The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), say it has secured the conviction of 240 suspected drug users in Kano State in the last six months. Mr. Hamza Umar, the Commandant of the agency told newsmen in Kano on Tuesday in commemoration of UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He said the UN day, with the theme “Listen First’’, was marked globally on June 29. According to him, 768 suspects were arrested out of which 505 of them were counselled and 68 rehabilitated during the period. Umar explained that the 240 drug users were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms, while over 39.224 kilograms of different hard drugs including 6451.976 kilograms of cannabis were also seized. He added that among the illicit drugs seized were 327.15 kilograms of psychotropic substances, 358.3 kilograms of cocaine and 31.8 kilograms of methamphetamine. According to him, measures taken by the command have led to the drastic decrease in terms of supply and consumption of hard drugs in the state. “The agency in Kano had commissioned a 16 man committee to steer and coordinate all plans and strategies aimed at curtailing the menace. “It is my belief that in preventing and controlling drug abuse, the community must be mobilised to be part of the war. “The major factors leading to drug abuse are in our community, the abusers are in our community, therefore, the full support and involvement of the various groups in the community is necessary,” the commandant said. The event was supported the Kano State Government, Society for Family Health and Taimako Support Group. http://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2017/07/ndlea-secures-conviction-of-240-illicit.html

A popular South African radio presented has been fired by the Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), for calling President Jacob Zuma a "zombie" in a Facebook post, the privately owned News 24 site has reported. According to SABC spokesman, Kaizer Kganyago, he said OAP Ravi Govender's contract was terminated because of concerns that he had brought the public broadcaster into disrepute. Although, the Radio Lotus presenter had earlier apologized for the post that he said he had put up in anger after listening to a speech by the President at the governing African National Congress' (ANC) policy conference in the main city, Johannesburg, on Friday “Just heard a Zombie Zuma giving a speech on the news. Massacring the beautiful English language. Uneducated creature. Even the other slowpoke [Zimbabwe's President Robert] Mugabe speaks much better," he was reported to have said in the post which was later deleted. Mr. Zuma’s son, Edward, accused Mr. Govender of hate speech and threatened legal action against him. “We fail as a family to understand what prompted Ravi Govender to make such a statement referring to our father as a zombie. Is this still part of freedom of speech? We believe that this is the worst form of abuse of democracy that many of our leaders fought so hard to achieve,” he was quoted by Times Live as saying. http://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2017/07/south-african-journalist-sacked-for.html

African leaders on Tuesday unanimously endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari to champion the fight against corruption in the African Union. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the endorsement came at the end of the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU in Addis Ababa. President Buhari is expected to lead the AU summit scheduled for 2018 entitled: “Winning the Fight Against Corruption: Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation,’’ Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, who gave a synopsis of the summit told the News Agency of Nigeria that the endorsement was in recognition of the President Buhari administration’s commitment and glowing success in the fight against corruption in Nigeria and globally. “The endorsement is very significant because it is the recognition of the negative role corruption and bad governance had played. “I think it is also significant that President Buhari was also asked to champion this because he has been a major inspiration to Africa in frontally combating corruption and bringing positive change towards building a sustainable and prosperous continent. He said the president will, therefore, be expected to provide exemplary and resourceful leadership by working closely with the other African leaders. Others are, the AU Commission and development partners to collectively fashion out common programmes for continent-wide application of the anti-corruption theme in all Member States. “The championship role by President Buhari will also involve a number of diplomatic initiatives to sensitise and raise awareness of the International Community on the dire consequences of corruption and the collective strategies to defeat it. On the need to set up the African Security Fund, ASF, Mr. Onyeama said the time has come for the continent to be independent and break free from foreign support. “Up until now, a lot of our security activities were funded by non-African partners and what we have seen is that they have suddenly decided to cut back on what they were providing. “This is impacting seriously on some of the AU missions like the mission in Somalia, South Sudan not being able to meet up financially. “So, the decision was taken that when member states pay their financial contribution to the union, there should be a fund set aside to finance peace and security in the continent.’’ The minister, who spoke also on the role of Nigeria in ECOWAS, said the time has come for the country to take its leadership role in the organisation. He said further that in order to have an organisation that works, it is also important that Nigeria does not act like a tyrant and that there are mechanisms for consensus. “Nigeria can assert leadership and can also do it in a non-conflicted, inclusive and positive way, and that is what we are trying to do. “There are currently 17 (political) positions allocated to certain countries. “We (Nigeria) are looking for the position of internal services considering that we are largest contributors to the body. “This is a portfolio that will give us the best oversight regarding our interest. “The other is the position of a Judge at the ECOWAS Court Justice,’’ He said though there are challenges in filling the positions, “it is a work in progress and will not damage the ECOWAS too much.’’ Mr. Onyeama said that there was no agreement on the issue of position sharing in the ECOWAS but just a question of buying into a process. He said that a technical committee has been set up to negotiate on what will be inclusive for all countries. He said there is also the challenge of electing the President and the Vice of the ECOWAS Commission after the two years of setting up a reform committee. On women and youth empowerment, the minister said the federal government was already addressing the issue by making it top priority. Mr. Onyeama said the AU’s theme this year, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in the Youth” could not have come at a better time. He said Nigeria was taking advantage o http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/235872-au-endorses-president-buhari-champion-fight-corruption-official.html

A member of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan, has lampooned Governor Ayofele Fayose, for making “disparaging comments” on the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari. Hide quoted text Aribisogan advised Fayose to address the hardship being faced by the people of Ekiti State and stop mocking Buhari and making comments he is not morally and professionally authorized to make. The lawmaker representing Ikole Constituency 1 in the Assembly said Fayose has made himself a laughing stock out of the 36 governors of the federation by his action urging him to desist from making inflammatory statements out of political brinkmanship. Aribisogan, who was suspended by fellow lawmakers for 180 legislative days in October last year but stormed the Assembly three weeks ago to resume office, defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) with about 200 followers on Tuesday. Fayose at a news conference he addressed on Wednesday at the Government House in Ado-Ekiti alleged that Buhari has been placed on a life support machine since June 6 in a London hospital where he has been receiving treatment calling on the President to resign from office. Reacting to Fayose’s comments on Buhari’s health in a statement on Saturday, Aribisogan said “irresponsible utterances and actions” have eroded the governor’s credibility in the eyes of responsible Nigerians who have been praying for the President’s recovery. He described Fayose as “a disaster in governance” whose personal attacks on the President has not portrayed him as a true Yoruba son who cherishes the tradition and respect for age and position. Aribisogan said: “I will like to describe his (Fayose’s) outburst as rantings of a governor who has failed to address the numerous challenges facing his people. Ekiti people are suffering, workers have not been paid for several months, people are hungry. Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu has no right to order Igbos about – Igbo group in South Africa “Those who have laboured in their active years are now being punished by not being paid their pension and children are being sent home because parents can no longer pay their school fees, many are dying daily because the governor has no plan for the health of his people. “The governor, rather than pay attention to these challenges , has made the abuse of President Buhari a major policy of his administration. Nigerians are already aware of the health status of President Buhari and there is no vacuum in the Presidency to warrant the unnecessary outburst of the governor who has been deceiving Nigerians that all is well with Ekiti people.” Aribisogan added: “Out of the 36 governors in Nigeria, Mr. Fayose is the only one who has been abusing President Buhari without restraint and he has continued to portray Ekiti people as the enemy of the Federal Government through his action and utterances. “I want to warn Mr. Fayose to stop pitching Ekiti against the Federal Government by portraying them as people who lack respect for constituted authorities and people who do not like the President of the country. “What is the business of a governor who is not one of the medical personnel attached to the President to be talking about the President being on a life support machine. The country should ask him to provide a proof of his information. “Governor Ayo Fayose has become a disaster in governance as he has impoverished the people through his draconian policies. I urge him to find solutions to the numerous socio-economic crises in Ekiti State and stop mocking President Buhari over his health. “Let him look inward and find solutions to the myriads of problems bedeviling the state and stop this political brinkmanship that has made him a laughing stock in the country.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/01/ekiti-lawmaker-attacks-fayose-comments-buharis-health/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook |
