In 2014, Dr. Stella Adadevoh (1956–2014) played a critical role in preventing a deadly Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. At 58 years old, she made the ultimate sacrifice to protect millions.

When Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American diplomat, was admitted to First Consultants Medical Centre in Lagos with what was initially thought to be malaria, she quickly recognized the symptoms of Ebola and took immediate action.

Despite immense pressure to discharge him, she insisted on quarantining him, enforcing strict containment measures that ultimately saved countless lives. She also alerted the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), triggering a swift national response, including contact tracing and quarantine protocols.

Dr. Adadevoh did not physically restrain Sawyer, but her medical authority and firm decision ensured he remained isolated. Unfortunately, while caring for him before his diagnosis was confirmed, she and several other medical staff members were exposed to the virus. She later contracted Ebola and passed away on August 19, 2014, at the age of 58.

Because of her courage and sacrifice, Nigeria was able to contain the outbreak, limiting it to just 20 cases and 8 deaths—one of the most effective Ebola responses in history. Her legacy continues to inspire public health professionals and strengthen infectious disease control worldwide.

Among those who contracted Ebola while caring for Patrick Sawyer at First Consultants Medical Centre, four members of her team passed away, including:
• Dr. Stella Adadevoh (lead physician)
• Nurse Justina Ejelonu
• Nurse Ebele Ugochukwu
• Dr. Akinniyi Fadipe

However, some staff survived the virus, including Dr. Ada Igonoh, who became one of the first Nigerians to recover from Ebola. She later became an advocate for infectious disease awareness and control.

It was learnt that the incident which took place on Tuesday at the premises of the station located along Ijoka Road in Akure has further exposed the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria.

Mr Tokunbo Opebi, the acting chairman of an Akure-based radio station Breeze 91.9 FM, has been accused of beating and assaulting a former member of staff of the station Mercy Okafor for tendering his resignation letter.

It was learnt that the incident which took place on Tuesday at the premises of the station located along Ijoka Road in Akure has further exposed the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria.

Source privy to the incident mentioned that Okafor joined the station as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) corps member but was offered employment by the station after she completed her service.

“Mercy Okafor is a bundle of talent. She is Igbo but she has a Bachelor’s degree in Yoruba language.I heard her mum is from Ile-Ife; her versatility and her command of Yoruba Language attracted people to her. They begged her to stay after her service.” the source said.

According to the source, when the station's accountant, Bisola Agbayewa, gave birth and went on maternity leave, Okafor was asked to fill in for her, which she did admirably.

When the leave expired, the accountant did not return and instead resigned, so Okafor became both an accountant and an OAP at the station.

"Breeze 91.9 FM has the worst payment package of any radio station in Akure, Ondo State's capital," the source claimed.

Up to 2024, some OAP earn as little as 25,000 Naira per month, while temporary workers are paid as little as 10,000 Naira, in direct violation of Nigerian labour rules and the Minimum Wage Act.

These payments are not made on time or as scheduled. According to a credible source, some of the workers had not received full payment for the month of December as of February 5th, 2025.

According to the source, Okafor submitted her resignation letter and notified the station's management of her plan to leave the organisation. When she finally turned in the company's data, all hell broke loose.

The chairman reportedly told her she should have stayed until the station found a replacement, but she told him she had already given the station notice, which they had ignored.

Infuriated by her courage, Tokunbo allegedly withdrew his shoe and struck the lady in the head before unleashing a barrage of blows on her.

“It took the Intervention of Bimpa Dele-Mogaji and Joyin Johnson to free Okafor from the hands of Tokunbo who was throwing punches at the young lady,” the source said.

“Tokunbo is responsible for almost all the woes that have happened to that station. If you stay you won’t get paid regularly, if you leave you might get arrested on trumped up allegations. Who has he not arrested and detained, from former engineer to marketer to OAP?" he lamented.


“If you honourably tendered your resignation letter before the end of the month you will never get the salary for that month or any other outstanding pay."

Mercy Ekene Okafor who is the victim of the recent physical assault has reportedly received treatments for internal injuries sustained from the assault.

Her mother and some relatives came to Akure on Thursday to take her home to Ile-Ife for treatment.

“No allegation of financial misappropriation was brought against her, Tokunbo simply said he beat her up like that because he didn’t like the tone with which she responded to him," the source said.

Attempts made to reach the general manager of the station Sunday Ajongbolo and the acting chairman were unsuccessful.

I'm not saying they became rich out of what I sent. Nairalanders are entitled. I just wanted to brighten people's day. Even if I had sent more, they would still complain. I sent 85k to someone right here on NL a few years ago upon seeing her thread to pay off a debt of about 40k. She claimed a bank teller took the money, that she didn't receive it, then said afterall it was only 85k I had sent her. Nigerians are an entitled bunch. It doesn't matter how much you send someone, a stranger for that matter, to help them, they will still complain. Secondly, I didn't even bring up the giveaway in my OP, did I? Or where in my post did I mention it? I had to mention it in my response to @abba190b who quoted me out if his painment that has to do with the giveaway. He mentioned me the other day that the money I sent has finished and I ignored him, then upon seeing this thread saw it as an opportunity to attack. If someone attacks me, I'm going to stand up for myself. I actually avoided the giveway thread once the giveaway was done. It was when someone posted in there to quote me and say rubbish that I posted in there again. Some things I can ignore, others I'll stand up for myself. Some of you think you can run around on Nairaland and insult people anyhow and the person should just keep quiet. Nonsense. Lastly, I didn't do the giveaway for anyone to worship me.
