Nairaland GeneralArmy Resource Centre Commends NYSC On Innovation by Ademola2003(op): 8:36am On Jan 12, 2025
The Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja has commended the National Youth Service Corps for its efforts in Corps empowerment, rural development, human capital development, numerous innovations in digitalization of operations among others.

It also said the involvement of Corps Members in series of national assignments like elections, population census and immunization programmes are worthy of commendation alongside the Scheme's roles in leadership training and fostering of national unity.

The Team Lead of the participants of Leadership and Strategic Studies Course 3/2024 from the resource centre, Major General AA Tarfa stated this when he led 35 participants comprising 1 Colonel and 34 Lieutenant Colonels on an academic tour to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

He thanked the Scheme for its continued support for the Nigerian Army Resource Centre.

General Tarfa said the tour would enable the participants to have a balanced knowledge of the operations of NYSC and also the prospects of the Scheme. He stated further that the visit would enable them to understand the roles of NYSC in national development and National unity.

In his remarks, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed added that the Scheme has empowered more than Three Million Ex-Corps Members through its Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training.

He said Corps Members at different times have also provided free medical services through the NYSC Health Initiative For Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme to millions of indigent Nigerians that cannot afford hospital bills.

General Ahmed stated further that the Legal Aids Corps, a Community Development Service group of Corps Lawyers have secured the release of many inmates who cannot afford to pay their court fines from different correctional centres across the country.

Nairaland GeneralRe:NYSC Issues Query To Over 200 Corps Members For Allegedly Skipping Christmas by Ademola2003(op): 1:17pm On Jan 11, 2025
The Management of National Youth Service Corps wishes to draw the attention of the general public to a misleading publication by an online medium on the above subject matter.

It is pertinent to note that, every Corps Member is at liberty to practice any religion of his/her choice, as allowed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria without coersion.

Additionally, the weekly Community Development Service and monthly General Community Development Service are part of the major activities that all Corps Members must partake in, throughout their service year, without which they are not qualified to collect the Certificate of National Service.

For the purpose of clarity, the affected Corps Members in Atiba did not participate in their scheduled Community Development Service activities and were also absent during the December 2024 headcount that was conducted to ascertain the number of Corps Members on ground in Atiba. Furthermore, they were also not in their respective places of Primary Assignment within the Local Government during the period in question.

Disturbingly, they all failed to obtain the written permission of the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator to travel outside the State between December 16, 2024 and January 6, 2025.

The queries issued to them by the Local Government Inspector, serves as a corrective mechanism in the Scheme and has nothing to do with the alleged Christmas Carol.

As a matter of fact, the National Youth Service Corps as a responsible organization operates within the confines of the Bye-Laws which not only guides the activities of all Corps Members but also stipulates penalties for every offence.

NYSC Management hereby reiterates its open door policy of good media relationship with members of the press towards a balanced reportage of NYSC activities and programmes, instead of publishing unverified and misleading information about the Scheme.

Members of the public are by this release enjoined to disregard the online publication with its erroneous intent to cause unnecessary religious apprehension among the public.

Nairaland GeneralOpinion: Preventing Stampede Tragedies In Nigeria by Ademola2003(op): 9:17am On Dec 27, 2024
The recent stampede that occurred in some parts of the country, such as Ibadan, Abuja and others, shows a critical failure in planning for the events and also safety management.

These incidents often occur in a place where there is relief distribution by religious groups, charity organisations and others. It's very sad to see many lives lost in preventable situations simply because basic precautions are overlooked.

Another critical issue is the rate of unemployment and poverty in the country. These also cause a lot of problems because people don't take their lives for fun. They do it because they are famished, struggling, and desperate for relief.

I urge the Government, the Nigerian forces, and the event organisers to please take precautions against stampede.

Firstly, I urged the Nigerian forces to train their officials on the ways to prevent crowds during a relief distribution because some of these stampedes also can be accredited to the force officials for not taking their jobs as they should.

Secondly, there should be public education or lectures on crowd safety. People should know what to do when in a crowded gathering, how to move safely and look out for others.

Lastly, The Government needs to provide more profitable employment opportunities, and empowerment to curb the high rate of unemployment in the country.

The keynote address at the colloquium was delivered by Professor Timothy Olarewaju, a renowned Consultant Nephrologist from the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

The Behavioral Center, Offa, marks a critical milestone in addressing mental health challenges in Kwara State and beyond. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the center offers counseling, therapy, and rehabilitation services to ensure accessible and affordable mental healthcare for the community.

This initiative reinforced the Galaxy Clique Offa’s commitment to holistic healthcare and community empowerment.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Aminah El-Imam, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, representing Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, commended the project.

She said: "Offa is known for excellence and high standards. Whenever we take on a project, we deliver world-class results. This center is a continuation of the excellence we are known for."

Dr. El-Imam also noted that other communities in Kwara State have sought advice on replicating such community-driven healthcare initiatives.

The colloquium’s theme drew attention to the rising burden of kidney disease in Nigeria. Professor Olarewaju highlighted that chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 23-46 million Nigerians, with many unaware of their condition. CKD disproportionately impacts young adults in their productive years and poses significant financial and social challenges due to its self-funded treatment nature.

He spoke on Symptoms of CKD, which included Loss of appetite, nausea, swelling, hypertension, drowsiness, and infections, as well as prevention which are early diagnosis, public awareness, and incorporating CKD screening into primary care.

He also recommended Improving accessibility to kidney care, including kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in the National Health Scheme (NHS), and increasing funding for kidney-related research.

He emphasized: "Management of advanced-stage kidney disease is capital-intensive, making prevention the most effective strategy."

Sir (Prince) Robert Olusoji Olagunju, the Aremo of Offaland and the Chairman of the event, praised the club for their dedication, stating: "This initiative showcases the excellence Offa is known for. On behalf of Olofa of Offa and the council, we express our gratitude."

Offa pharmacists, represented by Pharmacist Faremi Segun and Hajia Ganiya Arowosaye, applauded the Behavioral Center’s launch.

They, however, raised concerns about the availability of unregulated drugs, calling on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to curb the free flow of pharmaceuticals contributing to addiction.

The event drew notable attendees, including: Dr. Abdulmalik Abdulraheem, Secretary of the Kwara State Hospital Management Board; Alhaji Azeez Salako, President of the Offa Descendants Union; Barrister Segun Olawoyin, Chief Akinrogun of Offaland; Isiaka Opeloyeru Lawal, Deputy State Commander of Operations and Training, Kwara State of NDLEA among others.

Nairaland GeneralMoney Laundering: EFCC Arraigns Businessman, akindele Akintoye For $35m Fraud by Ademola2003(op): 9:10am On Dec 25, 2024
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, December 24, 2024, arraigned a businessman, Akindele Akintoye before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on charges bordering on money laundering and contract fraud.

Akintoye allegedly collected $35million from the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board to build a 2000 barrel-per-day refinery, jetty, gas plant, data center, and tank farm at Brass Free Trade Zone, Okpoama community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

He allegedly mooted the idea of the project to the Board, and the NCDMB embraced it with counterpart funding to the tune of $ 35 million. He allegedly received the funds through the bank account of Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited and funneled the funds into four of his companies: Platform Capital Investment Partners, Duport Midstream Company Ltd., Puisance Afrique Dynamics Ltd., Adamantine Petrochemical & Refinery Ltd, and Bureau de Change outlets

At the court sitting on Monday, EFCC counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, told the court that the defendant faced a four-count charge filed on November 19, 2024, and requested that the charges be read to the defendant.

One of the counts read: "That you, Akindele Akintoye, and Platform Capital Investment Partners Limited, between December 2020 and February 2021, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, indirectly retained the sum of $16,006,000 (Sixteen Million, Six Thousand United States Dollars), being part of the funds dishonestly converted from the money paid by the NCDMB to Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited as investment, knowing the said sum constituted proceeds of unlawful activity, thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act."

The defendant pleaded “not guilty” after the charges were read to him.

Given his “not guilty” plea, Iheanacho requested the court to remand Akintoye to a Correctional Centre and sought a trial date.

However, counsel to the defendant, Emmanuel Esadio, applied for bail, stating that the application was filed and served on the prosecution.

Justice Nwite, in his response, emphasized the importance of allowing the prosecution to respond to the bail application, noting that the law requires 48 hours before a bail application can be considered.

“Justice is tripartite, to the accused, the defendant, and society. I cannot shut out the prosecution, they must be heard,” the Judge said.

Esadio further requested that the defendant be remanded in EFCC custody, citing his client’s health issues and the need for easy access to legal counsel.

But Iheanacho opposed the request, arguing that the EFCC lacked adequate facilities and that Akintoye had demonstrated untrustworthiness, including allegedly retrieving his international passport after claiming it was in court custody.

“The defendant cannot be trusted. He has shown tendencies that suggest he may commit another crime. Additionally, there is no medical evidence before the court to support claims of ill health,” Iheanacho submitted.

After considering the arguments, Justice Nwite ordered Akintoye’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till December 31, 2024, for a hearing on the bail application.

Nairaland GeneralKey Facts About The Ojukwu Bunker by Ademola2003(op): 1:49am On Oct 25, 2024
Originally called the "Subterranean Office of the Government of Biafra," the Ojukwu Bunker was constructed in just 90 days, from April to June. The bunker descends to a depth of 26.9 feet and includes a parlor, a secretary's room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a storage area. After the war, the public affectionately renamed it the "Ojukwu Bunker."

The bunker was designed on April 3, 1968, by Frank Mbanefo Associates, with structural design carried out by Agbim and Partners. The construction was overseen by Engr. Joel Onyemelukwe, who is originally from Nnewi in Anambra State.

Nairaland GeneralThe Story Of Madam Efunroye Tinubu (1810 – 1887) by Ademola2003(op): 1:28am On Oct 25, 2024
Madam Efunroye Tinubu, after whom Tinubu Square in Lagos is named, was a prominent figure in Nigeria's history during the colonial era. Born in 1810 in Ojokodo—now part of Ogun State—she was an influential businesswoman and a powerful political figure, known for her staunch opposition to British colonial rule.

Initially named Efunporooye Osuntinubu Olumosa, she remarried in 1833 to Oba Adele Ajosun following the death of her first husband. After her marriage, she moved to Badagry with the exiled Oba, a traditional refuge for Lagos monarchs. In Badagry, she skillfully leveraged Adele’s connections to build a successful business empire centered on tobacco, salt, and the slave trade.

When Oba Adele was reinstated to the throne in 1835, he held the position until his death two years later. Throughout this time, Tinubu expanded her trading networks, establishing strong ties with both the expatriate community and local Yoruba populations across Lagos and Abeokuta. Following her second marriage to Yesufu Bada, also known as Obadina, who was a military captain, she continued to rise in influence.

Tinubu played a vital role in politics, helping her brother-in-law, Akitoye, ascend to the throne after Oba Oluwole. In 1851, when Akitoye ruled, he granted her advantageous commercial privileges, which allowed her to continue trading in slaves alongside firearms with Brazilian and Portuguese traders. She acquired land that is now part of both Tinubu Square and Kakawa Street in Lagos.

Her influence was so significant that in 1853, two local chiefs revolted against Akitoye, protesting the privileges she received. Following the British ban on the slave trade, Tinubu pivoted her business focus toward internal trade in commodities like palm oil, salt, pepper, and tobacco, ultimately becoming a leading middleman in Lagos by 1850.

Tinubu was instrumental in the politics of kingship, supporting Akitoye's son, Dosunmu, during his ascension to the throne in 1853. Under Dosunmu’s reign, she maintained a significant security force comprising slaves and often executed orders on the king's behalf. In 1855, she led a campaign against Brazilian and Sierra Leonean immigrants in Lagos, accusing them of undermining local customs and exerting their wealth against Dosunmu.

Feeling threatened by her assertive nationalism, British Consul Benjamin Campbell incited Dosunmu to expel Tinubu and her followers from Lagos to Abeokuta in 1856. Once in Abeokuta, she aligned herself with the United Board Management Government while expanding her business to include arms and ammunition. Her strategic contributions were vital during the Dahomey invasion of 1863, earning her the title of Iyalode (First Lady) in 1864, which heightened her political influence.

As an outspoken critic of colonial policies in Lagos, Madam Efunroye Tinubu marked a significant chapter in the resistance against British rule, being the first woman to take a proactive stand during this tumultuous period. She passed away in 1887 and was laid to rest at Ojokodo Quarters in Abeokuta. Today, Tinubu Square, formerly known as Independence Square, stands as a testament to her legacy.

Nairaland GeneralNNPP Alleges That INEC Is Showing Bias In Its Internal Crisis by Ademola2003(op): 1:31pm On May 19, 2024
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Sunday accused INEC of undue interference and taking sides in the party's internal leadership crisis

The party also advised INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu to look into alleged attendance of it's splinter group convention by the commission's staff, even when they were served with court notice challenging the illegal convention

In a statement signed by the NNPP National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday ,
the party insisted that INEC chairman must fish out the colluding staff and ensure he or she is punished.

It noted that INEC must remain neutral in the NNPP internal crisis as required by law.

"Without prejudice to the integrity, honour and leadership of the INEC chairman, we are using this medium to remind him that the successes and otherwise of electoral processes in Nigeria largely depend on the level of quality leadership of the commission under his watch.

"It is trite to note that INEC as a commission has the mandate to regulate and control electoral processes in Nigeria in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Electoral Guidelines.

"This shall be without prejudice to the partial autonomy and independence of political parties to regulate and control themselves in accordance with the party constitution."

The NNPP pointed out that the courts including the Supreme Court of Nigeria had made several pronouncements in relation to the liberty and authority of political parties on matters of self regulation and control of its affairs , administration and management.

"One begins to wonder why INEC as a commission, other than being neutral is found to be the contrary and taking sides over an internal matter of NNPP.

"And for the records, the federal high courts seated at Awka in Anambra state and Abuja have said that the crisis in NNPP should be resolved internally by members.

"We regret to note that Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso Senator and others expelled from our party have been deceiving the general public that the NNPP under the leadership of Major Gilbert Agbo lost in the various cases.

"One begins to wonder how the pronouncements of the courts that NNPP leadership crisis is an internal matter of the party translate to loss?

"The Federal High Court have jurisdiction over the party constitution to give direction. We have approached the Court of Appeal in that regard to demand for a clear statement as to how the internal crisis can be resolved and who does it."

According to it, under the constitution of the NNPP, it is the mandate and responsibility of the Founder and Members of the Board as the conscience of the party, to take responsibility and resolve the internal crisis .

"The court has to say so to add impetus and the force of the law to it to enable resolutions. Regret that Federal High Courts were not able to do so in the various judgments.

"On the part of INEC as a regulator, it shall be an oversight function to deploy alternative dispute resolution especially, when the matter is brought before it formally.

"Other than that, INEC is found attending and observing an illegal convention of the expelled members. INEC again should have the courage to respond to the letter of the Founder and Members of the Board to facilitate and order the board to take responsibility in resolving the internal crisis.

"And for the avoidance doubts, it is on record that Kwankwaso and his splinter group and INEC were duly served with court notices against the illegal convention and yet it held and INEC erroneously attended.

"However, we are meant to understand that most times, the chairman of INEC may be shielded from facts of issues and sectional heads tend to do things on their own without the knowledge of the chairman.

"We shall therefore advise the chairman INEC to step up his supervisory role in the management and administration of the commission's statutory responsibilities and know when to evoke his residual powers to act."

The party, therefore, appealed to Yakubu to attend to the letters written to him by the Board of Trustees of NNPP, requesting that while the cases are ongoing in the courts the life of NNPP should be preserved in the hands of the Board.
