Processes Involve in Milling Rice. 1. Sundrying 2. Threshing 3. Winnowing 4. Parboiling 5. Hulling 6. Polishing 1. Sun drying: This is done immediately after harvesting for three to four days. 2. Threshing: This is the seperation of the grains from the stalk by either beating with stick, treading with feet or by use of mechanical threshers. 3. Winnowing: After threshing, the chaff or unwanted dust and remains of stalks are removed. This is a fanning operation usually done by throwing the grains in the air to blow away the dust and other residues. After winnowing, the grains of rice remain enclosed by the husk to form what is called PADDY. 4. Parboiling: This process is used to reduce the breakage of grains during pounding. It also brings some vitamins to the outer layer of the grains and it also reduces the labour required to remove the husks. The paddy rice is heated by putting it into boiling water for about 12-15 hours. The rice swells and the husks are forced apart. The parboiled rice is now sun-dried. 5. Hulling: This is the removal of the husks from the grains. The grains. The grains are pounded gently to remove the expanded husks. The husks are then seperated from the rice by winnowing. 6. Polishing: In some cases, the paddy rice is threshed by machine and polished. Polishing involves the use of specially designed machines to remove husks and other layers covering the grains. The portion removed is known as RICE BRAN which is very rich in protein and vitamins. Consumption of polished rice may cause vitamin deficiency disease called BERI BERI due to the removal of the bran rich in protein. Finally It is ready for selling or cooking. Storage: Rice can be stored as paddy rice or in processed form in silos or jute bags http://www.agricinfo.com/2016/08/how-to-mill-rice-easily-at-home.html#more |

By James Emejo Abuja — Managing Director, Nigeria Incentive Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Mr. Aliyu Hameed has said that the firm has guaranteed loans totaling N61.16billion to agriculture and disbursed N753.35million as rebate to borrowers who paid back loans on time between 2013 and 2015.This was the period when the agency was still a project implementation office under incubation within the Development Finance Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).He added that NIRSAL had also guaranteed up to 207 agricultural value chain projects valued at N39.49billion under the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) programme of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development (FMARD) and paid $2.2million (N439.09million) as interest draw back to beneficiaries on 91 agriculture related projects.Hameed said NIRSAL had between 2013 and mid-2016 trained 157,000 farmers/primary producers in 6 value chains including rice, cocoa, cotton, tomatoes, sesame, and soybeans.Speaking during a presentation at theDesign Workshop on Establishing an African Agriculture Risk Sharing and Financing Mechanism which was organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Nairobi, Kenya, the NIRSAL boss argued that the growth of agriculture in Nigeria will lead not only to prosperity but also improve income equality in the country. He, maintained that the positive impact of agriculture on income inequality was one of the several reasons for the focus of the Buhari administration on the sector which is believed to have the potential to boost the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians.Hammed further described the progress made so far by NIRSAL as a product of the farsighted pro-people vision of the Buhari administration and the continued commitment of the CBN under Mr. Godwin Emefiele to achieving the vision. His comments also came as the AfDBidentified the NIRSAL financial model as of the current successes of African agriculture during its post event assessment of the workshop.Describing NIRSAL as a "Game Changer" in Nigeria's agricultural space, the MD added that it planned to further facilitate lending to 3.8 million agricultural producers out of the estimated 14 million agricultural producers in the country within the next 10 years by providing guarantees through intermediaries including Microfinance institutions and cooperatives. In a statement by NIRSAL's Coordinator Research & Strategy, Bello Abdullahi Abba! Hameed said part of the key objective of NIRSAL was to increase total value of agricultural lending- from the current 1.4 percent to 10 percent of total bank lending by 2026 and generating by $3 billion of additional agricultural lending in order to boost food production levels, stimulate inclusive growth, create jobs and increase the standard of living of farmers who constitute the greater majority of our population.Essentially, NIRSAL was set up in 2013 as an initiative of the CBN, the Bankers' Committee and the FMARD as a primary platform for managing agribusiness risk so banks can lend with confidence to the sector which had largely been neglected.NIRSAL use credit guarantees to address the risk of default and provide technical assistance and incentives to both financial institutions and borrowers to bridge understanding and increase capacity to payback. The Ekiti State House of Assembly has warned President Muhammadu Buhari from trying to exercise powers that the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has not bestowed on him by reason of his purported plan to place a ban of movement on two governors from the Southern part of the country. The Ekiti legislature, in a statement issued by the Chairman of its Committee on Information, Youth and Sports Development, Chief Olugboyega Aribisogan, on Wednesday, in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, noted that any attempt to assume a power not bequeathed by the constitution in a democracy was tantamount to invitation to anarchy. “The same section 308 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria that President Muhammadu Buhari swore to uphold gave the right of immunity to him, Dr Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. “Nobody, no matter how highly placed, can mess up with our governor, as long as we operate within the ambit of the laws of the land. It is an aberration for any mortal to so decree that a freeborn like him cannot move freely, having not been alleged of any wrongdoing. “We, as a House of Assembly and lawmakers, will not stand with arms akimbo watching the laws made for the good governance of our people being broken with disdain and reckless abandon. We stand with Ayo Fayose in everything he does. He has not committed any offence by being the leader of the opposition voice in the country. “That is why we have taken our case to the international community. We want President Buhari to wake up to the reality that he is president of a democratic Nigeria in the 21st century, and not a head of a military junta of the late 20th century Nigeria. “The world has taken note of the deliberate or circumstantial similarities of his current regime with the former. In today’s Nigeria, no ordinary citizen would need to report to a Buhari-appointed Director of State Security (DSS) before traveling to anywhere in the world. Thus, it is an insult; a rape on democracy, the rule of law and the constitution of the nation to wish that an elected governor bow before a political appointee before exercising his right to free movement. “The Ekiti State House of Assembly wishes, therefore, to advise President Buhari to face the nagging economic problems of the nation, think out of the box and solve them, instead of creating more problems for the nation by assuming powers that he lack under the constitution, simply for the purpose of political witch-hunting,” the statement read. Chief Aribisogan noted that much as the Ekiti State government was working round the clock to get out of the problems created by the immediate-past All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in the state and the Federal Government’s cluelessness over the nation’s economy, it would not shirk the responsibility of attacking evil politicking of “those in government, but behaving as if in opposition for lack of anything good to offer Nigerians.” Source:Leapfame |
The Managing Director, Capital Oil Plc and Founder/President FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has commiserated with the family of late former Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi, who passed on Wednesday morning. Ubah, who said, his heart brimmed with grief when he heard the heartbreaking news of Keshi's demise, however, described him as a man who lived an exemplary life, adding that Nigeria has lost a football icon. The oil magnate in a statement said: "My heart brimmed with grief when the heartbreaking news of the Big Boss' demise filtered through my ears. Words failed me and still fail me as I struggle to express the sadness I felt when I received the news Stephen Keshi's glorious exit. The cold hands of death just served us a distasteful meal! "Today, I mourn a man who lived a fulfilled and exemplary life; and as a key member of the football family, I mourn the departure of one of us, an icon in Nigerian football. I mourn a friend and a man that I always related with and looked up to with respect to issues on growth and development of football in Nigeria. "We have lost a man we needed so much in a time where all efforts are geared towards repositioning Nigeria football. The Big Boss has left us when his wealth of experience was needed the most in the football sector of this country. It will be hard to talk about Nigerian football without a mention of "Stephen Keshi", a man we had expected to remain here with us for a long time to come so that we could continue to tap from his wealth of experience. Nigeria will miss you! Anambra state football family will miss you! "In this time of bereft, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the Keshis. It must be a very agonizing period for his children and other members of his family who are still in excruciating pains over the demise of their mother and wife who passed onto higher glory just a few months ago. I sincerely sympathize with every one of you. My earnest prayer is that the memories of all the happy times shared with him, will in the fullness of time, ease the hurt and grief that you all feel as a result of the bereavement. I also pray that the good Lord in his infinite mercies, grants every one of you the peace and fortitude to bear the immeasurable loss. "To fellow Nigerians and fans of Keshi worldwide who feel must feel aggrieved at this irreparable loss, may the promise contained in the "8 Beatitudes of Christ" which bestows blessings of comfort on all those who mourn as stated in Mathew 5:4 be true to us all in Jesus name...Amen! "To my brother and friend, Stephen Keshi, may the good Lord grant your beautiful soul a peaceful repose in his bosom. Adieu, THE BIG BOSS! Rest in peace!" |

Javier Mascherano is expected to remain at the Nou Camp Neymar, who was linked with a move to Manchester United in the past two transfer windows, is also a player for whom Barcelona have no plans to sell. Recent developments in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should ordinarily have been taken as the normal, internal palpitations in a healthy political institution. But they were not. The PDP was the country’s ruling party for 16 years and is in possession of an expansive institutional memory to benefit our democracy. The PDP, as the country’s leading opposition party, has a formidable structure to help keep the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in check. But, as the APC marked its first anniversary in power, the absence of the opposition was very glaring. Instead of articulating its own informed scorecard of the APC Federal Government at this important milestone, the leaders of the PDP were enmeshed in a complex leadership tussle for the control of its future. The squabbles saw the leadership fragmented into at least four factions claiming authority at the national level. The factions included those led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who was sacked as the interim national chairman by officials at the recent convention of the party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The second group was led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who was appointed as the chairman of a caretaker committee at the convention. A third tendency was the collegiate leadership centered on the founding fathers of the party including Prof. Jerry Gana and Senator Ibrahim Mantu, among others. A fourth group coalesced around the Board of Trustees (BoT) which claimed to have intervened to stop the fragmentation. The seeming crisis in the PDP is of concern to watchers of our democracy in Nigeria because we need strong alternative political parties to strengthen our multi party system and keep the current party in power on its toes. The many mistakes that the PDP made as a governing party took place because of the absence of any virile opposition party. We, as a nation, should avoid the mistake of having one dominant ruling party, as this predisposes those in power to impunity and corruption as experience has shown. When this is the case, it is the ordinary people that suffer the misrule more. We urge both the ruling party and the other political parties to strengthen their internal processes and give their political outfits the character, distinct identity and vision that will give Nigerians real choice when next we go to the polls. Seventeen years after the military left the political scene, party politics should have grown beyond the mere tussle for power or posts. It should now be more about where each political party wishes to take Nigeria and how they want to achieve it. This can only happen if our politicians learn from their mistakes and build on areas where they have done well. |
By Yakubu Jimoh Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has condemned Monday's killing of over 30 Igbo protesters, who were mainly members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), saying it appeared that President Muhammadu Buhari was turning the people of the South East and South South to “politically endangered species.” He called on the international community to take note of the wanton killings being perpetrated by the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government. A statement on Wednesday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said there was no justification whatsoever for the killing of over 30 Igbo youths just because they were marking “Biafra Day in memory of the former leader of the defunct Biafra Republic, the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.” He said it was worrisome that Nigeria and its people had been more divided since the advent of Buhari’s government, adding that approach to civil unrests of any kind under the government was causing more security problems in the country. The governor, who reiterated his avowed belief in the unity of Nigeria, said it was unspeakable for security men to have used life ammunitions against the Igbo protesters and went on to justify the murder of innocent Nigerians just because their views were different from those of the President. “To even justify the killing by claiming that the Igbo youths protest was orchestrated in order to mar the first anniversary of Buhari’s government is to say the least, wicked and animalistic,” the governor said. He said it was worrisome that more than 150 Igbo youths had been killed by Nigerian security operatives under the directive Buhari’s government from August 30, 2015 till date, adding that “It appears that President Buhari has made up his mind to eliminate as many South East and South South people as possible and lovers of the corporate existence of Nigeria and its people should call the president to order.” “I am alarmed that Nigerians who were only on peaceful protest could be shot at and killed by security agents and after the senseless killing of innocent Nigerians, security agents could demonstrate their heartlessness by coming up with justifications for the criminal act. “One is however not surprised because every evil perpetrated by the Buhari-led government against Nigerians, especially those the presidents appears to hate have been justified by those who perpetrated them. “We were in this country when over 1,000 Shiite Muslims were killed and buried overnight in Zaria, Kaduna State and the murder was justified. We were also here when over 400 Agatus were killed in Benue State and the President said nothing. “The Monday killing of over 30 Igbo youths is therefore condemnable. Its justification is barbaric, heartless, crude and must be condemned by all lovers of unity of Nigeria and its people. “I therefore wish to express my sympathy to the people of the South Eastern part of Nigeria and I urge them to remain resolute in their agitation for a Nigeria in which all Nigerians are treated equally irrespective of their tribe and religion." Ramadan Facts 1 Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim, Islamic calendar, a religious annual observance and month of fasting that is considered to be one of the Five Pillars of Islam. 2 During the month of Ramadan, adult Muslims fast from dusk until dawn, unless they are ill, pregnant, or diabetic, breastfeeding, or traveling. This time spent fasting is meant to be used for prayer, charity, spirituality, and for purifying the mind and body. 3 The actual beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, or astronomical calculations. 4 Because of this, the actual date when Ramadan begins each year differs from year to year. 5 Interesting Ramadan Facts: It is believed that Muhammad received the first revelation during Ramadan. 6 The beginning of Ramadan can move as many as 11 or 12 days each year. In Egypt, the clocks are pushed back to shorten the days and increase the night, when fasting is not required. 7 During Ramadan, Muslim-majority countries often shorten work days to allow for additional prayer time each day. 8 In Muslim countries the economy is impacted because of the fasting. It usually results in a month of inflation; prices go up. 9 If a non-Muslim meets a Muslim during the month of Ramadan, the appropriate greeting for good wishes is "Ramadan Mubarak" which means "Have a blessed Ramadan." During Ramadan Muslims are obligated to give to charity through Sadaqa (voluntary giving), or Zakat (mandatory giving). Children are not obligated to fast during Ramadan, not until they have reached puberty, but some practice in order to prepare for adult participation. 10 The Five Pillars of Islam include Sawm: Fasting during Ramadan, Hajj: a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life, Zakat: giving to the poor, Salat: five-time daily prayer, facing Mecca, including absolution prior to prayer, Shalada: declaration of belief in one true God. The meal before the beginning of the fast is called suhoor, and the meal after sunset is called iftar. 11 The first prayer of the day is called Fajr. Despite the exemptions to fasting during Ramadan such as illness, breastfeeding, or medical conditions, many Muslims will persist with fasting because of their spiritual needs. If one is not able to fast, but is able to in the future once their condition changes, they must still complete the fast. 12 Muslims often break the daily fast with three dates and then a prayer called the Maghrib prayer. A meal follows which is often a buffet- style large meal. 13 During Ramadan Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran. 14 In some countries it is a crime to ignore Ramadan and break the fast. Although Ramadan has shown to have some health benefits to Muslims, it can also cause problems for patients with advanced kidney disease due to water restrictions. Fasting can last longer each day for Muslims in in polar regions where daylight can last for up to 22 hours. 15 At the end of Ramadan there is a large festival called Eid ul Fitr to celebrate the end of the fast. Eid ul Fitr is celebrated by wearing one's best clothes, giving gifts, having a large meal, and spending time with one's family. 16 Muslims also use this time to ask for forgiveness for sins and to praise Allah (God). |
Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The Nigerian Army said on Tuesday that dialogue with the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, whose operations in the oil rich region have cut down daily oil production output, was not yet an option. The Army, justifying its recent operations in Gbaramatu, Delta State, said the use of force was for now the only available option until leaders of the militant group were apprehended. Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, Brig.-Gen. J. Hamakim, said this at the ‘State of the Nation Conference’, organised by the Nigerian Bar Association and held in Abuja on Tuesday. During the conference on Tuesday, the Army was accused of failing to explore dialogue with the Niger Delta militants and resorting to use of force which could lead to a war situation in the region. The Army was also accused of attacking members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, who were allegedly demonstrating peacefully in Onitsha, Anambra State on Monday. But Hamakim, in his response, said there was no sign that the Niger Delta Avengers’ members were ready for dialogue. He said, “I quite agree that dialogue is very important. But where it is not too obvious that the adversary is ready to come out and talk, you can also force such a person. “I think that is what the Nigeria Army is trying to do. Yes, we don’t know the group’s leader, for now; that is the only option, possibly we have to bring the people out to know who you can dialogue with.” He said the activities of the group were affecting Nigerians as the nation’s oil production had recently further plummeted to 1.1 million barrels per day. He debunked the allegation that soldiers, who were involved in the operations in Gbaramatu, were killing innocent residents and raped women. “We have done our investigation and nothing like that is happening,” he said. He also said the demonstrations by IPOB, leading to a clash between the protesters and security forces which left two policemen and 30 others dead in Onitsha, Anambra State on Monday, were not peaceful. Hamakim said, “Remember that lives were lost, policemen were killed, some were thrown overboard and the military has rules of engagement. “The question is how peaceful is the peaceful demonstration. How peaceful was the demonstration at that time? If it was that peaceful, how come we lost security agencies. “The rule of engagement is that if you feel threatened, you have the mandate to respond. What we can say is that was not at all a demonstration that you can say was peaceful.” Various heads of anti-corruption and security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase; Controller-General of Prisons, Ahmed Ja’afaru; and Director-General of the Department of State Service, Lawal Daura; were represented by officers of their agencies at the event. NBA President, Mr. Augustine Alegeh; the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Nasiru Ajanah; Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Anti- Corruption, Mr. Babajide Akinloye, two contenders for the office of the NBA presidency, Messrs Abubakar Mahmud and Joe Kyari- Gadzama, among many other Senior Advocates of Nigeria were at the event. A member of the House of Representative, Linda Ikpeazu, represented the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, as the Chairman of the event. |
By Kamarudeen Ogundele, Ado Ekiti The Special Assistant on Parliamentary Matters to Governor Ayodele Fayose, Mr. Samuel Ajibola, has resigned his appointment. Ajibola, in his letter of resignation, said he quit Fayose’s administration “on basic developmental issues and the economic situation in the state which he can no longer pretend over.” In his May 28 letter, Ajibola said, “I humbly write this to formally notify you that I am resigning from my position as your S.A on Parliamentary Affairs. “Sir, within my personal conviction, I am satisfied that I have in honesty and utmost loyalty served the PDP, the people of Ekiti and government in general. “Therefore, I premise my resignation on some basic developmental issues and the economic situation in the state which I cannot continue to pretend over. My resignation takes off immediately.” Ajibola was the only Peoples Democratic Party member of the House of Assembly before Fayose came to power on October 16, 2014. He was later joined by six All Progressives Congress lawmakers who defected on the day Fayose was sworn in. Fayose, has, however, approved the appointment of Mr. Alexander Adeojo to replace Ajibola. The governor thanked Ajibola for his meaningful contributions to the administration and development of the state while he was Special Assistant, Parliamentary Matters to the Governor. Source-Punch |

By Rotimi Ojomoyela Concerned Trade Unions in Ekiti State, comprising artisans and commercial drivers , Tuesday held an anti-workers rally in Ado-Ekiti, describing the ongoing strike declared by labour unions to press home for the payment of myriad of outstanding benefits as politically motivated. They also accused the leadership of labour of taking N25 million bribe to destabilize the Ayo Fayose-led government . The protesters led by the Chairmen of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, Com. Samuel Agbede and National Union of Road Transport Workers, Com Clement Adekola, paraded placards of various inscriptions, massed at the popular Fajuyi Park and marched to Ijigbo to shore up supports for Fayose’s government. While speaking with newsmen, the RTEAN Chairman said the workers industrial came at the wrong time, saying he expected the labour leaders to take a cue from Ondo , Oyo , Benue and Osun States, who are owing more than five months salaries without the workers going on strike. In his words, “the workers cannot afford to paralyse the state because Governor Fayose has demonstrated transparency in the distribution of federal allocations accruing to Ekiti. The labour leaders were part of the negotiation that agreed that two month allocations should be lumped up to pay one month salary. “But as we speak now, two months allocations can’t even pay one month salary. The governor used March and April allocations to pay for December and where do they expect him to get money to pay full salary of about N2.6 billion monthly now? “We expect them to show understanding . But we are beginning to see that this strike has political undertone”, he alleged. He berated the labour unions for asking Fayose to spend the internally generated revenue to pay workers’ salary together with federal allocations, urging them to desist from arrogating the state to workers alone.
