Health10 Effects Of Alcohol on The Body by Adieza(op):
It's no secret that alcohol consumption can cause major health problems, including cirrhosis of the liver and injuries sustained in automobile accidents. But if you think liver disease and car crashes are the only health risks posed by drinking, think again: Researchers have linked alcohol consumption to more than 60 diseases.

Here are 10 conditions linked to chronic drinking.

1. Anemia

Heavy drinking can cause the number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells to be abnormally low. This condition, known as anemia, can trigger a host of symptoms, including fatigue, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness.

2. Cancer

"Habitual drinking increases the risk of cancer," says Jurgen Rehm, PhD, chairman of the University of Toronto's department of addiction policy and a senior scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, also in Toronto. Scientists believe the increased risk comes when the body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a potent carcinogen. Cancer sites linked to alcohol use include the mouth, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), esophagus, liver, breast, and colorectal region. Cancer risk rises even higher in heavy drinkers who also use tobacco.

3. Cardiovascular disease

Heavy drinking, especially bingeing, makes platelets more likely to clump together into blood clots, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. In a landmark study published in 2005, Harvard researchers found that binge drinking doubled the risk of death among people who initially survived a heart attack.

Heavy drinking can also cause cardiomyopathy, a potentially deadly condition in which the heart muscle weakens and eventually fails, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation, in which the heart's upper chambers (atria) twitch chaotically rather than constrict rhythmically, can cause blood clots that can trigger a stroke. Ventricular fibrillation causes chaotic twitching in the heart's main pumping chambers (ventricles). It causes rapid loss of consciousness and, in the absence of immediate treatment, sudden death.

4. Seizures

Heavy drinking can cause epilepsy and can trigger seizures even in people who don't have epilepsy. It can also interfere with the action of the medications used to treat convulsions.

5. Cause Depression

It's long been known that heavy drinking often goes hand in hand with depression, but there has been debate about which came first -- the drinking or the depression. One theory is that depressed people turned to alcohol in an attempt to "self-medicate" to ease their emotional pain. But a large study from New Zealand showed that it was probably the other way around -- that is, heavy drinking led to depression.

Research has also shown that depression improves when heavy drinkers go on the wagon, Saitz says.

6. Cirrhosis

Alcohol is toxic to liver cells, and many heavy drinkers develop cirrhosis, a sometimes-lethal condition in which the liver is so heavily scarred that it is unable to function. But it's hard to predict which drinkers will develop cirrhosis. "Some people who drink huge amounts never get cirrhosis, and some who don't drink very much do get it," Saitz says. For some unknown reason, women seem to be especially vulnerable.

7. High blood pressure

Alcohol can disrupt the sympathetic nervous system, which, among other things, controls the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in response to stress, temperature, exertion, etc. Heavy drinking -- and bingeing, in particular -- can cause blood pressure to rise. Over time, this effect can become chronic. High blood pressure can lead to many other health problems, including kidney disease, heart disease, and stroke.

8. Pancreatitis

In addition to causing stomach irritation (gastritis), drinking can inflame the pancreas. Chronic pancreatitis interferes with the digestive process, causing severe abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea --and "it's not fixable," Saitz says. Some cases of chronic pancreatitis are triggered by gallstones, but up to 60% stem from alcohol consumption.

9. Increase in Sugar levels

The pancreas helps regulate your body’s insulin use and response to glucose. When your pancreas and liver aren’t functioning properly, you run the risk of experiencing low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. A damaged pancreas may also prevent the body from producing enough insulin to utilize sugar. This can lead to hyperglycemia, or too much sugar in the blood. If your body can’t manage and balance your blood sugar levels, you may experience greater complications and side effects related to diabetes. It’s important for people with diabetes or hypoglycemia to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol.

10. Dependency

Some people who drink heavily may develop a physical and emotional dependency on alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal can be difficult and life-threatening. You often need professional help to break an alcohol addiction. As a result, many people seek medical detoxification to get sober. It’s the safest way to ensure you break the physical addiction. Depending on the risk for withdrawal symptoms, detoxification can be managed on either an outpatient or inpatient basis.

AgricultureFG Resuscitates Export Grant With N13.2bn – Udoma by Adieza(op): 11:17am On Nov 20, 2018
The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udoma, has said the Federal Government has reactivated the Export Expansion Grant (EEG) with the sum of N13.28bn to galvanize exports of locally produced goods.
According to him, the said amount was captured in the 2018 budget currently being implemented by the Federal Government.
The EEG, established through the Export Incentives and Miscellaneous Provisions Act of 1986 is an initiative of the Federal Government designed to support the exporters of non-oil products, including agro-commodities in order to cushion the effects of infrastructural deficiencies and reduce the overall unit cost of production.
The programme had been suspended in 2013, due to perceived abuse by beneficiaries in claiming the grants.

Health13 Health Benefits Of Watermelon On the Body You Should Know by Adieza(op):
1. Antioxidants: Vitamin C and Lycopene
When you bite into a cool wedge of watermelon, you probably do not have antioxidants on your mind. You might be pleasantly surprised to discover that watermelon is a great source of the free radical fighting warriors, specifically in the form of vitamin C and lycopene.
Free radicals are renegade molecules that are missing an electron. To once again make themselves complete, that go off in search of an electron to steal from another complete molecule. Antioxidants, like vitamin C and lycopene intervene by providing one of their extra electrons to the free radical, thereby neutralizing it and preventing it from causing cellular damage.
2. Protection Against Diabetes
When you consume watermelon, your kidneys convert one amino acid, L-citrulline, into another amino acid, L-arginine. The one-two punch of these two amino acids has many health benefits, not the least of which is protection against the development of diabetes.
Studies show that L-arginine supplementation is beneficial in regulating glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. While you might not be able to get as much of the amino acid from watermelon as you might through supplementation, it is noting that foods that contain this compound can be a beneficial part of a diet designed to fight against diabetes.
3. L-citrulline for Recovery
The next time you reach for a post work out drink that contains L-citrulline, reach for a wedge of watermelon instead. The restorative amino acid helps accelerate the rate of lactic acid removal from your muscles, giving you a quicker recovery time after your tough workout. Watermelon also has a high water content, so it will help you rehydrate in one of the most delicious ways possible.
4. Heart Healthy Summertime Treat
Lycopene is responsible for the pinkish red hue of watermelons. It is also responsible for every shade of red tomato from the palest pink to the most garnet like reds. Did you know that there is more lycopene in watermelon than tomatoes? Almost one and half times more.
Lycopene has been proven to reduce cholesterol levels and the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in people who either take supplements or consume lycopene rich foods on a regular basis.
5. Reduction of Severity and Frequency of Asthma Attacks
Interesting new research is pointing towards a connection between vitamin C and asthma. Current research indicates that low levels of vitamin C correlates to an increase of asthma attacks, while higher levels of vitamin C are tied to a reduction in asthma symptoms.
What to do? Eat more vitamin C rich foods, such as watermelon which has nearly 40% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C in just one thick, juicy wedge.
6. Helps You Lose Weight Faster
If you are trying to lose weight, you know that we all have those triggers that send us down the road of temptation, longing after something that we know isn’t the healthiest option. For many people, that thing is sweets. It isn’t just about the sweetness of sugary treats, but also about the texture and the mouthfeel. This is one reason why a strawberry might not satisfy you mentally in the same way as cheesecake.
However, watermelon brings something new to the dessert table. The texture of watermelon is almost like that of a dessert that melts in your mouth. It can be sliced and presented on a plate just like a piece of cake or pie. Watermelon satisfies the emotional craving as well as the physical one.
One more reason that watermelon helps you lose weight? Watermelon is mostly water, combined with an honorable fiber content. These combination fills you up and leaves you satisfied longer than any sugary, fat laden dessert.
7. The Potassium in Watermelon Protects Nerve Function
Watermelon is rich in potassium, which helps to regulate nerve function by facilitating the passage of electrical impulses and messages. Too little potassium can cause lack of nerve function, numbness and tingling. If you suffer from night time leg cramps, a potassium deficiency might also be the cause. Steer clear from these unpleasant side effects by enjoying a cup of watermelon which has approximately 170 mg of potassium.
8. Eradicate Inflammation
Chronic, systemic inflammation is known to be a precursor to many of the serious diseases that we suffer from today including diabetes, heart disease, fibromyalgia and even cancer. Because inflammation can have such a detrimental effect on the body, it is necessary to take steps to fight it in every possible way. One of the most effective means of fighting inflammation is through dietary sources.
Watermelon contains the amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline, two known powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Keeping cool with watermelon can help cool down inflammation as well.
9. Helps Balance Your pH
The foods we eat and the drinks we enjoy all fall somewhere along the pH scale. Some are considered acidic, while others are considered basic or alkaline. The human body regulates itself at a very specific 7.4. On a scale of 0-14, the lower the number the more acidic it is. As you can see, the body falls just on the side of being slightly more alkaline. The problem is that the average diet filled with saturated fats, sugars and processed foods tends to be more acidic, which can throw off the balance of the body’s pH. Major pH imbalances are rare and serious, but minor shifts into the acidic zone can leave you feeling off.
Watermelon is an alkaline food, which helps to neutralize the acidic components in our diets, and thereby helping our bodies maintain a proper pH level.
10. Prevents Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
Every summer, thousands fall victim to heat stroke, with more than two hundred people dying from the condition annually in the united states. Heat stroke is not just about being a little overheated. It is a serious condition that requires medical attention.
Watermelon, which is mostly water and contains electrolytes can help negate the effects of the heat in the summertime and potentially reduce the risk of suffering heat stroke. If someone looks like they aren’t handling the heat well, offer them some watermelon. If they appear to be suffering from the symptoms of heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately.
11. Reduces Your Risk of Developing Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is a condition that is suspected of affecting anywhere from 20-25% of the population. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, infection and has even been connected to other health conditions such as heart disease.
Proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are your primary tools against periodontal disease, but adequate amounts of vitamin C in the diet has been shown to inhibit the development or worsening of the disease. Watermelon is a great source of vitamin C. Sink those teeth into a slice of watermelon to keep your smile healthy and bright.
12. Aid Digestion
So many of us go through the day not taking the time to drink enough water, so that we are in a perpetual state of mild dehydration. You might not really notice it because you are not necessarily thirsty, however you might suffer from mild, chronic health side effects like headaches, fatigue and uncomfortable constipation.
Your digestive system need water to help digest foods and push them through. You also need fiber to help with this process. Watermelon contains both, making it a perfect digestive treat. For something extra special, try infusing a cup of water with chunks of watermelon and fresh mint to feel super refreshed while soothing your digestive system.
13. Watermelon Aid The Kidney

During the average day, you are exposed to countless toxins. Some of them come from the foods you eat or the air outside. More come from unsuspected places inside your own home or workplace. Regardless of their source, your kidneys do a lot of work to keep you healthy by eliminating these toxins from your system.
Certain nutrients found in watermelon can help support the kidneys throughout this process. The two main toxin fighting nutrients in watermelon are calcium and potassium. Before heading out in the morning, fill up a bowl with fresh watermelon to nibble on throughout the day. Your kidneys will thank you for it tomorrow.
Conclusion
Watermelon is a delicious, nutritious treat. The next time you see a platter full of thick slices, go ahead and grab one. You have thirteen amazing reasons not to say no.

AgricultureFarmers Want FG To Ban Maize Importation by Adieza(op): 2:48am On Nov 19, 2018
Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) has called on the Federal Government to ban the importation of maize into the country to encourage local production.
Alhaji Bello Abubakar, the National President of the association, made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Sunday.
Abubakar was reacting to a recent publication by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) on a request by Grand Cereals Limited to import maize into the country.
He said the move was `unpatriotic’ and targeted at thwarting the efforts of farmers and the government toward achieving self-sufficiency in maize production.
According to him, farmers produce enough and better maize to feed the country than what is being imported.
“Our last year’s production was 15 million tonnes and this year, we produced 20 million tonnes of maize and the required quantity for all maize processors in Nigeria is about eight million tonnes.
“Government intervention in the agricultural sector has put in place the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) to encourage local production of agricultural commodities including maize.
“MAAN is executing the ABP in 19 states which has empowered about 100,000 on and off farm employment.
“This contribution of MAAN, if complemented by other large scale maize grain users, will create more than one million on and off farm employment in the maize value chain.
“Therefore, we request that the importation of maize grain in any form is considered counter-productive to agricultural development in Nigeria and should be discouraged in its entirety,’’ he said.
On armyworm devastation of maize farms, Abubakar said that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), had put in place measures to address the disease.
“Members of MAAN were trained and pesticides, fertiliser, seeds were given to them by the Federal Government and FAO to manage the pest.
“ This year, there is no infestation of armyworm like last year,’’ he said.
He however, appealed to companies who involved in maize importation to provide their preferred maize seedlings to local farmers to grow, to encourage production of improved varieties.
Mr Rufus Ebegba, the Director General of NBMA, said the agency had received a request by Grand Cereals Limited to import maize into the country.
Ebegba, however, disclosed that the permit had not been granted for the maize import.
“It is true but the permit has not been granted,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MAAN was established to provide research on maize production, quality input to farmers, coordinate between farmers and the government.
MAAN is made up of maize scientists and researchers, input suppliers, service providers, farmers, marketers, maize suppliers and processors.
The association, which has its presence in the 36 states and FCT, has over 10 million registered farmers and members.

Agriculture5 Ways To Make Your Pig Grow Quickly by Adieza(op): 2:30am On Nov 19, 2018
Whether you're bringing up a herd or just a couple of hogs, follow these five techniques to keep your pigs happy on the farm.

1. Feed them right:

Not every bag of pig feed is perfect for your swine. N.C. State University Professor and Swine Nutritionist Eric van Heugten says that different life stages require different nutrients. "The greatest bang for your buck would be to go to at least two diets: One for young pigs and lactating sows, and one for older pigs and gestating sows."

2. Choose the best supplements:

While you can pork up your porker by providing it with ample food, nutritious supplements are key to overall health and building muscle bulk. van Heugten points out the power of selecting the amino acid lysine as a diet supplement. "Farmers should carefully evaluate the diets to make sure they meet the amino acid requirements of the pig," he says. "Lysine is the amino acid that needs to be supplemented first, because it is usually limiting growth of the pig." Read a more detailed study from Gary L. Cromwell, a professor in swine nutrition at the University of Kentucky here (Amino Acid Supplements For Pigs).

3. A healthy pig is a happy pig:

Janet Archer, education and outreach specialist for the N.C. Pork Council, knows the benefits of having happy, healthy pigs. "We assess animal well-being by how well animals produce." Archer notes a few basic husbandry skills can make for a happy home: clean water, an adequate, well-balanced diet and adequate ventilation. She also points out one very important task to maintaining hogs' long-term well-being: record keeping. "Farmers must have a record-keeping system to establish a baseline for their production numbers, so they can track continuous improvement." Alabama A&M and Auburn University have put out some nice Swine Production Records, which can be helpful when trying to organize your records.

4. Understand your pigs:

Understanding a pig's "point of balance" can give farmers and pigs peace of mind, Archer explains. "The point of balance is around the animal's shoulder: If we touch the animal behind her shoulder, she will move forward, and if we touch her in front of her shoulder, she will back up. These two tools help us to keep animals moving in the direction in which we want them to move." In addition, mechanisms like pig rings can help keep your livestock under control.

5. Minimize stress on your livestock:

Transportation can be stressful for animals and humans, but it is crucial to minimize that stress in order to maximize your pig farming profit, and everyone's well-being. "Minimizing stress starts long before we move the animals," says Archer. "It's important to walk through the pens and handle the pigs to get them used to positive human interaction." Of course, when it comes to the animal getting used to anything, the earlier the better.

Health9 Health Benefits Of Beans You Should Know by Adieza(op): 1:59am On Nov 19, 2018
Beans are seeds from the Fabaceae family, commonly known as the legume, pea, or bean family. They are an affordable source of protein, fiber, and vitamins that offer many health benefits.

They usually grow in pods, which are capsules with several beans inside. These pods or capsules develop from flowers. Other legumes include peas, peanuts, and lentils

In this article, learn about nine health benefits of beans, including getting more protein and reducing the risk of heart disease.
9 Different type of beans include:
lima beans
black beans
black-eyed peas
soybeans
kidney beans
garbanzo beans
navy beans
pinto beans
red beans

Health benefits of beans

Beans offer several health benefits, including:

1. Protein source

Adding beans to grains can turn an incomplete protein into a complete one.

Protein is a vital nutrient that plays a key role in virtually everything the body does. Beans are high in amino acids, the building blocks of protein.

Protein sources can be divided into two different categories: complete and incomplete. Animal products, soy, and quinoa are all complete proteins, which means they contain all nine amino acids.

Out of all the types of beans, only soybeans contain all nine amino acids. Incomplete proteins can be easily combined with nuts, seeds, dairy, or grains at a single meal or over various meals throughout the day to make complete proteins.

For example, a person can eat beans with rice or couscous. Even having black beans at lunch and then almonds or cheese later in the day can ensure people get complete proteins.

Beans make an excellent source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. They are also lower in calories and saturated fat than some other protein sources, such as dairy products.

2. Nutrient dense food

Beans contain several vital nutrients, including folate. Folate can help prevent neural tube defects in a fetus during pregnancy.

Dried beans contain nearly double the folate that canned beans contain, so it is better to cook them from their dried form. However, canned beans still contain more folate than many foods.

Not getting enough folate can cause several symptoms, including: weakness, fatigue, heart palpitations, loss of appetite, irritability.
Other important nutrients found in beans include: Zinc, Iron, Magnesium and fiber.

3. Antioxidant

Beans are rich in a type of antioxidant called polyphenols. Antioxidants fight the effects of free radicals, which are chemicals that affect a wide range of processes in the body, from physical aging to cancer and inflammation.

4. Better heart health

People who consume beans may be less likely to die of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular health problem.

A 2013 analysis of previous studies found a clear correlation between eating beans and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.

Other research suggests that beans may lower cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and heart attacks.

5. Reduced risk of cancer

Some studies have shown that beans act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These effects could reduce the risk of cancer.

Research published in 2015 analyzed whether beans might have antioxidant properties that fight intestinal cancer. Black beans were shown to have the highest antioxidant activity.

A 2016 study also found that chemicals in Northeast China black beans could slow the growth of colorectal cancer by damaging cancer cells.

6. Diabetes and glucose metabolism

Beans may help stabilize blood glucose levels or even prevent diabetes. Beans are high in fiber, which can help lower blood glucose.

A 2015 study in mice found that a chemical found in soybean leaves could help the body maintain healthy glucose levels.

Soybeans also support the healthy functioning of pancreatic cells. The pancreas produces insulin, which regulates blood sugar.

7. Preventing fatty liver

Fatty liver is a metabolic disorder that occurs when fats accumulate in the liver.

Research published in 2016 found that adzuki beans improve the accumulation of fat in the liver of mice. This result suggests that these beans might preserve liver health and reduce the risk of fatty liver, although more studies in humans are needed.

8. Controlling appetite

The fiber and healthy starches in beans can help prevent food cravings. People may feel fuller after consuming beans, which may prevent overeating and even help with weight loss.

9. Improving gut health

Research has shown a variety of beans, especially black beans, enhance gut health by improving intestinal barrier function, and increasing the number of healthy bacteria. This may help prevent gut-associated diseases.
