By Adesina Quadri Ademola The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has condemned in strong terms the mob action that led to the death of a woman at Ipata Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The victim, believed to be a destitute, was reportedly mistaken for a child kidnapper and lynched by an irate crowd before police officers intervened and rushed her to the General Hospital in Ilorin, where she later died from her injuries. Reacting to the incident, the Director-General of the Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the attack as “barbaric, reprehensible, and totally against Nigeria’s national values.” He warned that jungle justice undermines the rule of law, threatens public safety, and fuels fear and mistrust in society. “The act is a violation of both our collective humanity and the law. It is only constitutionally empowered institutions that have the mandate to investigate and prosecute alleged offenders,” Issa-Onilu said in a statement issued on Friday. The NOA boss aligned with the Kwara State Police Command in urging citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that mob violence cannot substitute due process. He further announced that the Agency would intensify its National Reorientation Campaign by collaborating with community leaders, security agencies, and media stakeholders to deepen public enlightenment on civic responsibility, conflict resolution, and respect for human life. The Agency called on Nigerians to exercise patience, empathy, and patriotism in handling issues of public concern, emphasising that justice must always be pursued through lawful channels.

The Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union (FIBSU) National, under the leadership of its National President, Aare Giwa Kamorudeen Olawale, has lauded the Oyo State Government for disbursing ₦600 million as compensation to property owners affected by the ongoing Circular Road project in Ibadan. The commendation follows the release of the fourth tranche of ₦200 million at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, where Commissioner Hon. Williams Akin Funmilayo reiterated that the full ₦1 billion compensation would soon be completed. In a statement issued by FIBSU National, Aare Giwa described the gesture as a testament to Governor Seyi Makinde’s compassionate leadership and people-oriented governance. “FIBSU National salutes Governor Seyi Makinde for his responsiveness to the yearnings of the people and for prioritising fairness and justice. The compensation scheme reflects a government that values human dignity and the sacrifices of its citizens for development. This is a hallmark of true statesmanship,” the statement read. FIBSU further noted that the Circular Road project, which dates back to 2005 during the tenure of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, has remained a landmark initiative critical to Ibadan’s infrastructural development. The students’ body praised the administration’s decision to compensate both legal and illegal property owners, describing it as “uncommon empathy in governance.” The union also urged beneficiaries to utilise the compensation judiciously while cautioning them against falling victim to fraudulent practices. Representatives of the affected property owners had earlier applauded Governor Makinde for fulfilling his promise, aligning with FIBSU’s position that the current administration has consistently demonstrated credibility and accountability. “On behalf of Ibadan students nationwide, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, and reaffirm our readiness to continue supporting laudable policies that promote development, equity and inclusiveness,” Aare Giwa concluded.

Salid Agriculture Nigeria Limited has inaugurated a 30,000-metric-tonne-per-annum shea butter processing facility in Kudu, Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, in a strategic move to tap into the surging global demand for the commodity and strengthen Nigeria’s agro-industrial base. The state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, who performed the inauguration, hailed the project as a milestone in positioning Niger State as a global hub for shea production. He disclosed that the government has allocated 10,000 hectares for shea tree cultivation to ensure steady raw material supply, while a ₦2 billion Memorandum of Understanding between Niger Foods and Salid Agriculture would create direct employment for women and youths engaged in shea nut harvesting and supply. “This facility heralds a new era where our natural resources are transformed into economic prosperity and job creation,” Bago said. Salid Agriculture’s Chief Executive Officer, Ali Saidu, stated that the plant — the largest of its kind in Africa — plans to expand its processing capacity to 400 metric tonnes per day and develop a modern shea butter refinery. He stressed the company’s commitment to sustainable sourcing, biodiversity preservation, and community empowerment, noting its partnership with GIZ and DFID’s PROPCOM MAIKAIFI project to organise mostly female shea nut pickers into structured cooperatives. Executive Director, Daniel Alabi, described the plant as a testament to resilience and pledged ongoing corporate social responsibility projects, including rural electrification, girl-child education, and environmental conservation. Chief Executive Officer of NEXIM Bank, Abba Bello, whose institution financed the project, remarked that although Nigeria accounts for 60 per cent of global shea nut output, large-scale industrial processing capacity had been lacking until now. He revealed plans to establish four additional processing plants nationwide. The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, commended the governor’s agricultural drive but urged against indiscriminate tree felling.

By Adesina Quadri Ademola (TAA) Language is not just a means of communication; it is the lifeblood of a people, the guardian of their heritage, and the mirror of their identity. The Yoruba language, which once echoed proudly across the South-West of Nigeria and in the diaspora, is now under silent threat—perhaps fading faster than we realise. Today, many Yoruba families have abandoned the language in their homes, replacing it with English as a show of prestige or a supposed pathway to success. Even more alarming, our Obas—custodians of Yoruba culture—are often seen conversing in English among themselves. This is nothing short of a big slap on the Yoruba language. Ironically, the very English people whose language we have adopted are making efforts to learn our language, Yoruba, because they recognise its beauty and cultural depth. The danger is clear: if this trend continues, Yoruba risks becoming a ceremonial language, reserved for greetings and chants at festivals, rather than a living, breathing medium of daily life. A language that carries proverbs, wisdom, and identity—“Owe l’esin oro”—is now treated as a relic of the past. I urge Yoruba kings, traditional rulers, and community leaders to take the lead in promoting our mother tongue. Let Yoruba be spoken in palaces, at community gatherings, and in official local meetings. Our media must also take up this responsibility. I particularly commend ‘Masoyinbo,’ a programme that actively promotes the Yoruba language and culture, alongside other shows that uphold our linguistic heritage. These efforts must be multiplied and supported to inspire the younger generation. The Yoruba language is not just a mode of speech; it defines who we are. To neglect it is to disconnect from our history and to betray our identity. Preserving and promoting Yoruba is not merely a cultural duty—it is an act of survival. If we do not speak our language proudly, we will wake up one day to find it silenced, and with it, a part of our soul gone forever. Adesina Quadri Ademola (TAA) Student Journalist & Cultural Advocate

The Olubadan-in-Council will on Monday hold a crucial meeting at the Oke-Aremo Palace to declare the Olubadan stool vacant and begin the process of selecting the 44th monarch of Ibadanland. Uncertainty surrounds the attendance of High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, former Oyo State governor and the next in line to the throne. He was away when the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin passed and has not returned to the city despite the end of the 21-day mourning period. Sources within the palace confirmed that formal notices of the meeting were issued to council members last Thursday. Following Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy, Chief Ladoja is expected to be nominated and seconded by the council, after which his name will be forwarded to the Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters for approval. Since Oba Olakulehin’s passing, the Ashipa Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade, has been acting as the host to visitors at the palace on Ladoja’s behalf. In a historic shift, today’s meeting will be the first nomination session to be held at the Oke-Aremo Palace, unlike previous ones traditionally conducted at Mapo Hall or Oja’ba Palace.

Lady Comrade Sofiyah Taiwo Lateef, the Association of Female Comrades, AFC Southwest Coordinator and National Vice President has emerged as a strong voice advocating for gender equality and the inclusion of marginalised groups in Nigeria’s political space. Speaking during the POSAN Leadership Webinar themed “The Politics of Inclusion”, Sofiyah emphasised that sustainable democracy cannot thrive if women, youth, persons with disabilities, and minority ethnic groups continue to be sidelined in leadership and decision-making processes. “Women make up a significant part of Nigeria’s population, yet their representation in governance is still alarmingly low,” she stated. “Excluding women and marginalised voices is not only unjust but weakens the nation’s democracy and deprives it of innovative solutions.” She called for gender-sensitive electoral reforms, party constitution amendments, and affirmative action policies to ensure fair representation. According to her, inclusion enhances social cohesion, strengthens institutions, and allows the nation to harness the creativity and resilience of all citizens. Comrade Sofiyah also urged a cultural shift towards valuing diversity and creating open platforms where marginalised voices can engage in policy discussions and hold leaders accountable. “The politics of inclusion is a strategic path to progress,” she said, “and Nigeria can only unlock its full potential when every citizen’s voice counts.” The session concluded with POSAN’s renewed commitment to pushing for policy reforms prioritising equity, inclusivity, and active civic participation.

The unveiling, which took place during a press conference on Tuesday, marks a pivotal achievement under the administration of Governor 'Seyi Makinde. Presiding over the ceremony was the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, who officially presented the club’s logo and introduced its leadership structure. She lauded Governor Makinde for his steadfast commitment to gender-inclusive policies and strategic investment in sports infrastructure. “This milestone would not have been achievable without the visionary support of His Excellency,” Adegoke said. “His administration’s dedication to advancing women’s football through robust funding and systemic backing has laid a strong foundation for the club’s success.” The Commissioner described the formation of Pacesetter Queens FC as more than a sporting initiative — calling it a “movement for progress, excellence and equality.” She urged the newly inducted players to carry the pride of Oyo State in every match, adding that the club is a testament to the government's drive to build sustainable athletic institutions. Adegoke commended the media for its ongoing role in spotlighting women’s sports, and called on the general public to embrace the team as a source of pride and unity. The club’s technical bench comprises a blend of seasoned professionals: Akinwunmi Obajimi – Head Coach Damilola Olaitan Badmus – First Assistant Coach (former player and CAF C Licence holder) Zaccheaus Aderoju – Second Assistant Coach Lateef Lukman – Physical Trainer Foluso Ajayi – FIFA-certified Goalkeeper Trainer Grace Towobola – Welfare Officer (CAF and UEFA B Licence holder) According to Adegoke, this leadership configuration underscores the state’s emphasis on technical competence and capacity building — essential for driving elite performance. She further revealed plans for a one-month open trial for aspiring players, after which the team will be equipped with a branded team bus. Training sessions will take place at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex (main bowl and astroturf) and the Olubadan Stadium, both of which have been upgraded and are ready for full utilisation. The unveiling drew key stakeholders in Nigerian football, including ex-international Mutiu Adepoju and the Chairman of the Oyo State Football Association, Oba James Odeniran — signalling broad institutional support for the initiative. With the launch of Pacesetter Queens FC, Oyo State reinforces its leadership in inclusive sports development, sending a clear message: women’s football is no longer on the sidelines — it is centre stage, with the full weight of government backing behind it.

The union lamented the circumstances surrounding the student's death and issued a firm call for action, stressing the urgent need for the protection and welfare of students, especially in off-campus environments. “LAUTECH, being a non-residential institution, has unfortunately left many students exposed to risks due to inadequate security and the absence of proper oversight in off-campus areas,” the statement read. The union also charged the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to increase surveillance and improve emergency response mechanisms in student-dominated areas of Ogbomoso. “Students deserve to live and learn in a secure environment. Increased patrol, quicker emergency response, and safer neighbourhoods must become non-negotiable,” the statement added. Describing the deceased as a "promising life lost to an avoidable lapse," FIBSU affirmed its commitment to advocating reforms that ensure safety, dignity, and adequate welfare for all students. The revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Monday, 7th July 2025. His passing not only marks the end of a significant chapter in the city’s storied monarchy but also signals the commencement of a transition process guided by the long-established traditional hierarchy of succession within Ibadanland. In accordance with this time-honoured order, the next in line to ascend the throne is the current Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja. A former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Ladoja is widely respected both in political and traditional circles for his statesmanship and deep-rooted connection to the Ibadan chieftaincy system. Subject to formal ratification by the Olubadan-in-Council and subsequent approval by the relevant authorities, Chief Ladoja is poised to become the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland—continuing the city’s legacy of orderly, peaceful, and lineage-based succession. It will be recalled that in August 2024, while speaking on a live radio programme titled Agbami Oselu, High Chief Ladoja expressed a profound sense of destiny regarding his potential ascension. In his words, “By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan. God has been merciful to me. My blood pressure has remained stable.” He further emphasised that divine will supersedes human interference, stating, “Anyone God has destined to become Olubadan will become Olubadan. No matter the obstacles placed in the path, if God ordains it, it will come to pass.” Reflecting on his long-standing involvement in the chieftaincy progression, Ladoja also referenced political tensions from the past, notably during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi. He asserted, “What I know is that it is the Olubadan who is meant to effect amendments to the system, not the governor.” He concluded his remarks with a message of humility and service: “I will do what the people of Ibadan want. Everything is determined by God. We have had many who attained the ranks of Balogun or Otun Olubadan but never became Olubadan. It is all about destiny.” With Chief Ladoja now positioned as the natural successor, all eyes turn to the traditional institutions for a formal announcement that will usher in a new era for the ancient city of Ibadan.

by NANS Presidential Spokesperson (Comrade Alao John) In the realm of student leadership and youth engagement in Oyo State, one man continues to distinguish himself through unwavering dedication, visionary ideas, and a deep understanding of the student constituency Honourable Victor Olojede, the Senior Special Assistant on Students Affairs to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde. Oyo State Government Victor Dideoluwa As a student leader, having served as the former Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest and presently the Spokesman to the NANS President, I have had the privilege of interacting with several government representatives across Nigeria. Yet, Hon. Victor Olojede stands tall as a rare gem a bridge builder, a servant-leader, and a consistent advocate for students. Since his appointment in 2019, he has not only embraced his role with clarity and purpose but has gone further to redefine the office. Hon. Olojede has proven beyond doubt that leadership is not a position but a commitment to service. In his words and deeds, he embodies what John C. Maxwell meant when he said, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." He has successfully bridged the gap between Nigerian students in Oyo State and the state government. Through his office, student voices have not just been heard they have been respected, valued, and acted upon. He has consistently facilitated student-focused initiatives, ranging from capacity-building programs, educational support drives, scholarship facilitation, to open-door engagements that foster inclusivity and transparency. Leadership is about influence, and Hon. Victor Olojede's influence has been both inspiring and impactful. His approach to governance and youth relations reflects Abraham Lincoln’s timeless wisdom: “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” Through his efforts, he has helped thousands of students envision and actualize a brighter path. Beyond politics, he remains accessible, grounded, and committed to the ideals of development and equity within the student community. His humility is strength, and his dedication is a beacon for aspiring young leaders. As a proud stakeholder in the student movement in Oyo State and Nigeria at large, I make bold to say: the best gift Governor Seyi Makinde gave to the student constituency was appointing a man who truly understands us. Hon. Victor Olojede is not just an aide; he is our voice, our support system, and a model of what youth in governance should look like. I am proud to call him my SSA on Students Affairs a brother in the struggle and a servant-leader whose name history will not forget. By Owodunni Rasheed Adekunle The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to live up to its reputation as authentic “Agbọ tiku yọ”—a group that cannot stomach any positive development within the state. Their reaction, or more accurately, their total silence in the face of progressive achievements, exposes their deep-rooted aversion to anything that brings pride and joy to Kwarans. It is a well-known fact that under the failed leadership of the PDP, Kwara United was relegated, sending shockwaves through the state’s sporting community. However, today under a new administration, Kwara United made history by clinching a major cup title, an achievement that took decades to accomplish. But instead of joining well-meaning Kwarans in celebration, the PDP conveniently looked away. Not stopping there, Kwara United's Under-19 team also brought home a well-deserved trophy in their category, another proud moment for the state. Again, silence from the opposition. Kwara pupils have dominated the Junior Secondary School debate competition for three consecutive years under this administration, and for the first time ever, their senior counterparts also emerged winners. This unprecedented academic victory, which signals a new dawn for education in Kwara, should be a moment of collective pride. But, yet again, no word of commendation from the PDP. But Kwarans shouldn’t be surprised. This is the same PDP whose leaders once squandered SUBEB funds, an irresponsible act that denied the sons and daughters of nobody access to quality basic education. So how can anyone expect them to be happy now that a responsible and visionary leadership under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, has chosen to invest in the future of young Kwarans instead of using their future as political giveaways? Rather than recognize and celebrate the state’s giant strides in sports, education, and youth empowerment, the Kwara PDP prefers to amplify isolated security issues, often spinning them to fit their negative narrative. Their spokespersons and social media attack dogs have become merchants of bad news, deliberately ignoring the wins and pouncing on any opportunity to paint the state in a bad light. Thankfully, Kwarans have seen through their antics. The people know who truly has their interests at heart and who only seeks power for selfish gain. The era of using negativity as a political tool is long gone. Kwarans are wiser and will never allow the PDP’s brand of bitter, backward politics to take root again. Owodunni Rasheed Adekunle is the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Oyun Local Government, Ilemona.

The Association of Female Comrades (AFC), a youth-driven, women-focused non-governmental organisation, has kicked off a month-long national awareness campaign aimed at combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ritual killings across Nigeria. Running from July 1 to July 30, 2025, the campaign underscores what the AFC describes as an urgent national crisis that demands immediate and collective action. According to a statement issued by the group’s National Executive Council, the initiative will focus on community engagement and education while mobilising public support to challenge deeply rooted systems of violence and abuse. “This campaign is more than just awareness—it’s a call for action, unity, and change,” the statement read. “The time to break the silence is now.” The AFC, with its network of state coordinators and presence across various states, plans to implement the campaign through a range of activities including grassroots mobilisation, street sensitisation, public forums, school visits, and media outreach. Central to the campaign is the goal of informing, empowering, and mobilising communities to reject violence and uphold the rights and safety of women and girls. The association urged key stakeholders to play active roles: Government agencies should prioritise and enforce legal protections for women and girls. Community, traditional, and religious leaders must speak out against harmful practices. Media organisations are encouraged to spotlight survivor experiences and demand justice. Young Nigerians, especially women, are called upon to take leadership in driving community change. “Our vision is of a Nigeria where women and girls feel safe and free—where violence is not tolerated, and ritual killings are no longer part of our reality,” the AFC said. The organisation stressed that this initiative is not a symbolic show of protest, but a sustained movement towards structural transformation. “This is not just a march—it is the beginning of a national movement. And the time to act is now,” the statement concluded. The launch of the campaign reflects growing civic pressure to address the increasing rate of violence against women, as incidents of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and ritual killings continue to alarm citizens and human rights groups nationwide.
