged from the public service but was immediately re-engaged by the system to act as Chief Consultant on Crisis Communication. “From the theories of Mass Communication, we deployed practical aspects of Crisis Communication throughout the Campaign period, especially between June 2013 to May 2015”. Dasuki posited that sensitive security issues were handled in a most professional manner, with strict adherence to confidentiality to avoid compromising national security. He further said that “In strategic communication for crisis management, especially in confronting the Boko Haram, the media was a major tool in the campaign against the insurgency. “There was thorough, timely and responsible reportage of the campaign. Some of the media played very strategic roles at great risk to their lives in the successes recorded, especially by our forces in the war against terrorism”. He said as part of efforts in ensuring the mutual relationship with the media stakeholders, a 17member Forum of the Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies (FOSSRA) was established with representatives from the military, security, intelligence and response agencies. He added that through the media component of the War on Terror, Yushau Shuaib and his team carried out various activities including issuance over 3000 media contents including newsworthy items and publications, exclusive news placements and editorial control of sensitive reports, hosting of timely and regular Press briefings, social media engagements, amongt others. Dasuki stated that while Shuaib’s narration covers only one of the great strides in the media campaigns, he appealed to media practitioners to embrace the challenge to examine other areas of the interventions such as the Soft-Approach Programmes, Strategic Alliances and Military Operations that the erstwhile regime carried out successfully. He commended the author for his courage and boldness in the face of the current situations in the country and for his principle and consistency in stating the obvious and indeed the facts in the book. Yushau Shuaib, in 2013, ran into trouble over one of his writings and was compulsorily retired from the public service when a cabinet minister lodged a complaint. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/16/dasuki-speaks-detention-opens-2015-elections-boko-haram/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook |

9 persons including pregnant woman killed in fresh communal war between Ebonyi, Cross River No fewer than nine persons including a pregnant woman was on Saturday reported killed in a renewed communal war between Ofioji in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi state and Ijutun-Idoru of Obubura council area of Cross River State. At the time of filling this report, it was gathered that the people of Ijutun-Odoru in Cross River allegedly invaded Ofioji Izzi community shooting sporadically and killing about nine persons. Over 56 houses have equally been burnt down. The leader of Ofioji community, Chief Nwobegu Mbam who addressed newsman from his hideout where they were taking refuge, painted a gory picture of how they were slaughtered by the Cross River militia whom he described as callous and called on the state and federal governments to come to their aid before they are completely wiped out. Mbam further said that during the attack, a pregnant woman he identified as Ukamaka Nwifuru allegedlly lost her life while houses belonging to natives of the community were razed to dust by the rampaging fighters. “it was very late on Friday night, we had all gone to bed but suddenly a very terrifying sound was heard in our community and in the ensuing confusion, we ran out only to see many houses on fire and that was when we knew that the people of Cross River have invaded us again. They were shooting our people without mercy; they burnt our houses and Carted away our property” Meanwhile, over 58 lives have been lost while more than 1000 houses have been reportedly burnt since 8 years ago that the crisis erupted. In a swift reaction, the governor David Umahi who spoke to newsman through the Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, described the incident as barbaric and called on the law enforcement agencies to investigate the level of involvement of a former minority leader in the Cross River State House of Assembly, one Alex Irek who had allegedly been indicted by a white paper on the origin of the intractable crisis in the two communities. Uzor who said it was the height of idiocy to link Ebonyi State governor to the crisis called for the arrest of the former lawmaker for allegedly arming his constituents to go into war with their neighbouring Ebonyi community. “The Governor made a passionate appeal to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai over the spate of killing of the people of Ebonyi state by their Cross River counterparts. He made the supplication which was well coded by the Chief of Army Staff and what we heard again was this provocative carnage and wantom killing of our people by the Cross River people and a former lawmaker could descend so low to say that the crisis came as a result of Governor Umahi’s appeal for help and deployment of more soldiers,” he stated. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/15/9-persons-including-pregnant-woman-killed-fresh-communal-war-ebonyi-cross-river/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook |

I think you are sounding good. Truly I might be forced to believe your ideology, But the truth must be told, Nigeria is not ripe for your ideology of let unknow man come out to rule us. Let me tell you one fact, most of those crying for better Nigeria are people that have lost political power to embezzle money, or those that are yet to get to power, when they do, believe me story will change. As for me, Nigeria is not ripe for Democracy |

The president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has urged Nigerians to be calm over the new nine-year Basic Education Curriculum that had stirred controversy among religious bodies. Mr. Saraki made the call Wednesday while receiving a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. He assured the delegation that the Senate Committee on Basic Education would investigate the complaints by the association on the curriculum to make it acceptable and satisfactory to all religions. Mr. Saraki said the process began in 2010 when the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan came up with a series of reforms. “This is with a view to reduce the number of subjects in school curriculum,” he said. “As leaders, we must continue to seek and find solutions to problems. “You will remember that in 2010, the past administration came up with reforms on how to reduce the number of subjects at the basic education level. “There were about 20 subjects at that time, and subsequently they were reduced to 12. “In the process of implementing those reforms, we have this problem. Why I am saying this is so we don’t leave here and believe that it was done to favour one religion over the other. “Now the reform is clearly not working. So our responsibility is to look into that reform and make it work. “I am sure that there was no intention to make one group feel disadvantaged with this new school curriculum. ‘’This is why this Senate will direct our Committee on Education to look at the reform and find out why it is not working with the relevant stakeholders,” he said. Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Charles Adisa, called for the intervention of the National Assembly to ensure genuine respect for Nigeria’s Constitution. Mr. Adisa, who represented, the CAN national president, Samson Ayokunle, said: “We also call for the abolition of obnoxious laws that infringe on freedom of worship.” He said CAN wanted Islamic Religious Knowledge and Christian Religious Knowledge to be offered separately, while Social Studies and Civic Education should be merged. Mr. Adisa also said the federal and state ministries of education should employ more teachers for religious subjects. “This will allow students to opt for religious studies of their choice in all public schools in Nigeria,” he added. Mr. Adisa noted that the Constitution was supreme over any other consideration. He stressed that Chapter 1 of the Constitution states the fundamental human rights of Nigerians, including freedom of religion. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/236774-saraki-speaks-crk-irk-curriculum-controversy.html
