11 Things You Should Know About the Recently Unveiled World Tallest Statue in India. By Yakubu Jimoh John 1. India has unveiled the world's tallest statue, which cost £330 million, $430m, 29.9bn rupees. 2. The giant bronze statue, known as the Statue of Unity, is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York, making it the tallest in the world, That makes the mega statue almost 200 feet higher than the world's next largest, the Spring Temple Buddha in China, which stands at about 420 feet. The new statue in India is also nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, which is 305 feet tall. 3. British Conservative MPs have recently condemned the construction, after official figures revealed that Britain donated over £1 billion to India while the country was spending £330 million on the building. 7. AGRA Innovate West Africa expo will host the agribusiness leaders and stakeholders from Nigeria and beyond at the Landmark Centre, Victoria Island in Lagos, from 27 to 28 November 2018. The event will be held under the theme: “Food Security: The role of finance in the creation of commercial opportunities for agricultural value chain stakeholder operations.” The 2018 expo, organised by Informa and Contact Consulting Nigeria, marks the fifth edition of the event, with growing emphasis on thematic conference and seminars on topical issues. This year’s event serves as a high level platform for product exhibition, business-to-business linkage, deal making, networking, technology transfer, knowledge exchange, public-private collaboration and policy discourse among participants drawn from the agribusiness community, academia, advocacy groups, development practitioners, policy experts and high calibre government officials from within and outside Nigeria. Over 5,000 exhibition visitors have registered online and attendance is free for online registered delegates. Governor John Kayode Fayemi, who has confirmed his attendance as the Special Guest of Honour, and is leading a high level delegation from Ekiti State, will lead the way for other states’ chief executives on how to turn agricultural prospects into prosperity as he addresses agribusiness stakeholders on potentials for agribusiness partnerships. Governor Fayemi has indicated that his government will make agriculture a top priority in Ekiti State. Confirmed speakers at the event are Mr. Michel Deelen, Deputy Head of Mission, Royal Netherlands Embassy, who will deliver an address the audience on emerging potential partnership opportunities between Nigeria and the Netherlands; Vanessa Adams, Vice President, Country Support and Delivery, AGRA (Kenya); Alex Elphistone, Programme Director, Adam Smith International; Fatima Ali Mohammed, CEO Brand Warrior; Ade Adefeko, VP OLAM (Nigeria); Nneka Eze, Country Director, Dalberg Global Advisors; and Dr. Olusegun Ojo, Director General, National Agricultural Seeds Council (Abuja). Mrs Sarah Alade, former Deputy Governor of Central Bank Nigeria, will deliver this year’s keynote address. At the last year’s Agra Innovate expo, Chief Onikepo Akande, former Minister of Trade and Investment, who gave a keynote address, emphasised the need for Nigerian and West African farmers to use modern agricultural tools to boost food production. She expressed concerns over massive wastage of food after harvest, saying that although much food is being produced through the efforts of peasant farmers, so much goes into waste from the field to the table. “After the success of last year’s Agra Innovate in Nigeria, we are ensuring that the upcoming exhibition will again have the great ambience all attendees have previously experienced. The seminars have consistently been the best in terms of layout, facilities and hospitality. It will be the one place this year where the whole agriculture industry will come together to learn and do business.” states Folusho Olaniyan OON, Programme Director, Agra Innovate West Africa. http://www.agricinfo.com/2018/11/fayemi-lead-delegation-to-agriculture.html?m=0

Zobo plant The Coordinating Director of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Dr Vincent Isegbe, has disclosed plans by the Federal Government to resume the export of hibiscus (zobo leaves) to Mexico. Dr Isegbe disclosed this during a visit to the agency by the Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Marco Antonio Garcia Blanco, at the weekend in Abuja He said that the issue of Trogoderma granarium had been resolved in collaboration with stakeholders across the value chain, paving the way for Nigeria to start trade with the largest importer of Nigerian hibiscus again. NAQS had suspended hibiscus export to Mexico following the detection of the storage pest in some hibiscus consignments from Nigeria. Dr Isegbe said: “In a couple of weeks, we will resume shipments to Mexico. Our farmers are eager and the fields are near ready. The harvest season of hibiscus will start any moment from now. And the good news is that Nigeria boasts of a vast growing belt, with harvest lasting up to five months.’’ He pointed out the hibiscus is a very promising cash crop, as in 2017, Nigeria exported 1,983 containers of it to Mexico alone, earning $35 million within a space of nine months. He added that Mexico and other countries use hibiscus as organic colouring agents and wines, saying dried hibiscus also serves as a delicacy while the roselles are consumed as vegetables. Ambassador Blanco commended the NAQS for the passion to improve on Nigerian trade with Mexico. He disclosed that with the ever-improving partnership between the NAQS and the Mexican embassy in Nigeria, his country plans to expand their import list to include cashew, sesame, soy bean, coffee and honey. http://www.agricinfo.com/2018/11/nigeria-to-begins-export-of-zobo-leaves.html?m=0

As a farmer, you must know that the yield you get could largely be influenced by attacks from diseases or pests. To effectively control this disaster from wiping out your investment, you must monitor the crop closely to detect early, these diseases or pests that will inflict heavy losses on you. ~ Here is a tip on How Start Maize Processing Business Information and Communication Support for Agricultural Growth in Nigeria (ICS-Nigeria)- a project which seeks to increase the quantity and quality of information available for increased agricultural production, processing, and marketing and also strengthen the capacity of farmer assistance organizations, in collaboration with IITA Ibadan, recommended the steps below to deal with these pests and disease in your maize farm: 1. Army-worms and grasshoppers: Where infestation by these insects has been detected, control immediately with monocrotophos (e.g. Azodrin at 533 ml/liter, Nuvacron 40EC at the rate of 40 ml per 10 litres of water and Ultracide 40 at 40 ml per 10 liters of water). 2. Termites: If termites attack is detected during the growing season, spray the affected area with 30 ml of Nogos 50 in 4.5 liters of water. Termite hills in the field and surrounding area should be located and destroyed. 3. Stem-borers: Where stem-borer control is required, apply Furadan, 3G or 10g (carbofuran) at the rate of 0.75 kg ai/ha as side dressing, 10 cm away from maize stands. This should be done seven days after emergence or as seed dressing-‘a chemical, typically antimicrobial or fungicidal, with which seeds are treated (or dressed)’ with a marker prior to planting. Apply 1.68 kg active ingredient carbaryl (Vetox 85) at 225 litres of water/ha. Local unit is 8 levels of standard match box per 9 litres (2 gallons) of water. Two applications every two weeks intervals, starting two weeks after planting should be made. Also Read: SUCESS GUIDE TO MAIZE FARMING 4. Corn earworms: For green maize production in particular and increased grain yield, apply 3 sprays of cymbush 10 EC of Ambush 25 EC at the rate of 20ml per 10 liters of water at weekly interval, beginning from 50% silking and spray directly to the cobs. Farmers are strongly advised to start planting early to minimize attack by diseases. Farmers should also contact extension workers for other effective means of control. http://www.agricinfo.com/2018/06/tips-on-how-to-control-maize-diseases.html?m=0
