Nairaland / General / Rooney: Park ‘just As Important To Man Utd As Cristiano Ronaldo’ by Adewalenle: 1:27am On May 19, 2020
Wayne Rooney believes Park Ji-Sung was just as important as Cristiano Ronaldo during Manchester United’s glittering spell under Sir Alex Ferguson. SportVectru.com

Ronaldo is credited with playing a starring role in United’s memorable triumphs – including the 2007/08 campaign, in which they secured a Premier League and Champions League double.

The Portuguese superstar scored an incredible 42 goals in all competitions that year, a tally that ultimately helped him claim his first of five Ballon d’Or accolades in 2008.

But Rooney, who was also an integral member of Ferguson’s star-studded squad, has explained why Park deserves praise for his part too.

Rooney told The Times : “Like a lot of people I’ve been watching The Last Dance, the Netflix series centred on Michael Jordan. It’s especially interesting because of my experience of American sport: how it works in terms of contracts, the media and the fans.

“A fascinating part is following how Jordan, the superstar, becomes the total team player because he wants to win and realises that only the team can get him there.

“It makes me think about my own career. It’s crazy but if you mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo to a 12-year-old, they would immediately say, “Yeah, he was a brilliant player for Manchester United,” but if you said “Park Ji-sung” they may not know who he was.

“Yet all of us who played with Park know he was almost as important to our success.

Nairaland / General / Reason Why So Many Professional Football Player Go Broke by Adewalenle: 5:31pm On May 05, 2020
According to Adam Fayed, Imagine you are a young man who is bought up in poverty or with little money – which is the norm in the UK and many countries for footballers.

Then at 18, 20 or 22, you start to earn millions if you are a top footballer.
sportvectru

Imagine all the hangers on. All the people that want to take advantage of a young man, with little financial education in most cases, with a lot of money.

It takes a very mature individual to realise “hey I will only earn like this until age 35 or so, so I shouldn’t get used to this kind of income”.

What often happens is people spend more as they earn more, and then the money decrease after retirement at 35 or so.

They are used to earning more, so go broke in about 40% of cases.

There is another reason as well. Only the top players earn millions.

Those in the second tier divisions, often earn much less. If you are “only” earning $300,000-$700,000 a year, you can’t retire at 35, unless:

You were very frugal in your playing days
You had a very good investment habits
You have planned out a relatively cheap retirement destination to make sure your money will last for 50+ years with the passive income from investing
I have interviewed several ex footballers who weren’t famous, but earned good money.

Most still need to work as they didn’t earn enough in their playing days to retire in their 30s.

So they need to continue to work as they are broke or close too broke.

Nairaland / General / You Might Watch Every EPL Games On Youtube by Adewalenle: 5:11pm On May 05, 2020
The conclusion of the Premier League season could be made free to air on YouTube, according to reports.

As discussions over ‘Project Restart’ continues with all top-flight clubs, The Sun claims plans to make the games viewable by large audiences are being proposed.
https://sportvectru.com/you-might-watch-every-epl-games-on-youtube/

Sky Sports and BT Sport are understood to have, under their existing agreements, rights to show around half of the remaining 92 games before the season was put on hiatus.

With all games set to be played behind closed doors, should the season restart, over the course of seven weeks, those at the top of the domestic game want fans to have access to every game.
Plans would see no games played at the same time, to increase the potential audience.

With traditional terrestrial channels not expected to be a viable option, Sky Sports and BT Sports’ YouTube channels could be used. https://sportvectru.com/you-might-watch-every-epl-games-on-youtube/

Nairaland / General / John Barnes: ‘liverpool Need Another Forward But Mbappe May Not Be Right Fit’ by Adewalenle: 10:19am On May 04, 2020
Liverpool “need to sign another forward” but Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe may not be the right fit for the club, according to John Barnes.

Barnes is not certain that the France international would slot into Jurgen Klopp’s line up seamlessly though, highlighting his lack of work when out of possession as a possible cause for concern.

“They’ll need to sign another forward at some point in case one of the front three leaves but it will have to fit what Klopp wants,” the former Liverpool midfielder told the Daily Mail.

“Kylian Mbappe is fantastic on the ball but would he do the other stuff? I’d suggest if you’re a 21-year-old superstar, your attitude isn’t going to change.

Barnes went on to stress how “important” Firmino is to the current Liverpool squad, despite the fact his numbers for goals and assists consistently fall below Mane and Salah’s.

“I think he is the most important forward in what he gives the team,” he said. “He gives Liverpool invention in tight areas.”

Barnes added on Klopp’s unique selection and recruitment policy: “Klopp signs players to fit his system, not only because they looked great at their previous clubs.

“Ninety-nine per cent of people wouldn’t pick Henderson and Wijnaldum above Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva or even Jack Grealish or James Maddison, but they work for Liverpool. sportvectru.com

Sports / 10 Key Points Why Chelsea Should Not Buy Jerome Boateng by Adewalenle: 4:21am On Apr 09, 2020
Here are 10 key points to explain why Chelsea would dodge a huge bullet in their own by dropping their reported interest in Jerome Boateng:

1. Despite his glorious past, which includes a Champions League winner’s medal with Bayern Munich and a FIFA World Cup title with the German national team, Boateng is way past his prime at 31 and simply a shadow of his former rock-solid self.
2. The central defender has looked completely off-colour, especially against top-quality opposition, in recent seasons and his dip in form has seen him slip down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena.
3. Boateng has only started 15 games in the Bundesliga this season so far – the last time he started more than 20 league fixtures for the Bavarian giants was way back in the 2014-15 campaign.
4.Indeed, the 31-year-old could still add that experience and winning mentality to a rather youthful backline at Stamford Bridge but his lack of pace and agility means that Boateng will probably be a glaring misfit for Lampard’s risk-reward brand of football that often involves playing a high defensive line.
